How is that his stepmom? Either it's an act or that's an interesting family there.
True story : My older female friend with no mechanical skills or tools "heard a noise" in her car so she went to the local auto shop down the street. They gave her an estimate to swap out motor mounts - a leaking CV joint and a serpentine belt for $ 1300. She then brought the printed out receipt to me and said they want $ 1300 and there is a noise. I am a lifelong mechanic etc . . and so - the motor mounts were not damaged at all - the CV joint was not open and/or leaking and the serpentine was fine as well. And the engine and parts were so clean you could eat off of them. And so - in a "nutshell" - the service manager ( likely working off commission ) saw an older lady come in the shop with a very vague complaint and heard "cha-ching" in his head and saw dollar signs. AND - the "noise" was some 2-liters and a container ROLLING AROUND in her trunk when she drove. The car had NO negative ISSUES. And - I had a suspicion that if the shop was this dishonest - would they have gone even further - and done absolutely nothing - ( not changed any parts ) maybe found the 2 liters etc , , and moved them into the back seat - and simply called her - accepted the $ 1300 payment and handed her the keys and said "have a nice day". ?
So cool she is willing to get her hands dirty, help, and willing to learn. She is awesome and you for helping her

If you're replacing your spark plugs, never use a power tool to remove or install them. When installing them, you should be able to hand tighten them (any difficulty means you're most likely crossing the threads and need to try again) and then finish tightening it down with the ratchet.
If they were gonna break with a power tool, they were going to break with a hand tool too. Definitely agree on the reinstall though, bad move and you're risking cross threading

Love these types of stories. My cousin, and several other people, call me when they have a auto problem and I save them $. My cousin's alternator failed and a shop quoted her $1,000 for repair. I removed the alternator took it to parts store and discovered it was under warranty. Got the replacement and she was good 👍🏿

Great work Sam! The Mercury Marauder and the Impala SS were known to go the distance with a bit of added power. I’m sure you would be able to make some adjustments without sacrificing reliability.
I’m sure that after doing these repairs, this v8 will last for many more miles.
It’s definitely a safe vehicle to drive, although within the past year and the rise in fuel, it may be a bit more costly to fill up.

Glad you helped her out and didn't let the garage take advantage of her. Bought a new car from a dealer many years ago. I worked nights and slept during the day so my wife took it to a local shop for an oil change for me while i was asleep. They gave he an app for an in house credit card and told her that the water pump was leaking through the weep hole and that the power steering fluid needed changed because it was the wrong color. They thought they could make a few hundred dollars off of her when they saw a woman coming in.

Repair shop in Germany tried to rip my sister 3000$ for 30 min job. Invoice claimed 28 hours of labour at 80 dollars per hour and 1200 for a new starter(160 dollars at the local toyota dealership). They even had the audacity to ask 150 for diagnozing the problem although they knew from the begining it is a failing starter motor. They had never even opened the bonnet. I have never been so rude in my life as I was with these guys. Btw it's illegal to do roadside repairs in Germany, which I did anyway :)
I had similar (in Brandenberg) independent did some work...seemed OK but we took my wife's car back for scheduled service and he quoted €1500 as the car needed new rear calipers. We asked for a breakdown and he was using pattern calipers but charging 180% of genuine Citroen parts plus 4 hours labour!

I just replaced the EVAP canisters under my 2011 Crown Vic also. One thing I've learned is that if you're not familiar with these systems that some of these repair shops will take you for whatever they can because they know. I absolutely love the Crown Vic and I welcome any more content with it

Needed a new strut bearing mount on my Volvo, common failure item. Shops wanted to replace entire strut, told me you couldn’t do just the bearing mount. Needless to say the quotes of $500 plus, i did it for $70 and one hour.
Good for you. I have. Volvo XC90, have a love / hate relationship with this vehicle. Maintenance is a pain.
@@lzh3131 IPD has a heavy duty version that lasts a lot longer than the standard one. Look for Heavy Duty Front Upper Spring Seat from them. It'll save you having to swap them out often. I have an 05 XC90 2.5T, it's actually been pretty easy to maintain but the PCV service was a pain to do since the previous owner let it go to the point the drain was full of carbon so I had to drop the oil pan to clean it. That sucked.

@@Jordan__Sloan the standard strut bearings can fail in twenty to thirty thousand miles. So your strut will be just fine and all you need is the bearing for $30ish dollars. Design flaw and bad roads leads to early failure.

Vic guy here. I have to add some stuff about the P0193 code. Yes, it could be a fuel rail pressure sensor, or it could be in the wiring to the FRPS or even the PCM itself.

This is the sole reason I left working for independent shops and dealerships to open my own automotive repair shop. I couldn’t stand customers being ripped off and all the lies. Most, not all places I’ve worked at though. Tons of reviews with a 5 star shop that I’m running.

Okay, from a mechanic and shop owner. Tune ups are a very common DIY. Downside is that with many newer vehicles equipped with aluminum heads have at least 1 awkward plug.
Taking a car to a shop is sometimes a case of "Pay to get it done with insurance". For the specific example of a tune up, if you are doing it DIY and cross thread an awkward plug, you're liable to be essentially doing a top end rebuild when you have to replace a head.
Cost of tune up (Here locally) is about $180.00
Cost of replacing a head:
Head = $250.00 - $400.00
Gasket set = $118.00 - $210.00
Fluids + Filters = $85.00
5 hours labor to have the head swapped = $400.00 ($80/hr)
Yes, there are many projects I will look at the customer and say "You're somewhat mechanically inclined, are you sure you want to pay me to do this?"
Belts, filters, fuses, lightbulbs... that sorta stuff I often don't charge for other than parts.
Examples of vehicles with known issues swapping sparkplugs:
Ford V-10s
Chevy Impalas (3.4L)
Ford 3.8L V6
Dodge Caravans
Toyotas... pretty much any 3.0L or 3.4L
This list isn't even scratching the surface of engineers having difficulty with the concept of spacial geometry.
