'Influences of Scotland, Ireland and Brittany are well represented, along with a wheen of tunes by M. Katz, and the entire collection is splendidly worth a listen to discover - if you haven't already - how talent and imagination can drive piping forward'
The Scots Magazine
I met another Mike Katz about 40 years ago; Mr America, Mr World of " Pumping Iron " fame. But this Mike Katz has another incredible talent.
We Pipers all aspire to play this clean. A truly gifted Piper and has brought joy to many a battling Pipers ears. Thankyou Mike for bringing such high credit to the Piping World.
Pipe Major Chris Laurenson, Queensland,Australia.
After listening to many clips of small pipes, I like the sweetness of Mike's pipes and the clarity of the tunes.
Pipes by Ian Kinnear.
small pipes in the natural key of c! i love it!!!!!!!!!!!
A strong and at the same time soft sound... Amazing... ✨❤️👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼❤️✨
For twenty years now I've seen this man 'become' the music he plays. Not an ounce of the magic has gone; it has matured.
These pipes have such a brilliant tonality - stronger than Northumbrian. Mike is a top player and would be welcome to join our band any time
Met Mike a puckle years ago at a Birthday party in Dingwall, where he did me the honor of playing twa o my regimental tunes Farwell tae the Creeks and Hector the Hero very apt as he was a Rosshire loon
Beautiful tone from these pipes
Mike -- your quality of piping is what we all aspire to!
This is easily one of my most favorite videos on UA-cam !
Really beautiful music, thanks for sharing it!
Such a great sound and player Thanks for posting
They (the band) were in town last night Nov 4...another outstanding concert.
Thank you for posting-beautiful.
Those are some amazing tunes!
Awesome Small pipes + Awesome Beard = purely Awesome
What depurated style!!, awesome. I would have a teacher like that.
Great playing and recording the instrument.
@bituco94 I do as well. The sound that these pipes are generating is absolutely beautiful.
Now my friend, that's pipes as they want to be played!
inspiring!! thank you
Beautiful...
Ich bekomme jedesmal eine Gänsehaut.
AMAZING.
Great piping and great beard!
great job!
Most talented bagpipe playing Rabbi in the world
Lol
p
He never seems to be wearing his kippah though. 🤔
Foreskin leather bag's produce the best tone.
He may be Jewish but he is not a rabbi. Very good bagpiper! And he plays every known bagpipe so it seems.
best battlefield band piper for me
Nice set sounds almost electric
Wonderful. I imagine it takes so much skill to coordinate the pumping and the playing.
It's not intuitive but also ... not that bad. The hard part is internalizing the various "widdly bits" that one uses to articulate the tunes - IE, the fingering.
Merry Christmas!
Divine!
All, first tune is called Sunset on the Somme.
@ODoda Movingly played!
Thanks
very good
@KyussWhitewater
The Irish War Pipe was a modern (80-90 Years ago) Invention by bagpipe makers Henry Starck of London - They Patented the keyed chanter found on that. It was brought in and used in pipe bands in the Irish regiments of the british Army. The great Highland bagpipe in its present form came into being in the mid 1700's prior to that they only had two drones. MacIntosh's Lament is the oldest known piece of Ceol Mor frm 14th Century - 2 Drone Highland pipes were fully developed then
Just amazing expression and feeling. Easily one of my favorite videos on youtube to listen and play to.
Thank you for your musical brilliance.
piping at its best!
Very musical
And i thought those were Irish pipes. Sounds awesome!!
AWESOME!! It reminds me a lot some musics of Chrono Chross and Xenogears( Squaresof Inc. ) games. kinddaaa interesiting thes sounds (h) .
Does anyone have notation for any of the tunes? Would love to get my hands on the dots for the first one in particular.
what is the name of the first tune?!?!?!?
@godzilloid
It takes skill, but it is the kind of skill that can be acquired through dedication and daily practice. It doesn't happen overnight! Mike is blessed with an ear for music and good hands, but he worked hard to develop his abilities.
Having seen Mike Katz playing in the Battlefield band at Eden court theatre a few years ago I thought he was very worthy of former piper Dougie pincock
I love this tune. Where can I buy this?
Does anyone know what make of pipes he uses, they sound fantastic, Key of C?
Thank you.Ill invite you to my next party;-)
@seonidh
Your Tyneside union pipemaker was a fellow named Robert Reid.
For the record, though, the vast majority of union uilleann pipers were Irish born or of Irish descent. Many early pipers were members of the Anglo-Irish aristocracy, or professional musicians who were patronized by the same aristocracy. Once the aristocrats fecked off to London after the Act of Union though Irish pipers had to fend for themselves, and that's how the instrument got ingrained in Irish trad music.
hey jude!!!!!
Mike, Excellent tunes, thanks for posting. Can you list the names of the tunes..especially the Strathspey?
Any idea where i could download the sheet music for there tunes?
