Great video, I for one appreciate your taking the time to help fellow "Mustang Lover's" out. Very helpful..........Thanks, Chris
I was stuck on a 1971 Ford F100 Pickup and this was more than enough to get me past early sticking points. Many thanks as you saved me a bunch of time
Chris, this video on turn signal switch replacement and the one on igination switch replacement was very easy to follow and maid my shop a lot easier. Thanks, Jerry @ Bears Rod Shop, TX
Great vid!! One quick tip from someone who has run home electrical circuits is to tape a string on the end of the old harness and pull through then tape that end to the new harness and pull back through... you made this method look easy of course... 😊
I wondered why he didn't do that, myself.
That's a great idea. I just pulled the old switch up an inch or two after disconnecting it at the bottom and cutting the wires loose from the switch. Then I hooked each new wire to an old wire, very neatly, and wrapped electrical tape over this splice. Again neatly and smooth, so I could then pull the new wires down through the column by pulling the old wires down. Then I didn't try to disassemble 56 year old connectors, I just cut the old wires, matched the colors and spliced the wires together. BUT when I was finished the left front turn signal blinks with the switch in the center off position. It will quit if I push up on the lever a tiny bit. Left turn, front and rear work fine, Right turn, front and rear work fine. Any ideas people?
I haven't liked a video in 5 years. You my friend are worth my like.
You are a legend! your videos have helped me so much
Thanks for you great how to! Your videos are always helpful. Best regards from a german mustang owner
Thanks Chris.. This helped a great deal!
This is awesome, I just bought a 68 Coupe Sprint B, and the turn signal lever is broken. Just ordered a new one. I'll be doing this this coming weekend. Thanks for the awesome video
Thanks a million! This was invaluable for me doing this repair for the first time!
I love the video, you were very specific on what to do and how to do it!
Great video, excellent information. Thank you!!
Thanks Chris. Great explanation - you make it look real simple and do able
Thanks for the info! I just purchased a 65 with half the turn signals working. I already bought a new switch so hopefully that fixes it.
Thank you so much. I really appreciate you taking the time to do this video. I would not have attempted this had I not found your video. Well done my friend.......... Grazie
Glad to help...
Great Video. I just used this to do the same thing in my 1972 Bronco. Thanks Chris!
Seriously helpful, thank you for this!
Just watched this, great video, a real help thankyou
I enjoy your videos I would like to see if you have everything on distributor vacuum control module for a 65 Mustang 289
Awesome video thank you for being direct and short you killed it brother!!!! 👏👏👏
Thank you...
I have a 63 falcon and am redoing the wiring and while it's a bit different in my car it is mostly similar. This is very helpful, thanks!
Yes,... very, very similar.
Wiring was right, the aftermarket switch was bad! Found a FoMoCo switch at TJs Mustang locally and it works perfect! best $100 spent in a while!
You should do a video on tips and tricks of installing an export brace and monte carlo bar, it is usually one of the first things someone will do to their mustang and can be very difficult to install if you do not know what you are doing.
Is this process different for a 1970 Mustang with tilt steering. Any special recommendations for replacing one of these switches??
I have learned to use my IPad or camera to photograph parts as I pull em apart - works a treat!
Thanks Chris!! Good ol' Chris!!
Hi chris, the 3 screws were missing on my 64.5 mustang the ones for the indicator switch, dont suppose you know the thread and size of those, so i can rack some down, thanks Tony
Not sure if this has been asked before, but i need to replace the collar because my gear shift lever is very loose. Does that exterior collar unbolt as well? My car is a fairlane, but the column looks the same.
Glad I have found your videos!
Glad to help. Stay safe & healthy my friend ...
LOVED YOUR VIDEO Chris :Excellent direction . No other videos match it. like to know if you can do the same for 1959 corvette also . keep on the good work for the public. THANK YOU & god bless .
Glad to help!!!
VERY helpful!
I have to replace mine because of the horn contacts AND the turn signal is broken. This video was very helpful.
Great video !!
