“You can do it for the fans, not in real life” that literally touches on a whole OTHER issue in kpop where ppl romanticize/sexualize the idea of gay idols but as soon as an idol is actually queer then they’re ostracized 😭
I wished more people would talk about this cuz it could go on for a really long time. Sometimes being an LGBTQ+ fan, but especially a gay man who's also into boy groups and I'm sure it's the same if you're a lesbian who loves girl groups, can be quite upsetting. I don't like how fans fetishize mlm relationships and at the same time defend their idols from homosexuality. According to so many fans, ALL idols MUST be straight and it's so delusional to think that way (I know about SK's conservative society but that doesn't mean that suddenly there aren't any Korean LGBTQ+ people). Of course not everyone is LGBTQ+ and it's not of our business to find out, but the homophobic opinions gotta stop immediately.
@@adrianrm07 yeah there’s a big problem with the assumption of idol’s sexualities. Not only from straight fans that fetishize the idea of queer idols but also queer kpop fans seem to further encourage fan service and what not. As someone who is queer myself I understand that ppl want representation and it’d be really nice to relate to your faves in that way but they rlly shouldn’t assume their sexualities like that😭 Onces call Sana gay, Stays call Felix Bisexual and honestly claim the whole group as gay, some Army’s say Yoongi is Pan. But it’s not just wrong to assume that they are gay but it is also not their place to assume that they’re straight. I see some fans reply to comments that say that “___ idol is gay” and they’re like “They’re not gay they’re straight” but we really don’t know that and their sexuality is none of our business. Their sexual orientation has nothing to do with their music/talents or who they are as people so I don’t see why people always make such a fuss over it.
@@bl00p_s00p Exactly!! I don't even say those things cuz I know they might be harmful and it's really none of my business. People assume things just on stereotypes 🙄 I think that if the boyfriend/girlfriend dynamics weren't so encouraged, fans wouldn't be so obsessive about things that shouldn't concern to them.
@@adrianrm07 i totally agree with you! The boyfriend/girlfriend dynamics make the fans mold the idols sexuality into what fits their fantasy or desires the most. It definitely crosses lines when it comes to their private sexual orientation
@@birdyyy4836 South Korean society, for the most part, sadly. I've been doing some research and, if you're LGBTQ+ and an idol, you stay on a glass closet and in a situation of "don't ask, don't tell" for some companies. They are kinda "protected" by their society's way of thinking that all idols have dated the opposite sex cuz they're branded as idols (this "perfect" image of a person who people look up to and in that perfection there's no same-sex relationships). I'm hoping things will change in the future and at least I'm glad they have their Seoul Queer Culture Festival with so many people celebrating their authenticity unapologetically ❤️🥰
the “diets” that they go through are basically starvation and i swear 90% of idols have undiagnosed eating disorders or disordered eating and its ENCOURAGED by not only their entertainments but their fans too.
LITERALLY and then some of the fans act so naive and oblivious: “they’re naturally skinny!” “they did it in a healthy way” even if the idol wasn’t that weight predebut and the lost the weight in a short amount of time. Fans never admit that an idol could possibly be unhealthy until they are wonyoung levels of skinny
I got so mad when Sunmi on an interview said that she was on a diet because her fans told her to lose weight... Like what??? Aren't your fans supposed to root for your health to have energy on stage?? Those "fans" are so toxic istg
If male idols just look at female idols just for a milli second there will be videos on it "there eye contact, they are probably dating" I wouldn't be surprised if there was a video titled "They breath the same air they are probably dating or They live on earth they are probably dating" Some fans without knowing anything just start hating on the idols Like they committed a big crime or something I have seen these things so much on the internet. *"Always remember this, if you ever dumb or stupid just look at the internet. You'll realize how smart you are"* ~ Me
If a male idol looks at a female idol, fans will victimize them trying to “protect them” and their “innocent mind” because apparently they’re five years old. Whereas female idols will almost always receive the short end of the stick from netizens and face the hatred and scrutiny of the public, whether or not they are the one “looking” or being looked at. (usually the latter) which is extremely unfair, because it honestly resembles the same scenario when being called “lucky” if a girl gets unwillingly hit on by a conventionally popular guy wherein they are pressured to feel grateful by the amount of people expressing their jealousy, and it’s a truth we have to acknowledge if we want to get anywhere
If a girl idol looks at a guy , she's called a pick me and if a guy idol looks at a girl , people say they're dating or the same thing to the girl idol It's the crazy fans that makes this fked up
it's so sad, too, cause these days, it seems like the debut ages are getting lower and, subsequently, the trainees are also getting younger. so these kids get so exposed to the toxicity of the industry at such a young age and it's so damaging. we already have adults struggling in the industry but then they add kids.
