The .45-70 Springfield trap door carbine is my favorite firearm of all time. I love it when Mr. Hickok shoots the steel targets with the muzzle loaders and antique black powder cartridge guns and early smokeless powder cartridge guns like the bolt action Mausers and Mosin Nagants and .30-40 Krag and 1903 Springfield and .303 Enfield rifles
As a soldier from 1864 I can tell you the Improvement was immense. For instance, I never had to worry about my lieutenant yelling at me for losing my Ramming Rod.. *Again.*
We own four flintlock smoke poles and then I bought an 1873 Trapdoor, and my flintlocks are now collecting dust. I just love shooting my old Springfield Infantry Rifle that much. The old boy is going out deer hunting with me starting this coming season. My modern rifles are starting to get a little dusty as well. Only our revolvers are still getting plenty of use at the indoor range. My Sweetie Pie still shoots her flintlock and her .243 and her revolvers. I bought her and I 12-gauge single shot shotguns and we haven't fired a shot through either of them yet. It's time to get back to enjoying the shooting sports again. We both retired and spent a ton of time refurbishing the house and property and now with all that behind us we can concentrate on being retired and having fun.
Keep a single shot rather than go to lever action. Army brass and politicians screwing over the service man from 1865 to 2022. Love your videos, the firearms, the history lessons and the excellent display of marksmanship. God bless you sir and hope to see your videos for a long time.
In 1959 I bought a trap door for $20 ! I love the way it handles and shoots. The 45-70 cartridge is unique and impressive. The rifle is in my office - from time to time I get it out to just look at it.
Saw a whole row of the Trapdoor rifles at a gun store just down the road, gonna have to pick one up someday since I have an ever-lasting love for those gorgeous rifles.

Great video, loved the historical info. Was fascinated to hear the copper cartridge vs brass and that it may have been one of the reasons why the 7th Cavalry met its demise at little big horn.
They lost because of using inferior firearms to what the Natives were using, and the Natives both outnumbered and outmaneuvered them badly above all. Custer and his officers lacked intel on their enemies, too. The battle, and attempted retreat, was botched hard.
Springfield Trapdoor 1873 was my very first rifle ($30). As a skinny teenager, I really had to lean into it to keep my footing against the recoil. The 50-70 Trapdoor proved the concept in combat at the Battle of the Wagon Box when a wood collecting party was hit by a much larger body of “hostiles” who were used to riding down soldiers after their first volley caused them to reload their muzzleloaders. The faster reloading Trapdoors were new to the “hostiles” and broke up their mounted charges with many casualties until they “retired from the field” to reconsider their tactics.
@BradynLee $30 actual in 1958, “fresh” from Bannerman’s whose warehouse was on an island in NY harbor near Liberty Island. Original surplus US Govt black powder ammo was available (later brass cases, not the early folded and rolled copper cases) at about $2.00 per 20-round box. I know, I should have bought 10 of the rifles at the time, but my total take home pay at the time was less than $200/month.
I really like the carbine. I had a full length at one point, and it was unwieldy. Kind of like the difference between the 91/30 Nagant vs an M38 or M44.
Hunting antelope in south Wyoming, I looked down and saw three cartridge cases in a bunch and one more off a couple inches. This was on top of a small rise on high ground with good view of prairie all around. I sent a picture to the Wyoming university and was told that they were what Hickock has there, and was most likely from a provision hunter for the railroad shooting prairie game to feed the workers. I don't know if the railroad guys would willingly eat gnarly antelope meat or he was shooting buffalo. Oddest thing was the internal primer. They were copper casing.
The Trapdoor inspired me to design the "Thunder Strom 1578" rifle in Armonic Bellum, was a Humungus skip considering the base model was the equivalent of the flinklock "Bess"...
The conversion of the Springfield from percussion to cartridge was clever and significant. The 1873 models were not conversions, but new built. As far as Little Big Horn, the Indians did use some lever actions, as the speed was more close to what they were used to with bows. The US Calvary dismounted, as you could not shoot a heavy rifle from horseback.
Thank you for video. I have a Springfield 1884 trapdoor with a bayonet on it. We tried using it for a duck gun with a 410 shell, the pattern was so wide they could fly through it and honk at us.
Mornin,Sir. I traded for a Trapdoor Springfield with a Bayonet and a spade attachment that mounted to the bayonet lug, when I was 11 or 12 years old. It was longer than I was tall at the time, but I managed to shoot it. Needless to say it got traded off later on. It wasn't quite as nice as yours, but I still would like to have it back
I have read that the trapdoor Springfield was also used by regiments of the militia in the Spanish-American War. Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders were the only volunteer regiment to use Krag-Jorgensens. I guess that's the kind of advantage you get when you're led by the former Secretary of the Navy

But we were still using single shot trapdoors through the 1880s when other nations had adopted magazine rifles such as the kropatschek, mauser 1871/84, vetterli-vitali 1870/87, beaumont-vitali 1871/88, jarmann 1884, murata type 22, (most these were single shots adapted to magazine rifles) and even more advanced arms like the lebel 1886, gewehr 1888, schmidt-rubin 1889, mauser 1889, and lee-metford. Soon after we adopted the krag but by that point, it was outclassed by the mauser and mannlicher systems. We were behind the bell curve. This was an era of rapidly advancing small arms technology, and things were becoming obsolete fast. Ya'll know the story, the curmudgeon us military officers thought repeaters were a waste of ammo. Although there was an early repeater adopted by the us, the winchester hotchkiss, but it was withdrawn after the trapdoor was deemed superior.
Do you have any knowledge of the formulation used in the steel in these vintage firearms? And were different steels used for different parts of the rifle? Thanks much!

I love them old black powder, big bore breech loaders. My 1884 Model 45-70 Springfield Trapdoor and my Nepalese-made .577 Snider are so much fun to shoot. Even though the 45-70 cartridges are still available and you pretty much have to make your own .577 Snider cartridges both are fun to re-load and don't cost that much if you do it yourself. But, in all seriousness, those neighbors of yours in nearby Kentucky are in trouble. How or what do you recommend that WE, your subscribers, can do to help out those Kentuckians who have been affected by the massive flooding that has occurred over the past few days? Lots of folks have lost everything, including loved ones. Asking because you know we have your back, and even small donations of money or resources from some of your 6.9 million subscribers can make a HUGE difference. What can we do?
I had a trapdoor built by H & R back in the 70s in 45/70,quite fast action with a little practice,but the stock shape is not user friendly, well nose friendly. 🙃
I have a Springfield carbine. Family story is it s from a great great uncle. Nobody left to ask. Must find a qualified gun smith. Never considered it may be operational. Love to restore…… and fire . 💃🏽

I believe the army only started marksmanship practice in the 1870's. May be wrong.
Perhaps cartridges if used extensively in the American civil war may have had an even larger casualty rate that what it actually had experienced😢
