Yup, they have the right to up charge their dollar bin books to $5 and I have the right to decide not to buy anything. I still had a fun day hanging out with friends and that is the most important thing anyway.
And that business ethic is why they can't afford to stay there anymore... I have shady dealers do that stuff all the time. Walked up to a guy at a toy show and he had one long box of comics. Nothing priced so I asked how much before even looking. He told me $1 a book. I pulled out a DC Comics Presents and two issues of Alf, and went to pay, he said that would be $15. I told him he told me $1 a book, he said he didn't. He said he was talking to "somone else" and not me when he said $1. Never mind there was no one else at his booth. Wasted my time and I walked away leaving him holding the books. I run into that kind of dealer at almost every show I go to. Then they are back again the next year, with the exact same stuff they had a year before.

Yeah I am actually really happy I was able to capture the space in 4k, just as a lasting memory of the place. And the price look up pricing etc is never fun for me, hence why I hit the dollar bin I thought that would be safe at least. Oh well there is so many better spots all over NYC to dig. I went to this warehouse last weekend as well. After an hour or so of making a stack to fill up a short box, I was told that their short box deal was only for books in the "Dollar aisle." They are such a mess. Then I picked out a small stack of dollar books. And the price guy actually said, "I'll be nice" and he quoted me the correct price for my dollar books. I was ready to walk out with nothing if he was gonna jack up the prices.
Oh man at least he let you buy the dollar books for the proper price. Its always ok to walk if you think the vendor is being unfair. Nothing wrong with that. Or buying just the ones you think are fair if they jack up prices etc.

I was thinking about going to the warehouse before they closed. I knew they had a cat and the place was dusty, but just thinking about the cat peeing on all the books is cringe. I read a few stories about the warehouse, where he does the switcheroo on dollar books. Joseph Koch had an interview in Comics Journal about the store closing and it didn't seem like he was going out of the nostalgia business. Maybe that's why they aren't really trying to get rid of inventory. After watching this, I don't think it's worth spending the gas or even subway fare. Thanks for the review.
Nice to see some British stuff for a change. Wow, 2000ad, z cars etc, some of the 60's uk annuals are worth good money. Also the marvel Comics priced for the uk market, some collectors won't take them but they're the same books, the price is the only variation!
I went there many years ago to purchase a few foreign comics. I found a some and when I went to check out. An employee looked at them, stepped back 5 feet away from me and examined them. He had to walk 5 feet away from to figure out the prices instead of determining them in front of me!? WTF!!! I agreed to the prices, paid and walked out. Even my wife, who was with me, thought that his conduct was weird.
Yeah I think they just look everything up or that was the way they operated for years. Makes it a bit frustrating. Tried to avoid that unsuccessfully by only digging the dollar bin.
I hate to see a comic book store go out of business but that "dynamic" pricing on comics once you bring them up to the counter is one of the many reasons some comic book stores are going out of business. The ole bait and switch is not a good business practice.
It's always interesting to watch you dig. Too bad they're being greedy instead of making deals to clear it out. I would have walked away like you did too 👍🏻 😃
Digging is always fun, I did have fun filming the place and digging. Its a bummer I ended up with nothing but its not the end of the world. Rather give my money to someone else.
Fun show. You definitely have an encyclopedic knowledge base (who did what covers, writers, etc.) When I watch your video, I need to bring a snack. They are documentary length, 😆 But great to watch.
I always say those who think they know everything have nothing else to learn. I know a lot but always want to learn more, its impossible to have all knowledge.
I've always dreamed of checking out Koch's 'Avalanche of Wonder', and your video doesn't disappoint! It's a bummer about the experience when you went to go pay - not cool! I don't know if I can handle digging through those boxes with all the musty smell and dust though.
Yeah I wanted to capture a video of the place that helps everyone who never got a chance to make it to at least experience what the place looks like. It is tough to dig health wise. Some guys brought gloves and masks, I probably should have done the same.
Totally agree with you, sounds like they try to do a fast transaction banking on the time you took hunting for your items. Keep on with your hunting adventures. Better experience elsewhere next time.