They have always been young but I suppose it’s because as we get older and those who are younger than us debut we seem to notice the problems within the industry.
@@midnightlime5174 yeah we definitely notice it a lot more as we grow older but i also think there's just generally a lot more in groups? idk but when finding out about a group, i would be surprised to find that there is not only one but two kids in the group who are under 16. and be even more surprised that the older ones would be barely over 16 or 18.
I am in that age range but I agree!!! Seeing idols commit suicide and gain eating disorders is so messed up. Part of the reason I don’t really listen to that much kpop anymore. I also hate the “scandals” bc half of the time there not important while idols are actually being racist no one bats an eye.
The fat-shaming in the community is just... fucked up to say the least. If the idol's ribs aren't visible or if they don't have a 5m thigh-gap 'fans' will bully them into losing weight. And if an idol is skinny enough, it doesn't matter whether they have any talent at all. This really just fosters an unhealthy relationship to food and physical appearance in the idols as well as the fans. It's obvious that eating disorders are pretty common in the industry.
Cant ever forget about how scandals ruin idol lives every year. Most recent ones being Kim Garam and Soojin being unfairly accused of bullying, when the supposed "victims" are the perpetrators themselves (And have been proven so way after the aforementioned idols were shamed and stripped of their titles).
@@melowlw8638 Mhm she's been kicked out indefinitely. Even after HYBE attested for her case, people just slandered Garam even further by saying her "rich parents" will keep her in even though her parents are just middle class workers.
@@phoenixmorphix Knowing KPoppies, they probably thought Garam forged and photoshopped those documents. These are the same people who think the picture of Garam slandering IVE during school is legit. They actually thought Garam slandering a girl group before they were even conceived is legit (IVE's debut was in December of 2021, so its logically impossible that anyone could even know of their existence prior). That just shows how senseless people are when it comes to witch hunting idols. Logic literally doesn't apply to them. Doesnt help that people made videos of Garam "bullying" her group members even though she's just looking at them. Its the same thing people do with Jennie when she looks at others with her resting bitch face. It doesnt mean they're bullies. It's literally how they look.
My biggest concern with kpop rn it's all these minors debuting. One close to 18 idol in a group of adults is fine but 14 yr olds? That's so scummy. It's so hard to look at groups like NewJeans without feeling like you're looking at a crime. I have to click out of videos cause they make me kinda uncomfortable.
I keep saying this, like at this point I'm just waiting for a twelve or thirteen year old to debute the rate they're going at. Then when you do speak out about it, some people would completely miss the entire point and say you're a hater who doesn't want to see a young person be successful. 😑
@@brennathecatlover4360 but the industry is so toxic especially for girls who are literally in ninth grade - companies should be protecting the minors under them and not exposing them so early. 16 or 17 i get but 14?? its crazyyyy, especially since almost everyone knows what goes down in kpop, people know that its wayyy more dangerous for young girls
Asian culture is very against seeking help for mental health and even physical health so. Especially Chinese people and there’s a lot of Chinese K-pop idols
my biggest problem with Kpop is how underrated K.A.R.D. is 😭 fun concept, co-ed group, songs are bangers, all 4 of them are talented through the roof and their visuals are impecable however, everything emily said is straight facts 🖨
I do agree that kpop is very glamourized, and now that it's more known internationally so many young girls I hear want to be just like their faves performing on stage. The dark side of the industry is very overlooked - dating ban, extreme dieting, cancel culture and beauty standards. I did enjoy this video and also want to praise the acting skills!
