Burt Reynolds or James Bond? 1976 Pontiac Trans Am or 1962 Aston Martin DB4? | The Appraiser - Ep. 2

  • On this episode of The Appraiser, Colin appraises a 50th Anniversary Pontiac Trans-Am that’s never been restored and an Aston Martin DB4 that has been fully restored and looks like it. So yes, while the Bandit didn't drive a 1976 Trans-Am (it was a 1977) and James Bond didn't drive a DB4 (it was a DB5) we feel things are close enough to make this a Bandit vs. Bond showdown. Or Coors vs. Martini, if it's 5 o'clock where you are right now. In any event you can't get much different than these two rides, well, other than both share their own (loose) connection to two of the best problem eliminators in movie history.
So watch along as Colin digs in to arrive at a value for both cars and shares them with us- and the owners. Will they think he’s too low or too high? Do you? Sound off in the comments section!

Hi Everybody- thanks for watching E2 of The Appraiser! I'm excited to have it here and hope you all enjoy it.
Just to clarify- the Bond vs Bandit thing is us having some fun and taking a bit of liberty as mentioned in this video description that is posted above:
"On this episode of The Appraiser, Colin appraises a 50th Anniversary Pontiac Trans-Am that's never been restored and an Aston Martin DB4 that has been *fully* restored and looks like it. In any event you can't get much different than these two rides, well, other than both share their own (loose) connection to two of the best problem eliminators in movie history."
Keep the comments coming, and remember to come on back for new episodes right here every Friday...well, until we run out and need to shoot some more that is!

Nice review. I have a similar original condition 1976 LE Trans Am, 455 4spd, (no Hurst hatches). It has similar factory flaws - fingerprints in the paint and the pinstripe decal on the chin spoiler is upside down. Original exhaust with the same black exhaust tips which a TA "expert" told me never made it to production. Car was shown at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals a few years back. Hagerty had a difficult time valuing it back when I got it in 2007 as there was nothing like it in their database.

From an experienced detailer I can say with 90% surety that the handprint is likely sunscreen. That's what it does to paint. I can just picture someone just having applied it one gorgeous day at the beach and then leaning on the car with their greasy sunscreen hands. The higher the SPF, the worse it is.

Fun fact: Many of the Trans Ams in "Smokey and the Bandit" were actually '76 models fitted with '77 front ends, since most of the movie was filmed in the summer of 1976 before the '77 models were released to the public. Apparently, the studio made a special deal with GM to purchase the '77 front end assemblies which of course included the new elastomeric housing, grille inserts, and four square headlights, and this was done before any of these parts were available through dealerships.

The 1970's and early 80's were the worst for GM build quality. I had a 1975 Camaro I order special from the factory and when it was delivered it had a about a one foot diameter paint blemish in the roof and the gas gage didn't work and the ashtray was the wrong color. After those defects were corrected at the dealer about 300 miles later the front wheel bearing failed and on inspection it was never greased at the factory and being a four speed car the factory shifter would lock the transmission in two gears ( usually first & reverse ) on a regular basis. Another thing tat was annoying was the factory installed Goodyear white letter steel belt radials all failed ( the rubber split with the steel belts showing ) at less than 5000 miles because they weren't guaranteed above 80 mph.

I would like an episode where you go over all the cars on the lift behind you in these episodes. Since the movie Smokey and the Bandit helped sell so many Trans Ams for Pontiac the head of Pontiac told Burt Reynolds that he never needed to buy another car ever again as long as it was a Pontiac. A few years later the head of Pontiac left and since he didn't have it in writing he said he only ever got one free car.

On the one hand you've got the Bandit, a good ol' boy that managed to snag Sally Fields. On the other hand you've got James Bond, a British spy - who by the time 1977 had rolled around, had enjoyed a bevy of gorgeous women ranging from Ursula Andress to Barbara Bach. A 1977 Pontiac Trans Am ('76 close enough) and an Aston Martin DB5 (DB4 close enough) were perfect vehicle choices for these two characters. (With all due respect to the always adorable flying nun.)

I like the vids your doing. However as a car freak and a painter and a paint tech rep some of that paint doesn't look factory. I see some panels and places are quite a lot of peel but others look like flat sanded and buffed lacquer. Seats look way to good to be ages even if cared for properly. Very nice piece but sus to me. Trunk jamb and under trunk is sooo glossy. Never mil gauged a classic like that but is 2.5 mil typical of a single stage finish? Or were they closer to 4-5 and it's from age and buffing. Thanks for vid. Not trying to attack or hate on you.

    • @cobracolin
      @cobracolin 2 роки тому

Hi, thanks for watching! The T/A is absolutely original factory paint, I metered every panel and also, like you, have been painting/ restoring cars for a while- 37 years actually. The camera tends to make things look different on the screen but I assure you the decals and paint are factory applied. And yes, typically factory single stage is around 2.5 mils on the exterior while the jambs are 1.0-1.5 on a lot of stuff from Detroit of the era. The interior is all original as well- remember this is a 14k mile car with full owner history that David has owned for 20 years and put on 5k of those miles. It's legit. Thanks again for the comment! -Colin

What's up with those honeycomb wheels, I swear I could push on the honeycomb and they would give like very hard rubber? I've never been able to find out anything about them, or anyone else that noticed it. Am I the only person that pushed on them?

honestly this show at WCCS would be cooler, but then again it is an active business.

I would much rather have the Aston Martin. I guess that may surprise people because when I was young I walked around wearing a white cowboy hat and boots.I think that we always want the things that were not common to us because they seem more exotic. I have seen more firebirds than I could ever even hope to count.

No contest, Aston Martin by a country mile if not ten. The Trans Am is certainly cool though but not in the same class.

Hal Needham is actually the one who wanted the Trans Am for Smokey and the Bandit. Burt Reynolds read the script and thought it was trash. The only reason he even did the movie was a personal favor to Hal...

"Factory air conditioning" "really cool" Not sure 70's GM A/C works well enough to deserve that description. ;)

Actually, oddly enough, that Harrison/ Frigidaire A/C running on R12 would blow ice cubes. A lot of other manufacturers used it as well as a result. For example Jaguar, Rolls, Bentley. It was indeed the gold standard in A/C.

@@adotbeck good point. I should have said "when it was working" because it wasn't immune to the overlying GM issues of quality control of the day :)

  • @beauxr.benoit1374

Wrong year for the Firebird. The one from Smokey and the Bandit was after the car was redesigned to have D.O.T.D. mandated bumpers in ?1974?. This car is from that year, I think. The Aston is nice, and I like the color. But it is not silver like in the movie or in dark green, which is the international racing color for Britain.

they said this was "not a smokey"..this car was made a year before the movie...they stated this near the beginning of the video

In stock condition the Trans Am engine would be a snot pump with an output of less than 200hp.
