To be fair for 80s horror movies, we didn't have smartphones, wifi or cellular data yet. And the only way a phone could be available is if it was connected to a telephone pole or wire. The monster could simply cut the wire and bam, the characters can't call for help.
Well, then there wouldn't be any movies. The only good example of an actually smart protagonist was, "You're Next," iirc. But that movie has multiple assailants instead of just one or two like in your run-of-the-mill flick.
I feel like the skits are getting better and better. I loved the Hallie skit and it made an amazing point. If you don't believe that anything will happen, why waste your time?

All the talk about haunted murder houses reminded me of one house in my childhood town. There is a house where, decades ago, the father of the family murdered his twin daughters, and after that the house has burned down twice for two different reasons. Fun times.
The horror trope I find most annoying is the whole "girl slumber party-- there is something outside" one. The girls are in skimpy attire and someone sees or hears something outside late at night. So naturally ONE girl decides to go out and investigate. She doesn't get dressed or arm herself--heavens no! She goes out in just a cropped T-shirt and panties with a flashlight saying, "Is anyone out here?" If she is not instantly killed she sees the killer/monster and instead of running back to the house she runs into the woods and ends up being chased and murdered. The girls left behind begin to wonder what happened to her so they too decide to venture out and SEPARATE to find her. None of these things are what normal people would do.

You know I was about to agree with you but then I remembered that when I was in university our history professor decided to spend several weeks teaching us all about the mystic elements of ancient cultures a lot of which involved learning in detail about ancient curses. So nearly every week we would have a class over 40+ people eagerly reciting ancient curses and our notebooks are full of them. And the once who went to summer study with the professor went one step further and actually did historical recreation of magical rituals including outright sacrificing chickens So as someone who would absolutely go NOPE the minute they see a haunted house or someone suggesting a cursed game but still eagerly recited ancient curses in class and still has a notebooks full of curses in the attic......well sometimes you are not even aware of what dumb you are doing