I got sucked into Kpop back when SNSD debuted in 2007 and the industry has always both fascinated and terrified me. I was shocked when I saw how some fans treated idols and how idols were treated by their companies. It felt suffocating as fuck watching it so I can only imagine how it feels living under such immense pressure all day, every day.
not to mention all the grown adult that think they're so cheeky for saying "OMG I'm going to jail. I've watched this edit of Ni-Ki from ENHYPEN 100 times. How is he seriously 17?"
This reminded me loooking at nct dream old video where most of them are still underage and i cant scroll down the comments without meeting a creepy person comment like "wow im a 405 years old woman and i feel guilty looking at them, anyone else 😍😍😍😍😍" NOT ME MF.
As a black kpop stan, it’s so hard liking kpop groups/idols when 99.9% of them appropriate culture/ make fun of us/ say a slur and never apologize, apologize very late, or give a terrible apology
@@eradict that is literally their language. You want Koreans to not speak Korean because it sounds like a bad English word that hip hop artists commonly use?
The thing with Momo is WORSE because if I remember correctly she had to loose weight to appear on Sixteen, the survival reality show to debut, like she didn't had a guarantee that she would debut it was just to compete
It’s sad to say this but it’s really hard being a black kpop stan. I’m sick and tired of black culture being disrespected and just used as like it’s a costume. I hate how every time I’m getting into a group I have to check if they’ve done culture appropriation, said the N word, do black face, say anything colorist, or are racist. Us black kpop stans feel like our voices aren’t being heard or that we’re being too overreactive. Thank you so much for this video Emily. ❤
ikr!! as a native american person i can say i don’t see as many people do cultural appropriation to us but it isn’t non existent which really upsets me
yeahh I can't stop thinking abt that show rv wendy and seulgi were on where wendy does a 'black girl accent' and one of the other panelists says 'african american woman are scary' and 'white people are more prim' - it was just so blatant and unexpected it really took me aback. its just frustrating black culture has had such a huge influence on kpop and they respond with stereotypes.
i watch anime and am involved with the community of anime and it’s just as worst. black cosplayers get hated on for simply cosplaying a character from an anime, some shows draw black characters poorly, black voice actress get hate for va anime characters, like there’s so much more that i can say. i don’t listen to kpop much but i do feel that both of us being black is something we can both relate to even if we’re in separate communities
When the world needed her the most, she arrived. The start with dating bans 🛐 i like it already and agree 😭 Edit: Just completed the whole video and as usual ofc I'll say it's great but the implication of "fanservice" but never in REAL LIFE lwk putting light on the situation of lgbt idols and how their careers get destroyed GENUIS. Ik it's very controversial to touch that topic but thank you for mentioning
you touched on the idol fan issue so well like “i put food on your table” yeah these fans think that they own these kpop idols this is ownership not love, i do love my faves there is definitely attraction there but as a sane person i know it’s one sided and it’s fine, a little bit of delusion is like not a problem we all have our fantasies but there should be a line that shouldn’t be crossed, we should love and support our idols and not want to own and control them, and these idols have hundreds of thousands and maybe even millions of fans for the bigger idols like bp and bts imagine what it would be like if all of these people actually could claim ownership of their idol. yeah idols should be grateful to their fans and fans are kind of the reason their faves are famous and successful but they repay you with their work not with their lives.
_"it's a lesbian thing ,you can do it for the fans but not in real life"_ damn Fact! 😬 I remember Jeongyeon saying that one JYP staff discussed her and Nayeon's "REAL relationship" because off cam people around them starts speculating their REAL relationship as _Lovers_ , staff ordered them to stop doin' Fan service and be distant from each other WTF ! 🙃
Thanks for addressing this! Preach! Kpop/culture is being such an obsession for many to a point it's sickening. Don't follow the mass just to give up your unique individualism to collective trend behavior! Have things balanced. This video is such a fresh breath of air 🙏🏽
im SO happy that you showed the companies being the problem rather than the idols themselves!! like these idols have little to NO control over their lives lol
waiting to meet a kpop stan like you irl who isn't delulu, appreciates the group for it's music and not visuals and isn't obsessed with fair skin and skinny bodies. it's SO hard to find fans who don't think they're gonna marry their idols like damn calm down touch some grass 💀 you touched on some very important points, thank you for the effort!
