@Roy Futrell Semper Fi to your uncle. A Captain's Mast isn't a commendation; it's actually a punishment. I'm not accusing your uncle of being punished, obviously; just letting you know so you could research his achievement again if desired. My personal history of the Hornet is short but sweet. While docked in Alameda as a museum ship, I was promoted to Staff Sergeant on the flight deck. Reason 1: I was born in San Francisco, and the Hornet faces SF in her current position. Reason 2: I deployed to combat zones twice on the USS Wasp, so the Hornet was a great replacement once I was back stationed on the west coast (Wasp is an east coast ship).
I was privileged to know a WWII vet who served on the hornet and, being an artist, his commander assigned him to do the painting of insignia on the fighter aircraft. He also created decorative designs on the planes like Hollywood stars, girlfriends, and and nicknames for individual planes and their pilots. Additionally, he was asked to paint a mural on the mess hall wall of all the enemy ships and planes the hornet and its air crews were responsible for shooting down or sinking. In later years, at the time I knew him, he was asked by his son if he wanted to travel to California and visit the docked ship. He did visit and, while there, amazed his son by threading his way through the maze of passageways to get to his birthing room. Then, when the two of them traveled to the mess hall, they were standing next to the mural when their guide stated that they had been searching for years to discover the artist. He disclosed that he was the man and, " bells rang and shouts went out that they had finally discovered the artist ! " He was given an honorary membership in their veterans organization and free passes for life to the memorial facility. It was a high point in my life to have met and known such a gentle and interesting man. God bless him and all of his WWII veteran friends and comrades.

My Dad crewed on Hornet (CV-8) from a few months before the Pearl Harbor attack, through the Doolittle Raid Launch, and all the battles, right to the day she was sunk by the US Navy, after kamikaze attacks disabled her in the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands. I know a lot of people served longer, and risked their lives on the Hornet (CV-12) People just need to remember the second carrier Hornet was renamed while under construction, to prevent the Japanese from confirming the loss of the first Hornet. And of course, the survivors of the battle continued to serve for the Duration of US participation in WWII.
Usually they talk about how the ships were used and modified after WW2 but not here. This is particularly unfortunate because the ship was modified so completely, men who served on her in WW2 wouldn't recognize the ship as it is today. And talking about the bow, angled deck, and other changes would be helpful for viewers unfamiliar with U.S. aircraft carriers.
I haven't been to this particular museum ship but I went to the Midway in San Diego and it was really fantastic. The ship and the aircraft are obviously amazing to get to see in person but I think the highlight is that the museum staff are former members of the military who are super familiar with all the navy in and outs.
Was glad you mentioned Hornet CV-8 and the heroic battles she was in. She gave her all along with many men when she was sunk in battle. Its great they recently found her wreck. Along comes her reberth with Hornet CV-12. My father (Commander John W Ramsey) was supposed to have been on Hornet CV-8 in fall of 42 with VF-11 Sundowners, but she had been sunk. In 1944-45 he was with VF-11 (2nd tour) on Hornet CV-12 in various battles as a fighter pilot. Great video thank you!
My dad served on the Hornet until she was sunk and was transferred to the Wasp where he stayed until he was sent home from injuries during a fighter attack. He spent the rest of his life disabled and suffered much pain. But without any doubt the proudest days of his life was spent on those carriers.
@@wramsey2656 Right back at you brother! All the honor and glory goes to the boys and girls in the thick of it. None for me. I was USNR for 8 years but the worst fighting I was in the middle of was between the girls. Them Navy gals are feisty!! lol

