Today's Tiny Teardown, a 1.4L Turbocharged 4 cylinder from a Chevrolet Cruze. This LUV/LUJ Engine is found in the Cruze and the Sonic, and is notoriously unreliable. In this video, I tear this overheated engine completely down to find out how bad it really is.
This engine was supplied by Premier Automotive in East Alton, IL!
My name is Eric and I own and run a full service auto salvage business called Importapart located in the Saint Louis MO area. Part of our model is dismantling and selling parts from rare and niche market engines. I don't build or rebuild engines, we simply supply hard parts to those that do!
Want to see a particular engine torn down? I may have already done one! No really, check out my other videos for the engine you'd like to see! I've made over 70 other teardowns from a Cummins to an LS7, and from Rotary to Ram Ecodiesels. You can expect a new teardown every week!
Check them out here • Blown Up Engine Tear D...
As always I appreciate all of the comments, feedback and even the criticism.
What will I tear apart next week? Just wait and see!

Absolutely love how the oil feed line wraps around the header before hitting the turbo, to insure the line overheats the oil and clogs.

Probably done to heat the engine oil rapidly from cold because people jump in and go without warning up the engine and the engineers want things lubricated so they don't die early.

@Yeah Right As a matter of fact I used to clean my engines out by draining half the oil, adding 2 pints paraffin-kerosine and 2 pints water then driving 30 miles around town.
Took out all the crap and left everything sparkling.
You obviously didn't hear of the Ford no-oil driving test where the two cars ran 70 miles without oil.

I owned a 2014 Cruze, 2016 Malibu, and currently have a 2021 Trailblazer. I commute 50 miles to work, which turns to about 2500 miles a month with non-work related driving. About 95% of my driving is freeways. I change my oil at 7500 miles at the dealership, and get my 30k, 60k, etc heavy maintenance done religiously. I have had absolutely no performance issues with these vehicles. If my driving was more in-town, then I would change the oil at 3-5k, but because it's freeway driving, I extend it more. It's more about being cognizant of the type of driving you do, and keeping up on the maintenance to keep your vehicle in tip top shape. This can be said for pretty much every vehicle on the road, regardless of manufacturer or model. Great video, I love to see tear-downs of all scenarios. :)

My 1.4L Cruze was relatively trouble free over 178k miles of use. Plastic cooling system parts were the biggest headache for me. I was good about oil changes and used full synthetic. Never had turbo issues. The PCV system was a weak link but there was an upgrade kit available that eliminated that issue.

Just recently had my first major issue after 160k miles, needing a tow. One of the rubber coolant pipes burst while I was on the highway and sprayed coolant all over the engine bay and led to the engine overheating. Luckily it was a cheap fix and they had the part in stock at my local auto part dealer. It's been running great since.

Having worked at a Chevy dealership, these engines and the 1.5 in the Malibu were our bread and butter. Cracked pistons, cracked turbos, failing water pumps, leaking oil coolers and so much more. It was almost a rush to greet the customer when a Cruze showed up. Repairs were good money when it was under warranty as well, techs were able to make loads of time on the warranty repairs, and when the customer had an extended warranty, it was even better. Though it always made me sad when someone rolled up with one and it wasn't under some kind of warranty, those were the customers that I really felt for since I know I wouldn't want to sink in 1-7k into a Cruze.

Simpler way is to drain the sump then run engine a couple of minutes without oil to pump it all out of the system.
It won't hurt and engine to idle a couple of minutes without oil.
Ford once did a test on two oils. Filled and ran the cars round a track at good speed. Drained the sumps completely then sent the cars out again. They both drove many miles until the one on the supposedly inferior oil seized up while the other kept on going until it was so sick it had to be shot.
The oil companies have brainwashed drivers to believe masses oil oil is essential but in fact just remember all those old loco engineers who had to squirt a few drops of oil into the oiler of the crank pins and con rods before sending the beasts out to do some real work?
Same goes for all those old drive pulleys and machines in old machine shops.