I hate how much kpop put eurocentric beauty standards on a pedestal. Its infuriating to know that almost every boygroup/girl group has had some kind of plastic surgery. I'm sure this had some kind of negative impact on korea. As an asian American I'm already used to the very little asian representation so I thought kpop was a good outlet. But their representation is so eurocentric. Not even natural 100% koreans look like that. It's like why just why?! Kpop has the power to change the narrative and uplift and showcase natural asian features. That literally would help so much
I don't think these standards are exclusevly eurocentric because if so there would be much more white or half-white idols. These standards are very specific for koreans, and i think they existed way before american culture influenced east asia that much. The idea of fair skin superiority has been there for a very-very long time. So don't make a big connection here. Korea has fucked up beauty standards but it doesn't mean they want to look like white people.v
@@cncowriter3151 yep, at least in the west teens don't get bullied into plastic surgery and get comments about the tiniest fat or casually gets questioned about your weight by anyone (god forbid reaching that 50kg). Edit : don't forget the most important part, if your skin is even slightly dark, you're not gonna be on the top choices. Either wear sunscreen 24/7 and avoid the tan like the plague or bleach your own skin if you're born with it.
@@Lenlon703 Yeah, as I said, western standards don't match the Korean standards one bit. It crazy how these dumb teenagers are saying shit and everyone just agrees like 🤡😅
This whole video is straight FACTS! And it's hard because you want to support the band, but not the company- how do you do that? I have no idea. Though I kinda just only follow the band's channel (if they have one) on youtube, and not the company's. Idk. Anyhow, I love your stuff Emily, thanks for keeping it real and fun! Stay safe out there!💕
I'm glad you highlighted that it's the fans that causes these companies to respond this way. If a scandle unfolds or an idol isn't as attractive, a company can loose investments and have their stock suffer. They can also be met with visious and outright vile fan or anti reactions. The companies write their contracts and force idols/trainees to do certain things because they are trying to protect their investment from a very fickle and reactionary general public and fanbase. The only victims end up being the idols themselves while the company and the fans slowing ruin the lives the people they both have emotional or monetary investments in.
as a kpop stan i completely agree. I would love to see them dating and be happy like Dawn and Hyuna. If you're a true fan, you would be happy they are happy :)
I don't listen to K-Pop. I am more into the neighboring country of Korea, Japan. Speaking of which, the same shit happen in J-pop, maybe even worse. Some companies forbid dating to singers so that fans can "fantasize" about them. Which is totally ridiculous because we all know our idols are never going to notice us, or even meet them in real life. I too, have a special idol I love the most I would love to meet or even get in contact with them, but I'm scared I'll be dissapointed. Why do I do this to myself?? 😢😢😣
Honestly, these issues are prevalent in KPop, but the entertainment industry as a whole, all over the world, is like this and has been like this for decades.... Truth is, the KPop industry is just adopting old practices. The Wheel of Greed and Profiteering keeps turning, eventually traveling all roads.
Have you seen P1Harmony’s interview and articles on cultural appropriation and respecting black culture? I like other groups too but as a black kpop fan piwon is the only group I genuinely trust.
U still don’t know them off camera tho on camera they may act like this very some group of young boys but off they could be racist sexist misandrist misogynist homophobic anything. I’m not saying they’re bad idk them but I’m not gonna assume they’re nice or bad
Thank you Emily for speaking on this. I am a black kpop stan and it gets tiring having to watch my favorite artists using cultural appropriation as “hip style” or “ethnic pop”. It honestly wouldn't be a problem if there were more kpop idols internationally who actually come from those minority groups that they take away from. You can't have your cake and eat it too.