Donnie Montoya I remember, it was mid day one part, and we were exploring mid deck and I was of course in the back of the group. Every corner we made, I saw something move.
I had the pleasure of spending time on this ship several times. once in 6th grade and spent the night on it twice as a Boy Scout. fun ship would recommend that if you have the time and money go on board.
I had the pleasure of visiting this lovely ship when I was younger quite a few times. It didnt really hit me till now but the absolute scale of this thing is amazing. I'll go back sometime soon.
She sits at the pier her predecessor sailed from to conduct the Dolittle Raid. It's a Public Shore (& historical landmark) so there's no restrictions on walking her side of the pier.
The Hornet is my favorite ship of all time.I live in Alameda near the Hornet. We had a membership the the Hornet so I would visit almost everyday! It was a big part of my childhood. I would like to visit again sometime. 😁
The war footage made me realize that if we have a conventional war today, there'd be people with phones or go-pros recording everything, maybe not livestreaming cuz military secrecy, but definitely a lot of actual HD footage afterwards. We might even have multiple angles of the same battle to construct VR experiences so normal people can be in the battle without the actual danger. That is, if we do go into conventional war, instead of just nuking each other off the face of the earth...
I love these videos... Good job WarGaming. I like how you used computer graphics to showed some of the gun emplacements that were later removed (the aft bofors for example), that was a great touch.
Thank you for another video WG. As a Navy veteran it is sad to see any ship in the kind of condition Hornet is in. She was a great warship. Hope the city she is berthed in will correct this and get her looking ship shape again. Her crew deserves it and she deserves it.
CV-12 is in port at Alameda, California. She is not owned by the city but by a museum foundation and is not visited as much as the Midway or other popular carriers. we need to promote it to get more money to repair the old girl.
It is a great shame that we have a great ship like that in such disrepair and lack of paint. God bless you all and I hope that something will be done soon to get it done before it gets too late.
She is not in disrepair which tells me you haven't been on the ship. Lacking paint on the exterior is true. Stripping all that paint off, while sitting there, isn't an easy task if at all. I suggest you come down and volunteer where I can put you to work on the Island which I have been taking care of, inside and out, by myself for 22 years.
I love the USS Hornet. She is an amazing aircraft carrier with a rich history. Also I got to sleep overnight in the barracks of the carrier which is pretty cool and scary cause I think I heard and saw the ghosts of dead sailors.
I live on the east end of alameda and last time i was on this ship, i swear i felt something walk through me in the sick bay. Was weird. Havent been back since.
I love this series, I would love to see if you could.do one for the USS Enterprise CV-6. Though it is no longer with us, I think y'all can do it since you could for the Yomato.
It’s really quite remarkable how talented and effective these videos are. I find myself curious; this level of quality doesn’t come from thin air. What’s the story here? Why are these so good?
Thank you for this video on the USS Hornet CV-12, my Uncle served aboard the CV-8 that was sunk, he was blown off of the deck into the water, when he was found, the only article of clothing he had on was a sock.
say what u want about Hornet, but the real hero was the Big E, ( Enterprise) was the one and only carrier that was in all major battles of the pacific, including the pearl harbor attack, where she was one of the main targets. but wasnt there that morning.
SlipshodOdin 301 what about the Essex CV-16 Lexington? She was named after the second US carrier, the CV-2 Lexington Class: Lexington that was converted from a unfinished battlecruiser (supposed to be better then the battleship) class of the same name along with her sister ship the Saratoga, the original sunk in the battle of the coral sea after being damaged beyond repair and was scuttled by the Yorktowns bombers. When she was sunk the Essex class CV-16 Cabot was being built by the same harbor who built the CV-2 Lexington 21 years prior, they requested from Frank Knox if they could rename the Cabot to the Lexington, he allowed it. CV-16 She shot down the most planes down in the whole war, and a highly decorated Carrier. She received the PUC award, and 11 battle stars and was the flag ship of Admiral Marc Mitscher who led the Fast Carrier Task Force. A added fact was that she inherited the nickname of her predecessor, Lady Lex. Also Japanese pilots and sailors nicknamed her the Blue ghost due to her Navy blue camouflage paint and that she bearded the name of a destroyed carrier. (that's what it says on her info at the museum at least) She was decommissioned in 1991, she served longer then any of the other Essex Carriers in the navy and because she was built before of their other surviving Essex carriers, she is the oldest carrier in the world and designated as a National Historic Landmark. After her decommissioning, she was donated to Corpus Christi, Texas. I've been dying to see some love to either of the Lady Lex and the Blue Ghost be on naval legends, she by far my favorite carrier because of her unique history and the fact I've see her only a few times in person and been only once to her museum even though I live in the city.
I remember going through a phase where i was obsessed with the hornet and the pacific theatre, yeah, i memorized so much that it got to the point where there was basically nothing left to learn.
Hornet callsign CV 12 she is the third and final ship of the Essex Class built to replace her Yorktown Class namesake which got sunk at Santa Cruz by kamikazes. USS Kearsarge was renamed after Hornet CV 8 was sunk and quickly put into action with the Pacific Fleet she fought from the Gilberts to Okinawa and even served in Nam and Korea and she was the ship that pulled Apollo 11 out of the Pacific. When Nam ended she was sold to the Alameda Naval Museum where she is today. Ranger also use to be there but that ship was mothballed and finally scrapped last year.
The catapult doesn't hook to a cable on the aircraft, it hooks onto a T-shaped protrusion from the lower part of the nose gear. A cable hooked as shown would tear up the wings and/or fuselage. The cable shown on the Phantom (grey jet) looks to be a tie-down cable - and it's not even the same type as would have been used at sea.

