Straight edger (Milwaukee M18, with a head that changes from edger to string trimmer) for the driveway and sidewalks. For the flower beds (concrete with lots of curves) I use the string trimmer held upright. The Milwaukee is light enough that it's easy. Still haven't gotten good, though, as my circles around my trees, but I'm getting there. Thanks for another great video, J.B.
I would tend to go with a traditional edger over this tool. WAY better at both power and accuracy. The only advantage I can see is on internal edges where you can't ride on concrete... but those edges are rarely straight anyway and are thus better off to be done with a string trimmer that is better at following curves. I see this more as a power-head tool where it saves me from having another motor to maintain/take up space at the sacrifice of quality. Maybe i'm missing something? I'm told it might have happened once. I do the exact same protocol of starting the 2 cycle then finding my PPE etc while it warms up. ALWAYS let 2-cycles warm up and they'll not betray you.
At 6'8" I have to bend down a bit no matter what tool I use. That being said, my Stihl string trimmer came with a shoulder belt I can attach to the trimmer to make it easier to handle and neraly be able to stand straight up and use. I can operate the trimmer one handed while wearing the belt which also makes walking forward a lot easier. You might check and see if Echo makes a similar shoulder belt. If not, get one from Stihl and connect it to your Echo. Just a thought.
Edger? I don't even know her! OH! 🤣 2:14: "I can't even flex this thing. This thing's pretty stiff." That's what she said! Thanks for helping to bring out the classics this week, JB! AND... I've used both a string trimmer and an edger to do my lawn edging. It depends on the situation. Usually, an edger is better suited for the first edging of the season or after long intervals. String trimmer is good enough for lighter edging jobs.
lol after I published the video to UA-cam I realized I should have put something there lol. How did I miss that? Ariens mower review coming out in two weeks. If you got any zingers let me know! I would agree with you on how you use your edger. First cut clears a path. String trimmer for maintenance. Win in my book. 👍
Gave up trying to edge with string trimmer. I have the same echo trimmer a few years removed. Works great. For major over growth need something stronger. It’s awkward but pulling backwards does help cut through thicker stuff.
Yeh, nothing finishes off a cut like doing the edges with a stick edger. When you came down the curb and turned around and said “that made short work of that”. It is so true!!!
The garage geezer lol. JB, have you ever used the Black and Decker Edge Hog corded edger? Seems to be abundant on Facebook market place for the price of a 6 pack. I bought a new one that did my initial edging very slowly with me needing to clear out the clay every foot and the electric motor let out some smoke at times. I can't justify the garage space of a nice walk behind gas edger...yet.
Hahah I have not used that specific model but have used some corded edgers before. Wasn’t exactly satisfied lol. When you get a walk behind edger you’ll wonder how you ever got by without one. Thanks for watching
I’m buying the kombi pieces from Echos Shindaiwa line because I like red 😂. They r a remarkably affordable setup . If the spindle part on your weed eater needs replaced it costs more than the kombi weed eater attachment on my kombi . I found that interesting . I don’t like that they aren’t selling them with zerk fittings but you can buy them and install them yourself . Idea for a video 😂. I like the red armor
For stick edger I'll stick with husgavana since they have a quart on the bottom where the rest rub the concrete and wears the outside of gearbox, the husky wears out a metal gaurd
I've been using a cheap Black & Decker corded electric edger, which is basically a circular saw on a stick, for the past 5 years. I don't have a lot of edging to do, and I've moved completely away from gas yard machines since moving down here to Florida from Minnesota, so this was a good alternative to using my string trimmer which just doesn't work as well. I like that it has a guide in the front and a little fin behind the blade that keeps it along the edge of the concrete, as well as three wheels to help keep it stable. The 50' cord I use is a little bit of a hassle, but since I don't have much to do it's easily manageable. I did have to re-solder the wires to the brushes in the motor to keep it working (I did say it was cheap), but since then it's been a real trooper.
I also have a Black and Decker. A friend didn't need it anymore and gave it to me. I wonder if its similar to yours. I don't hate it. It does the job well but it can be tough to use in some areas and the cord can be a hassle.