EXACTLY!!! I just find it weird how normalized making cultures some sort of “aesthetic “ is in kpop. One of the reasons I don’t really listen to that much kpop anymore.
This is exactly how I feel and I have been listening to K-pop since High School and or you want count BoA's Every heart Inu yasha ending OST. I'm surprised you didn't talk about infantilization of the idols and the double standards.
I love Mafumafu. He sings/screams so good. I heard he got a gf, and that’s good. A lot of singers I like have gotten into VTubing, and I’m glad they seem to be having fun. I still like their music regardless
another issue is the age some idols debut, like i'll see a new group and at least one of them will be like 14-15 and that age is probably the WORST time to be in the public eye for anyone and everyone to judge you.
kpop and stans toxic traits - training and debuting minors, most of them male or female are hypersexualised and forced to meet 50 year olds at fan meet and greets - the diet culture forced on idols and which also is triggering younger fans into EDs - stans, looking at blinks specifically, comparing every freaking idols to one another, bringing one up and tearing the other down, like head down in the mud - toxic shippers, gay or hetero that is - the ones who think they own idols and go ballistic at any interaction between their fave and another existing creature - everything is wrong with kpop omg 😭
I've also heard that there's a major issue with homophobia in the k-pop industry. Ik u didn't talk about it fully, but u did mention it in passing, so that tells me u know it exists. Idk too much about it, but I find it really disgusting that idols are encouraged to "act gay" around other idols for the attention of queer fans, but aren't actually allowed to be openly LGBTQ+. It also causes a really big issue with shipping within k-pop communities. Really intense stans will make videos called "so and so being really gay for 10 minutes straight," or whatever, and the whole ten minutes is just them breathing in the same area, or being completely platonic friends. This is harmful for both queer and non-queer idols, because if you're being shipped with someone u consider a close friend, it will eventually become harder to talk to them, because people only talk about "how cute u are together," when u just wanna hang out with ur friend. And for the idols that are closeted, that can make them feel really unsafe and exposed when they're not in a safe place to be openly queer. Idk too much about this subject. I only watched a 40 minute video on homophobia in the k-pop industry, so if I missed anything, please let me know! P.S. also don't even get me STARTED on the cultural appropriation of black culture. As a black person, after seeing the abomination that is the anime fandom as a whole, I've decided to interact with fandom spaces as little as possible or not interact with the content at all.
It's true that fan service and queer baiting is a big big issues in kpop and no one talks abt it enough. As a queer person, I'm tired of companies profiting off of the "idea" of us cuz they know that it will sell off with western fans but not too "queer" for the local fans to bigot them. Fans also LOVE to assume idols' sexuality and the "___ supports gay rights" and it's just them holding a pride flag???
@@Tom-dn6zy Ok And? I can like anime and point out the problems within it. That's possible yk. Also this is a character from a webcomic, which u probably didn't know cuz it's all th same to u 🤷♀️
@@lavender4658 You said the whole anime Fandom is an abomination. Which I thought was funny because you had an anime profile pic so you're part of the Fandom as well. I also like anime
the wedding part is so funnt cuz it literally happened with chen from exo xD like fans were literally protesting his marrige in front of the company lol
... there's also the debt issue and how many of the idols never make a living from their work - specially those from small companies or those that doesn't "succeed" in the industry... it's sad to see that most of them leave school and in their 20s they have no career but a huge debt from your training days, recordings, gigs and dorm bills... i really enjoy kpop but, I would like to see more idols debuting slightly older so they could really have a choice somehow if their companies decide to not debut them or to disband a group that wasn't successful...
i agree with you that during the training period idols should certainly have lessons on a wide range of cultures so they can be educated on the variety of cultures which are sometimes inspired by in their discographies. Also, they should also at least geniunely apologise as a bare minimum because sometimes idols do the wackest shi but never apologise for their insensitiveness like??