5k Miles oil and Filter changes should be standard on any small turbocharged engine.
Especially with the high fuel dilution from direct injection and questionable piston ring designs.
Turbodiesels can probably handle longer intervals since they are lower RPM engines with less stress on the components usually.

Very interesting video. I have a 2012 Sonic with 170K miles with this engine. I have had fairly good luck with this engine. It still runs well getting 40+ mpg on the hwy. There have been problems, but none of the serious ones you described here. For these engines to survive you must maintain them: changing the oil often and NEVER letting the cooling get low overheating the engine. I changed all the cooling hoses and parts after 80K miles/5 years and will do them again soon to ensure that the cooling system never fails. A few other comments:
    1) The oil filter housing actually is quite good and easy to work on but does not "..puke[s] oil right down the front of the engine." In my view it is not too close to the exhaust to cause problems.
    2) Sticking coil boots are a problem. Unless you were very careful and patient, you could almost never get the boots out whole. Originally, you could not buy the boots separately and you had to buy the entire coil pack ($100+) just to replace a $2 boot for a plug change. Now the boots alone are available aftermarket, As you would say: "ask me how i know."
    3) From what I have heard, the oil system in the engine is pretty good. It seems that the cooling system is the real problem in that many problems are caused by overheating.
    4) I am not sure it is ever worthwhile rebuilding these engines. It is pretty easy just to replace the whole engine so rebuilding just isn't a value proposition.

My sister had a 13 sonic and I had a 14 Cruze. I wound up working with ZZP performance just up the road here and doing some stuff to mine just to make my little econobox a little less boring. It was dialed up to 173whp on e85 with a flex fuel sensor added on to pull the boost down at 50% or less ethanol. I wouldn't call it fast but it most certainly was fun! With a new intake manifold eliminating the PCV failure spot, I had absolutely zero issues even running 21psi of boost with one of those Vermont Tuning enlarged turbos.

Engines aren't supposed to burn or use coolant. In 2013 I test drove a Cruz turbo, the Dodge Dart turbo, and the focus. The Cruz by far was the worst, no power and I hated the ergonomics. Space in the trunk was crap. The focus was OK, still a semi small trunk and tight in the back seats, power was OK but of course not turbo. It still seemed to have better power than the Cruz. The Dart was amazing. Plenty of power, handled like it was on rails, tons of room in the car and in the trunk. Amazing car, I traded my dart in 3 years ago on something else but I really liked that car. It had just hit 100k, was going to need timing belt, brakes, and tires and I didn't want to put all that into it.
About 5 years ago I was at my buddies shop just shooting the bull and he had a cruz in there. Oil pan gasket was leaking, valve cover gasket was leaking, he said it had like 80k miles. He said they were absolute garbage, I told him about my test drive experience and he wasn't surprised.

Thanks for doing this one. A very thoughtful approach. As for your comment on air blockage at the front being a possible cause, that would be high on my list of suspects. I think some of these Cruz models had a feature that used some kind of movable vanes behind the grill to block air flow through to the radiator at highway speeds. The thinking was, I guess, that enough air would still pass through the radiator but from under the car. An aerodynamic advantage would then be gained as a result, at highway speeds, from air moving up over the hood in a more laminar flow. Then, at lower speeds, these vanes would rotate open again, parallel to air flow coming in, and more air would pass directly through the radiator.

My sister loved my car and bought one the same year. We have been extremely happy with our cars. My sister had to replace her turbo last year and is now faced with the oil cooler failure. One of the best investments you can make on these little guys is a good turbo blanket. I got one from PTP for my Malibu which has the same problems, cost like $150 and its kept my turbo going for 150k now. Took all of 10 minutes to install.
Keeping the turbo from heat cycling so fast especially on short trips vastly reduces the rate that the wastegate housing will crack and in turn keeps the coolant and oil inside the turbo where it belongs. Basically, the itty bitty turbo is the achilles heel of this engine, the more stable it is the better.

