    I'm a research scientist, and I can tell you that when an article says "online ahead of print," it's not a preprint. It has been through the formal peer review process and has been accepted for publication. It just hasn't been printed in the official paper version of the journal yet.

    • @MerkDolf

      If a study is peer reviewed or not isn't so important to me, I look at the information and if it is interesting I look more into it.
      Remember when the peer reviewed studies showed that inhaling the smoke of burning Tabaco leaves is good for you.

    Love these study videos!! Thanks for doing them! PS my gum health also improved as do many of my patients (who have spontaneously told me about their changes). My changes are not just my observation. My dentist is thrilled. Instead of going in for cleanings every 3 months as I used to before becoming plant-based, he spaced it to every 4 months. At my most recent visit, he suggested I now go in every 6 months instead because of how good my gums look with the "spontaneous" healing. The before and after pictures are quite impressive!

    Before, when I was vegetarian, the dental hygienist would always tell me that I needed to floss more because my gums would bleed a lot at cleanings. To be honest, I don't floss and the dental hygienist telling me to floss more never really got me to floss. I know, bad patient, shame on me, But now that I am vegan, when I go get dental cleanings, my gums are in such better condition that there is very minimal bleeding, nothing out of the ordinary. The dental hygienist now just tells me to keep doing what I'm doing because my teeth and gums look great. She even said they were exemplary. Little does she know that I never floss.

      Hi BW. I had similar experience with my gums but found out why. When I had my blood work done I requested a C reactive protein test and mine was 1.5 (normal 0 - .9). I too noticed my gums quit bleeding after I switched to a WFPBNO diet. 2 months later I had my blood tested again and it dropped to .4. C reactive protein is an inflammation marker and a sign of heart disease and stroke.

I didn’t really floss though, only rarely. Now I floss and I made it my nightly habit! my gum health is a lot better. But I still need my hygienist to clean my gums every few months, but nothing like before! I can tell when my gums are going to sh t actually. I think it has more to do with your genetics more than anything. I would suggest to gently floss and make it a habit! Someone had explained to me once, it’s like not washing your hands, yet that still didn’t convince me. The painful perio maintenance that I needed every few months did. Best

    Mic have you seen any studies on how quickly inflammation can change when you change your diet? I'm wondering if that is the principle reason vegans do so much better with covid and pneumonia - much fewer pathogens to fight which allows their immune system to be more effective and less overwhelmed. Perhaps just persuading people to give up meat during the holidays alone would result in a meaningful improvement on virus outcomes?

      I've been both severely depressed and had my best mental health ever as a vegan. It was totally just related to my general life (heart break, work situation etc.). It also can weigh on you and make you feel isolated to live in a society that actively harms and defends harming the ones you are trying to help. That can worsen your mental health. A psychology professor from australia studies exactly that and gave it a name - vystopia.
      If you eat a reasonably healthy vegan diet you should NOT be at a higher risk of worse mental health than those with "conventional" diets.

    I like your videos on multiple studies.
    Weighing in on the ice cream, the point of being vegan is not to remain pure, but to choose products that don’t contribute to the exploitation of animals. Trace amounts of dairy in a vegan ice cream could be a problem for people who are allergic, but the vegan ice cream doesn’t depend on an industry that takes mother’s milk from calves.
    It does seem that some people with eating disorders gravitate to a vegan diet to try and mask unhealthy restrictions. On the other hand, I was interested to see a video from happyblacklegends where she explains how becoming a vegan helped her overcome an eating disorder. The big difference seems to be between those who think vegan is a diet and those who understand that it’s an ethical position.

    • @Smash_knits
      @Smash_knits 2 роки тому +1

      I appreciate this comment, and I agree - choose products that don't contribute to the exploitation of animals.. but maybe another perspective - it kind of depends on how far you want to take 'not contributing'.. Like, I used to eat french fries, from anywhere (a lot of times that's the only 'vegan' option when I'm out eating w/friends), but now I've stopped eating french fries from anywhere that's not a 100% vegan restaurant/at home because they're fried in the same oil as chicken/meat and I feel like that makes them no longer vegan. This has also helped me significantly reduce my french fry consumption which can only help.. so w/the ice cream, knowing vegan ice creams may not techically be vegan gives me another reason to just not eat vegan ice cream, and I'm not mad about it.. If I want ice cream I could blend up some frozen bananas, or make my own w/coconut milk or something, or just make a super thick smoothie.. If you aren't concerned w/being a 'perfect' vegan then definitely don't beat yourself up over these things, at least you aren't eating cow's milk ice cream, or actual fried chicken! etc.. But I think these kinds of studies are kind of interesting in that products are advertising as vegan, but still in some technical way contribute to the exploitation of animals.
      I started thinking about the french fry thing when I went to a restaurant that was testing impossible chicken strips, but were frying them in the same oil as actual chicken and I felt that defeated the purpose for actual vegans...
      Idk if this comment makes sense but hopefully some people will be able to follow, & feel me on this?