THANK YOU FOR SPEAKING ON THIS! The kpop industry is truly toxic even though I do love my groups and kpop as a genre and entertainment factor I can't look away from the horrible factors of the industry
this is kinda why I don’t really engage or listen to kpop anymore. So much unnecessary drama and “scandals” to hide the actual messed up issues in the industry. Also too much kpop idols or groups have done so much racist and problematic things that it just gets repetitive and weird since most don’t get help accountable.Btw love ur videos
Becoming a kpop idol is also such a huge and effective trap because most kpop idols become trainees while in high school so they miss out on education that they need to get a job, and if they don't debut or if their group doesn't do well, they're going to need to pay off the debt of their companies sponsoring them for all the years they were trainees, so they HAVE to debut and their group HAS to do well to be able to make a living and pay off their debts, which also means that they need to follow all of their companies demands until their fandom or influence grows big enough so they can gain some autonomy. It's so sad.
Yeah South Korea and East Asia in general (idk about Mongolia) is “developed” but culturally they’re so far behind. The overwork culture came from when they were invaded by the Japanese. They literally overwork all of their people like dogs INCLUDING idols. No matter what job you have in SK be prepared to work yourself to death.
Behind every talented artist in kpop.... is a company controlling them. I use to like kpop a lot but nowadays everything in kpop seems artificial, and made just to impress fans...like the idols behavior or speech.
Yeah, from an outsider pov, the kpop industry is a miasma of what's wrong in the greater entertainment industry. SA, eating disorders, misogyny, parasocial obsession, cultural appropriation, racism...... The list just goes on and on.
i am a big kpop fan skz my number one group and im mostly a bg stan but i listen 2 gg and i honestly agree with u the kpop industry is so disappointing makin me tear up an shi😭
Emily: "The Problem(s) in the kpop industry" Me: Oh boy this is going to be a long one. It would be faster to list what is not problematic in the kpop industry at this point
I'm not a k-pop fan but i was aware of a few of these things. It's really sad and scary how the industry works. I really respect that they are still going through all that and giving the audience the amazing performances. Also love the bloopers 😂
it's so upsetting when you love kpop but know that there are just SO MANY problems in that industry. and also I forget sometimes that being a Korean fan and an international fan can be SO different. but it's like that with any entertainment industry I feel, just a lot of problems
THE WAY I SCREAMED FROM HAPPINESS WHEN U SAID YOU WOULD LOVE TO MARRY YOOHYEON OF DREAMCATCHER OMD URE A SOMNIA TOO IM SO HAPPY RN (BUT IM ACTUALLY MARRIED TO HER ALREADY AND ALL THE OTHER MEMBERS, SORRY)
I'm still so annoyed at how people forget some idols are straight and not gay just because they are clingy, let them be close omg. Yes, I will allow it if the idols are aware and are actually okay with being shipped like MiChaeng and MinMi but I still don't like it when people assume sexuallites and do fan fictions and make literal delusions about them. I hate it when people bring a popular ship into a unpopular ship post. Like A. Cute Miyeon and Shuhua hanging out B. Soojin is probably jealous A. They are just hanging out tho... Stop doing this "jealousy" thing. Plus, if it were an actual couple then I wouldn't consider it a healthy one if the jealousy thing is so common between them. I know sometimes ya'll are joking and I know cases were they actually get jelly but in a funny, silly way but sometimes ya'll need to stop being delusional. (no hate to the idols i mentioned)
i've been in the kpop fanbase/involved since 2015 and tbh things have just gotten worse from what i've seen. while some groups are getting a LITTLE bit more freedom, the groups are getting younger and younger. i'm also a black kpop stan, so it's hard to find a group that isn't really racist of disrespective of black culture. like damn can i enjoy the music (kpop instrumentals are good as HELL) without the creator being racist or something :,). i know this isn't a fix all for the industry, but i'd like some thoughts on my thought here (if that makes sense). i don't know the ins and outs and im not a professional BUT what if: trainees aren't allowed to start training until 15 or 16 and must be at least 18 to debut. also time must be put for their schooling so, idk, they aren't OVERWORKED
I think the main reason why they keep on debuting younger idols is for them to have a long "expiry date" Kpop industry has this silent ageism problem, I know u already know this but most ggs usually end their careers at the 7-year mark, either from disbandment or just gradually losing their popularity. 30 yr old is "too old" for most kpop fans, so to profit off of these idols longer then they'll need to debut younger idols.
