fetishization is so gross, people will treat dating other races like they’re a sexuality. They always say stuff like “Oh wow, I’ve never dated a WOC before, it would be so cool to try out” it’s like we’re an exotic food that’s rare to find. And they’re usually a white man who will say stuff like “my family is racist, but not me!” Or “my family is racist, but they’ll like you!” Like that makes it ok😐 And they only think of WOC as what their stereotype is. Like Emily said; Asian women are seen as small, obedient, basically child-like. And Latina women are seen as “exotic” and “spicy”.
Because Asian women are, mostly speaking of Japanese, Chinese, these regions, are very small xD Have you checked the average height for idk... Chinese woman? It's so low, in comparison to some other places. Brazilian girls are beautiful, so shut the square frick up. 😎🤙

Nobody said that you can't be attracted to SOMEONE... but if your behavior kind of repeatedly follows certain patterns, well, than you might consider to think again!
@@exuvittorio4855 What exactly is your point? There is nothing to discuss! It's on you if you want reflect your behavior or keep going believing whatever pleases you... I really don't care! 🤷♂
@@qjv1922 There are people who actually think being attracted to another race means you're fetishising them. Just look at how "journalists" responded to women crushing on Rishi Sunak. They crushed on him because he was a reasonably attractive man who was taking charge of the emergency, not because of his race. Though nothing wrong with finding South Asian men attractive, it's how you can on those attractions. The way people responded to a simple crush shows me that people generally aren't willing to have nuanced discussions about issues like this.
It's just so impressive how Emily manages to switch between exaggerating and talking in a mature manner. It really gets the point across. She even does it for really touchy subjects like this one even though she's unfortunately had first hand experience. On a lighter note, can we take a moment to appreciate her acting??? Her delivery was so good that I couldn't even tell that she just used Google Translate for some of the lines! You did amazing, Emily!
The worst part is people see no problem in what their doing. What happened in Atlanta was abhorrent, but the part that really sickened me was the police describing it as a "bad day" for the murderer. Shit made me ashamed to be from Atlanta. With the rise in popularity of Korean media, people are being more blatant in their fetishization. I was in line to see Eric Nam last year, and the girls near me in line were going on and on about how they wanted to move to Korea, how Korean babies are sooo much cuter, how they wanted a Korean husband. I was so disgusted. That's not cool, man.
@@AmberyTear I wholeheartedly disagree. I mean, you know the difference between thinking something is cuter and blatant fetishism, mate. Saying "I want to move to Korea and have a Korean husband, Korean babies are so much cuter" is beyond just weird shit your brain does. In this context, it's gross. To dismiss that or reduce it to a casual opinion is kinda weird.
Cried yesterday (yes I’m sensitive) bc I found a forum of asian fetishists, and they even talked about Asian teens, SHOWED PERSONAL PICTURES OF THEIR ASIAN GFS, and degrading certain asian countries and I got so sick to my stomach thinking that this is how some people see my race as Wish I could cleanse my mind afterwards wtf
The worst part is that unfortunately, these fetishes end up being pushed on young women/men. Growing up, i saw Black girls, Asian girls and Latina’s being sexualized at such a young age and in towns where education is limited, these girls end up playing into the stereotypes because in their mind, that’s the only way to get male attention. As you get older, it’s such a complicated thing to process because before, I used to be bullied for my traits and accent, now these are the very traits that entice old white men to approach me because I look young and nothing like their poor white wife who is probably making his favorite for dinner. I was hit on at work once by someone who thought I was Asian and when I told him I was actually Mexican he stepped back and changed his mind because “Latinas are crazy” and he’s only into Asians. It’s obviously okay to be attracted to a different race and admire the culture but when the deciding factor is that they are from certain race, you’re fetishizing.
Well said. I have attractions that lean in certain geographical locations, but there's a difference between an attraction and being a total creep that buys into all the stereotypes. I appreciate good looks regardless of race, but personality should come before appearance.
I live in the south and here people definitely believe in stereotypes. I'm white but it is exhausting to see people stereotype POC, I can't imagine actually being a POC and having to deal with it. I am so sorry you grew up with that and still have to deal with it to this day
I remember showing my friend a picture of my Filipina mom from when she was in college and he had the audacity to reply with "she looks so oriental". I was flabbergasted...
As an asian dude. Thank you for addressing male asians as well. Its annoying to be compared to male kpop artists. Ive met a few women who are openly looking for korean dudes to date. Its an impossible standard to meet. Guess im not that kind of asian. I will not copy the male kpop aesthetic.
I really wish she'd talked about SOUTH Asian men specifically though. We've had zero progression or improvement socially, in media and it's only gotten worse online (I blame Pewdiepie mainly for that one). We're completely demonized and get zero help

