@@dancurrier6421 thanks man appreciate you checking the channel out. If it takes long to warm up you could have a faulty thermostat that is partially stuck open or opening too soon. Been watching your videos for several years now. Had to do this job on my sister car. Figured I'd do a little research on it. Low and behold, I find your video. Simple, fast and to the point, like always. Luv ya man, don't ever stop.
Thank you! My thermostat gasket was leaking like a sieve on my 2014 Buick Encore after a short road trip - had a big tear in it (how that happened, we don’t know). Found this video very helpful, and with a good deal of help from my boyfriend (he had the tools and the strength to loosen bolts and clamps) I got a new thermostat and gasket put on, and it’s all working perfectly now. There were a few differences between the cars (most notably a bloody steel line that was still in the way of one of the bolts), but we got it figured out. Wouldn’t have had the courage to try, but your video made it look at least doable. Saved me a chunk of money by not having to take it to the shop. I appreciate the time you took to do the video.
The reason that gasket was ruined in a short period of time is due to pressurized water and steam being pushed trough the leak, it acts like a knife that can slice rubber very easily. I’m glad you got it done.
Great video. Two things I would do different. One, I would not splash the motor with water just after the job because if there are any leaks, after the job, you won't know it is leaking because everything is wet. Leave the cleaning for much later once you are happy there are no leaks. Two, first loosen all three bolts and then it would be easier to remove that clamp with some pliers.
My mom’s Chevy Sonic needs a new thermostat, but I’m not paying $500 dollars to have it done. And this is the first video I found that explains the pinch snap that I was worried about breaking. Thanks man! I found a Venmo for you, but it hasn’t had any activity since 2020. Send me some info so I can make a contribution.
He is correct... you will be replacing these items. The water pump, the thermo, and the outlet housing on the drivers side. The coolant reservoir (they crack). Heater hoses, and all the water hoses for that matter, are actually pretty good quality, so that part is rare. I would recommend using your favorite auto parts store brand for replacements. If you have a floor jack and a good set of inverse torx, it is easy as pie to do all these jobs.
Nice video! I highly recommend the aluminum replacement over the plastic. For anyone watching, my advice is, you might as well go ahead and replace the serpentine belt while you're at it. Why? Well, if your thermostat has failed, your serpentine belt is getting old, too. Also, getting the motor mount and belt out of the way makes it a lot easier to get to all the hoses and bolts of the thermostat assembly. Serpentine belt is less than $20.00. Also, if you are replacing the serpentine belt, definitely go ahead and replace the thermostat while you're at it. Way easier and faster to do both at once instead of one at a time, and again, they age at about the same rate, anyway.
It might be worth mentioning at the beginning that different Chevy Cruze engines will have different placement and configurations of the thermostat and housing, My wife's 2012 Cruze has it on the right side of the engine next to the battery!
More than once I have had to put the car up on ramps in order to get all of the air out of the system. Sometimes you need to make sure that your coolant reservoir tank or radiator cap are the highest point in the system in order for all of the air to bleed up to the top. Sometimes just running the engine at a high rpm doesn’t work. Just a tip for those who may do this procedure and still not get any heat out of the heating ducts.
Your channel is a god-send bro. Thank you so much for the information. Gonna be doing a thermostat housing and hose replacement tomorrow morning. Liked, commented & subscribed. Im in!
Well done vid. Might as well change the surge tank and the hose to the outlet as well as the outlet at the same time. All kinds of cooling problems on this engine, but the outlet is the most common failure.
My understanding after much research is that the sensor in the housing isn't a sensor at all but a heating element that is controlled by the computer. Any time the engine is under heavy load the computer turns element on to aid in opening the thermostat earlier to allow for more cooling. The continuous operation of the element if the car sees hard driving contributes to both early failure of the thermostat itself and or leaking of seal or cracking of plastic housing. Additionally if the unit fails or burns out the temp Guage will show cold constantly while the fans may run continuously on high with dash warning tells you engine is hot (even when not) and AC is shut down. Driving with a system leak without immediate repair and continuously adding coolant can also lead to early failure of the element requiring thermostat and housing replacement since it comes as a unit only.
