- It's week 2 of residency and now it's my turn to be on call. However, my week definitely does not go as expected. I might actually be the luckiest resident who has ever taken call on surgery. Although the patient load wasn't what I expected, I still feel better about my role as a resident when taking call and the responsibilities that come with it. Hope you all enjoy the vlog!

Another episode of The Adventures of Shaun and Depal lol. I think this is the most relaxed surgery call I've seen from any medical youtuber lol. You look like you're genuinely having so much fun with Depal lol. It must've been a slower week at work because you even have time to give us another weekly vlog lol.
Haha the adventures continue! Yeah it was definitely a super relaxed week 😂 I’ll be doing another week of call at the end of the month and there is no way it can be as slow so we will see how that goes! Overall tho we are having tons of fun :)
Honestly man, this way of vlogging is just so entertaining. I've watched the whole thing and never got bored. It just gives more realistic vibes without the music and with only basic editing. Keep it coming 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Dude that makes me so happy that you like this style! This is pretty much what my channel started with, and it feels good to go back this style. It’s also a lot less pressure on me to make the vlogs since I don’t have to worry so much about the shots!

Along with my excellent surgeon, I came to have an appreciation for the anesthesiologist who kept me safe and alive. 🙏🙏 You both have bright futures! P. S. My daughter just became an RN. Her best friend from elementary school just became a doctor. ❤❤

that one 24 hr on call shift was literally what i make for a months of work...
The hospitals in Canada no longer serve anything deep fried. Everything is healthy fresh food options. You can still get stuff like grilled chicken, but no more fries, or anything fried.
That aside, I’m so proud of you Dr. Andersen. Keep being a rockstar. It won’t be too long before you’re doing your boards and becoming a board certified Anesthesiologist. So proud of you and much love. ❤️💜💙
I am in Alberta, Canada, and I am noticing the same trend. There is no longer fried food, but the number of carbs in the ready-to-eat processed free foodstuff is so tempting.
Interesting! I would love healthier options, which our hospital definitely does provide. We just have to be more conscientious since we have so options and temptations.
I’d love to see a video where you describe the surgeries you do/how you set up for each case if you’re able to film in an unused OR. Loved the vlog this week Shaun keep it up 💪🏼🙏🏼

Trauma nurse here, i love playing music in the morning when we finish our charting. After rough shifts it helps us leave in a good mood.
It definitely helps get the spirits up and sets a good tone for the day! :)

I’ve been watching ur vlogs since freshman year of college! Just graduated. But didn’t get the grades I remotely needed to get in to med school. So I’m switching into business. But watching your vlogs makes me wanna reconsider or at least try a few gap years to get in! Keep up the good work man!

I first started watching your vlogs when I was applying for med school-- the first one I saw was the SWAG package you got from UNLV. I watched through your first year religiously but once I started med school myself, I've watched less consistently. I'm now an M4, and will be applying neuro, and watching your last few vlogs have given me hope that residency doesn't have to be this big scary thing. Really looking forward to continuing to follow your journey.

I am glad both you and ND MD are doing anesthesiology. I want to go to med school and anesthesiology is my top specialty. Why? I’m a nurse and on my rotation, I saw both an ENT and a nurse anesthetist and it kinda gave me as spark to be in a position where I can either chose those two specialties. Both the surgeon and the anesthetist loved what they were doing.
Long story short. These vlogs helps me understand what I am up against, and so far, they have solidified that I actually do want to go to med school and become specialize in anesthesia ( or ENT).

Good for you looking so happy doing something as dreadful as residency and especially surgery call! I hated residency and fellowship and only now am I truly happy chilling and living the life.

I definitely would much prefer to have nonstop patients, etc because when I’ve had jobs where I had “dead time”, it’s so much harder to get back in the groove versus being busy consistently.

Why are you on a surgery rotation as an anesthesia resident?
Do you participate in surgeries by overseeing surgeons, or do you only provide consultation before surgery? BTW Love these videos, keep them up!
We see the consults but also scrub in for the surgeries with our attendings! Since we are interns, we are basically just their first assist

Great vlog man, I’m a country masculine gay man, I really enjoy donating to the anesthesiologist Foundation, since it was hard for me to go to college because of my cerebral palsy, I really wanted to be a anesthesiologist, I’m 34 from Memphis, are you gay? Just asking, I can’t drive because of my cerebral palsy, so I’m gonna get my all electric car and let other people drive it for me! You rock man, it takes a special person to be an anesthesiologist or CRNA and you’re one of them, I look up to all anesthesiologist and CRNA! Anesthesiologist is the best!

Is there an adrenaline spike to know that you are the person they are calling to go perform a surgery? It has to feel good.
They should especially give medical people 3 day 12 hours as well

Surgery call seems very different from IM or neuro. I don't see the same family questions, discussions, or drama that come up during the evening hours. I think the vibe of the vlog will change when you do ICU
Probably because surgery is treated more like a consult service here, so it’s quite focused. I agree tho things will change when I do IM and ICU
@@ShaunAndersen That makes sense. I've done neuro primary and consult. The main difference is what you have to take care of and the approach. People don't like primary because of the extra things you have to cover. However, consult services you have less control over. If a primary service doesn't do what you want, you can't force them to do it. If you want anything neuro specific to help you in IM/ICU/Surgery, I would recommend taking the online ENLS course (neuro emergency) to know what to do if you see status, stroke, or anything else with your patient. At least you'll feel more confident when you consult neuro
Also, get that STEP 3 done asap

Question: I see that the hospital provides doctors snacks and drinks. Do they do the same for the nurses? Do nurses get the same free snacks and energy drinks as well?
I’m actually not sure what their setup is 😅 good question though. I’ll have to ask one of the nurses at my hospital!

Love the vids man! What was the average age in ur med school? I’m currently in DPT school but ultimately want to go to med school but I want be done with DPT school till I’m 28 and prob won’t start med school till 30. I’m worried that’s a little too late. Dream is to do orthopedic surgery!
Yooooo! That’s totally fine. I had tons of classmates in their 30s. You only have one life and the time will pass no matter what, so you need to do what is going to make you happiest

I am! I’m doing a transitional year and one of the requirements is a month of surgery
