@junpei6180 IDK I think Jill and The Phantom Theives just kind of have a similar fashion sense. Plus I haven't played Mighty Jill Off or Persona 5, so I had no way of knowing that Jill was unrelated to Persona.
It's definitely one of those games where the art carries it. Very simple, nothing too great but still isn't a terrible game. The story does absolutely explain why nothing came of this game or even the creator. A strange time honestly, when something like GG was still a thing.
Sounds more like a case of a bad relationship than anything resembling an abusive one. The BDSM stuff sounds completely outside of why the relationship broke down. Even if the game reminds them of that relationship, thats kind of outside of the media in question. Stories and works based off of things is like... the nature of fiction and works of art. Thats normal.
I mean right at the start they explain that this person did not EVER refer to them by their name, and only as "slut". That isn't.... okay. That's dehumanizing, degrading, and disrespectful.
@@tylociraptor8131 Listen, like I get what you are saying, but you are talking about two adults who where involved in a consensual long form BDSM relationship. @@tylociraptor8131 This was clearly consensual. My girlfriend literally owns me as property, and I'm okay with it and asked for it- are you going to try and be my knight and shining armor anyways?
@rrai1999 trust me, no one's trying to be your knight in shining armor lmao. It's the simple fact that someone was mistreated and dehumanized OUTSIDE of agreed confines and boundaries of the BDSM relationship (I've read her statement and she was definitely not okay with a lot of the stuff her gf did to her, and her gf was only concerned with getting herself off in the end.) Just because YOU are okay with something doesn't mean everyone in the same subculture would be.
The vibe I get from the posts cited about this situation is that painting the dev as some kind of malicious abuser here as some outside observers have is probably overstating the case, potentially greatly, particularly given how little we know about the other side of the story here… but I also completely understand why the person that Jill was partially based on was deeply uncomfortable with a character based on the dev's perception of them in that lousy relationship seeing a resurgence in popularity and why the dev might be reluctant to share her perspective on the situation and prefer to just move on entirely. People make art about people they love all the time, and sometimes those relationships turn out badly or were unhealthy or unbalanced or just plain crappy to begin with, and that can make that art a lot harder to engage with from an audience perspective or as someone involved in making it. But at the same time, it's worth bearing in mind that, as Doven points out, the other major contributor to the creation of character in question largely based his contributions to her design and how she was characterised in the cutscenes on someone else entirely, a close friend with whom he is still on good terms and whose agency and verve I think *does* translate through his artwork, so considering Jill purely as a reflection of the subtextual ugliness between the dev and her ex seems more than a little reductive to me? It's complicated, is what I'm saying.
The problem with separating art from the artist is continuing to buy and share their art is contributing to them having that public platform where they can promote their harmful ideology - eg. JK Rowling.
In JK Rowling case you can simply get a lot of their content by… *other* means if you don’t support them getting money. Though to be perfectly honest, I don’t think buying books or games really gives her as much money as buying memorabilia; mugs, shirts, limited edition wands, etc - much like Pokemon a franchises main source of income usually becomes things outside the “original” content. So using *other* methods or simply buying the bare minimum to continue enjoying the story is fine on my book, though that’s primarily my opinion
I remember learning about this game from Super Meat Boy I was curious were the character came from so I looked up the game I got curious why nothing else was done with the character so that’s how I found out the story behind it.
I remember knowing about this game through Super Meat Boy when I was still in Junior High. I looked it up, watched some videos, and thought, “Cool! More indie game stuff!” So this was a total jumpscare. Both seeing the game being talkes about and the story.
Another interesting talking point spawned from this is the intersection of ethics and personal freedoms. BDSM inevitably involves degredation of some kind. It just comes with the territory. In most contexts, this would be a textbook case of abuse. The difference is that consent was given and everyone wants this to happen. But that's not the end of the matter. Public faces have major indirect influences on others in a similar boat. Those that have more tame relationships will now be negatively compared to this one, which definitely isn't fair to them. It all boils down to if there is a point where slut shaming is necessary on a societal level.

While yes, I totally agree with the idea that you shouldn't suddenly move the goalpost on the works of someone just because they're unlikable as a person, there are MANY cases of learning that an artist holds a certain prejudice and then suddenly realizing it was always there. I know we've used the Rowling example to death, but examining the text both as an adult and after learning more about her, its become more obvious that despites Harry Potter's broad appeal with males and females, the books hold a death grip on Harry's boyish perspective to the point of shaping the narrative around it, and you realize that the only women shown a decent amount of respect are ALSO boyish, that Hermione isn't as strong willed and capable as you remembered. That Mrs McGonagall hardly gets any screentime and is often treated as a nuisance to Harry. Despite Rowling being a woman herself, and a self described radical feminist, its very obvious that Harry Potter was written with boys in mind, and that's largely because markets at the time believed that you couldn't market to girls, and that matters because we also have to benefit of hindsight to remember that the movie, game, and merchandising rights were sold incredibly early on, the series as a whole is mostly designed to be a product, and its kinda ironically marketing to girls that only people who do manly things are useful. Now for separating the art form the artist one this still remains true for Harry Potter, and Mighty Jill Off, and a lot of other works. That's the fact that despite the artist turning out to be a shitty person, and even despite the art itself potentially being shit as well, it was still effective art for the people who needed it. Even if Professor McGonagall and Hermione aren't written as well as we thought they were, they still ended up feeling that way to the people they ultimately resonated with. Though honestly... Molly Weasley what the hell man. She's a stay at home mom in a one income household that's fairly poor... BUT ALL HER KIDS GO TO A BOARDING SCHOOL MOST OF THE YEAR? And she like... magic ups the homestead to wash the dishes and dust... what the fuck does this woman DO? WHAT ARE HER HOBBIES?