@@Elli25 ahh yes, the 7 year curse. know that one all too well. i get what you're saying about profiting off of them for longer like??? 30 years old?? they still have a long and healthy life to live.
She only dated Lee Dong Wok because she was instructed to by the Korean government because they wanted to cover up a scandal, they broke up around the time it started to fizzle out and they weren’t needed.
It makes me feel better about myself to know that people like you are also stuck in this kpop sh*t 👍 The sad part is that one could make ten more videos of these just for the overview. One would have enough material for an entire semester of uni if we're going for the deep dive 🙈
The problem with cultural appropriation scandals its truly that the companies have ZERO pressure from our online outrage. Very few companies are well connected to stan twitter and the random things that trend. Just because a hashtag is trending 'for you' doesn't mean it's making a real impact on those that need to see it. Every time something gets posted on Pann, the korean commentors dismiss it, call international fans 'i-roaches' and say they cant stand us. Korean companies will read these and be like yea see? they ARE overreacting and boom they dont care. Korean companies are going to read and process Korean reactions, not my random stan acct tweeting in English. And until the entire culture there is changed and less racist, we are not gonna see improvements. The whole country needs training not just idols.
I did not know who Yoohyeon from Dreamcatcher was before this video started. After a quick google search I uhh... Girl... I get it. Planning our wedding now
2 years later and this topic is still relevant. That parasocial skit had one thing missing for authenticity and that would be the wreaths. Fans are psycho! Reality and parasocial fans will never be friends.
The thing about kpop idols looks is it's the fans fault to an extent. If the fans didn't care about how the idol looks the Idol wouldn't have to be hot. But how else are they gonna fantasize about the perfect inaccessible spouse if said spouse isn't hot? And it's not only kpop, all music genres have this problem unfortunately. And especially with female singers/idols/artists. The male artists get a pass most of the time with being average or even ugly. Legit no single male kpop group has attractive guys in it (to me at least). While the girls have to look like models or else.... An example of this would be Hyoyeon from girls' generation when they first debuted, everyone called her an ugly duckling, even their stylist said she hated styling Hyoyeon because "she's too ugly". A few changes of style and plastic surgeries later and people started finding her hot and stopped bullying her for her looks. If they didn't care so much about it she wouldn't have to do all that. On the other hand her agency mate Shindonh was and still (iirc) fat since debut and sm didn't make him lose weight, though the fans don't like his weight for some reason the agency cuts him some slack. While Taeyeon has to eat a salad and one chicken breast a day 💀 In conclusion it's the consumers fault for being obsessed with musicians' looks when they shouldn't.
Have y'all seen how Dayeon (Kep1er) and Won (Ciipher) got into a rumor that they're dating? And some people send them hate comments, saying they should've kept their relationship hidden because they're both rookies. Like, I'm...confused??
I think the dating ban has to do with the production mode of kpop industry. Most of the media content (including kpop) used to be delivered through television, it is a one-sided media and as a fan or audience, you can only "accept" it. It's a one-way communication. However, with the rise of social media and accordingly fans' increasingly heavy involvement in the making of an artist, fans' power constitutes a crucial power in the rise and status of artists (so that they can get onto mainstream media even if they're not from the biggest entertainment companies such as sm). Fans play a larger and larger role in the star-making process which of course makes their attachments to the artists stronger and stronger. Artists themselves and companies of course benefit from this process, so that they have to cater to the needs and demands of these "powerful fans", and thus dating-ban culture becomes a thing.

It's obvious that eating disorders are pretty common in the industry.
fat-shaming isnt real.