Awesome video 👍
Hi Chris... Have a 70 Mach 1. The turn signals all work properly. Both tail lights light up, but only the drivers side brake light work. The passenger side does not even though the passenger rear turn signal does. Do you think this is likely a turn signal switch problem?
Awesome video.
Thank you! I have been having to tell my Grandfather to turn off his right turn signal since 1996! I have to get on him to let us replace it now.
I have a 72 f250 and changing the turn signal, I had to cut the wires since it was connected with to after market Kwikwire system , my new switch is on the way and I still have the color wires that were cut at the bottom . Will the new switch wire match the cut wires?
This was awesome. Step by step watched as I repeated the process
It sound's like a Brake Light switch issue. Did you check that? Chris
Great video...
Thank you !
I have a 1970 stang. What are the screws sizes used to hold the buzzer and signal switch in place?
The base of the steering wheel has a metal band that is suppose to knock the switch back to center,I would look to see if you have one. Doc
Thanks, great video. I just installed a new turn signal switch on my 1964 1/2 Ford Mustang (with generator) and got it all done but now my brake lights and front left turn signal light do not work. Not sure what's happened but I've checked and double-checked the turn signal switch wiring to make sure each wire matches up correctly. I have no idea what to do next... any ideas Chris?
cool video keep em coming
Hi Chris, I have a 66 buick wildcat and my brake lights are not illuminating. All other light functions are working for me. Im wondering where can I purchase a harness like you have shown in this video? Great video by the way sir.
I don’t need a new turn signal switch “yet”. What causes the tabs to break off the switch? Is there a temporary repair to secure the tab(s) prior to it breaking off?
I love to see a video on the complete installation ore assemble of the interior parts of a door in a 1966 mustang.
I just got my turn signal switch in the mail for my 1964 1/2 with generator. It went almost as easy as your video demonstrated. Prior to installing the new switch my left rear brake light wasnt working, but now does! however, my signals flash like a hazard flasher when the handle is returned to the middle position. The signals work properly, left right etc when selected but both flash when returned to the mid or off position. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Doc, you don't know me but you have helped me more than you know. You've helped me with radiators, Hood alignment, so many more things. I have a question for you. It's regarding my turn signal. I have to hold it down when I turn left and when I turn right it stays up and I have to manually pull it down. Is that an adjustment i have to do or do I have to replace the entire system? I look forward to hearing from you.
Hi....Glad my videos have been helpful.. To answer your question. Some of the turn signal switch's roll is to cancel the signal when the turn has been made. There is a plastic apparatus in the middle of the switch that allows this function. The plastic over time gets brittle & breaks. The bad news is that your gonna have to replace the switch assembly. The good news is that you have a great instructional video to help guide you thru this ;)
Great and informative
It sound's like you have a few other problem areas. Check to see if you have current going thru the brake light switch when the pedal is pressed. and if you have current running to the front light as the light or light socket may have a bad connection. Chris
hi again...i just put my dash back on and had to re wire some things on it..everything is fine BUT! the left hand turn light is not flashing on the dash i have power when i pull lights switch out it goes on. also i can here the relay going so thats working both indicators and lights are working front and rear just not the dash lisht on left turn...i looked at the turn signal switch and it looks fine is there a test i can do on it?
Hey Chris, Where is the fuse box on a 66 mustang. My speedo, temp. and amp lights are out on my dash. I will check there first, but could you tell or show in a video how to replace dash lights?
excellent video...................
yes today i had to run my own wire from the brake switch to the brake lights. now it works. thanks
Very good thank you
you dont suggest the turn signal switch as shown in the video?
Thanks Chris...
Excellent
Great video. Very concise and easy to follow. Installed a new switch and had a little trouble getting the wires to stay in the connector other than that everything worked well EXCEPT the front drivers side and front drivers side indicator. The flasher clicks and the drivers side back blinker works. They work when hazards are on but not the blinker. Any ideas what I need to check?
If all the connections are snapped in. I would say its a bad switch. Even new switchs can be bad.
Chris Ingrassia that's what I was thinking. I couldn't find anything else it it could be. I've spent about 4 hours tracing wiring to see if I could find anything loose but found nothing. My old switch worked and all of the lights worked but it wouldn't stay engaged, so I know everything WAS connected. Thanks for the quick reply.
