      I'm earning a doctorate in counseling, and we get paid zero for all our prac work until we finish with our second prac (it means at least 3 years of no pay while giving therapy to clients). After that, we are eligible to earn something, but that's not necessarily the case. On average, you can expect to make 23/hour for advanced prac where I live (midwest USA). During internship, we make about what you make for residency, around 50-60k for the year. However, that's only 40-50 hours/week with a relatively appropriate caseload. You guys are working almost double, and I'm sure your caseload is huge.
      Yeah, it's a travesty, and I agree.

    I just found your videos yesterday and I’m hooked! I love how positive and enthusiastic you are. I start my respiratory therapy program in a little over a week! I’m super excited to be an RT. Regarding salary, it’s actually crazy that RT’s are making just as much if not more (at least where I live) than resident doctors! I’m definitely not discounting RT’s work or skills, but residents obviously carry much more responsibility, work longer hours, and have an immensely higher skill set.. so that’s just crazy how much they pay you. Anyways, keep working hard and keep spreading joy, positivity, and love for medicine! It’s awesome 😊
    P.S. If I ever decide to pursue further education/skills I also want to get into anesthesiology!

    Medical coder here. In short, teaching hospitals receive higher reimbursement for their claims to cover cost of training and so forth. However, there are trade offs. For example, providers must justify billing of assistants by documenting why a resident wasn’t able to fill the role. (This is a grossly oversimplified explanation but hopefully you get the point). Hospitals are making great money off of you guys. BTW, before I became disabled I was making three times your salary working from home with a professional certificate that took a year to complete. You will be wealthy in the long run though, and you get to be heroes!

    Hi...Enjoy your vlogs, first time commenting. I have almost 25 years of experience now (finished residency in 2000 in PM&R) as an attending/practicing physician, and I think the way you explain and express your point of view/concerns is very reasonable/mature. I think the issue is that residency is a weird hybrid between student/work (this issue actually prompted a big legal battle about social security withholding and credit with resident salaries...especially because GME funds for hospital have a federal funding component....during my era. 5 years after my residency ended, the legal case was resolved and I got a large check refunding me part of the social security taxes that had originally withheld because residents were deemed half students under grants and not solely "employees".). So....this is why the pay doesn't seem to match up. Also, I think one area where medical education is very lacking is financial literacy. Medical students should be taught the consequences of taking large loans and encouraged to consider how much they REALLY need to borrow (yes, tuition, housing, and food are needed....do you need vacations during medical school or do you need the most expensive car right away? It all sounds great when someone else is footing the bill until you have to pay back that loan.) Medicine is definitely a career or delayed gratification with potential high gains later if someone can just hang in there. That being said, despite being honest and not saying things are all roses, you seem to have a great attitude and I wish you the best of luck!!

    New subscriber. Your videos were recommended by Google for some reason. Glad they were. Watching your series so far makes me painfully aware of one thing. Need to start asking more questions about care with medical staff. NOT my care, but theirs. It’s really concerning the shifts you go through, the lack of sleep together. If I’m getting an operation, I want my surgeon well fed, plenty of sleep and not distracted. Seeing times that you’re pushing though 10+ hours without food? Doesn’t that make you even less focused? And please understand, I’m not blaming you, doctors or nurses. It’s the system as a whole. What can be done about this in your opinion? How do you keep morale high when you’re going long stretches without food and a lack of sleep?

  • @nightshockplayz5894

    Nearly half a paycheck to register for Step 3.
    Idk how one can justify the pay residents get as being enough: You have to be paid enough to live NOW to even make it to being an attending.
    Residents are underpaid period. A resident may be paid 60k a year, but at double full time. You can say it is 30k a year equivalent of 40 hours a week being full time. Most people would agree that 30k a year is pretty bad for full time work (40 hours a week)
    Thanks for advocating for residents, as always!

    Hey Shaun! I was wondering if you could talk about something in your vlogs that I’ve wondered for a long time. What types of things are you able to do on your own as a resident, and what things require attending approval/supervision? Similarly how do they decide when you are “ready” to do a new procedure or make certain decisions on your own? I’ve always wondered this, from watching Rachel’s videos and she’ll say something like “oh I did a C section completely by myself for the first time”… how do they make sure residents aren’t making severe mistakes that could harm patients and leave residents feeling terrible? I’ve always wondered this as a pre med student.

    • @ShaunAndersen
      @ShaunAndersen  3 місяці тому

      We can do most things as long as it is supervised. The more times we do it though, the less supervision we require and the more hands-off our attending is. For example, we don't see our attending most of the day but they are checking our orders and notes and we are reporting to them during rounds and signing out new admissions. When it comes to surgery for example, our responsibilities just increase over time the more we do things. Eventually, we can do most things with hands-off supervision

They use to say food was bad I’ve always found it great in the cafeteria not while being a patient 2) how far do you live from work? Your battery always seems to be at 40% and looks like you’re charging at work. Thanks

    Hey big brother from seeing you do a lot of charting and writing during your work hour I really advise you to go get a fountain pen
    It uses a water based ink which is way smoother then any ball or jel pen you do not have to apply pressure to write then you do when you write in ball pen
    Like lamy safari pen would totally work for you it is rigid can withstand drops
    Again tell you that I not advertising this pen
    As a fellow (will become) med student who do a lot of writing stuff like you do in your video I do have concern for your hand that’s why I am giving this advice to you to relive some of those pain that you are having
    And in your next video please ask Dr deepal
    “KEM chho bhai maja ma ne ??”

I was glad to hear that there’s a cap on weekly hours now (80?) but that’s still unsafe and the fact you’re salaried is crazy. Things need to change throughout our healthcare system because it’s pretty broken at the moment.

    Teachers get paid a full year salary in like 9 months so they are paid for their time for sure. Especially if they are in the union. Those teachers not in a union they need raises and those teachers working with young children in daycares they need raises. The unionized teachers they make more than enough and get paid for the summer months. They are fine.

    • @ShaunAndersen
      @ShaunAndersen  3 місяці тому +1

      It doesnt matter what you major in! For Oncology, you just need to do residency in internal medicine then fellowship in oncology

    • @ahoward3819
      @ahoward3819 3 місяці тому

      It doesn’t matter what you major in, people with business degrees go to med school. But it makes sense that if you have a major that emphasizes things like human anatomy, physiology and biochemistry then those classes will be a little easier once you get in to med school. One important thing is to look at the requirements for med school and make sure you are fulfilling those requirements as you get your undergrad degree. So often you have to have so many credits in things like biology, chemistry, microbiology, etc. It would suck tho to be ready to apply for med school and then figure out you are missing a required class and you must take that class before you can apply. Also something to consider is what will you do if you change your mind about going to med school or you don’t get accepted into med school? It helps if you have an undergrad degree in something that will help you get a job or something that you would consider going to grad school for a master’s or other degree. For example, some people that get their undergrad degree in Biology, and then choose not to go to med school, will sometimes choose to go into a program where they can earn a teaching degree. The possibilities are endless. In undergrad you should seek out a counselor (if one is not assigned to you) that will help you choose the right courses for whatever you choose to pursue. Finding this person (to help you work out what classes you need for whatever you are pursuing and also will help you if you change your major or choose to pursue something different) will be the most helpful thing you can do for yourself as an undergrad student. Best of luck to you!