Yeah, I was super tired and exhausted in that environment. I am sure there are some folks who still just pay after that. I am ok walking away though, I rather give money to vendors I enjoy dealing with.
i watched a video of verygary and pressable defects dig thru that same place a few years ago. they didnt leave with much either and said the clerk pulled up ebay for the prices. personally i wish you'd of dug thru more non dollar boxes. i bet that place is full of gems.
Went there many many years ago while visiting family in Brooklyn, guy changed prices to every book I grabbed and if I had multiple copies of a book he’s take them and say I couldn’t buy them, ended up not buying anything and never went back
Ebay sold prices are probably most accurate, the my collection app from Hip comics is fast and easy to use, not 100% accurate but its a good starting point if you want to scan through a bunch of books you dont know to at least give you an idea which ones you should further research.
Sean, Thanks for this one!! Have mailed ordered from Koch back in the day from the HUGE Newspapers they used to put out... Once ordered a full set of the Kubert Tarzans from them ,and LOTS of other stuff!! Sure I'm not the onlly comics fans that wishes I was in on this hunt!! Cool, Cool, COOL!! NObody has enough $$ to do this place justice!!Hoping you find some low # CEREBUS Or at Least SWORDS OF CEREBUS...!!
You are welcome, my friend Billy wanted to make sure I got a video on the channel before this place is gone. I am happy I went, disappointed with pricing switcheroo at the end but I had fun and was able to film a cool video.
Good to walk away, better than regretting overpaying later. When I see unpriced comics at a convention, I pass them by, better than waiting for the guy to pull out the overstreet.
We have an antiques flea market at the forks in Winnipeg Canada and Shaun they have cgc books and 90 S dc comics are $15.00 each. Cgc books priced very high.
Oh I like my local shops Comic Station and Action City comics, both close to each other and i often walk to hunt some comics at both. Gotham Thrift has a massive dollar bin the restock often. If you can only go one place though I recommend the monthly Queens Comic Party events my friend Billy runs. I always find a ton of fun books at a great price there.
I've seen a bunch of UA-cam videos about this place and they all end in the same way, they get to the register and the guy starts jacking with the prices. Everybody ends up walking away.
With that Much, inventory of not crap books, but just random little treasures here and there you think they would be practically giving them away. But Hey 2 each his own, there's plenty of paper out there for sale.
OMG!!! I think I saw an I Lusipher #1 in the dollar boxes you were digging through. It was around the 45 minute mark and you passed it like it was garbage. It can go for about $3000 to most Poison Elves fans. In a God damned DOLLAR bin!
There has to be over 2 million items there and if they advertised $1 each blow out sale they would easily make a million before they have to move the rest to another location. 😅
I know or even start with a fill a long box for $1000 sale sell a dozen then $500 sale then $300 then everything $1 each then fiill a box $200, $100, $50 etc they could blow out so much
Glad you didn’t give them the sale. That’s a crooked way to do business and they should value their reputation more that the few bucks they would make to get one over on you. It’s happened me at comic shops too and that’s it then, they lose me as a customer forever.
So jealous. Such a shame a place like this has to close down, but with the way they do business... it might not be that surprising. Comic shops need to price their stuff and not change their minds at checkout.
The gun that runs this place has long been an advisor for Overstreet. It's just business! That's how those guys have always viewed comic books. That's really shady he would change the price when you got to the register; I would most certainly just leave too. I
For years I felt like I missed out not going, I have been twice and I can say your not missing out much. Yes a lot of comics but the pricing is too chaotic for me to make it fun.
@@pop-comics the pricing did look a bit strange in your video - some boxes maked $1 and some not maked at all - how do you keep track of what box you picked from. THANKS for the vid and the commnets.
In this case all the dollar boxes are in the one Aisle, so I had grabbed 5 books that I knew would be $5-$10 and then the rest I just pulled comics and magazines out of the dollar bins.