Put in a brand new thermostat and housing and my check engine light is still on and cooling system fan is running constantly. Even though bad thermostat came up on the scan, brand new thermostat didn't fix the problem??? How does this make sense? *Edit* Just had to unplug the battery to reset the computer and light went off
I have the trifecta advantage tune on mine, turns the boost upto a little over 20 Psi max, a nice jump in power plus it comes with some cooling systems recalibration which turns the fans on low at 195 and full at 220, I basically never see more than 209F now where before it would hover between 222-229F all the time, hoping that helps with some of the plastic fatigue on the cooling system parts too.
Thank you very much you really cut that down and didn't sit there in profile like every 5 seconds and Hawking some product Love the video short and sweet thank you very much
Thank you your video has one thing that the other is that you show the remove one screw and you can drain the radiator without having to remove the bottom hose because I am at that point and I can't get the bottom hose off so now I know what going to do.
I took my car to the mechanic last year and this is what was wrong with it. Cost me almost 400$. I’ll do it this time. I do have a question though. Is it okay if you drive it while the thermostat is broke? Or will it mess up the car even more. Thanks for the video you’re a lifesaver!
I personally would love to sell back to GM Chevrolet their cheap ass P.O.S. Cruze and have them give me ? A good built car with less upkeep on it. But we all know ? That will never happen. So I would hope we can take them to court. Another bad deal in the Cruze is vacuum leaks and turbo issues on the 1.4 liter POS
Just found out mine was leaking from this housing. I found a metal one I ordered and going to replace it with it. I don’t like all of this hot coolant going through all these plastic components
Nice video!! GM SHOULD be forced to recall & upgrade the 1.4L Turbo PCV check valve system...and the crappy plastic coolant elbow on the Dr side of Engine block! WHY does GM always cheap-out on the little things, and in this case, wreck what is fundamentally a decent engine!??!
The lower smaller hose, my hose clamp slid all the way down to where I can't reach it. Think I can just buy a new clamp or do I need to find a way to fetch it?
Another leak point on these engines is the coolant reservoir itself. Where the larger of the two hoses connects, the GM reservoirs are notorious for the plastic “ pipe “ that the hose connects to cracking. Is this case a Dorman reservoir has a metal sleeve over that plastic “;stem pipe “ that should strengthen it.

Doesn’t petroleum degrade rubber gaskets over time? Seems like your dielectric grease would be a better choice for gaskets and such rather than oil or grease. Also the torque on those bolts is just a touch under 6 lb ft but I set it for 6 and no leaks. Thanks for the video.
Correct, petrolatum degrades rubber. But he's prob right that those gaskets are nitrile and not rubber. Better just to be in the habit of using silicone grease anyway on packings.

Thank You for the video! The hose with the clip that connects to the thermostat now has a small leak.. does this hose go bad over time? Maybe the O ring in there? Any tips would be appreciated thanks. 5:35
Yes there is an O-ring inside. It may have got a little tear on it. You should be able to replace it. Might be hard finding one the right size though. Or take it back off and check it for Tears. If it looks okay, coat it with grease and put it back together
There are so many design flaws, first of all, inside the thermostat you can see the spring is hold with pre-tension by thin plastic housing bit 4:00, this plastic bit will always break whenever you tear down the thermostat; second, the gasket always fails at some mileage and causing coolant leakage.
Yes it comes with the gasket. Or you could just replace only the gasket more than likely. But for how cheap the entire part is might as well replace it
Ok so mine has this big spring that was up inside the aluminum housing when I took mine apart and did not have a spring on the thermostat side. The new one did not come with the big spring but does have one on the thermostat. So do I need to put in the big spring on leave it out?
