  • 🚨PRE-ORDER MY NEW COOKBOOK TODAY! triedtestedandtrue.com/enjoy-... "Enjoy! 101+ Pressure Cooker Recipes for Everyone" will ship early December. 🚨 Hey guys! I'm Lisa Childs, welcome back! In this new video, I'll be sharing with you 5 things I NEVER make in the Instant Pot. These are controversial things that a lot of people DO love and make all the time, but it's just my personal preference of what not to make in my Instant Pot.
    If you do love the things I don't, YAY! I'm super happy for you because the Instant Pot provides a huge time and energy savings. It's just my personal preference so we can all agree to disagree and still be friends, okay? 🤷🏻‍♀️ I also know a lot of my friends and fellow bloggers have recipes for all of these things I mentioned, and they may be delicious! This is NOT a diss on those people or recipes!! I absolutely think there are good recipes out there and I just haven't lucked out, yet! So, please don't take this as a personal attack :)

    I did a chuck roast with carrots, potatoes & onion in the instant pot last week. It was the best tasting piece of meat I've ever had. We usually have leftovers & we had none. We had 2nds & my boyfriend finished it off with his 3rd dish & he dorsn't normally eat that much.

      Ohhh yeah. Roasts and stews are great. I find if you slow cook them, it slow cooks out the flavor, so always pressure cook.

    if you are using gluten free spaghetti it is great and does not change flavours and is not runny at all. My roasts are super tender fall apart and with the proper seasonings it's better than the oven. I've been cooking for over 45 years and I have to say the instant pot can reproduce and surpass the oven in many cases. I think as any cooking it's technique.

    Agree with you on all points, 100%. I also have not tried and probably would not try proofing yeast dough in the instant pot as I think rising too fast compromises flavor. Pork shoulder is OK, but also agree on roasts. Almost all beef roasts have gotten too expensive to take a chance.

    I'm new to instant pot cooking. I never tried spaghetti because I don't like my noodles and sauce mixed together, and I prefer my noodles with a bit of bite to them. It just seems to me it would taste like canned stuff and ...no. I saw someone make hamburgers, literally putting them together with toppings and all on buns to cook in the instant pot 😝 yuck. Some things are just better the traditional way. Thanks for the info!

    Hello from Montreal ..... I do agree with you..... I have a Instant Pot only from my birthday last december... I have tried many things and like it very very much, except the slow cooking function with the Instant Pot official glass lid for it.... it did not work very very... it did not beat my old Crock Pot .... I think that Instant Pot have still to work on this .... Have a great day !

    Expensive meats, unless you have a sois vide option on your instant pot. OMG game changer. You still finish it on the stove, but it's amazing. I agree spaghetti, unless I need to use it as a short cut, I prefer boiled in salty water for my pasta.

    I love the honesty. That just makes you more legit. Your 2/15 hardboiled eggs are bomb, btw.
    Once I found my times for both duram & whole wheat spaghetti, I haven't looked back. I see what you mean about starch, but when I brown ground turkey for the sauce, it's one of those few times I can transition from saute to pressure cook without needing a mid-recipe descale. You'll never convince me spaghetti is bad :) While agreeing with you on hamburgers, expensive meats and roast, I'm also likely to Instant Pot my roast as well :)

  • @lmorgee5
    @lmorgee5 4 роки тому +1

    One hundred percent agree! Especially regarding the pot roast!
    Nothing better then a slow cooked pot roast.
    I would add to your list Brussels sprouts and Broccoli! Brussels mostly turn to mush and don’t get the beautiful caramelizing. Broccoli also....mush!

    I was with you until the roast part...I always use my instant pot for inexpensive roasts! I was raised on pot roast and cannot tell the difference between oven or stovetop pot roast and instant pot...do you sear your roast before pressure cooking? Makes a real difference.

      @kimm3258 4 роки тому +4

      I really did not like pot roast hated it in fact. Ate it for over 30 years and it just was not good until I got an instant pot. That is the best tender juicy one I have had. Part of it is the sear part is that it is in a bit more liquid than when cooked in the oven. The slow cooker is ok but even that way did not get as tender as the instant pot and I do not always have enough time to cook in the slow cooker.

    I LOVE making spaghetti in he IP. I have never had a problem with it being starchy and everyone who has had it raves about it and the convenience. I use the half size noodles and arrange them like a sunburst. I increased the time by 8 minutes and the noodles are perfect.

    A caveat on roast: I love use my IP on the slow cooker function, and you can brown the roast in the IP on the sauté function which is crucial to me for giving the best flavor to a roast. Perhaps you don’t like tying up you IP that long when you have other things to make, but you do a disservice to this wonderful device relegating it to pressure cooking only.

  • @jekkajo
    @jekkajo 4 роки тому +3

    I’ve tried two roasts in my IP, they were good and done quickly, but I agree, they come out so much tastier in the slow cooker or oven. It’s basically a convenience factor for me, especially if I don’t get to the grocery store for a roast early enough to use my slow cooker.

    In my opinion, your comments are very good in general. The wonderful Instant Pot has mostly ups - but a few downs, for sure. Like you, I have not had big success with roasts, and I would never want a burger from the IP... but the IP spaghetti and meat sauce recipe I use turns out great. Most valuable IP success stories: hard cooked eggs, any dish with chicken in it, pork tenderloin, baked potato soup, 15-bean soup, corn on the cob, rice, veggies in a steamer basket for pressure cook 0 (zero) minutes. I cook with my IP almost every day and don’t know how I ever managed without one! I appreciate your honesty and expertise. Thanks so much!

    If I dredge & sear the roast really well first, it tastes great in the IP. I also add a tablespoon of ACV in the liquid.