Also to be frustrated when you are just going to resell them for over five dollars is silly. He took the time to curate a collection. He doesn’t price everything, his associates do. It just shows you have the reseller mindset instead of the passion mindset. We’ve see you spend thousands on a few books at con prices so to act like that in a true artisans shop is really disheartening
I was just buying stuff for myself, and decided I did not want to do the dance and haggle where they look everything up on ebay etc so I picked their dollar bin. I pointed out a bunch of the books that I pulled out of the dollar bin in the video and they insisted they were $5 when I went to pay. Its not about reselling, passion or anything. Its about changing the price on a whim because you feel like it. Maybe others are ok with that, I just wanted to point out my experience so others who go to shop know what to expect. If you are ok digging through a dollar bin and then being told they were actually $5 that is is cool with me. Just does not work for me.
That place is not even chaos it’s a void and worthless for me as a hunter. When you find something good and they charge what they want, you did their work for them. I would not waste my time. I don’t even think they have any gems in that huge place anymore, only drek. It’s the allure that gets people to go and always let down.
The knowing almost anything you buy that is worth buying is going to be looked up and most likely ebay listing prices is not appealing to me. If I want to pay full ebay prices I go to ebay and buy there. If I want to buy random appealing books by spending hours hunting at a place I want to find them for a good price.
I think the plan is to find a single buyer, but they want too much from what I heard. There are things of value there but not things that sell well at a high price so no one its gonna just buy the work it would take to make a profit on it.
Man I get being overwhelmed but you really did not do it right. Koch is so cool about a lot of stuff. I got super high grade keys there for next to nothing albeit I spent 3 hours there but he is a wealth of knowledge and you barely scratched the surface or asked questions 🤷🏿
last time I went He was there and prices were fair and I had a fun time and spent $500. I was not too overwhelmed and he answered my questions, gave me an idea of what things will costs etc. He was not there this time, that is probably the problem.
What is he going to do with all those books if he gets kicked from the building? He would need another warehouse to store all that and any warehouse is likely going to end up costing a whole lot more than rent is now.
Actually not sure, It does not feel like they are clearing much out so not sure if they are trying to sell everything or just dragging it as long as they can afford to. I think they want to find a single buyer or its going to end up being all tossed out
@@pop-comics Not the guy you want to deal with...I went there several times when Joe wasn't present, I pulled out a few horror magazines, and Pete basically said "Joe's gonna have to price these." I just split, but I've been there hundreds of times when Joe was in the office, and everything was cool! Also, it was never the best neighborhood to be walking around with a stack of comics under your arm.
Yeah the only other time I went was when Joe was there and it was pleasant, he answered my questions and I ended up spending $500. felt like night and day this time.
I decided to skip to the end, not because I wasn't excited to watch you dig... but because I could guess what was going to happen. That guy basically farms out his labor to anyone willing to dig, decides a high cost so you feel like you just worked for it and either buy it or pass, then puts everything good up on eBay when you pass. He's kinda scum.
They are gonna have to close very soon no matter what, I think they are just in denial a little. Should be blowing things out not nickel and diming. Either way the fun thing was hanging out with friends and I will do that any time I can.
Hey, I asked this on someone else's channel, but I never got a response. Are counterfeit books happening? I was always worried that people would start copying older books so they could sell them. Does this happen? Is it common?
I have seen many copied comics in my years so technically fake copies but they are fake looking so I think they are made just to have a cheap way to read expensive old books. I have not seen any that would confuse me yet.
When will you be staying in NYC? Well my area has Desert Island, my shop PopFuzz, Comic Station, Action City Comics and Hey Kids Comics. Those are all within a mile or two of each other. Also if you are here while the Queens Comic Party is going on, you can visit their show in this neighborhood too. They have 1-2 shows every month to check out (the other is in Queens). Gotham Thrift and the MIdtown Outlet have huge dollar bin sections. Midtown comics is fun to visit all three locations and they have expanded their dollar bin selection. Then there are a few spots to visit futher afield. Streetside Anthony also has sales almost weekly at his place so its good to follow him. Great deals there.
Wow I guess they are too lazy to price the books correctly and would rather come up with a price at the register. Not my kind of place to buy. I do have to say that place was interesting and I enjoyed the content even though the day didn’t pan out for you.
If this guy wanted to pay his rent, he should be letting people pay by the pound to help liquidate his stock. Otherwise it's just a dusty personal collection he's trying to make a few dollars on.