Ok Chris, I got the new switch installed and same issue, drivers side front blinker and indicator not working but everything else works fine. I discovered that the flasher stops on that side when I press the brake. Is that a crossed wire in the connection?
do you have a video for complete steering column and horn assembly replacement for 66 Mustang
Hi. The electricity for the horn's runs thru the turn signal switch. The horns themselves are mounted behind the grille. They are not something that can be taken apart for repair. They would get replaced.
I'll be doing this in the spring as soon as the cover comes off.
Chris,
I’m two hours into this now, because you never said to attach a pull wire to the bottom of the harness where the connector ends of the wire are. Because in a tilt column there isn’t a tube like you show, so now I’m having one heck of a time trying to even get a decently stiff pull wire up through the column. What should have been at most an hour job might take me all night now...
Might want to edit the video to add that caveat to help people with tilt columns
Hi.. In the video I specify that the column switch being replaced is for 1965 & 66 Mustangs. The year of your car is not that. With all due respect. It should have been obvious to you after hearing me say that, that this video did not apply to you.. For some reason you kept watching. That's what got you in trouble.. Not my video..... I am sorry you may have mis understood that.
At the start of the video I plainly say it applies to the 1965 to 66 Mustangs. You have a different year Mustang. Once you heard that you should have stopped watching. That is where you went wrong.. Not the video.... Next time watch & listen.
Chris The Doc Ingrassia I have a 65 Mustang. I did not make any mistake.
Will this work for a 62 Econoline ? Mine has some kind of metal thing that all the wires are sodered to , and what year in mustang would I find a replacement part - thanks
www.mustangsetc.com/61-66-econoline-turn-signal-switch/
Hey Chris..hope you can help me diagnose a turn signal issue. All of a sudden, only the left side blinks. Left signal. works. Right signal nothing. Turn on flasher in glove box , nothing UNLESS I move the stalk to left signal and both flash. This lit up before and the only NEW thing..I added the updated headlight harness that takes the brighter bulbs (with the ceramic ends, relays, 1 power line and only 1 ground for both lights) ...what do you suggest in debugging ? Ahhh...old cars
Hi Bob. Assuming you used an exact replace factory style harness ( not Painless or something like that)….The front turn signals require their own gound. I would look there first.
@@MustangRestorationsInc Thanks Chris. I don't have the parking lights or backup lights installed yet so maybe that's it, Just the tail lights (which work and so do the brake lights) ….I also don't have the headlights in but added the upgraded harness for halogen ..and based on your video, ordered and received a turn signal switch and harness (hoping I DONT have to install...lol) I just thought if the left signal worked the right should too....
Gotcha. get everything back together & see what comes of it..
Love you
Hi. Seriously helpful thanks. The problem I have is when I take a right turn I indicate and turn right. As the steering wheel comes back to centre after the turn it cancels the right hand turn but throws the indicator arm over to the left hand. So I then have to manually cancel a left hand turn. Is it to do with the same switch please?
Try putting a bit of grease around the canceler that has the two raised areas on it at the base of the steering wheel. That may help.
Hey Chris...
I bought the setup that says w/alternator. So it has 8 wires and the unit now has 7 wires. What color is the odd man out and where does it connect to? I’m stumped and I can’t find a diagram ANYWHERE...
Send me a picture of the wires coming out of the old switch you removed. My email is mustangqna@sbcglobal.net
Hello. Got the switch installed easy enough. It cancels as it should, but should it click when turning? Thank you.
No....Try putting a bit of grease along the edge of the plastic canceler arms.
On the old wiring harness that has a connectors instead of undoing them you can take about 2 inches off the old wiring harness and cut the wiring leave them connected in the connectors take the new wiring harness and individually pull one out put the new one in individual wiring pool one out put a new one in to you have it all and at least you'll know what the wiring colors are because they're still there cuz you're not going to use the O2 wiring harness so all you do is cut about two inches of the old wiring harness on all the wires with a pair of wire cutters take the connectors and match them up and Bam
Yes. Being real careful, that would be another way of doing the task.
