Sometimes you walk away empty handed. I’ve always wanted to go to New York and eat their pizza! Great stuff Gary!

I did the exact same thing , spent 2 hours getting a pile together and then waited 20 minutes while he looked things up, grades can be subjective, I felt he looked at more high end prices for books in mid grade, i started to walkout when he stopped me and took 25% off , still wasn’t a deal, I left. Wanted to go there for years and strangely I felt betrayed lol. Plus everything was filthy.

IF you had weeks to go through it (and could air it all out) that would be a lot of fun to go through. As is, it's mostly just an overwhelming hoarding issue. Oh well, at least you had amazing pizza. That CRUNCH had my mouth watering!

Great video, as usual. I tend to like the "empty handed" videos more than the scores because it makes me feel better about all my comic failures. 😄 Pizza always makes up for it!

That place is insane! I've been there with my father and brother and I'll never forget it. Between the cats, lingering smell, and the THOUSANDS of stuff they have, it was definitely an experience.
Funny story: My father found this little toy and asked how much it was and was told "two fifty" and gave the guy $3. The guy looked at him and said "No, $250. That's a prototype action figure." I'm pretty sure we laughed at the guy, paid for our comics and left lol

How dare a retailer ask you to pay close to fair market value.
I get grades can subjective and they might be overcharging you based on grade, maybe that's why they knock 25% off. We all want a deal, but if they actually charged deep discounted prices like people want then they'd make far less money and likely be out of stock by now.

Loved this video. Though it was a bust, we all have to admit we have been to “this kind of hunt”. I remember finding local comic shops whenever I traveled for work or vacation. Something about being out of your natural comic element and the potential for a key or significant run in your favorite title...Uncanny X-Men was my Achilles heel. I still think there is gold out there in the most random spots. We all just need luck and timing...with patience.

I love those old NYC stores... they are really dying out, but they used to be everywhere. A Fountain pen hospital, or the rubber store on Canal Street... The Red Caboose for scale models in midtown... stuff like that. The owners are always the biggest characters you've ever met! Usually they don't give a damn if you buy anything or not... they have been there forever and after they pass-on there will never be another like it. Sort of sad for NYC... Wishing you were kinder to the owner/store after you exited, but thanks for making this and sharing the experience.

Gary... thanks for covering not just the warehouse but Johnnys also. My fiancé and old coworker always talk about johnnys being the best. I’m more inclined to go now!
I’ve always been curious about the Koch Warehouse and nearly made an appointment a few times. So glad I never pulled the trigger. Your video proved what I was afraid it would be. I often see their booths at NYCC and the old Mike Carbo cons and always had a filthy feel just from that!

  • @ComicBookTrapHouse
    @ComicBookTrapHouse 4 роки тому +2

I go to this warehouse often, when new collections arrive and I can rip through the $1 bins. They definitely up the prices on unmarked books after an eBay search at checkout. I even had them up the price on me from a couple $1 books they said, "weren't supposed to be in there"... FOH. They'll TRY to rip you off but, this is Brooklyn! If you're not trying to make a deal and get the price down they're not gonna discount out of the kindness of their hearts lol! Tell them what you're gonna pay and if they don't like it, bounce! Every time I've denied a price and made my own offer they accepted it.

I've been to the KOCH WAREHOUSE a few times over the years. If you're looking for HIGH GRADE stuff, this is not the place for you. If you are looking to shop at the warehouse you need to subscribe to Koches News Letter. It will tell you when they have NEW inventory. They put it all in the front . I've found some good stuff while searching through some of his finds. Pricing is a whole nother thing. He's tough to negotiate with but he has come down on some books. His specialty is dollar books. The place is old and rotten but there are some interesting things . I went there and found a couple of Kamandi Long boxes. He didn't seem to care for the title, so I wound up picking up a couple dozen of them in Very Fine condition. If you're in Brooklyn on a Saturday morning its a fun place to go. There's an old gentleman that works for Koch who's very cool. He can help navigate you through a maze of what has to be a Million Comic Books 😎

When someone gives me prices (these are $1 each, these are $5 each) and then pulls out ebay when I've gone through and made my selections, it's done. They started the negotiation in bad faith, so there's no good end other than walking away.
If you're going to look up current ebay prices, tell me up front. That, in and of itself, is fine. I deal with people who do that all the time. Just don't lie to me up front and then let me mine through your garbage to find the hidden gems and then change the deal.

But sorry that you guys left empty handed but that place looked very overwhelming and can get lost easily but the pricing of the comics seemed sketchy especially for the worker there to go on Ebay to get a specific price to match each comic to sell. But i'm glad you guys went it was cool and i personally had some laughs i enjoyed it this was great.
Hopefully from this experience all of you will be rewarded to travel somewhere where they'll be a comic store worth going to to find decent books in a professional clean and organized setting.

I’ve been to this place several times, the thing to understand is that besides it being dirty, he has a ton of stuff in various grades, and lots of it is listed on his eBay store, so when you take some out the box, some have prices and most don’t. So he will check prices on his eBay store or he’ll go to comicbookshop.com and see what they have things listed at. And comics are always 25% of, many times you are not getting a deal, sometimes you do. It can be a real hit or miss

Not really sure what you expect when you visit somewhere with so much stock. It can't all be priced. As somebody who works somewhere with a large stock of comics, but only a fraction of what this guy has it's impossible to keep everything priced, and with constant fluctuations in price due to books becoming hot overnight it makes complete sense for a retailer to check prices at point of sale. Have some patience and support independent business.

As soon as you walked into the building, I thought that we may never hear from you again! Sucks that you didn't pick up any books, but that pizza sure looked super tasty.

ive seen this a few times, old guys wanting people to go dig through their stuff and find the key issues they don't know about then look up the price

Two things about this video -- IF you ever find yourself in a similar situation, while the guy is giving the "tour", grab any random half way decent book and ask him-- "so this is $1" - if he says yes- give him a dollar and the sale is final. If he starts looking shit up-- LEAVE without digging. Also-- wish you had filmed/shared the part where he started looking up ebay prices.

Gary go to royal collectibles in queens if you want to see a really good comic store in New York. Lots of keys and graded books fairly priced. Another good store is amazing comics in sayville long island.

A bit overwhelming! I got lost before y’all even entered the comic vault.