Yeah if it was me I would start with a fill a long box sale, maybe $1000 each the first few days so the most expensive stuff gets some of the money. Then drop to $500, $300, $1 each any book, $200 $100 etc until its all gone.
So you did some work sorting out good five dollar finds from the dollar bins for them? You at least deserve an hourly wage compensation after doing that sorting labor. 😅
Personally I would have paid the $60 for the books you wanted because they are worth more. If I had a store and you didn't want to buy after spending all that time looking I would be bothered. I look at things from both sides. You are a tough buyer at times
Its more the principle of it, I really don't like when places decide to charge more for books then what they have them priced etc. Yes the books are worth more, but I have access to so many more comics in the City that I rather just spend the cash elsewhere. I rather buy from shops and vendors that are pleasant to deal with. Nothing is priced in the warehouse and I don't like that, so I decided to just stick to the dollar bin so I did not have to worry about the price shock, negotiations later on when paying. But he still did it with me and that is something I kinda hate so I walked away from the purchase. As someone who does own a store I try my best to price everything in the shop so people know what to expect when paying. And even if there is a case where a price is lost etc, If I have to price something out I at least make sure its a pretty decent deal.
@pop-comics I understand. You are blessed and lucky to have access to so many places that have comics. At one time, I had 30,000 comics ranging from golden age to bronze age and had many key issues. But sadly i regret selling them all. But I've been rebuilding a collection again and have about 500 which are mostly silver age.
Looks like a structured landfill. You say it smells bad? And they overcharged you? Doesn't help that the place looks and feels like nightmare fuel. I know I'd pass.

@@pop-comics I re-watched this one but had to fukn see it to the end this time tho lol! They re-priced your sh!t at the end: That is nasty, that has become popular since the plandemic. I actually didnt mind the dust and all but that was only because Im not from there and the whole experience visiting was fun, but yeah, too bad it was a thumbs down for ya man....
Yeah the swicheroo thing was garbage, I hate stuff like that. Plenty of other vendors selling comics for good prices I can buy from.
Did they used to put ads for this place in Marvel comics like decades ago? It sounds familiar
I am pretty sure they did.
Nice to see some British stuff for a change. Wow, 2000ad, z cars etc, some of the 60's uk annuals are worth good money. Also the marvel Comics priced for the uk market, some collectors won't take them but they're the same books, the price is the only variation!
Oh yeah I love finding British stuff when I can. Its fun to collect for me.
Good on you for passing on those books.
Yeah I just was not feeling it after the upricing, I am happy to spend my money elsewhere.
I hate to see a comic book store go out of business but that "dynamic" pricing on comics once you bring them up to the counter is one of the many reasons some comic book stores are going out of business. The ole bait and switch is not a good business practice.
Yeah, switching prices at check out is a big no no for me.
I thought they went out of business years ago. I could have sworn I went to they’re going out of business sale 10-12 years ago 😂
This will be fun! 👍
Indeed!
They are still open? I thought they closed a few months ago.........
They are still kicking. Not 100% sure when they will be close.
Jimmy Hoffa, the Ring of Power and the Ark of the Covenant could all be hidden in this place and no one would ever be able to find them.
haha true lol
i watched a video of verygary and pressable defects dig thru that same place a few years ago. they didnt leave with much either and said the clerk pulled up ebay for the prices. personally i wish you'd of dug thru more non dollar boxes. i bet that place is full of gems.
Maybe I should lol, I was trying to avoid the end negotiations by only buying dollar books but that failed.
@@pop-comics those pence books were a nice find too. i thought you scored. bummer ending.
Went there many many years ago while visiting family in Brooklyn, guy changed prices to every book I grabbed and if I had multiple copies of a book he’s take them and say I couldn’t buy them, ended up not buying anything and never went back
Dang sounds like a bad experience similar to mine.
Question. What’s the best resource to find out values of comic books? Thanks!
LOved it when you pulled out a copy of WOW comics and you both went (*DRum Roll*) :WOW!!
Hehe
Good to walk away, better than regretting overpaying later. When I see unpriced comics at a convention, I pass them by, better than waiting for the guy to pull out the overstreet.
Yup always willing to walk away, there is plenty more comics out there.
Those boxes look ready to give up the ghost!!
