  • On this episode of The Appraiser, Colin checks out a just-off-the-lot 2020 Ford Shelby GT 350R Heritage Edition, as well as a hot-rodded 1987 Buck Grand National GNX that definitely isn’t as new.
Will the owner of the GT 350 regret paying over MSRP for his flat-plane crank canyon carver or will he be pleasantly surprised by the market? Will the GNX with some (relatively) serious miles and mods on it do as well as the owner hopes or will Colin be making a correction to the owner’s way of thinking? As always, Colin’s got the answers to these questions and a lot more. Join him as he digs in to arrive at a value for both cars and then shares them with the owners. Will they agree with him? Will you? Sound off in the comments section and let Colin know!

If I'm being honest, I love the Buick GNX, probably more than the GT350R. But damn you just can't beat V8 and a manual transmission. The heritage edition really tops that car off. I do think someone will pay up for that GNX during the climate we are in right now, but I have a feeling that guy is definitely one of those "No low ballers, I know what I have" types of dudes.

That GNX only had 60,820 miles on it when it sold back in Oct 2001. You guys wouldn't believe on how cheap it sold for. I was going to bid on it but passed. I kick myself to this day. The car had terrible paint job . It looked like it had an inch of paint on it. I know the complete story on this particular car. He obviously hasn't driven it much in the last 21 years that's for sure. GNX 503 definitely has an interesting history.

The Mustang has half the production numbers, but is current to the crazy collector market. Many buyers of the GNX bought them and actually used them. Nearly all of the GT350R Heritage owners bought them and immediately made them garage queens.
They might follow similar trajectories in the future, considering they'll have similar rarity. However, the Mustang will suffer more with all that tech in it. The tech in the GT350 will become unobtainium far quicker than anything in the GNX.

I’ve been a Ford guy since high school, but I would absolutely take any Grand National over a modern Mustang. Performance aside, I just think the GN is one of the last of the original low-tech muscle cars.

Love the GT350R. Not paying double the original MSRP, though. Maybe some avid collector, or an idiot might think it’s worth paying that much for, but there’s a reason why there’s tons of these still on the market - hardly anyone is stupid enough to pay these ridiculous prices. Rather try my bid at getting a BRAND NEW C8 Z06 directly from GM for much less, but with much more performance.

87 GNX or a regular old 87 GN long before a 2020 mustang. Hands down no question. It's not a issue of what some UA-cam says the value is, it's history and we'll proven over a dime a dozen mustang...
I had a 87 Buick regal t type and know very well the existing rivalry

Just to clarify things for everyone. I bought that GNX in 2000 with 60k miles for $16,500. I sold my 12k mile 1 owner GN for $18,500 to buy the GNX. I was 26 years old with $2k cash in my pocket and a GNX, what did I blow the money on??? Performance modifications!! So yes I drive it like I originally intended to when I purchased it as a dream car that I was able to afford at the time. AND…. If you don’t appreciate a good Grand National burnout then you were born obviously after the car was made in 1987 and just don’t understand them. 😁

Hey, DesertAutoSport! Fun to see you here! I've seen your cars and auctions on BaT, but never heard the story behind the GNX! $16.5k for a GNX is just mind-blowing these days! I was 17 when my old man took delivery of our GN, so I definitely appreciated the epic burnout. It's awesome to see these cars getting driven instead of just stuffed in a dark corner somewhere with 200 miles on them. Thanks for sharing the car with the world!

I love the show, All the cars that have been featured are unique in their own way, but from my own perspective, when the info or tips come on display, they tend to go away very quickly and in several ocassions the host is pointing out something unique about the car being appraised, at that point, you either read the tip or look at feature of the car, in several times I had to rewind it to get a chance to catch both.
Also, another thing that I dont like much but understand, is that in every episode, before the owner comes back, the host says the same line “I know the appraisal and I am going to call the owner”. I know it is going to happen because it has to happen, I think there is no need to explain it and show it at the same time in every appraisal (twice per episode), all the episodes.
Those are my two cents, I hope it helps, either way… great show, I still enjoy it very much and I will continue to watch it!

Remembering back to the mid 90s home on leave completely smashed a friend I ran into told me he bought a gnX with some inheritance $. I didn't believe it was an actual X. So he took me to see it. It was legit can't remember the # think 236. He took me for a pretty intense cruise. Dropped me back off when he proceeded to to do a crazy burnout and launch where he lost control went over the curb hitting a guardrail and 🌳. The car was totaled 😔

Old sedan with a V6 auto vs an all-American, naturally-aspirated V8 with a manual. At first, I was shocked people would choose the Buick. On second thought, why even compare these two cars? What’s next? GMC Typhoon vs a Lamborghini?

Yeah the GNX is a fun car, but not worth the $150K the owner thought, the Shelby is a $150k car all day. If the Shelby gets driven and modded it may be even more fun and faster, but that is not where the money is. I will stick with my old truck and I can rod it, I can hill climb, I can drive it in the snow and mud and it is still worth not much. LOL Thank God there are rich people that can cherish these cars.

Never close the hood of a Buick TR the way you did its easy to dimple the hood at the hinge pushing down on it. Just drop it. The car was enjoyed . Keep driving it that's what cars are built to do.