It's hard to give you a reliable answer without actually seeing it. But I assume the Big Spring you're talkin about was the thermostats spring. So no you do not need that
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow awesome I think the new part was redesigned and I kind of came up with that assumption and I tried it and it's working fine so thank you
Do u HAVE TO drain the coolent first to replace the thermostat ?? Can I replace the thermostat without drain the coolent from underneath the vehicle. Please let me know so I can start the process. Thanks in advance
Yes you can. Just make sure to put a pin underneath to catch the coolant that's going to come out when you take the housing off. And also make sure the engine is cold and system is depressurized
I pulled the sensor out ..the first clip.and there r wires hanging out of it..on urs their was no wires...my thermostat is zero..it just went out on the road
Does this car have an electronically controlled thermostat? It's kinda hard to find info about it online but I came across one forum post saying it's electronically controlled with a grid controlled electronic wax pellet type. It is a post on Cruze Talk called Electronic control of thermostat temperature 1.4T and I would post a link except UA-cam nukes all comments with links.
Can you replace just the thermostat?? Do you have to replace the housing or can you put a new thermostat in the existing housing after you remove it? I locked my keys in the car with it running haven't had any problems with it until that point now the radiator fan runs constantly and the gauge does not ever come off of cold obviously I burned out the thermostat. But do I have to replace the whole thing or can I just remove the housing replace the thermostat and then re-install the entire unit??
It’s crazy these cars have cooling problems like this especially it having a turbo. But I guess that’s what happens. I don’t know about dumping water on that though… that won’t damage the belt or anything?
hey, my dads cruze 1.6 lt is throwing up a code 89. some say its a service oil light and some say it is a thermostat. do you know if this is correct. Im in the Uk by the way.
Yes. But the best way is to put it in a pot of water and slowly heat it up with a thermometer inside so you can tell at what point the thermostat opens

Hey man, great video! I have a question if you can answer... about a month back i made the mistake of mixing regular coolant and dexcool coolant in my chevy cruze. Then fast forward to this month, I started smelling burning coolant, then one day i got the engine overheated warning, i immediately stopped the car, and found the coolant completely gone... filled coolant up, and took it directly to the mechanic. He basically said the thermostat is stuck and needs to be replaced... along with a coolant flush. Does this sound like the right diagnosis? Someone else said the water pump could be leaking. Anyway just wanted to get your two cents :)

Great video, thanks for posting it. 💪🏻
Thanks bud and no problem
Does this work for the 1.8L Chevy Cruze LS 2014?
Great job, very clear, Thanks NoNonsenseKnowHow, Kudos!
Thanks Carlos I appreciate the feedback
This is a guy I would let work on my car 🙌🏻 you can tell he is skilled and cares
Is this housing available in aluminum? I know the coolant distribution housing on the other side of the engine is.
Mines stuck closed, thanks for the video
There are so many design flaws, first of all, inside the thermostat you can see the spring is hold with pre-tension by thin plastic housing bit 4:00, this plastic bit will always break whenever you tear down the thermostat; second, the gasket always fails at some mileage and causing coolant leakage.
My chevy cruze 2012 doesn't heat only on passenger side. Do you think I can fix this problem same as you and change termostat?
Mine is leaking where the housing meets the water pump, is there a new gasket in the set?
Yes it comes with the gasket. Or you could just replace only the gasket more than likely. But for how cheap the entire part is might as well replace it
Does anyone know where can we buy these parts from other than plastic?
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow thanks a million brother. Bless you.
Happy Ramadan to you and your family 👪 ❤
What’s the sensor on the top of the housing you disconnected?
I've seen some aluminum housings, would you recommend it for a 2012 chevy cruze 1.4l turbo
Is the procedure same for the 2012 LS model
Sweet nice clean work!!!
Thanks man! Elementary job but I'm sure it will end up helping out a few DIYers!
I pulled the sensor out ..the first clip.and there r wires hanging out of it..on urs their was no wires...my thermostat is zero..it just went out on the road
What is the sensor at the thermostat housing? What does that control? I have a Chevy Sonic and am troubleshooting a radiator fan not running issue.
Thx for the video bro ,it helped me alot
Does this car have an electronically controlled thermostat? It's kinda hard to find info about it online but I came across one forum post saying it's electronically controlled with a grid controlled electronic wax pellet type.
It is a post on Cruze Talk called Electronic control of thermostat temperature 1.4T and I would post a link except UA-cam nukes all comments with links.