That is for sure, they are all on their last legs.
Fun series❤
Happy you enjoyed the video.
We have an antiques flea market at the forks in Winnipeg Canada and Shaun they have cgc books and 90 S dc comics are $15.00 each. Cgc books priced very high.
Yikes!
Glad you saved your money 💰 Better deals at victory comics next month at NYCC.
Yeah, I always find sweet stuff from Victory for a good price. Its going to be a blast!
I have known them a long time love that place
That is cool.
Even though they are going out, ill never go back, the owner of the joint has always been shady..love his cats tho lol
Never met the cats but I have only been there a few times.
The place is a mess, but imagine going through all this to create a really cool store. 😊
There is a lot of clutter, but actually feels semi organized in the boxes etc.
@Pop Comics You look like you could be the actor Gary Oldman's brother.
I have heard that before many times :) I guess I do.
I like warehouses like that, it's a shame the buying experience was not good. Do you have like a top 3, top 5 NYC comic stores you recommend?
Places with a ton of comics are really fun to dig through and hunt.
@@pop-comics Nice! Thanks for the tip!
I was there years ago, and I had the very same experience…
Yeah I am hearing a lot of the same experience.
Looking forward to raking through the comics as ever sean, but where the hell do you start !!!,lol
Always fun digging through comics.
I've seen a bunch of UA-cam videos about this place and they all end in the same way, they get to the register and the guy starts jacking with the prices. Everybody ends up walking away.
Yeah seems to be a common theme. I was trying to avoid that myself by hitting the dollar bin, oh well. Plenty of more comics out there.
With that Much, inventory of not crap books, but just random little treasures here and there you think they would be practically giving them away. But Hey 2 each his own, there's plenty of paper out there for sale.
Yeah I am not really sure what they are doing, if they need to close soon then really should be clearing things out having real sales etc.
nice video
Thank you so much.
Also have used books red river books in the exchange district it’s the same look and feel as it’s beer around since 1974.
Are the prices better at that place?
I came up from Maryland week before last to look around, and they closed up right when I got there. Big bummer.
Oh dang, that is a bummer.
Road to 10k subs!!
I will be there soon!
Man that’s a lot to go threw you would need a solid week it seems to sift through all that
Heck yeah or even longer to really hunt every box.
OMG!!! I think I saw an I Lusipher #1 in the dollar boxes you were digging through. It was around the 45 minute mark and you passed it like it was garbage. It can go for about $3000 to most Poison Elves fans. In a God damned DOLLAR bin!
Dont know that book thanks for the knowledge.
What was the exact time stamp? Around 45 minutes I was looking for a book for Ian and those books were their Ebay listings I believe.
I'll look again when I get off work later.
Thanks I appreciate it, want to expand my knowledge whenever I can.
@@pop-comics 45:57
Appreciate your honesty on a negative experience. Check Very Gary Comics video on the same place, he echoed your experience four years ago.
Yeah I almost did not want to edit the video, but I think its better to share the experience so others know what to expect if they visit.
That comic warehouse doesn't know how to sell comics and they will continue to be stuck with them for a long time.
I think they landlord wants them out very soon, so they will be leaving the building one way or another.
I could be in there for weeks
It would take weeks to look at everything in there.
There has to be over 2 million items there and if they advertised $1 each blow out sale they would easily make a million before they have to move the rest to another location. 😅
I know or even start with a fill a long box for $1000 sale sell a dozen then $500 sale then $300 then everything $1 each then fiill a box $200, $100, $50 etc they could blow out so much
@@pop-comics even a better idea!
Glad you didn’t give them the sale. That’s a crooked way to do business and they should value their reputation more that the few bucks they would make to get one over on you. It’s happened me at comic shops too and that’s it then, they lose me as a customer forever.
Yeah the whole situation just made me not want to buy any comics, and that is pretty hard to do usually.
So jealous. Such a shame a place like this has to close down, but with the way they do business... it might not be that surprising. Comic shops need to price their stuff and not change their minds at checkout.
Yeah a bit of a bummer, hate seeing comic places go.
The gun that runs this place has long been an advisor for Overstreet. It's just business! That's how those guys have always viewed comic books.