@@zzzz44400 You're right, sorry I didn't mean to insert my community's issues in a video that didn't really involve us, my mistake. Just for clarification though, I just was hoping that she (and anyone talking about Asians in general) would try to mention South Asians a little more, and not just as a footnote. I was not trying to disallow a conversation about East Asian fetishization in the comment section of a video about that. My intentions aside though, I messed up. Me wanting more conversation about South Asian issues is a general thing. You're right, this video is for East Asians and I'm sorry, I didn't mean to derail the primary conversation
as a significantly young korean american girl, i appreciate that you made a video about this!! it’s been extremely alarming seeing people (predominantly young men/boys) start to view me/people like me as a form of sexual object or more so than my friends of other ethnicities throughout puberty. thanks for bringing light to this!!
I really hope this problem ends, and tbh half of my asian friends sexualise asian women (Southeast Asian/ East Asian) and even HARRASSED a young woman for that it grosses me out as an asian myself knowing these people view Asians like that as if they are their little animals waifus.
i remember i mentioned i was korean once, and this dude started comparing korean girls to s4x dolls and talking about how innocent and perfect they were compared to white girls. the fetishization is rampant and i wish it could be talked about more openly without people invalidating our experiences, because this is a huge problem
This can also go along with the sexualization of maids and maid outfits in general. For example, in (I believe) Japan there’s these maid cafés and they aren’t meant for sexualized perceptions. They’re seriously hosted for entertainment purposes only, and yet people who go there would disturb and harass the women for thinking they’re some "uwu kawaii submissive anime catgirl" when really they’re just doing their job and stuff. And plus, as this comment is relating to the video’s topic too, they’re obviously sexualized because they’re asian and because they’re dressed in "skimpy" outfits. Here’s the thing though, maids in general have always been completely harmless. And for some reason people decide to ruin them and turn them into as though they’re just toys. Like god, maids are more focused on making a living out of cleaning or serving, not getting in a relationship. And for Asians and Asian women, they’re just trying to live life, not be fetishized. It’s so disgusting how people handle things.
It reminds me when I'm looking at porn and see Latinas being in cliché roles like maids. When I watch ethnic porn I tend to go for videos where they're both of similar background as each other so there's no dumb crap like "I wanna bang you like a burrito" or "I can't wait to see your kimchi".
i agree that the women who work at those cafes shouldn't be harrassed in any way, but maid cafes are meant to appeal to people who are into those kind of tropes, it's why they have the maids act a certain way and dress up all cutesy and frilly. these cafes (afaik) don't have sexual undertones bc they want to preserve a more innocent image, but they definitely capitalize on anime escapist fantasies and fetishes, and the women who work there do so bc they enjoy that aspect of otaku culture themselves. ofc, you definitely shouldn't take that fantasy outside those cafes or disturb the workers in any way.
It's okay to have your "types", but it doesn't mean that you can just render a human being of your "types" who has a life of their own into nothing more than an object for your lust. That said, the amount of dedication you put into those CJK lines is astonishing.
I love how even though it is a serious topic she still made it like her other funny videos. In all seriousness though I hate that all this happens and that so many people don’t get how bad and how deep fetishizing goes. It’s just awful

Who the hell says "I've never been with an Asian woman before. I'd like to try though!" Is it that hard to try and talk to them like they are a person and not a representative of the entire race or culture?
When I was younger I always wanted an “Asian friend” because I thought Asian people were really cool and cute. I’ve grown up now and I try not to just resort to stereotypes about people because as a black girl, I know how horrible it is for someone to presume something about someone just because of who they are.