But no product listings mention electronic control, which is surely a feature they'd mention if it was present right?
What a damn good video..
Thanks for posting
Hey man, you know if these motors are the same that are in say a Buick Encore 2013? I appreciate it!
If you have the 1.4L then yes
GM does have a recall on the water pump, but make sure to see them before 150k
Does it cover a rebuilt car....
How do we contact them?
@@petramarquez4513 you will have to go to your local GM/Chevy dealer or find their contact info online
@@Pete391 I doubt it since warranties generally do not cover replaced parts
@@beccaslemons thank you
Can you replace just the thermostat?? Do you have to replace the housing or can you put a new thermostat in the existing housing after you remove it? I locked my keys in the car with it running haven't had any problems with it until that point now the radiator fan runs constantly and the gauge does not ever come off of cold obviously I burned out the thermostat. But do I have to replace the whole thing or can I just remove the housing replace the thermostat and then re-install the entire unit??
No. Replace the Whole unit...its a newer, better version on Amazon $49.
Do you put the coolant cap back on after filling the coolant or do you let the car rev with the cap off
Let the car run with the cap off to allow the air bubbles to escape
It’s crazy these cars have cooling problems like this especially it having a turbo. But I guess that’s what happens. I don’t know about dumping water on that though… that won’t damage the belt or anything?
Does this line have to be flushed with water?
Thanks. That helped out a lot
Did you leave the reservoir cap off when bleeding?
exactly what i needed thank you
No prob
hey, my dads cruze 1.6 lt is throwing up a code 89. some say its a service oil light and some say it is a thermostat. do you know if this is correct. Im in the Uk by the way.
Do you drain the coolant before replacing the thermostat????
Can u pour hot water on the thermostat to tell if its failing or any way of check whist the thermostat is out to see if working right?
Yes. But the best way is to put it in a pot of water and slowly heat it up with a thermometer inside so you can tell at what point the thermostat opens
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow i was not sure as some say its electric and cant tell that way but im not sure and was trting to work out if mine is stuffed on a holden trax 2018 it dont open in hot water
@@Lifesagrindcoffee is your car overheating? Yeah it could possibly be stuck, but that is fairly uncommon from my experience. In either case you would have to remove it to test it of course
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow yes initially i had collent leak in the water pump so i replaced with a new one now coolent boils after few mins running right side is cool where left side pipes are hot waiting on new thermostat atm
Down fall for Australians holden went into recession and has been abit of a problem
Wow excelente video very well explained thanks
Another great video!
Thanks!
Get that orange coolant out of the GM vehicles if you have one!! That crap makes everything brittle! Get the green universal coolant in there!!
when i put the hose back on the thermostat it leaks not a lot but still leaks. i put the grease on the o ring like you showed push the hose back it clicks like you showed but i cant get it to stop leaking. any ideas what i might be doing wrong
It sounds like the O-ring may be torn. I would take it back off and inspect. Let me know what you find out. Thanks
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow can the o-ring be replaced? I was thinking I might have to replace the hose on account of that o-ring
@@ThePapertank1 yeah a lot of time you have to replace the whole line. Trying to find the proper o-ring might be an issue. But if it was me I would try to find one that fits first
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow was able to replace o rings that I got from oreilys that worked I had to order them
My car was overheating so I changed the thermostat and was still overheating then I changed the coolant temperature sensor and is still overheating what else should I change? Car keeps shooting coolant into the coolant Reservoir then it after that fills up it goes onto the ground.any idea's?
After you burp it... do you put the cap back on while the car is running or do you stop the car shut it off and then put the cap on?
Doesn't make any difference.
At one point the heat was also weak
Good thanks for your effort and information
No problem!
Yup that lower hose on the bottom of the thermostat I couldn’t get that clamp off and cracked the coolant hose 🤦♂️
Damn
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow you know the name of that hose? I ain’t going to be able to change it all that other stuff is in front of it I can’t even remember know what was in front of that hose I would have to take all off.
@@TaylorOriginal352 Sorry no i dont know the specific name offhand