That's really shady he would change the price when you got to the register; I would most certainly just leave too. I
It was not the owner that day but the other guy who is always there. Eitherway its shady to demand $5 a book for books out of their dollar bin.
Too much sympathetic dust (*ACHOO*!!)
Haha yes I felt really gross after the dig lol
Hello. I am blown away watching this. Tons of awesomeness.👍👍
There is so much there it would take months to look at it all.
Went there years ago, couldn’t find a single book I wanted 😅
Sounds about right, I saw tons I wanted but was not ready to wait as they looked everything up for pricing etc.
After this slog... you're due a banger of a score....!!
Oh I am sure I will find something soon, I am always on the hunt.
Gee shocking they are going out of business 😂
I think when rent was cheap it worked out fine, but that area of the city is getting hot so rents just skyrocketing.
still not 100% sure I should go and visit KOCH. ok. after seeing the whole vid. there is No need to go
For years I felt like I missed out not going, I have been twice and I can say your not missing out much.
Just wandering in a place like this is a treat all to itself. Glad you held your ground..
Yeah just being able to experience a place full of so many comics is pretty cool. Wish it was easier to buy from them.
Hopefully you didn't bring back any bed bugs with you. Question though why is this store a " treasure trove"?
I think your safe in that category.
What’s gonna happen to everything that doesn’t sale
The reviews are still consistent lmao. Prices are imaginary. :D
Sounds about right lol
Used to buy from Joseph and Peter back in the late 1970’s. Thanks for the Tour ❤
I love hearing history like that. You are very welcome I wanted to capture the warehouse before its gone.
ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS did a video @ Koch and pretty much came to same conclusion... not a happy experience for him either...!!
Yeah sounds like a lot of folks get the same experience.
Man those Death Rattles are definitely worth a buck. Cool series
Yeah super dope books!
I think they want to find a single buyer or its going to end up being all tossed out
My guess is you were dealing with Peter during checkout...
Yeah that is who checked me out.
There's like 3 or 4 times as much stuff that you looked at that's not even accessible... this was stressful to watch... I want to organize it all.
Yeah a bit, and nothing is priced and most of the time they price things kind of high so its hard to dig.
@@pop-comics Totally agree on the last part. I swear he's going to light it on fire though and try to collect insurance money.
Haha honestly I would not be shocked. I would not be surprised in the landlord get an eviction, and ends up just throwing it all out.
The owner wants to get buried with all that stuff.
Yeah I suspect he really does not want to close, otherwise things would be set up to blow out the inventory.
hey ill be there in the first week of october from california...
Lots of better spots to check out in NYC, but still would be an experience to visit at least.
Like what are some better stores in nyc ? I’ll be staying in Brooklyn, I went to the shop twice eakier this year in my last visit to nyc
Thank you soo much . Ill be in brooklyn in october 2-6 2024 its cool cos were im staying is within walking distance to pop fuzz
What do you think of silve age comics? Ive been there once or twice. I went ti kidtoen comixs in. Times square was severky disappionted.. how bout jhl
Why are they closing ... bummer
They lost their lease and the owner is getting old so I think it was just time to close down.
@@pop-comics Too bad , looks like a fun place to hunt for comics and toys.
👍🤘🖖
Wow I guess they are too lazy to price the books correctly and would rather come up with a price at the register. Not my kind of place to buy. I do have to say that place was interesting and I enjoyed the content even though the day didn’t pan out for you.
Yeah buying here is always super stressful to me, I like to know what I am getting into before I start grabbing heaps of things to buy.
Yeah kinda like that lol
✨⭐✨💞💖💞💞💖💞💖💞💖💞✨⭐✨
Does the place still stink of cat urine?
Yes, it was really hard to stay there for too long.
There are plenty of other cool comic spots to visit in the city. This one will be gone soon though, I am sure it had better days in the past.
You just worked for free.
Pretty much haha But I got a fun video out of it at least
what a mess, how does that place make money?
I think they just have a ton of stuff and then sell a little bit of it each month at very high prices to keep going. Otherwise I have no idea.
Cool warehouse but terrible operation lol they are still in 1993
Yeah it is fun to be around so many comics. But very hard to buy from them there.
