I miss Mike Portnoy...he played with such ferocity. Such fervor. And at the same time, being a backup vocalist. Multitasking with the hardest and most essential instrument in the whole band is like tightrope walking over a volcano; one wrong move and you’re in the dust. This is especially true with a band like DT. But he did it. And he did it well. I respect Mike for doing what he felt was best for himself and taking a break from the band, but I miss him nonetheless
I just think it's cute how Mike hugs James at 0:57 and they have some fun. Must have been a pretty emotional night, sold out 20 year aniversary concert with a full orchestra. It's a pitty DT will probably never be as good and inspired as this again

I was a huge DT fan. I was a Portnoy fanboy. After 10 years. Im here, still shivering for this piece. This is the real dance of eternity. Thank you Mike.
Portnoy gave DT's song so much heart, Mangini is incredible however he will never be able to contribute to the caliber of musical compositions that was delivered by Portnoy, and its so easy to identify just by listening to their last two albums compared to say something like Scenes from a Memory which I personally think is their finest piece of work. I feel like Dream Theater have now gone down the path of creating arguably almost too technically advanced songs and forgetting to add the magic like they always once did.
What I don't get is, why Mangini became so lame. I watched his audition video (the long version) and there he played with such power... Where the fuck has it gone?
@ Joubert Rouret Actually portnoy, Danney Carey, and Mike mangini have inspired me so much I added the buckets and practice pad I started out on to my kit. Just to have a bigger kit that looks like all the drummers I mentioned.
Here is why I believe Portnoy is better than Mangini.. Mangini is like listening to a teacher talk about Hemingway while Portnoy is more like actually reading it .. His stuff is elegant.. The drum fills he creates are much more interesting, entertainment and dynamics wise, simply put, it's fun to listen to him. For me personally, it's a treat to decipher the hit patterns in his compositions.. Excellent use of rests (silence).
The thing bout Dream Theater is, it needs fucking bad ass drums and Magini is not a bad ass player. He might be able do play faster than Portnoy with one hand but he hasn't his wibe and power. So speed isn't anything. Matt Garstka and maybe Thomas Lang are guys that plays with power that's equal to Portnoy's.
Mike portnoy music sounds like you enter a portal of space and time you don't know whats you going to listen too, but you feel the chills running through your body and heart it's very emotional music.

@Kalpataru A.I Mmg ngk gampang utk bisa move on dr MP.
Little-known fact (to some, anyway): DT would never play the same set twice in the same city or on consecutive nights, and it was Mike who kept track of every set to make sure that happened. Now, on their latest tour, they play the exact same set every night in every city. And it's best not to even bring up the quality of their last 3 or 4 albums.
So relaxed and in the zone - what a musician! Great music and great musicianship. Why do some people make fun of drummers? His exuberance and consummate ease makes me smile...especially given the complexity of the piece and the fact he is clearly enjoying himself never mind the role as beat master.
There’s a lot of things that set Mike apart from a lot of other drummers. However, I think one of the things that’s overlooked quite a bit as far as dynamic muscle has to be backup vocals. I know most people don’t think about that, but the ability to just do that while playing progressive music of any kind has to be applauded. And while he doesn’t exactly have some amazing lead vocal sort of flexibility, the fact that he not only is perfectly capable of it within the context of the music is just incredible. Off the top of my head, I don’t know of any other progressive drummer/metal/etc, that’s playing those sorts of arrangements and also adding that extra layer of complexity. Just, yeah.
As a drummer I fell in love early with Dream Theater and esp. Portnoy and his songwriting. People always told me, that I should listen to Jazz and play other stuff. I did. I spend hours, days and years on playing jazz, Latin and other stuff. But still this is THE shit.