As an anime fan this is so strange to me. Like seeing anime characters and be like "Wow, I need an asian GF Right now!". Bro, it would be like reading the Odyssey, loving the protag Odysseus, and immediately be like *I need to find a Greek man, RIGHT NOW. I want him to pull up at our date with the severed head of a fallen beast that he slayed an hour ago, his 12 packs shining from the Sun of Helios* *you know... like every greek man* Anime characters have generally NOTHING to do with real japanese people. Most anime characters look like strange aliens and behave in even stranger ways. Tsundere don't exist. Not anywhere on Planet Earth.
This is so messed up. My brother has an Asian fetish and after many tries did find his meek, submissive Asian wife who makes him dinner and does everything for him. She's so sweet and it's so messed up.
As an asian woman, lol I’ve been with guys like this. If all his ex gfs are asians and dude wouldn’t date any other race. Girls f run as far as you can.
My mom is a black woman who went to a predominately white college and had a lot of issues with men seeing her as a trophy and something that would make her parents angry just because she was “exotic”. One of the men who tried to get with her even said to her OPENLY that his parents would be sooo angry if he brought a black girl home and that she was just so different from other women. One of the larger issues with this fetishization is that most people still see the other race as less than and after their done with them treat them like trash. It’s truly disgusting how some people see and interact with people of all races.
When I was little I was often made fun of for being Asian, so I later on took it as compliments when people liked me for "looking Asian" or "like a kpop idol". But as I grew up I understood what that actually meant and now I'm still conflicted about it... I mean, those people don't mean any harm to me, yet it sometimes cringes me out and I feel bad.🙃
I get that honestly, being one of the maybe three Asian kids in my elementary school, it just made people notice me more because of the way I looked. It was this "cute little Chinese girl" compliment (but was really a stereotype-y kind of thing) and that stereotype is something that I still struggle to see myself as more than now, even though its been many years.

It was truly traumatizing and now it just seems like people have forgotten about that event or never cared to join conversations around asian fetish.
i feel ike asian fetishization has gotten much worse recently because i guess kpop, japanese culture, and so on has gotten more popular recently. i involve myself in a lot of japanese culture online and i always see the creeps going "yea cant wait to go to japan and pick me up a quiet japanese wife/etc" its so disgusting. for me, im middle eastern but i look mixed because my parents had different skin tones and this guy once said "i really like your skin tone" and proceeded to s*xt me. after i denied him he completely ignored me, even when i was right next to him. i thought we were at least fking friends lmao!!! people are so gross. its okay to have a "type" but like having that be the main point youre attracted to them??? its problematic...

