    In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.

    The first video (or even in person discussion) that clearly explains how/why side scan is worthwhile. Thanks.

    Great video Kaleb. Very few good videos on catfishing and proper use of sonar. I have that exact same unit and couldn't imagine hitting the water without it anymore. These aren't like the old units where you just set it and forget it. You really need to make adjustments to your current fishing conditions. If your getting a new one the best thing you can do is get on the water and just play with it. You can't mess it up because there's a default reset. So you back to factory settings. Just try not to run in to anything because your staring at the screen and can't believe all the new info your learning. Also you'll find you enjoy fine tuning it because of all the details that will jump out at you.

      I couldn't have said it better myself Greg. Like you said, you have to adjust with the conditions for that day of fishing to get the best detail out of your fish finder. I hope someone is able to take this video and speed up that learning curve for identifying fish and start catching sooner! Thank you for the nice comment and best of luck to you on the water !

    I'm glad that at the end you specified 2D sonar only not being valuable in shallow water. Your video was on a shallow flat where you're correct in that 2d sonar won't show many fish due to little cone coverage. But 2d is still as valuable as ever in deeper water when cone can expand. It's also helpful in shallow water for observing bottom composition changes. Nonetheless, great video. I enjoyed it.

    Hey man, great video. Thanks for taking the time to spread some information on this relatively new technology. My Lowrance HDS 10 is less than six months old, so I am still learning a lot about how to use it for catching catfish. Finding structure for flathead fishing is the first accomplishment, and the side scan is "earning its keep" in shallow water. Excellent job...

    Now that i understand this a little better cause of your video that leads me to my next question. So lets say i see the fish off to the left side. How do i know where to cast to or how far out to cast? When you see the fish off to the left side of your SI do you just pick up a rod and start casting furiously everywhere to the left until one bites? Id like to learn how to home in on them when i see them on SI. Thanks

    • @kainhall
      @kainhall 8 років тому

      the numbers at the bottem of the screen tell you how far away said object is.
      so if your scanning out 60 feet to each side.... and its right in the middle of the left side return....
      then the fish is 30 feet left.
      to get depth.... make a mark point.... and go over said markpoint (or shift 30 feet left) and start using your traditional or down scan.....

    Hi there, thanks for your great video to explained how the side sonar works! I think i understand a little bit more about it.
    I have a 21ft boat that followed up a basic fish finder with Garmin echo 101 which provide me the basic 2d fish finder and button scanner for me to reference about fishing spot, but I just know how to use it to find structure under water, like underwater rocks or holes with some simple icon.
    After this I found there should be some way to improve, and saw those fish finder brand like Garmin, Lowrance etc having some new tech for finding fish but I nothing get how its working until this video.
    There some question for me about the side sonar as I heard you say this side imaging could be scan about 250ft deep but will be hard to see with a 10" screen, so is that not really work for deep waters?
    I saw you troll about 3-4mph seems it runs good! how about the max speed for scanning for those finder?
    Thanks.

    Have you ever used a deeper fish finder for catfish? I'm asking because I have a kayak I'm going to be targeting Flathead and blues out of and I want a side scanning sonar but can't quite afford one at this moment. Would you recommend using a deeper or just saving that Money and going ahead to purchase a side imaging sonar? I'm looking to land some trophy fish, but unsure of the fish finder I should invest in. I fish rivers and lakes. Rivers I can read well and land good fish, but lakes I have trouble finding the flatheads. Any advice I'd appreciate. Thanks!

    What settings do you have the SI enhance on? Meaning what is your sensitivity, contrast, sharpness etc? I just got a 1199 and had a 998 but I can't get the hardness to be that bright.

    • @mattcomchoc2957
      @mattcomchoc2957 9 років тому

      DEFMP10 i'd really like an answer to this question, too. the thing that's keeping me from stepping up to this technology is that when i see it in use, it is generally much harder to distinguish fish than on the particular unit you're showing in this video.

    • @kalebpage9331
      @kalebpage9331 9 років тому +3

      Hey DEFMP10! Sorry for the delay in responding back to your message. Your Humminbird comes out of the box set up well for finding fish from the beginning but you will have to adjust it as conditions change to get that excellent imaging. Normally I run my sensitivity on 8-10,Contrast at 10, and sharpness on off. Those settings change as conditions do tho. I make sure that I am at a nice slow speed keeping the boat straight. Also I keep my chart speed (the data that moves across the screen) to match my boat speed. Doing that not only keeps what you see accurate as to what is to the left or right of you but keeps the image clear. Your side imaging beam is a very thin beam from front to back and takes very thin slices of the bottom and sides. With the beam being thin from front to back it makes it hard on the beam to draw a crystal clear image on the screen if it cant keep up from you scanning to fast. So keeping your boat speed and chart speed around 3-4 mph will help create a nice clear image on your graph.Also your settings have a lot to do with what type of bottom harness you are around. If im in a rocky or gravel bottom I have to tun my side imaging sensitivity down to around 8. The reason for this is the beam when turned up is to bright hitting off the rocks and gravel and and can make it difficult to achive good clarity.Objects such as rocks are displayed as hard objects so you will need to adjust for that so its not blinding your view of seeing fish hanging off those rocks and the bottom. The sharpness is something that I use often as well. This is great when you are trying to highlight fish if you might be unsure. Usually for catfish I put it on low if I want to highlight them a little better, but for smaller fish you can turn that up to medium or even high to make that streak really stand out. You will notice that the the higher you turn up the sharpness the more it will distort the image and make it grainy. Sharpness you will notice kind of takes away from the overall image and highlights just the fish. So if you are looking for that crystal clear image then turning the sharpness down to low or off with make things a lot clearer. Also if you are scanning for cover on the bottom that may hold fish feel free to stretch that imaging range out 150ft on both sides but if you are only scanning for fish depending on what size screen you have keep it around 50-100ft of total scan. The reason for this is when you are scanning 300 total feet (150ft on both sides of the boat) it makes it hard for you to notice a a good fish in a 300ft span. If you back that down to around 120 total feet of scan you will be able to see those fish a lot easier and they will appear much larger on the screen getting your attention.That is something that will make your image more clear as well. I hope this helps you guys and feel free to let me know if I can help anymore! Kaleb