Can anyone tell me the difference between a scottish pipe and an irish one i have a pipe player at my church who said the were different i just dont remember in what way?
interesting pipes
@USEROBINMORTON Thanks you. But in what are the difference between a bellow scottisch smallpipes and a Uillean Pipes?
What is the name of the reel? Tune is fantastic!
I feel proud of the pipes I play! Any idea what that first tune was?
For those who are asking, I'm in a band that plays a 2/4 march variation of the first tune (instead of the air played here). In Gaelic it's called Nil Se'n La, I have no clue what the English translation is.
Feel free to correct me, upon second listen, I could very well be wrong. It's sounds similar enough though.
It's irish and it means "It's not day yet"
It's irish and it means "It's not day yet"
Is it the same scale as the bagpipe chanter?
nossa c eu termina de ve esse video eu durmo... como algm consegue curtir algo assim ? ashasuhuase
The strathpey name is "The Fiddler". Unfortunately I don't know names for the march and reel.
Fabulous playing! Could you tell us the name of the tunes?
Hearing this guy play is so damn interesting, Liquid Tension Experiment should recruit him for one or two projects.
Name of first tune????
@bituco94 From what I can tell, they look like Ian Kinnear smallpipes in C.
Does anyone know the name of the reel (third tune)? Thanks.
Tunes are:
1. Sunset On The Somme. (G.S. MacLennan)
2. The Fiddler. (Donald MacLeod)

Guckst du : www.pipemaker.de - > Smallpipes Paddy macht gute
I know those are small pipes but what brand. I want to purchase a set of small pipes and love the sound of these. What are they? PLEASE RESPOND
what key is this in
Does anyone know the maker of these pipes? I love their sound (of course, whose fingers they are matter too!). David Stewart
Pipes are in C. Made by Ian Kinnear.
What key is it on? Isn't it D.
Beautiful! Especially for one with a German (Jewish) family name. Strange enough that people all over the world ask me why I play the pipes being German. Maybe I just should emigrate to the U.S. to avoid being asked again... Apart from that Continental Europe (including the German Bohemian Goat) has an old piping tradition, too.
Mike is from Los Angeles, further away than you☺ Pipe away!
Every country in Europe had their own version of the sackpfiefe
a oder d key?

I feel like i'm not alone in wanting to the know the name of the tunes. I'm pretty sure the first one is called "Sunset on the Somme", but I could be wrong. I really love that Strathspey, anyone know the name of it?
The Fiddler.
The tunes are, sunset on the Somme, the fiddler, and Beyoncé's welcome to Leith.
Great stuff!!!
Does anyone know the name of these tunes. Especially the first one.
Please respond if you know.
It has been said that it is the Sunset on the Somme
imagina uma versão dessas no Guitar Hero! hahahhaha
question! what was the first tune played on the pipes???
Yes -- please! Can anyone tell us the title of the first tune Mike is playing?
Sunset on the Somme @@AAMacKenzie
what is the name of the second tune?
The Fiddler
@MagiDrummer
Sunset on the Somme
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the Great Highland Bagpipes the same with the Great Irish Warpipes? They're both mouth-blown and I think I've read somewhere that they were introduced to Scotland through Irish immigration. They actually look the same and they're both mouth-blown.
Hey, it's so beautiful (would like to play it on my fiddle). I do play by ear, but I sure would like to know the name. Thanks. Dave Tate Stewart
Beyonce?
Luke Harvey do we know who wrote it?
Luke Harvey I'm sure it would be. In that case we also don't know which Beyonce it's referring to.
Sorry - finally added the tunes to the video description above...
They are:
1. Sunset On The Somme. (G.S. MacLennan)
2. The Fiddler. (Donald MacLeod)
3. Beyonce's Welcome To Leith. (M.Katz)
and you can find more recordings of Mike at www.templerecords.co.uk - cheers!
I was just wondering if anyone would be kind enough to send me the music for these tunes? If not all then definitely the last 2! I would be so grateful :)
Is that an open ended chanter? sounds a wee bit poppy a la Northumbrian pipes.
PARECE MESMO! hahahhahahhahahah
That beard can make a great noise !! May Scotland be free for ever more of english fish and chips ,oh and you can have the haggis as well its horrible !
It isn't a Uillean Pipes?
Tell Canada ,,,,he’s ours ,,,,,he’s no gaun back
- 4 min da sua vida que vc podia ter feito outra coisa de bom nao perca vc tbm !!!
BradockMan, não seja ignorante....
Are small pipes very expensive? Look specially made.
+boaire they are not as expensive as a full set of pipes. It really depends on who makes them. Some go for a couple hundred dollars, others can be in the thousands. I have a set of small pipes that are for sale that are reasonably priced. contact me if you are interested or if you have any questions
Matthew Lance
I might be interested. Lets talk.
boaire
The one in the video
£ 1500 at least
Obs: Esse campones tbm tira leite de vaca... As vezes ele se distrai e tenta fazer a vaca berrar as notas musicais!