I love Mafumafu. He sings/screams so good. I heard he got a gf, and that’s good. A lot of singers I like have gotten into VTubing, and I’m glad they seem to be having fun. I still like their music regardless
another issue is the age some idols debut, like i'll see a new group and at least one of them will be like 14-15 and that age is probably the WORST time to be in the public eye for anyone and everyone to judge you.
kpop and stans toxic traits
- training and debuting minors, most of them male or female are hypersexualised and forced to meet 50 year olds at fan meet and greets
- the diet culture forced on idols and which also is triggering younger fans into EDs
- stans, looking at blinks specifically, comparing every freaking idols to one another, bringing one up and tearing the other down, like head down in the mud
- toxic shippers, gay or hetero that is
- the ones who think they own idols and go ballistic at any interaction between their fave and another existing creature
- everything is wrong with kpop omg 😭
Fans also LOVE to assume idols' sexuality and the "___ supports gay rights" and it's just them holding a pride flag???

... there's also the debt issue and how many of the idols never make a living from their work - specially those from small companies or those that doesn't "succeed" in the industry... it's sad to see that most of them leave school and in their 20s they have no career but a huge debt from your training days, recordings, gigs and dorm bills...
i really enjoy kpop but, I would like to see more idols debuting slightly older so they could really have a choice somehow if their companies decide to not debut them or to disband a group that wasn't successful...
i agree with you that during the training period idols should certainly have lessons on a wide range of cultures so they can be educated on the variety of cultures which are sometimes inspired by in their discographies. Also, they should also at least geniunely apologise as a bare minimum because sometimes idols do the wackest shi but never apologise for their insensitiveness like??

THANK YOU I’m so glad someone with a platform is speaking about this so it will actually get out!

Like
A. Cute Miyeon and Shuhua hanging out
B. Soojin is probably jealous
Finally someone spoke about it like another mem can't hang out with another member without saying things that the other member is probably jealous
OK...one of you with influence needs to trend #YoohyeonPlusNotEvenEmily
i've been in the kpop fanbase/involved since 2015 and tbh things have just gotten worse from what i've seen. while some groups are getting a LITTLE bit more freedom, the groups are getting younger and younger. i'm also a black kpop stan, so it's hard to find a group that isn't really racist of disrespective of black culture. like damn can i enjoy the music (kpop instrumentals are good as HELL) without the creator being racist or something :,).
i know this isn't a fix all for the industry, but i'd like some thoughts on my thought here (if that makes sense). i don't know the ins and outs and im not a professional BUT what if: trainees aren't allowed to start training until 15 or 16 and must be at least 18 to debut. also time must be put for their schooling so, idk, they aren't OVERWORKED
THANK YOU some of the fans really need a reality check l.
The fact that Katrina from Aespa actually had to write a public apology for dating someone is absolutely insane
She only dated Lee Dong Wok because she was instructed to by the Korean government because they wanted to cover up a scandal, they broke up around the time it started to fizzle out and they weren’t needed.
And idols preach "love yourself" quite irony
I love that you're able to make this poin while also entertaining us 🤣👍👌Also did you see Yoohyeon this comeback🔥✌️😫
I'm happy to admit that the fandom scares me more than algebra 2 exams ☺️
It makes me feel better about myself to know that people like you are also stuck in this kpop sh*t 👍 The sad part is that one could make ten more videos of these just for the overview. One would have enough material for an entire semester of uni if we're going for the deep dive 🙈
"I have many posters of Asian women in my room who are not me." 😭😭😭😭
It is so common for people in korea to get plastic surgery that my 14 year old korean cousin is getting a double eyelid surgery next week.
Most of the times k-pop feels like high-school all over again and I'm too old for this but yep Rosé posting on ig would pull me back
Dreamcatcher
Thx for the ED trigger warning Emily ❤❤
Ok, but Emily and Yoohyeon would probably be pretty cute together though...
I did not know who Yoohyeon from Dreamcatcher was before this video started. After a quick google search I uhh... Girl... I get it. Planning our wedding now
I've always felt uncomfortable about what goes on behind the scenes of kpop that I just never got into it. And off the cultural appropriation
While Taeyeon has to eat a salad and one chicken breast a day 💀
In conclusion it's the consumers fault for being obsessed with musicians' looks when they shouldn't.
Or more specifically, to whom they(company&artist) owe (commercially, not spiritually)
