@evanspipes Just 2 wee questions: what are your thoughts re NSP being used for other types of music? Also, re occasional open ornamentation (cuts, rolls, etc). I am thinking seriously about buying a set but would like to use some wee gracings. Ruiseart.
I'm trying to pick up the rhythms, think I'm getting it and then lose it again. Is there something very different in this way about Northumbrian music?
@ruiseartalcorn It depends what types of music. Dick Hensold plays a wide range as does Kathryn Tickell at times. Both have technique firmly rooted in the tradition, but an open minded approach. I'm not in favour of open fingering/ornamentation- I think the traditions of the instrument should be respected- but each to their own! Richard
Scotland can keep her Highland pipes, these are by far my favouite.
Lovely sound :)
Thanks Colin- I was very pleased with the tone of the chanter, less so with my fingering!
That's a lovely medley, Richard. Well done! Greetings to you from Jarrahnut (Colin) in wonderful Western Australia.
Thanks! D is an unusual pitch for Northumbrian pipes, the traditional pitch is F.
@evanspipes
Thanks for the advice - most appreciated.

@ruiseartalcorn
Glad you liked it. Quite different from the f set.
Richard
Maybe the way I'm playing it! Swindon and Tweedside are 3/4, Keelman is 6/8, and Lady's well is 6/4, but I'm playing that last one a bit freely.

Beautiful medley! What`s the story on the 5-string on the wall?

the Northumbrian pipes were made for Northumbrian music. Northumbrian and scottish music are both very different from 1 another.
It's an old fretless, nylon-strung, vellum head and very light construction. Found in an attic, bought for a few pounds. Sounds terrible!

You should do whatever you like with whichever instrument you play. There are plenty of traditionalists. Expand the repertoire beyond all expectation.
D chanters are unfortunately rather tricky to play for small people such as myself.