@@SVW1976 Yes, it's heavy, and the fin in back can keep it from getting close to corners sometimes, and it's super loud (exactly like a circular saw), and the cord can be a little bit of a bother, but aside from that it's kinda OK. And it doesn't need gas, which is a huge thing for me now.
I have been a big Echo fan for years. I have used this edger in the multi attachment line. Works great. And the Red Armor mix is all I use in my Echo equipment.
Same, I have the Echo PAS-2620 with the straight shaft trimmer and straight edger attachment plus the Echo bed edge redefiner. I love all 3 zero issues in 4 years and only run non ethanol fuel with Echo Red Armor mix. Plus, the Echo PB 9010T backpack blower for the win 🏆
Awesome video. I'm a new homeowner and curious to know your thoughts on Honda's VersAttach system and how that compares to other systems you've reviewed
The regular oil (powerblend) is a solid JASO-rated fuel, no problems with it. But Red Armor is truly better - the easiest starts I have ever had with my OPE. Steve's small engine saloon's demonstration was really convincing, he used an endoscope to show it removing existing deposits from the piston and spark arrestor. It does smell kinda funky when it burns, but performance wise I can't complain. Oil is cheap, engine rebuilds are pricey, after all 👍
After trying to edge with a cheap trimmer with edger attachment I was afraid to get a lesser powered edger so I skipped over the PE225 and went to the PE2620. It's a beast but it's loud. It can edge anything. If I get mud I just wash it off before putting away. I also wanted the metal guard on the 2620.
These edgers are great, but personally I prefer my Stihl FS-56 over them. The nice thing about my Stihl is that the choke automatically returns to the open position when I squeeze the throttle, which is a pretty nice feature to have. Anyway I’m in Moab right now with my ATVs and I’m posting some very neat sights on my channel. I’m going to make it a series spanning over four days.
Even for commercial use. Yeah there is a weak point however with echo being a commercial brand you can get easily replacement parts. I have used a Honda split system semi-commerically for over 5 years. No issues yet.
I prefer my Echo PAS 2620 with the bed edge redefiner, straight shaft trimmer head, and straight shaft edger. Going on 4 years, there are zero issues. Also, have an Echo 9010T backpack blower.
Yep! I’ve got the Stihl KM130r attachment system. Had it for 10 years and never a problem. Super handy with only one engine to winterize every year rather than separate for trimmer, edger, pole saw, bed definer, and hedge trimmers.
Excellent video, short, direct and to the point I love your stuff. But I'm going to stick to my string trimmer inflation has put a kibosh on job specific tools. My garage is filling up so I'm toning it down. Keep up the good work.
That's good advice for starting any small motor like that. As soon as it tries to fire even just once, take that choke off. Otherwise you're gonna flood it , and it won't start for quite some time no matter how many times you pull that cord !!
Looks nice but I think it's probably meant more for suburbia. Out here in the hinterlands with our gravel driveways and no curbs between the asphalt and the lawns it'd be wasted on us country folk :)

Great review JB! You definitely have a lot of edging to do! Echo is a great product. Is there a shoulder strap that can be used on that? It may reduce fatigue and stress on your back. Cheers my friend! Any weekend plans?
Hey Jay! Busy weekend my friend! Trying to catch up on hundreds of comments. Every lawnmower video is exploding right now lol. I believe there is a strap available separately. Could probably even rig something up if needed. Not a bad edger though! How was your weekend my friend? Feeling alright lately?
I don't have that much edging to do, so I use my Ryobi battery (4ah) trimmer to edge. I does have a small wheel and the head turns 90 degrees to make things easier. For what I do, it's fine.
Red flag is it does not have a greaseable head like the higher models or have the 2:1 gear reduction but a good residential edger none the less for the price which is what their target market is aimed at here.
I have one and a echo weed eater now for 9 years.... other than having them serviced every 3 years I have not one issue with my echo weedeater or edger...