I wish there is some kind of custom scenario like in 13:22. some kind of custom scenario mission in WoW versus AI, where we must move in unison like protecting the aircraft carrier from incoming AI aircrafts and ships from all sides. if we lose the aircraft carrier, we lose the game, and we must move as one convoy to get the bonus credits or XP would be pretty fun
ESSEX type was strong, all Japanese know ,but it mean that USA is Large Economy than Japan. Perhaps the Ship that some Japanese most respect is ENTERPRISE under William. F. Halsey . Because She fought against Japanese Navy on all time of Pacific War.
The Big E is the only Aircraft Carrier to smack down Hornet's record. At one point the Enterprise was the only US Carrier in the war til the new Essex class was built. So think of the Hornet (CV-12) as second place or runner up to the title of Great Aircraft Carrier. But remember this is the second Hornet the first one was sunk so you have to add that history to this Hornet. The Enterprise still lives on in parts that are mounted to the current Enterprise as goodluck
I've been to the Hornet museum many times. Excellent! I wish it were in san Diego, rather than the Midway. Too many obnoxious millennials working on the Midway

Great video! 59 battles! Wow. Just utterly amazing. The one thing that really bothered me while watching this video, was the amount of work needed to the ship and aircraft. From what I could tell, it badly needs some repairs and some new paint.

She's near and dear to us and parked in Wargaming North America's backyard at the USS Hornet Aircraft Carrier Museum, located in Alameda, CA. This Essex-class carrier led a storied career in and out of combat: serving in WWII, deploying to Vietnam, and playing a key part in the Apollo space program.
The Hornet aircraft carrier is known as one of the luckiest of the American World War II ships. She sailed through 59 battles without any damage, and put an end to the history of the Japanese Imperial Navy.