      ACV..now that's different. I suppose it is the acid in it that does it...I use tomato puree or juice or even Bloody Mary mix if that's what I have. Gonna try ACV

    Just got an instant pot for Christmas. I tried a chuck roast and was pretty disappointed. The veggies were great, but the meat, not so much. Will stick with the slow cooker for those. Glad to hear it wasn't just me.

      My family and I like the spaghetti and lasagna in the instant pot. It reminds us of as if it sat in the fridge over night and then was reheated. It has lots of flavor. I think it's funny how people have different taste and texture preferences. I even made a video on spaghetti in the Instant Pot (this issue is kinda funny). I would also make my roast in the instant but I wouldn't put my veggies in there just because I think one or the other doesn't taste as good. Again it's a preference thing. Thanks for sharing. I agree with all the rest unless the steak is tough and not worth the bite lol.

      As I mentioned in a comment from another video, I have used stovetop pressure cookers for MANY years and now the Instant Pot. I think you are quite correct...that one appliance does not replace everything, however well it works. I remember when microwaves came out and for a while, they too were promoted as being able to do everything. Each appliance or kitchen tool is part of a TEAM, each having its own strengths. Your video is very timely!👍

    TOTALLY AGREE!!!
    Don't bake, burgers & fries are sacred, don't elegant meal create, spaghetti is faster made the traditional way and tastes better, and a roast is meant just for that...roasting!
    Great job!

    First I admit we've not use the instant pot very much. Mostly I just don't think about it. But I completely agree on all counts even without ever having tasted those things in an instant pot. First I can't even imagine somebody trying to make a hamburger that sounds absurd to me. And yes it definitely needs the crust from a heavy skillet or griddle. Spaghetti you need to let it simmer and let those flavors meld together and even after cooking it all day it's still better than next day when they've all melted together even more. I was glad you mentioned the connective tissue in a roast. The thing that makes the roast so good and so succulent as you said it's letting all that connective tissue breakdown and that takes time. Absolutely a job for the slow cooker. Even the oven I don't think makes near as good a roast as the slow cooker. I just found your channel and as you can see by comments I'm enjoying watching quite a number of your videos.

    I’ve made roast (cheap cuts of meat, not prime rib or equivalent) in both the Instant Pot and in my slow cooker crockpot. They come out about the same. It depends on how much time you have until you’re ready to serve. Slow cooker takes 4-6 h, instant pot about one hour. If the roast is large I cut it into smaller pieces. I brown the meat on all sides before adding veggie broth to simmer in.
    When you cook cheaper (leaner) cuts they tend to dry out more because you need to cook them longer. The secret to a tasty pot roast is the gravy. Make a good gravy using the juices the meat was cooked in. I use packaged gravy mix, it’s never let me down! During the last few minutes of cooking the gravy add some plain Greek yogurt and stir well. Serve over mashed potatoes with veggies, and you have a great meal!

    I completely agree, but I will say Barilla, Skinner, & Tinkiyada gluten free pasta doesn't do that strange consistency like regular pasta. Chicken Alfredo is amazing in it, and if you get a good sauce for spaghetti I'd love to know your opinion on gluten free! The other brands of gluten free haven't worked well, though, just those 3 for me so far! Love your videos! So informative!!! I'm a seasoned chef, and I think everyone could learn from your channel!

      I cook pasta in the microwave (just in Pyrex measuring cups of different sizes) and eat a lot of different brands of gluten free pasta. Tinkiyada (rice and rice bran) is exceptionally good at holding up to cooking, doesn’t fall apart at all. I wonder if that’s what determines what works well in the Instant Pot as well? Lundberg rice pasta also holds up very well, I think they also use a mix of rice and rice bran. Will have to experiment once my IP arrives.

    I upvoted this for #3, quality cuts are wasted on a multi cooker, the thought made me cringe, but it does wonders for the not so good cuts. Agree on spageti, but I have a penne dish which works well. Don't like pot roasts that much full stop, it's hard to beat an oven roast, but I often use my multi cooker for chicken and shoulder pork for convenience, and for corn beef it's a must. Love your channel, excellent advice and realistic in regard to the strengths and weaknesses of multi cookers

    Love this! I have a Ninja Foodi and it is wonderful BUT not everything is good done in a pressure cooker. Some foods are just so much simpler to make on the stove top and taste so much better that way.
    I LOVE the my Ninja Foodi but abolutely agree with you on ALL these things.
    I used a Ninja Kitchen recipe for paella. I had a lot of reservations about the recipe as it seemed a weird way to cook a paella, but I gave it a shot.
    Well, even though it had heaps of liquid, it said to add water after trying to pressure up for ages. If I had had any sense I would have stopped then and tried it for "doneness", but being a newbie, I added water and started it again - it was a two minute cook after pressuring up.
    Well, the flavours were excellent so that was good, BUT the rice was absolute MUSH, and with all the liquid, it was more like a chicken, chorizo and seafood soup!
    Will NOT be doing that again. I'll use the same ingredients, just do it on the stove top and get a true paella, adding the seafood at the end so it isn't overcooked and so I get the crispy bits at the bottom of the pan.
    Thanks Lisa for your great recipes and amazing ideas. I love Amazon to really enjoy your videos on kitchen tools etc. 👏👏👏👏👏

    Hamburgers?! I had no idea people did that! I use the IP for a lot of stuff but that seems to somehow go against the laws of nature. LOL But I agree with you completely on all points. There's a reason some things are cooked the way they are. I tried a dump recipe for spaghetti and didn't like the almost sticky texture from all the extra starch. Speaking of controversial, I won't use the IP for boiled eggs because my years-old steamer method on the stovetop works so well, and it only takes 15 minutes.