I have multiple friends yards I do their lawns... 2 to 5 acres... plus my own... one has a 1/4 mile driveway that I edge... one has a 500 foot long bank and 15 foot high bank .. no issues with my echos...
@@rickyheck6780 Good to see it's holding up. I was just highlighting the difference between the models eg if the pe225 worked for everyone there would be no point building the higher spec models.
Bro, This year is your last chance to get a Honda trimmer or edger. Think you should really look into buying one. Would love to see your review of one. My gx35 has been such an amazing reliable unit. I do have a echo srm- 3020 as my back up unit. Echo is the goat for 2 strokes.
I bought a use PE 225 on Facebook market for 110 and I use it for my landscaping business and it runs like a champ, it's good on establishing an edge but on over grown ones it slows down a bit, but I highly recommend it 👍
I am researching edgers because my Echo string trimmer doesn't cut the thick St Augustine runners so well and can tend to walk a little and mess up my line. I also have about 200 yards worth of edging to do. The string trimmer is gobbling up too much of my time.
Motors for echo assembled in Japan, then the entire thing is assembled here. Why they say assembled in USA and not made in USA. Then you have the old ones and the current 3020 that is still made in Japan.
Good buy, ran one for years and used it commercially back in the day. We had are issues with echo ( thus why i refuce to run them again) but made us alot of $$ All in all. Great homeowner edger, and light commercial. To get started. Can't go wrong. All I run is stihl now. Never let's me down. Good vidieo

I don’t like that they aren’t selling them with zerk fittings but you can buy them and install them yourself . Idea for a video 😂
@@marklloyd4153 not a bad idea! 👍
Awesome Jerry thanks for sharing
Red flag is it does not have a greaseable head like the higher models or have the 2:1 gear reduction but a good residential edger none the less for the price which is what their target market is aimed at here.
You nailed it Tom!
@@rickyheck6780 awesome my friend! Thanks for sharing
I will look into those! Thanks for sharing shorty!
I have a echo pas 225 with the edger
Thanks for sharing
Like 154, good video, but to much work for me JB
Thanks for sharing Gregory! Hope all is well bud!
The gear case on echo edgers are garbage now. Mine wore out in less than a year of weekly use.
Wow thanks for sharing this with the community
I bought a use PE 225 on Facebook market for 110 and I use it for my landscaping business and it runs like a champ, it's good on establishing an edge but on over grown ones it slows down a bit, but I highly recommend it 👍
Spot on with my review! Thanks for sharing ea!
How do I talk my wife into this?!
lol Let me talk to her! Get her on board with this message! 👍
I am researching edgers because my Echo string trimmer doesn't cut the thick St Augustine runners so well and can tend to walk a little and mess up my line. I also have about 200 yards worth of edging to do. The string trimmer is gobbling up too much of my time.
@@happyman9612 hey happyman this edger will eat it all right up! 👍
Motors for echo assembled in Japan, then the entire thing is assembled here. Why they say assembled in USA and not made in USA. Then you have the old ones and the current 3020 that is still made in Japan.
Thanks for sharing my friend
Which battery do you recommend for a Simplicity 42" Zero Turn with a Kawasaki FR651v? In a pinch, had to get a Duralast Gold from Autozone.
Hey weekend! I don’t work on zero turns at the moment but duralast batteries never steered me wrong! 👍
Good buy, ran one for years and used it commercially back in the day. We had are issues with echo ( thus why i refuce to run them again) but made us alot of $$
All in all. Great homeowner edger, and light commercial. To get started. Can't go wrong.
All I run is stihl now. Never let's me down.
Good vidieo
Appreciate you sharing g your experience with yours drumhead! Definitely a good edger for the average homeowner!
Therein lies your problem. Made with foreign and domestic parts!! Unbelievable
Thanks for watching
That’s edger is trash, super weak!!
Thanks for watching
Ya lost me on all those steps to get it going. I’ll just click in my battery and pull the trigger.
Oof. I can get mixing gas or having to go to a gas station every once in a while, but to much steps to start a weedeater..... cope harder.
Choke up. Pull. Choke down. Pull!