    • @kathivy
      @kathivy 2 роки тому +1

      @@Smash_knits makes sense, everyone has to decide where to draw that line of “practicable and possible.” I’ve made the same decision concerning French fries and ice cream for the most part, and I make fries at home in the oven and blend up bananas with other fruit for ice cream (so much healthier!) but the one time that I might go out to a restaurant in town with visiting family then I’ll eat the potatoes fried in gack oil because there aren’t other vegan options on the menu, and I can see myself eating a pint of Ben & Jerry’s non-dairy ice cream on my birthday or something even though I’m sure that the sugar isn’t vegan (there is no vegan ice cream in stores here). I focus on trying to make the right decisions in my day-to-day life and I don’t sweat the small stuff.

    Thanks Mic, great video as always. The part about eating disorders caught my attention, as I have some history there. I read in a couple of books that on a vegan diet, especially predominantly raw, you don't need as many calories because your body doesn't have to expend as much energy on metabolic clean-up as it would if you were eating animal products and other junk. I used that as an excuse to eat less but took it too far and ignored the fact that I was starving myself.
    I'd be interested to know more about veganism and mental health. I've been vegan for 6 years, and my mental health hasn't improved in that time. It's hard to say whether it's gotten worse. It was pretty garbage to begin with. If there is a link, I'm curious whether it's to do with nutrition, or heightened awareness of systemic cruelty etc. It would be good to hear what you come up with.

I am wondering which of the two is better for a Type-1 diabetic since one and highly glycemic which spikes blood sugars, but the other is high in nuts which lowers the conversion to DHA since nuts are high in omega 6 fatty acids, and the high fat diet is problematic (per Dr. Neil Barnard & Dr. Khambatta) for diabetics since fat takes priority in the cells, which block glucose.

If checking all ingredient list is pathological bc anorexics do it, but they count it as pathological in vegans, though it's necessary, would be a stretch.

      I was wondering if some people don't actually consider veganism as an eating disorder.... When I have told some people that I'm vegan, they certainly ask questions they would ask a person with an eating disorder.... Also, what's wrong with checking all ingredients lists? doesn't everyone do that? and if not, why not? If you're going to select a movie, do you just go by the title or do you look a what it's about and who's in it?

      @@annerigby4400 Yeah everybody should check what they're putting into their bodies. People sadly don't. And the conversation around eating disorders gets blurred by people shouting orthorexia at each and every try of someone eating healthier.

    Since going WFPB my dental hygienist complains that there really isn't almost nothing for her to do since I don't develop very much if any hard tartar on my teeth. But she says that she is glad that I started flossing regularly (before I went WFPB my gums were a mess and every cleaning she would give me her stern eye and say I need to floss everyday). I did have the heart to tell her that I still hate flossing and very seldom do it. Almost certainly it is change in pH in my mouth from acid, which favors the growth of plaque forming bacteria, to alkaline, which favors the healthy bacteria play a key role in the conversion of dietary nitrites (or is it nitrides, I can never remember) into nitrous oxide that help keep our arteries nice and dilated.
    So she just checks all my teeth, maybe scraps off a spot or two and we spend the rest of the time talking about how a whole food vegan diet is fantastic for your teeth and gums, not to mention your arteries and why she should really move towards this way of eating. She hasn't moved entirely, but at least she is no longer eating a low-carb diet that just made her hangry all the time. Now she says love to bring in a baked sweet potato and black bean soup for lunch. She thought all those "bad carbs" without enough "protein" would cause her to have a sugar crash mid-afternoon. Instead she says that just the opposite is the case where she is not hungry at all and is fully alert right up to dinner time.

      @Peter Rabbit, RDN - Pianist-Composer ♫ almost none of them do on a WFPB diet in sufficient levels. That is why it is important to mix your protein sources. Quinoa is an exception as it is a complete protein. But if you don’t eat a lot of quinoa, it is important to vary your plant protein sources.

On Monday, I'm giving a report on the public health and environmental impacts of different protein sources. I'd love to send it to you to check out if interested. (it's a powerpoint)

    I don't know if I read far down enough in the comments, but I didn't see anything to the effect that: it seems the simplest "vegan test" is to look at the whites of a person's eyes; people on a plant-based diet generally have clearer, whiter eyes than those of omnivores.

    That's rather strange to think the cost of vegan diets would ever be considered high. You can sustain an awful long time on rice, beans, potato, pasta, cabbage and squash for dirt cheap. All you're doing is removing an entire category of food from your inventory to call it vegan.

    The ice-cream contamination information was shocking. But one shouldn't be buying vegan ice-cream all the time. It's highly processed and fattening. I prefer to make my own nice-cream. Some frozen bananas and berries! and boom! The best nice-cream ever! Super affordable and healthier!

    The biggest problem for me trying to stay vegan is who you live with. I'm pretty modest, but the person I'm with is a food fan. So she wants to try all kinds of foods. I can't draw a 100% line. It comes down to a social or relational problem. We've eliminated meat, now fish, but milk products, she can't.

      Walmart’s “Organic Great Value” garbanzo beans is also relatively low sodium. I.e. 120mg/0.5 cup vs. Bush’s Low Sodium Garbanzos at 140mg/0.5 cup. But I’ve never used the aquafaba for anything but savory salad dressings. So I can’t vouch for what either brand would taste like as a whipped cream replacement. But it would be an inexpensive experiment. And, as an examination of the salt content of a McDonald’s shake will tell you, salt enhances sweetness (up to a point).
