  • Colin Comer knows cars. And Colin Comer knows how much your car is worth! Join him as he appraises cars for owners who have (perhaps foolishly!) agreed to let him dig into their prized collector cars and do what he does best: find their true value AND put a number on it.
In this episode, Colin’s appraising a freshly built barn find 1970 Ford F100 pickup truck and an original-owner 1988 Lamborghini LM002 aka the "Rambo Lambo." The F100 is a full resto-mod build with a brand new 5.0 Coyote engine swapped into it yet no money was wasted on nice shiny paint here, folks, so you can leave your wax at home. The LM002 has been with the original owner since new and as he puts it, was a value proposition at the time as it was the “same price as a Countach. Twice the dead cows. Twice the doors and two transmissions.” Has time been kind to this Lambo two-fer?
Colin knows what these are both worth and now you will as well. Will the owners think he’s too low or too high? Do you? Sound off in the comments section!

I'm surprised how much more the appraisal is than what the owner thought on the F100. Almost never happens, lol. It sure is a great execution. Well done, subtle and the colors work very well. As for the LM002: Wow. Probably the cleanest 1-owner example in existence. About 10 years ago, I saw one at a shop in California that the owner thought would be cool to do with Escalade headlights and some other tasteless mods. It was unsettling, to say the least. So good to see one as God, or at least Lamborghini, intended.

There was a black LM002 at a local import garage for quite a while, as well as a Laforza! My estimate of the LM002 was nearly spot-on, but my Ford pickup number was around $60K.

That truck although very well done is no where near where they estimated. I thought $60k as well.

The well done resto mod/pro touring f100s and c10s are binging 150k+ at auctions now, it seems high because a rust free roller short bed is still only worth about 10k to get the project started, but none the less that's what they bring done. Think it's a combination of the popularity from the fast and loud show and now the covid supply chain issues/ inflation on top of that.

Even in the bubble of everything we are in currently in and auction silliness i would doubt that truck would pull $150k ..Custom/modified normally never get what is invested in them ,they are not collectable. Appraiser should be more conservative . The lambo on the other hand is a true collectable .

That truck should be in the 20s it's just a crate engine and a few suspension add ons. It's like the internet is jacking the price up on everything now. A stock 1990 volvo wagon sold the other day for 36k dollars.

@@slowrunner1660 that was my thought. I was thinking $40k, up to MAYBE $60k tops if he were to find the right buyer. I’ve worked at two high end shops, one primarily a hot rod shop, and the other a concourse restoration, on top of owning my own hot rod shop.

I knew I would find this post, and I totally agree that $150-170k for that truck is ridiculous. I was honestly thinking $40-60k. Its certainly a nice build but its just not special enough to command that kind of money.

For example, I imagine some appraisers are more familiar with certain genres over others. Also, what are some of the tips for having your car appraised.

Hi, All! Thanks for watching the first episode of "The Appraiser" and for all of the great comments. To answer the most common one, the much debated value of the 1970 F100 on this episode, I agree it seems unlikely something like that could be worth so much money.
But as I mentioned on the show the value of such a machine, for the person who wants to own one, is based on what it would cost to duplicate. In this case you'd be hard pressed to find a donor short bed, original paint very straight and rust-free F100 as nice as Jim did for less than $20k these days. Add to that just a Gen 3 Coyote crate engine from Ford, with the PCM and harness to run it, is $13k alone...plus the transmission...suspension..brakes...interior etc and you can see where the parts are easily over $40k. Now let's add in the labor at a pro shop such as the one that built Jim's truck. That's a minimum of 1,500 hours at a prevailing average shop rate today of $100/hour= $150k+ Therefore you can see the replacement cost would well exceed $200k, not to mention the time to manage such a build. Given that, the fact that I have seen a number of similar trucks sell for well over $100k at auction, and the fresh build and high quality of Jim's truck led me to my $125k appraised value. Far less than it cost to build and, hey, it is just a bad ass machine that has "the look" and was a hoot to drive.
In fact, the day before this episode aired, a 1968 F100 that was an older build in a similar style to Jim's truck (but an automatic...and I don't know how to drive those) sold on Bring a Trailer for $127,777 all-in with the $5k buyer's premium. So if Jim decides to sell in this market I maintain my number will be pretty damn close!
Now, as for the LM002....holy crap do I want that truck! I owned one in 1997 and have regretted not keeping it since I sold it. Of course, as one of you so accurately pointed out, they aren't $50k anymore either. Sigh. Maybe I'll just go buy a Ferrari jacket and an Alfa hat instead. Or not.
Thanks again for watching and keep the comments coming! Remember, too, a new episode hits the Hagerty channel every Friday at 10am CST!
    -Colin

For a moment I thought the owner of the F100 truck was none other than Walter White. I also think that even he had trouble believing the valuation based on his body language! I think the owners estimate of 80k is much, much closer to the mark.
The Rambo Lambo on the other hand if off the charts cool, and I think a 300k+ estimate is quite realistic given the market for old V12 Lambo's at the moment, not to mention its coolness and rarity.

If that Lamborghini is family, it's got a face only only a mother could love! It's a $350,000 dune buggy that you can only take to buy groceries or to church.
The Ford f-100 resto mod is nice and all, but I'm not a fan of the original paint color nor the garish color combination of that interior with the bronze trim and wheels. Wheels. Maybe somebody likes it but good luck getting $125,000 for it. He says he's not in it to sell it, and that's a good thing. Be fortunate to get what he put into it back out of it when he sells it. If he sells it.
All that negativity expressed, I do like the show. Hopefully they'll be something come along that floats my boat aesthetically. These two vehicles are beside the point for me. I'm glad they've got owners and fans. To each his own.

Addendum to the side fact plate at 4:30 while Ford overtook Chevrolet as the highest volume selling truck, one must remember a couple of niche facts that Ford willfully omits. The biggest being the fact that Chevrolet and GMC are separate brands for this statistic. When put together, Chevrolet and GMC make up more than half of domestic light truck production. Ford's 36% statistic here reflects that Lincoln did not produce light trucks, and even today Lincoln production trucks are a very small portion of their pickup sales.

Ford does nothing for me; faux patina? No thank you. But the LM002? Wow! Always loved them. That vehicle is barely run in! Just a different class to the Ford; nothing false about it: true Italian patina!

I was literally thinking 325k for the LM-002, and when he said those exact digits I had to do a double take

First class workmanship on that pickup, especially suspension & drivetrain. But I just can't see spending the cubic dollars on a $2000 field basket where your head rides 6' off the ground.

125K for the truck, I disagree...
    80K is tops...

Factory frame with crown vic swapped front end.
      = cheap
      Factory frame with QA1 suspension
      = not as cheap
Roadster shop chassis + Coyote + interior =
Maybe $100,000 to $130,000 then but because there is absolutely nothing special about the chassis this truck is not worth anywhere near the $125g.

@@muffpipe84 or just sit the body on a srt viper truck frame and be done with it for like 12k. For 100k maybe if one of the low rider guys built it where the whole underside it's chromed out and artwork etched on all the metal gold plated bumpers and stuff too

I'm still blown away when he says @ auction possibly $150,000 - $175,000
The guy just keeps spit balling numbers but in reality nothing ads up.

Well for the ford I'm from Europe so we don't have the truck culture here nor we have any nostalgic value for old trucks so it is worthless to me. But the LM002 on other hand that is one rare beast. Is it good off-roader I don't think so. Is it cool to have/own just to look at it. Hell yea!

So many people with money that own exotics have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to cars. Good on them for taking care of vehicles, but not the kind of people that are fun to hang out with in the car scene.