Thanks for the code and if I may ask will USS Enterprise be up for sale in July or at least on July 4?
I think it's amazing to be able to leave an aircraft carrier during Pacific War.
I respect America. from Japan
Love the music in these videos. They really do an amazing job with the presentations and productions, when making these.
The quality in these videos jesus im in love with the channel i watch all of them RIP to the History channel the old days were good
I really like these quality documentaries. Keep it up!
I know a lot of people served longer, and risked their lives on the Hornet (CV-12)
People just need to remember the second carrier Hornet was renamed while under construction, to prevent the Japanese from confirming the loss of the first Hornet. And of course, the survivors of the battle continued to serve for the Duration of US participation in WWII.
10 people hate this for not showing Enterprise CV6
No i hate it because it isn’t even telling the story of the hornet. So bad video !
Super intéressant ! Respect à cet ancien pilote ! Merci pour ce super document
It's amazing how quickly the U.S. built ships during WWII!
Yes I agree, I've seen footage of workers men and women literally running and throwing hot rivets across the deck.
They're called the greatest generation
Was glad you mentioned Hornet CV-8 and the heroic battles she was in. She gave her all along with many men when she was sunk in battle. Its great they recently found her wreck. Along comes her reberth with Hornet CV-12. My father (Commander John W Ramsey) was supposed to have been on Hornet CV-8 in fall of 42 with VF-11 Sundowners, but she had been sunk. In 1944-45 he was with VF-11 (2nd tour) on Hornet CV-12 in various battles as a fighter pilot. Great video thank you!
It was kind of neat, when it showed all the ships turning around. All those ships turning around, like synchronized swimming, very cool picture!
My dad served on the Hornet until she was sunk and was transferred to the Wasp where he stayed until he was sent home from injuries during a fighter attack. He spent the rest of his life disabled and suffered much pain. But without any doubt the proudest days of his life was spent on those carriers.
Salute your dad and you Bee! My dad also served on CV-12 1944-45.
@@wramsey2656 Right back at you brother! All the honor and glory goes to the boys and girls in the thick of it. None for me. I was USNR for 8 years but the worst fighting I was in the middle of was between the girls. Them Navy gals are feisty!! lol
can you guys do a video on the USS Lexington preserved in Corpus Christi, Texas. it's a beautiful ship with an amazing history.
Someone agrees with me too. Was about to post a comment about it. The Blue Ghost deserves to be mentioned.
+Lord Blue I visited during a school trip and spent the night aboard her. probably the most creeped I've ever been but it was so cool.
+Donnie Montoya When I was in Cub Scouts, we went at least every year. I saw stuff out of the corner of my eyes a lot. Never met Charlie though.
+Lord Blue I never saw anything just got creeped out but one night we all went into the anchor room in the bow and got all scared, when they started telling stories and slamming doors and moving chsins around us. pretty sure it wad fake anyway lol
Donnie Montoya
I remember, it was mid day one part, and we were exploring mid deck and I was of course in the back of the group. Every corner we made, I saw something move.
I had the pleasure of spending time on this ship several times. once in 6th grade and spent the night on it twice as a Boy Scout. fun ship would recommend that if you have the time and money go on board.
Fun fact there’s a stain on one of the mattresses there because I threw up on it when I was on a scout overnight trip
I had the pleasure of visiting this lovely ship when I was younger quite a few times. It didnt really hit me till now but the absolute scale of this thing is amazing. I'll go back sometime soon.
Best Quote Ever 1:45 "Was To Let The Japanese Know That Your Bomb Our Homeland You Close To Our Homeland We Will Come To You"
I love learning new things. I always thought Hornet was sunk during the war. Nice to see she is well and loved.
Hornet was sunk in the Pacific. That was CV 8 the sister ship to the Enterprise CV 6. This is the next Hornet CV 12.
wow, gonna need to go back to Alameda to see this beautiful lady again, being ex-navy Airedale makes her near and dear to me.
About an hours drive.
I live right next to it too! It's an awesome ship 🚢
I must say that this little documentaries are amazing! Great Job!
@@akotada8443 What you said. :) All the city wants is the berthing fees. :|
Was weird. Havent been back since.
anyone know the music between 00:27~00:50?
They own that song
I love these videos. An important note from this video is that it took 8 carriers to sink the Yamato.
My grandpapy served on this ship and shot down a kamikaze.
@Captain Picard cool! Do u know what type of aircraft was that ur granddad shot down and what gun was he on?
OMG FINALLY A SHIP I HAVE BEEN ON! I WENT THERE TWICE! DEFINITELY WORTH IT!
I love this series, I would love to see if you could.do one for the USS Enterprise CV-6. Though it is no longer with us, I think y'all can do it since you could for the Yomato.
Do the Enterprise! She was way more decorated!
Wasn't the enterprise destroyed or am I stupid ?
You're stupid. You're thinking of her sisters. (Yorktown CV5, Wasp CV7, Hornet CV8)
She was used a target ship for a nuke, as a side not the the Prince Eugen survived that test, well sort of.
GlassTopRX7
Actually, that was the Saratoga. Enterprise was a museum for a few months then was scrapped.
My bad you are correct.
Hornet, Yorktown.... where is the video on ENTERPRISE!!
azurlane i see😊
She was scraped
It’s really quite remarkable how talented and effective these videos are. I find myself curious; this level of quality doesn’t come from thin air. What’s the story here? Why are these so good?
No video has ever shown what it is like in a CV'S CIC during real world ops. No words I know of can express the sensation of just what that's like.
I think it would be stressful
i got free admission on this ship during high school. i played jazz concerts on the hanger deck with my my high school jazz band. 1st chair trombone
I must say, the name "Doolittle Raid" is pretty cool.
Wrong Hornet
USS HORNET is my favourite aircraft carrier in BOW. It's compact and deadly. Good AA-Guns. Love it.
that cartwheeling bomb caused a heart rate increase over here lol.
My pops deployed on the Hornet a couple times as an aviator. Go Navy!
If I'm not mistaken, it was this aircraft carrier that welcomed the three from Apollo 11 after their splashdown in 1969?
Yes, that's true
@@oneworldgovernment9548 I believe that was Yorktown.
Thank you for this video on the USS Hornet CV-12, my Uncle served aboard the CV-8 that was sunk, he was blown off of the deck into the water, when he was found, the only article of clothing he had on was a sock.
I would love to se a Neval Legends about KMS Tirpitz or KMS Bismarck :))
say what u want about Hornet, but the real hero was the Big E, ( Enterprise) was the one and only carrier that was in all major battles of the pacific, including the pearl harbor attack, where she was one of the main targets. but wasnt there that morning.
what about the hornet's sister ship the Enterprises the most decorated warship in history?
Enterprise was the best carrier in world war 2 performance wise even though it was outdated later in the war
CV-16
She shot down the most planes down in the whole war, and a highly decorated Carrier.
(that's what it says on her info at the museum at least)
She was decommissioned in 1991, she served longer then any of the other Essex Carriers in the navy and because she was built before of their other surviving Essex carriers, she is the oldest carrier in the world and designated as a National Historic Landmark.
After her decommissioning, she was donated to Corpus Christi, Texas.
I've been dying to see some love to either of the Lady Lex and the Blue Ghost be on naval legends, she by far my favorite carrier because of her unique history and the fact I've see her only a few times in person and been only once to her museum even though I live in the city.
joe ledoux i know this is very old but wasn't hms warpsite the most decorated warship in history?
Man im so glad this ship is only an hour's drive away form me.
Enterprise also deserve to go her own Vid, its a shame instead keeping her she was scrap. :*(
Wasn't scrapped she was bombed with a test nuke.
+GlassTopRX7 She was scrapped. Saratoga sunk in nuclear testing
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Enterprise_(CVN-80)
Yes the first version was scrapped but look at this new one coming soon :D
cant wait for the new enterprise, i hear the captains name is kirk.
jeffrey mcfadden kirk is the captain of the Zumwalt litoral combat ship
I remember going through a phase where i was obsessed with the hornet and the pacific theatre, yeah, i memorized so much that it got to the point where there was basically nothing left to learn.
Could you do the IJN Yukikaze?
It was also a very lucky ship.
Lol trying to catch a plane by shooting search light directly on it
+ExcaliburZero That won't happen, because Yukikaze or Tan Yang got scrapped.
Bleary Does that really matter?
They also did one on Yamato but she sank.
Well then, didn't see that video yet. Thanks for the info.
+Bleary its an older video so its not a big suprise. and no problem~
Fourth in Essex class out of 24.
I was on the “Connie”, Marine Detachment USS Constellation CV64
The catapult doesn't hook to a cable on the aircraft, it hooks onto a T-shaped protrusion from the lower part of the nose gear. A cable hooked as shown would tear up the wings and/or fuselage. The cable shown on the Phantom (grey jet) looks to be a tie-down cable - and it's not even the same type as would have been used at sea.
Why does it say code expired?
Same situation....