Why can’t we just admit that both Mikes have different styles and both are just amazing as each other. Portnoy has great feel and could play in a jazz or metal band if he wanted to. Mangini is built a bit differently and likes to play more melodically using his drums and is a bit more crazy on time signatures. Both dudes are awesome and I have nothing negative to say. Concordo.
THE BEST EVER! Mike Portnoy rules lml
This is why Portnoy is the best drummer ever to live
Siapapun drummernya, nyatanya mereka tla berusaha mencari yg cocok, drpd tdk dpat ato malah bubar
@Kalpataru A.I Mmg ngk gampang utk bisa move on dr MP.
Tetep portnoy is the di DT tak terganti bro...
Salam kenal semuanya 😆😉
Probably the greatest song ever written with the greatest drummer ever in the greatest shirt ever!
8 years late, but I gotta say:
YOU ARE G O D D A M N R I G H T
No comparison needed. Mike Portnoy is the best of the best.
Last 2 albums are great.
Awesome, incredible, amazing. Thank you for sharing.
This song is really emotional..the legendary mike portnoy!!!
So relaxed and in the zone - what a musician! Great music and great musicianship. Why do some people make fun of drummers? His exuberance and consummate ease makes me smile...especially given the complexity of the piece and the fact he is clearly enjoying himself never mind the role as beat master.
How tf does he even remember to play all of this?? Absolute madlad :')
Just, yeah.
Been what this over and over again still epic!!!
13:59 jingle bells jingle bells jingle all the way
Seriously. The best drummer you will see in this lifetime. If you’re a drummer soak it up. Effortless.
I think you may be right, after going back and forth for ever...
Still loving this track even in 2020.
Mangini is very good but Portnoy amazing in my soul n heart, about his style and body language drumming, sounds, perfect emoticon
17:43 goosebumps every time this solo starts.
16:02 the Razor's Edge
Goosebumps...... a lot of goosebumps.......
As a drummer I fell in love early with Dream Theater and esp. Portnoy and his songwriting. People always told me, that I should listen to Jazz and play other stuff. I did. I spend hours, days and years on playing jazz, Latin and other stuff. But still this is THE shit.
2021 still watching...
La naturalezza di Portnoy è disarmante ❤
All those who have seen it...his comeback will bring the "majesty mojo" back. The balance is finally restored
I never wanted to become someone like him so secure
Content to live each day just like the last
I was sure I knew that
This was not for me
And I wanted so much more
Far beyond what I could see
So I swore that I'd
Never be someone like him
So many years have passed
Since I proclaimed
My independence
My mission
My aim
And my vision
So secure
Content to live each day like it's my last
It's wonderful to know
That I could be
Something more than what I dreamed
Far beyond what I could see
Still I swear that I'm
Missing out this time
As far as I could tell
There's nothing more I need
But still I ask myself
Could this be everything
Then all I swore
That I would never be was now
So suddenly
The only thing
I wanted
To become
To be someone just like him
A doctor sitting next to me
He asks me how I feel
Not sure I understand his questioning
He says I've been away a while
But thinks he has cured me
From a state of catatonic sleep
For 30 years
Where have I been?
Eyes open
But not getting through to me
Medicate me
Infiltrate me
Side effects appear
As my conscience slips away
Medicate me
Science failing
Conscience fading fast
Can't you stop what's happening
A higher dosage he prescribes
But there's no guarantee
I feel it starting to take over me
I tell them not to be ashamed
There's no one who's to blame
A second shot
A brief awakening
I feel the relapse
Can't break free
Eyes open
But not getting through to me
Medicate me
Infiltrate me
Side effects appear
As my conscience slips away
Medicate me
Science failing
Conscience fading fast
Can't you stop what's happening?
Sailing on the seven seize the day tripper diem's ready
Jack the ripper owens wilson phillips and my supper's ready
Lucy in the sky with diamond dave's not here I come to save the
Day for nightmare cinema show me the way to get back home again
Running forward
Falling back
Spinning round and round
Looking outward
Reaching in
Scream without a sound
Leaning over
Crawling up
Stumbling all around
Losing my place
Only to find I've come full circle
Flying off the handle with careful with
That axe Eugene gene the dance machine
Messiah light my fire gabba gabba
Hey hey my my generation's home again
Running forward
Falling back
Spinning round and round
Looking outward
Reaching in
Scream without a sound
Leaning over
Crawling up
Stumbling all around
Losing my place
Only to find I've come full circle
Our deadly sins feel his mortal wrath
Remove all obstacles from our path
Asking questions
Search for clues
The answer's been right in front of you
Try to break through
Long to connect
Fall on deaf ears and failed muted breath
Loyalty, trust, faith and desire
Carries love through each darkest fire
Tortured Insanity
A smothering hell
Try to escape but to no avail
The calls of admirers
Who claim they adore
Drain all your lifeblood while begging for more
Innocent victims of merciless crimes
Fall prey to some madmen's impulsive designs
Step after step
We try controlling our fate
When we finally start living it has become to late
Trapped inside this Octavarium [Repeat: x4]
V: RAZOR'S EDGE (19:59-24:00)
We move in circles
Balanced all the while
On a gleaming razor's edge
A perfect sphere
Colliding with our fate
This story ends where it began
Thancks ❤️
Mike Portnoy is the most epic musician to me... so sad about don't see him with Dream Theater.
Mike Portnoy best drummer...ever...for me.
Mike Mangini is a great drummer but, all the D.T. fans misses the genius that you are.
Still one of the finest songs this band ever produced
Ma vi rendete conto CHE CAZZO DI MUSICA HANNO SCRITTO E SUONATO questi fenomeni ? OCTAVARIUM poi è veramente un capolavoro !!!!!
16:21 damn, the chills man
i love mp and miss him in DT. grateful we have so much great music from that era
Amazing .....
More wine please.
I love Mike Shirt :D. Épic.
It's sad to see all of these comparison comments to MM and MP. Like give it a rest people, they are both happy and are loving what they do. They are not out to constantly please you.
Then why dont they move their instruments to their garage and keep playing there?
So many drum part and I love that's drum kit and love you mp
for the love of god. mr portnoy. blessed by god!!!!
They played 2 of their longest songs at this show, congrats to the audience