Ugh anyway sorry it's late where I am and I'm not the most coherent, but stuff like this just miffs me off I'm as I said an anime fan (since I was a teenager and I'm now in my mid-30s), and I really do not like or approve of the way that real Asian people (as in as a semi-separate discussion from anime characters where my feelings/opinions about it are more complicated) are often fetishised in anime fandom. I also enjoy some J-pop and K-pop but again don't like the way that people often think of and talk about the performers it is degrading and reductive :(
I agree, I think especially with asian entertainment rising(kpop, squid games, etc) rising its creating this weird idea around asians. Especially in the dating scene, I swear the first thing people ask is like "do you watch anime" or talk about boba.
Have you heard about personal preference? Some men are atracted to a certain race more than another. I love asians and Latinas if that makes me a bad person you have to generalize an entire population. Is like you guys want to be only exclusive to your race or whites and that makes all of you racist.
That's a good question. A lot of the comments seem to be about how they felt about the interaction, rather than what the other person did. It doesn't really paint a proper picture of at what point it becomes an actual problem.
The thing to be focused on is where the ignorance and objectification stems from and i think its common sense to distinguish between preference and fetish.
For me it has to do with the detachment from reality. If someone’s preference is solely based on media portrayals or some generalization that’s so out of touch from reality then that’s where I think that’s where the distinction occurs. Another thing is putting a certain “preference” on some pedestal and outright put down people that don’t match their preference is when it gets out of hand. It’s okay to have preferences but it should be more than just where they came from but them as an individual. Cultural norms do exist in different demographics, but what needs to be understood is no matter where anyone comes from, everyone is different and a unique individual in their own ways
I never knew how harmful fetishization is until I realised I was gay and started meeting guys and how there is a fetishism around ginger men (I am a ginger man) they are seen as submissive and smooth and like twinks, so kind of being a teen joining this kind of unwanted attention was horrifying to say the least.
Your skits are hilarious! You've improved so much, although your skits have always been extremely good Thanks for another great video! This topic is very important to discuss and I also had a good laugh
i'm an asian guy and have been fetishized before. mainly because they think of k-pop or that i look 'exotic' (their words, not mine). sometimes in person, sometimes through online dating. yes, it happens to women more often but from personal experience, i say it happens to asian across the board. it's really uncomfortable. multiple times i've heard, "i've never been attracted to an asian man before". a nice ego boost for me but when i take a step back, it's concerning to hear. that says more about prevailing racial stereotypes. i'm happy this is slowly changing with new media, portraying asians aren't just nice, docile and easily manipulated anymore. but apparent from what emily is saying, we still have a ton of work to do. while i've dated different races and don't have a hard preference, i have noticed i have a leaning towards asian people (my wife is vietnamese/chinese and i am korean/white) but that's because i can connect on a cultural level. we just...get it.
Great video Emily! One point that I feel was left out of this video however, is that of Orientalism as a concept. I think the fetishization of particularly asian women is grounded in the concept of Asia as this exotic (this you mentioned!) place, where the 'naturalist' Asians live compared to the 'civilized' and 'modern' Western world. This has of course historically led to Western white men to not view Asian people as individuals worthy of equal respect to that of a Western woman and thus the open fetishization has been condoned throughout the years, along with a bunch more problematic thinking surrounding the region and the people living there. I also believe that one of the best ways to combat this is for people to do what you have done here and openly state that this is in fact problematic and discriminatory and racist and for this I thank you! Maybe this post doesn't add any new insights or anything, but this video had a real affective response within me and so I just wanted to type something. Sincerely, Your average white man mastering in Asian Studies.
It's one thing to be naturally drawn towards certain qualities without any conscious thought about it. It's another to feed into it and be a creep to the point it's a fetish. Anyway. Yikes to those suckers out there who think this is a good thing to do. Lol
If everyone just treated everyone like an individual there wouldn’t be an issue. There is nothing wrong with being attracted to Asian people, but as soon as you view them as an extension of your sexuality rather than just other people, you are weird. It seems like this issue sprouts back up every time a new piece of media from the east gains notoriety in the west, with the most recent example being Squid Game. Hopefully, society will have gone through enough of these cycles to realize that Asians are people, not some exotic creatures that want to serve you. Great video Emily!
Fetishes towards race/ethnicities are MAD weird. It really cause all that media people consume, they honestly never touched grass, so they're destined to think oh man every asian girl is this submissive waifu perfect chick i dont know anymore lmao but damn people need to chill with anime dear lord...