Chris I have a 68 mustang and recently noticed when the emergency flasher is on the driver side brake light does not flash. Also the brake light does not work same side when applying the brakes . Both turn signals work and driving lights on rear of car too.. I did replace the brake light switch but that did not fix it.. I wonder if it’s in the turn signal actuator?
Thank you
Yes. You will need to replace the switch...
@@MustangRestorationsInc thank you sir! And please keep the videos coming I’ll let you know how it goes. Your the best !
@@budlawrence4847 You to. Stay safe & healthy!!!
Does this work with a '70 Torino, I had a little smoke come out behind the steering wheel where the hazard switch is and now I have no brake lights or turn signal and how does the steering wheel come off. Thanks
Yes.Very similar.
thanks
That set me up for my 1965 Ford F 100 truck. Should be very similiar
This was great but I'd love to see how my column comes out of my 66 Chris.
Thanks.
Hey Chris, thanks for the video, it was a huge help. Since changing the switch another issue arose. I installed the steering wheel, hooked up the battery and found that there was a short with the steering wheel and horn contact posts. Is there a video or anything to help solve this issue ?
Factory steering wheel or aftermarket ?
Chris Ingrassia it's the original factory wheel. I do have a new one just haven't tried it yet.
What is the symptom?
Ok. With the steering wheel installed and battery connected I could hear a clicking noise that I had a hard time finding. Anyhow, I tracked it to the steering column by disconnecting one harness at a time. I reconnected the turn signal harness I could hear it. I removed the steering wheel it stopped. I tried pushing the wheel back on and I could here the noise again and decided that it's the 2 horn posts arcing against the back of the steering wheel. My brother said he had something similar in his fastback. Every time he would make a turn his horn would sound. He never fixed it, just disconnected the horns. Was just wondering if you had ever heard or dealt with this ? Thanks
With the new switch in place. You may have to adjust the steering column down a bit. Take the steering wheel off & the switch should be pluged in. Push on the lower spring loaded horn contact. If it bottoms out on the metal column housing and sparks then you know that the steering wheel may be pushing it past its limit & that is the source of the short. To lower the column. Loosen the two nuts holding the U shaped bracket midway down the column & push the column tube down about a 1/4 inch at a time.. You may have to "break it loose" from the U bolt while twisting the column side to side a bit to move it... See where that gets you...
VEERY HELPFUL THANKYOU also your cat meowed at 2.:31
Thanks for the compliment....... That dang cat ;)
(1964 1/2 Ford Mustang) I have installed a brand new turn signal switch but when turning left or right and back to the center position the cancellers do not work and the turn signal stays on. What could be the problem?
well it seems i only found another way to turn my running light on with my brake switch. i got the switch to work though now but NO actual brake lights still.
What about the turn signal cancellation. Can you show how that works. What triggers the cam to cancel.
dose this apply for the Mustang II as well
Very similar
good afternoon. I'm having a difficult time rebuilding a steering column. I think I may be missing a few key parts. can you please help me figure it out
Sure. Give the guys at Kentucky Mustang Parts a call at 888-861-0176.They have all the parts & their staff will be able to figure out what you need.
Does the turn signal switch need to be in place and all connected before the car will start????? I'm currently changing mine out and all of sudden my car won't start.
What year Mustang do you have?
Recheck the wire 's,make sure you have the correct color's attached. if so,then it's a bad switch. Doc
Nice job, but it would be nice to put the year in the video title or in keywords. This would save people time when searching!!
Went well
I'm thinking it my be better to cut wires and then match them up under the dash where your just cut the old wires
Replace the swtich if that is the source of the problem.
Much easier to feed 3 or 4 wires at a time. It was nearly impossible to feed all the wires at once . Nearly destroyed the wires trying to feed them all together .
Agree. What ever it takes to do the task of fishing the wires thru the column. It may be easier for some columns to send the wires thru a few at a time .
At this point you need to get the car to an experienced classic car electrical guy.
need replace turn signal on impala 1965
Thank you !
thanks
Is it the same idea for a '68 F250?
Yes