@@WorldofWarshipsOfficialChannel why is the answer with the new code hidden here at the bottom pint this as 1 comment above.
I wish there is some kind of custom scenario like in 13:22. some kind of custom scenario mission in WoW versus AI, where we must move in unison like protecting the aircraft carrier from incoming AI aircrafts and ships from all sides. if we lose the aircraft carrier, we lose the game, and we must move as one convoy to get the bonus credits or XP
would be pretty fun
ESSEX type was strong, all Japanese know ,but it mean that USA is Large Economy than Japan. Perhaps the Ship that some Japanese most respect is ENTERPRISE under William. F. Halsey . Because She fought against Japanese Navy on all time of Pacific War.
Okay !!! I was mistaken. There was a second ISS HORNET CV-12. MY BAD !!
Us navy: excellence and perfection meets beauty.
Tell that to the IJN
Inspirice I don’t think they can hear from the ocean floor
The Big E is the only Aircraft Carrier to smack down Hornet's record. At one point the Enterprise was the only US Carrier in the war til the new Essex class was built. So think of the Hornet (CV-12) as second place or runner up to the title of Great Aircraft Carrier. But remember this is the second Hornet the first one was sunk so you have to add that history to this Hornet. The Enterprise still lives on in parts that are mounted to the current Enterprise as goodluck
so hornet had four air squadrons? no wonder the game reflects the fact that USN CV have less squadrons than the IJN counterparts.
because russian bias
they have more aircraft carrier at the time
TheAllaksion for muther rusha
I wanna see Russian CV if there were any
Aiden Thomas there was only one and it was pretty shitty. Currently used by China I believe.

So blessed to have been on this bad boy

these launch procedures deserve a movie

I'VE BEEN ON IT! JUST LAST WEEK!
I've been to the Hornet museum many times. Excellent! I wish it were in san Diego, rather than the Midway. Too many obnoxious millennials working on the Midway

The one thing that really bothered me while watching this video, was the amount of work needed to the ship and aircraft.

Amazing engineering. Something that weights 36,000 tons can float, absolutely amazing!
They allow air to enter into it from laying the keel to every day going forward. Air happens every day.
I live near Alameda, I'll go see the Hornet someday
Hope you did