Interesting to hear this. I lived in China for two years for my company. I met many Chinese men and women through my work, and a few who made friends outside of work. Some of my friends were very attractive, but I never fetishized them. In fact, I thought of them in exactly the same way I thought of my Caucasian American friends. Some close friends, others not as close. I credit my friends for enriching my experience in China by taking me to see Chinese culture, sightseeing, and to experience all kinds of Chinese food.
Wow, that was an incredible message Emily! I really liked how you incorporated comedy in the skits but also shed light to the importance of the message about fetishization towards asian women. It’s been so frustrating because it’s been occurring dating back to centuries ago. But it’s been mostly prevalent today due to the anti-asian hate ever since the pandemic began. There are people who actually think being attracted to another race means you're fetishising them.
Then there are the parts (while wearing a white blouse) in which she repeats her words, like Kamala Harris.

God I'm so sorry, your culture is super cool and people disrespecting it like that is so heartbreaking :(
The worst part is that unfortunately, these fetishes end up being pushed on young women/men.
Their was this study that said people see black girls as less
innocent from the age of 5.
Well said. I have attractions that lean in certain geographical locations, but there's a difference between an attraction and being a total creep that buys into all the stereotypes. I appreciate good looks regardless of race, but personality should come before appearance.
And sadly nowadays media will normalise the sexualization of minors. Just look at TikTok and family channels.
I live in the south and here people definitely believe in stereotypes. I'm white but it is exhausting to see people stereotype POC, I can't imagine actually being a POC and having to deal with it. I am so sorry you grew up with that and still have to deal with it to this day

Good points, I agree
@@TheHalfGlassFullGuy Many outlooks are entirely subjective.

Thanks for another great video!
Sincerely,
Your average white man mastering in Asian Studies.
Yes, Emily has blessed us with another wonderful video🤍
It's one thing to be naturally drawn towards certain qualities without any conscious thought about it. It's another to feed into it and be a creep to the point it's a fetish. Anyway. Yikes to those suckers out there who think this is a good thing to do. Lol
Such an important topic 10/10 🙌🏻 and props to you for speaking three different language parts!
It really cause all that media people consume, they honestly never touched grass, so they're destined to think oh man every asian girl is this submissive waifu perfect chick i dont know anymore lmao but damn people need to chill with anime dear lord...
when i was in third grade the day after a come back to school night a friend of mine told me her dad had a crush on my mom because he likes asian women :D
not me getting a "you're so exotic" comment from this one dude in my discord dms last night 💀
run
@@wetsocks7619 i blocked him lmao 🚩🚩🚩 miss me with that fetish shit 🤪
this has gotta be one of your greatest skit. well done. As a very hot asian, I can sympathize, with how people can sexualize other asians. I completely understand both sides.
my father calls my mother "exotic" simply because she's gotten darker skin.
they're divorced
Im definetly a kpop stan but I'm not going around looking for an asian girlfriend or boyfriend. People with any sort of racial fetishes are so creepy.
your chinese accent is so pretty wtf, 太美了。
The fact that you actually took the time to learn those languages just for a short Vlog… you’re an absolute legend 💕👊🏾
1:17 not related to the video but THAT SPIDER WAS *HUGE* .
I hope we can all understand this on a much deeper level and educate the ignorant people. As a half-Chinese, it’s absolutely triggering, agonizing and gut-wrenching to see all of this happen but from a witness’s point of view. It’s so sad….
As a gay dude I never understood the fetishization Of people and other cultures It's weird and gross wait you're basically saying you're more interested in where they come from than who they are and their personalities and I dont get that at all I'll never understand _it's gross_
And they say it as if it's an achievement or something- Objectifying a human being- Like, wah- no! Get some actual life achievements istg. It really is gross
@@infiniteblazingdiamond saying and having another notch on the belt is so uncomfortable and gross people should be cherished not objectified

Dude I feel this so hard. I'm not asian but I am trans and bi and seeing ppl like me treated like objects just hurts.
As a white passing half Asian female I am honestly glad, that I don't really get fetishized for my appearance.
lol

Random, but can you do a breakdown of running away culture as portrayed on television and media(shows, movies, etc.)?
