The most important thing to note from this video is that all these head distillers of so many different types of whiskey, not one of them picked a rare, expensive, ridiculous whisky. They all picked perfectly affordable and findable bottles, predominantly scotch. I find it equally amazing and fantastic that Glenfiddich 12, Highland Park 12 and Caol Ila 12 were all mentioned as the distillers favourite, they're all incredible whiskies but they're seen as just run-of-the-mill bottles that anyone can get. Maybe the time had come for us to stop chasing (and creating) unicorn bottles, and just enjoy the glorious water of life that is presented to us.

That’s what I said... the Caol Ila was my favorite from the list (other than the fact I haven’t tried the Willet... so I can’t speak for that).
I was surprised at how many popular core range bottles that were chosen.

It's awesome how just this past Wednesday I had picked up this Highland Park!
I do like the smokyness that's in Johnny Walker. I may have to try this Caol Ila

    • @AmericanScotchDoctor

I would highly recommend the Caol Ila! It’s my favorite from this list.
It’s a simpler form of a moderately peated Scotch.
More twiggy and ash smoke rather than seaweed and brine...
Don’t get me wrong l... there’s some brine in there... but not like Laphroaig or Ardbeg.
      Cheers Xylasider!

I was born and raised in Bardstown Ky. Bourbon capital baby!!! I actually lived next to Barton’s distillery. There were times it smelled so good outside. But then when they cleaned out the tanks it was a tough smell. I guess growing up there is why I’m a bourbon drinker but I’ve expanded to Irish whiskey lately. I’ve tried to get into scotch but there’s something in it I can’t get past. It may be the peat. I’ll still keep trying though.

Glenfiddich 12 and mr walkers black label are perfectly fine if you just want to stare into space after a long day. which is what most people want to do. So they are both very good.

I understand about looking for higher ABV because I'm a REALLY BIG FAN of higher ABV REALLY DARK ales, porters and stouts. In truth I've only recently started appreciating hard liquors, mainly whiskeys and bourbons. The one that really got me interested is Tin Cup whiskey. If I could ever find and afford it is Horse Soldier whiskey. I would really love it you could try it so I could experience it vicariously through you on UA-cam.

I love that one of these bottles was one that I not only already had on my shelf, but that I was drinking just last night! (HP12)
I am still a whiskey noob and it was difficult to identify the profile of this whiskey, so it's awesome to see what experts say about it. Now I know how to identify malt, because it's a big characteristic of HP12.

Interesting how on Scotch #2 (Glenfiddich 12) how Rex and Daniel loved it with a blind tasting, which was way different in their own review of the same.

    • @AmericanScotchDoctor
      @AmericanScotchDoctor 3 роки тому +5

Batch variation... change in palates... or were they subliminally talked into liking the Glenfiddich 12 because it was on someone’s favorite list???
      Could be all 3.
      Whisk(e)y is weird...
It’s based so much more on emotions than I would expect.
Even the most influential whisk(e)y people can’t get around biases unless it is a true blind taste with 0 outside input.
And then they may be disliking a flavor or scent based on a situation in their past...
      Again it’s weird... but fun.
      Cheers!

The first distiller talking about his love for Ardbeg and how his first sip he hated it and the second he loved it.
The first smoky Islay Scotch I ever tried was Laphroaig 10. I know the owner of one of my local liquor/cigar stores and he has a whole area just for trying liquor, specifically whisky's and he always has a Laphroaig on hand for those wanting to try an Islay. I didn't hate my first sip but I didn't like it, second sip it started to grow on me and finally the third sip I said to myself "Hey this is actually pretty good."
And that's how I first experienced and learned to love Smokey Scotches.
