This week we use some parts National Parts Depot Mustang horn parts to repair and replace the '65 Mustangs missing and abused horn system. We give you some tips on diagnosing and repairing the horn system on most cars while getting the dual tone car horns on the 1965 Mustang Coupe in good working order. We also show how to use a steering wheel puller. We show adjusting the vintage Mustang, Fairlane, Falcon and Comet steering wheel to column spacing.

Enjoy the fact you don't gloss over the times when a repair doesn't immediately work. Showing how to deal with that is the best information you can provide.
Just replaced my steering wheel with a new Scott Drake unit. Horn wouldn't work until I adjusted the steering column as shown here. Thanks, Jeff! This video helped me trouble shoot my issue and now my interior is nearly perfect!
You guys are making my 69 Torino GT project sooooooo much easier. Thank you for doing this stuff! Maybe now I will get past that infernal inspection and get my registration up to date!
titanshub Thanks! We're glad to help. We hope to be ramping up the Fairlane even further soon. Right now, we're adding power assist steering. Next we'll hopefully be doing some chrome "cheats".
I really appreciate these videos. They have been clutch during my 65 galaxie restoration.
Thanks for such a comprehensive solution guys! This video helped me track down and repair a long time, irritating horn problem. Ironically it was the same yellow wire and uneven contact that you experienced. My original GT wood grain steering wheel horn is now working FLAWLESSLY and I have a good understanding of what makes it so.
im in the process of restoring a 67 fairlane gt...and you guys have been a lot of help..especially for all that wiring stuf...so i just want to say congrats, love the show..and above all else..thank you. phil.
We try. Just ask that you let others know. Jeff also has a weak spot for the Fairlane GT. Glad we can help.
Keep the videos coming guys, iv learned alot by watching these so thanks for taking you're time to make them.
You guys are great! Thanks so much for going through this process.
You are very welcome we appreciate you watching
You are welcome! All we ask is to get the word out to other car guys and gals!
i just did this last week ,you folks make it look so easy !
Sorry?
Another very informative episode gents! My horns don't work, I got no action and this has given me a starting point and a bit of knowledge to tackle it..... So I think anyway! :)
Thanks again
Thanks guys, I referenced this video heavily when I fixed my horn. Turns out my steering column wasn't even making contact with the steering wheel...and the horn plate was on backward. One thing I must add is everyone just says "remove those two bolts and the steering column will just sllliiiide right up" mine did not, I had to get a crow bar between the steering box and the shaft to get it to budge.
If it hasn't been off, it can be a pain. Glad we could help!
John, we'll cover that in the segment we have planed for the turn and brake lights. We're working on how to do both GM and Ford since each system is a bit different.
You are welcome!
We've seen this problem from aftermarket installs from time to time. It could be that the contacts are not completely touching the horn button. Remember, on a '66 you can change the column depth, try that and contact us on the web site if this does not help.
thanks for posting this later
Gents,
I tackled my horns this weekend. I checked all you described and got the horns to work when I test them at the turn signal horn posts. My problem is I put the steering wheel in place and it does not seem to touch the horn contacts. There are two screws that the steering wheel contacts connect to that if tightened wont even allow depression but in any case with the steering wheel in place I am getting no power to the actual steering wheel contacts but I do have power at the contacts. A
wow thanks. How would you tighten the steering column again? I have a 58 Fairlane. It was worked on. Now my horn honks by touching the steering wheel slightly or when it turns. As well, I noticed that the steering wheel and column is loose. I think the steering wheel just needs to be tightened so it doesn't touch the horn assembly without it being pushed.
LC, at 16:23 we talk about that. If you are working on a 1968 and later Ford it won't help. contact us via our web site and we can help you get closer to the goal.
The operation of the horn is known as a relaxation oscillator.
Is that anything like the rotating oscillating Ccooling device?
Only one of my three horn buttons gets a sound out of it. Should I just replace the whole signal assembly? I’m getting power out to the horns.
This video explains everything perfect and I'm looking to buy the exact kit you have shown in the video but that part number just brings up "spring horn ring or button" and "springs and screws woodgrain wheel". Is there any way to get exactly what you have laying on that table? Or should I just find/buy them all seperate?
Sadly this was before we started putting parts lists in the section below the video. Just make a list from the video and contact NPD.
@@AutoRestoMod Awesome. Will do and thank you so much for all these videos they help so many of us out!
It'd be a cool idea to have someone go through them to catagorize your videos by car year :)
Im curious why you did not touch on the install and function of signal stalk.
That's why we use the tag line "sometimes we mess up." Actually Jeff did know what to do, But Vinnie didn't so being the evil genius that he is Jeff let Vinnie figure it out because those make for great teaching moments. Just hope Vinnie doesn't read this...
Hey, Jeff and Elaine from Senfield have something in common....
Just a suggestion...try adding closed captions to your videos so hard of hearing people like me can learn here too. There's lots of us out there.
I stumbled on you guys after I looked up installing a horn on older cars... I just bought my first car and it's a 1978 Chevy nova custom... doesn't have a horn. I am so lost.
msMJ64 First order is to get a wiring diagram. Then start back tracking from a set of operational horns. If the wheel is an original, make sure that the contacts are all good. Check this episode too: ua-cam.com/video/oj4VUsC5P44/v-deo.html
We are not responsible for what goes on up there Jevchance....
i just finished installing a turn signal switch on my 66 mustang,i have a grant steering wheel.the horn works fine, but it sparks under the horn button.it's when the metal touchs metal.i don't really understand this.
Bobby Williams mine doesn’t that also. What was your solution
there is no 12 volts at the wheel...it's where it grounds at
Does this apply for a 66 Mustang Coupe?
Yes.
you guys know the problem if the horn works then you unhook it and hook it in again and it doesnt work? I bought me a new horn but still does not work. Can I have made a shortage or something?
Go through and check all your connections. We'd get some test leads and start testing the contacts. It will probably be an issue there.
My radio on my 1967 won’t get signal at all only the cassette player works
Check the antenna and you might think about an upgrade.
I think that’s the problem
lol the images in my head!!! AHHHHH
Now why is that Mustang you were showing me how to mount the steering wheel in when you take off with it it's an automatic but the picture shows it's a stick what do you think I don't know the difference between a stick and an automatic I'll have you know I've been driving a stick for as many years as you are old and still prefer to drive a stick
Well, the only thing we can think if is that you have watched the videos on the Punisher and this car. One is a '65 with the three-speed, the other a '66 with an automatic. 😀😆
I don't need to see your faces. I need to see how I works.