Thanks for the video, I really enjoy your content and the humor you throw in there😊. My wife had a 2012 sonic that she bought new. She was so excited to get it because it had the 6speed manual transmission and I was excited because of the turbo and the fuel economy it was rated to get. She had really good luck with it and we traded it in at 98000 miles. Always had the dealer change the oil since she was given life time oil changes with purchase of car. Only things that were done and covered under warranty was the valve cover replacement which was done at least 2 times lol. I believe they changed the oil filter housing as well. The fuel economy was amazing, but I wasn't impressed by the power at all, it seemed like they had the car tuned really lean which would make since why fuel economy was so good I guess lol. We traded it in on a 2018 equinox with the turbo 1.5 and it was a night and day difference in power. I would be interested in seeing a tear down on the 1.5 if you get the opportunity, thanks😊.

This engine had known water pump issues where they extended the water pump warranty to 150k miles. I found this out when I was having some early symptoms of overheating, found a leaking water pump, and looked for a replacement. Once I found out I just called a local dealer and they replaced it for free at 110k miles. I replaced the remainder of the hoses and heater core fittings and the reservoir and have been trouble free still at 140k miles.

I've recently rebuilt one of these engines. Unfortunately, all the smaller GM engines have a similar problem in my experience: leaking timing case gaskets (although this one was the last shop's fault). The gasket starts leaking, water gets in the oil, and it overheats. Then usually the head (and in this case even the block) warps.
And for some reason I have never seen any of these engines without piston skirt wear. If you can see the wear, it's usually already out of spec.
But other than that, it's a decent little engine. A lot better than the 1l 3cyl ecotec

I used to work at a GM dealership in the 90's. The 3.1 V6's had a recall where we would replace the pistons with new units that had coated skirts to help eliminate cold start piston knock. It always surprised me how engines with 60k, 70k, even 80k or more miles would have pristine rod bearings. We didn't replace them, only swapped the old pistons out and reassembled with new gaskets, new oil and filter and antifreeze and they were out the door. And it did quiet them down.

I have rebuilt quite a few.
The problems come from the drivers, not the engines.
Most of these cars have a temp warning light and no gauge.
The light comes on (usually due to a failed water pump) and people ignore it and run them till they stop.

No warning lights, but the water pump was leaking. Replaced it, and then had to have it replaced again. Then had to replace the turbo. and then had to replace the turbo again. Supposedly, despite regular maintenance, and taking care of the car, we weren't sitting in it long enough after we parked. The car was terrible.

I've seen a ton of these engines come through a couple shops I've worked at in Texas. Primarily, they have overheated or developed coolant/oil leaks from the very filter housing you pointed out. Surprise surprise, putting a rubber gasket on a cooler/warmer block and then shoving it into the head behind the exhaust manifold means it fails prematurely. Similar to the 3.6L Pentastar from Chrysler, all that heat soaking is just too much for those seals. I've also seen a lot of these engines work just fine with proper maintenance, but the design is still questionable. Love the small engines, and there are a ton of interesting small engine designs out there! Keep finding them!

Watching you take this thing apart was hilarious, you detached the cam gears from the head rather than ripping apart all the timing cover first which is exactly how GM says you're supposed to do it. They have you leave all that stuff in place and just pin the tensioner before you remove the head, its actually a pretty good design. That's why the timing cover gasket has a perforation where the head meets the block, so when you do a head job you can replace just the upper half of that gasket and silicone the corner.

Have one in a Buick Encore. Had to replace the valve cover twice (the EGR is built into it and you have to replace the whole thing). The intake manifold had to be replaced because the check valve for the exhaust gas gives up after about 100k miles - it is plastic, as is the water inlet and outlet with the thermostat housing. Had to replace these as well because the broke from the heat (plastic? Who’d have thought). The problem with the exhaust gas blow by eventually kills the catalytic converter which failed at about 150k miles. The replacement converter is not warrantable for this engine because of the problem with the exhaust gas circuit. You can tell when you have a problem with the EGR because it smells like a hamburger is cooking on top of the engine. Will never have another one, but my wife picked it out.
