Watching you fit the metal rims into the tires reminds me that there must of been some technique that mechanics back in the day used that have been lost to time. Makes me wonder what else we used to know but have forgotten. Great video! I'm enjoying seeing this come together.
Model T's came at a time of great innovation and at a time when about 60 car manufacturers were actively coming up with great new products and features. But one very weak area was tires and wheels. The wood and metal spoke wheels have so many bad old design and weaknesses. I am in the process ... after finding out the old Ford 8n tractor has front spindles of the same size bearings. If I am successful in using either 16 or 19 inch dish wheels, it will make for affordable tires and a safer more comfortable ride . Right now I am machining into these tractor hubs the rear hub from a T, to the 8n front hub... for the rear.
Totally different technology on the tire install; that tool is indispensable. I wonder if you can add weights to balance the wheels; was noticing the front left was not as you rotated it. This is such a great project and it is moving along wonderfully!!
I own a '28 Hudson Super Six and thanks to u i know now how to change tyres. I had a small hole in the tube and went to a tyre shop, which wells classic tyres, but they had no idea about this rim and used a plastic hammer to hit the rim and get it in position. At the next day the tyre was flat again and i went to an other tyre shop, cause i didn't want, that they hit my rim again at this way and the next shop did the same. Now i^m done with this shops and i decided to buy a tool like this. I live in Switzerland and i will buy one on ebay.
I noticed when you were bolting on the left front tire that when you gave it a spin, it didn't go around evenly. Probably out of balance. You can get some stick on weights and install them on the back side of the rims. When you get the car on the road, you'll feel the difference with balanced tires :)
Where do I get new rims and the free floating eyelets that are used to bolt the rim against the inner hub? Because your wheel eyelets are able to be positioned wherever the bolts stick out from the hub, they will always make a good fit. Mine are welded to the rim, broke off, rewelded, and now misaligned to the bolts, but cannot be adjusted to fit. Where did you get these?
Cool as!! I noticed the rear left had 4 bolts to secure only. Was that the only difference with that rim? I remember the previous video you realised that one was different.
It sounds like the four lug wheel is the only “Ford” wheel. The other 3 must be aftermarket. I’ve been trying to find a rim to use as a spare and I can’t find one that matches the other 3 wheels anywhere.
@@Jerod_Helt My 24 T has Jaxon rims and wheels, often used on Chevrolets. I was able to buy a spare rim on eBay. There aren't a lot out there, but they are available.
@@Jerod_Helt thanks, there is a product called Rust restorer that works great on smaller pieces such as tail lights, carbs, and cleans them with out any damage to the unit.
It probably doesn't matter but you can tell those wheels are way out of balance. Simply by the way they're inclined to rock backwards and forwards. Doubt it'll make much difference to the driving experience given the low speeds involved. Great informative content though.
Never knew the process of installing classic style tyres was essentially the same process we use for bicycle tyres now. Very informative video!
Best split rim guide ever! Well done. From a grateful 1929 Chev owner. Cheers.
Having done many a “T” tire I can say your rim tool is some of the best money ever spent!

I agree the wheels are on model T leave a lot to be desired.
You're lucky to have split rims. Clinchers are a nightmare. Glad to see someone else using screwdrivers as tyre levers :)
Your grandfather would be proud of you! I like the timelaps of your videos. It makes them looking vintage - a 20ies Movie...
It’s great you’re saving this model T! Great video.
Thanks for doing this video. I need to do the same task shortly on my T. I have the rim spreader but have never used it or seen it in operation.

The car is looking great!
Love the screw driver tire iron!! A real tire iron would make it so much easier!
I love WALTER !!! And the old T ain't bad either. Rock on, son !
Nice, I'm waiting for you drive this car.
Great job! It looks so much more like a car now!

That is a lot of baby powder... 😀
Lol. Yeah I might have overdone it with the baby powder
Nice wheels.
Really cool vid! Really like the way it looks with the "clear over rust" and the red rims.... really keen on seeing you work on the engine
Nice car and nice skillful mechanic
Excellent work. I love that wheel tool.
YES! I was waiting for this to come out

Nice job with the wheels, they're looking great and the Model T starts turning into a car again. Any news on the termites?
I’ll discuss the termites in this weeks Sunday update video 👍

eBay is probably you’re best bet
Put your tool in the right spot on that rim and it'll expand it for you

How good does the rust stuff you used work ? I'm working on a '29 Dodge Sedan I bought and want to make a driver out of it. The T is looking good.
The rust reformer works great. Not sure about the clear coat yet

Yeah, unbalanced and bent… it doesn’t seem to matter at such low speeds
👍👍✌️
What year is this car ?
1923👍

People working on cars in sandals just makes me cringe. Also 30 PSI is way too low.
Mano no lo as planchado ni masillado ni pintado te falta mucho para que luzca como fabrica
No lo estoy pintando. Me gusta que muestra su edad
why not just talk?
