LARA had Greenidge, Haynes, Richards, Richardson, Hopper, Dujon playing around him when he averaged in the 30's over his first 30 test matches. Richards averaged 60 over his first 30 matches spread over 6 years facing the liked of Lillee Thompson, Gilmore, Hog. Hadlee of the long run, Willis, Botham, Snow, Imran Khan, Kepild Dev, Sarfraz, Bedi, all the top spinners in the 70's Lara didn't have to face this calibre of bowling and played on far less responsive pitches.
@@geelb-fe7ef That is the truth. His behaviour and attitude was so bad in his record breaking season in the UK nobody wanted to sign him. Some of the stories coming out of Warwickshire were bewildering.

Ever since then I've labeled him a fine batsman with a really shitty personality. I can just imagine the amount of sulking and backstabbing it took for him to be made captain

Lara is an All Time great and could definitely land in that # 1 spot just a matter of perspective. The generation that saw Sobers play, would put him above Lara and Sir Viv.
@EdwinSmith-c2x Vivian Richards better than Lara. What's the point making a ton of runs and not win test matches? He made all them runs for himself not the team.
Lara was ahead of Viv in my opinion and I grew up watching Viv .... Lara had more range as a batter and a desire to score big. Viv was utter destruction for bowlers in a time when aggressive batting wasn't as popular
I love it all , I agree with your top 10 , I happened to watch Australia against West Indies in in Jamaica and remember watching Michael holding and Viv
Shivnarine Chanderpaul 5:05 it’s such an underrated player. It sucks that the West Indies cricket board did him dirty despite his trials and tribulation; he continues to shine 🐅
In many circles Bradman was called " the white Headley" which speaks for itself. Headley played in very weak West Indies teams so chances of scoring more runs or high scores were limited, pitches were uncovered, he was immortal or double immortal at Lords and if memory serves me correctly had the highest average among the top 10 batsmen mentioned. As far as I am concerned the top 2 WI batsmen of all times rests between Sir. Garfield Sobers and George Headley. Greg Chappell rates Sobers as the best of all times and Bradman endorsed same after seeing Sobers innings of 250 captaining the Rest of the World against Australia which team included Dennis Lillie who congratulated Sobers after the innings saying that he heard about him but very happy to have seen him.
Wow thanks for sharing such great information and building the discussion. This is the reason we make content, to hear such great stories. Thanks for being a part of the community 🙏
Definitely VIV is number one . There are batters who has much better numbers. But, when this man from the time he come from pavilion bring all the charm to your eyes. No nonsense approach, stylish, and very aggressive. You will rarely see him stepping out from the crease. All time entertainer.
In my opinion, the greatest batsman ever to play for the W.I was the flamboyant Sir Viv Richards. He played at a time when Lillee and Jeff Thompson from Australia were at their frightening best. This pair dominated world cricket for a long time; however , it was only Sir Viv who smashed them all over the place.
Thanks for putting this detailed analysis together. It helps put things in perspective using data and situational team perspective. Greenidge would have been higher on my list. Amazing batsmen and really nice guy I got to meet in Barbados at the Oistins Fish Market of all places. I tried to model my batting style from his. Cheers
@@thereversescoopUSA Yes the inclusion of Chris Gayle, I really like the unique record of a test triple(2), an ODI double and the twenty/20 international century only batsman in the world to achieve the feat.
Sir Vivian Richards was unique and dominant on the field he could demolish the opposition bowling with ease. Just keep in mind Brian Lara was someone who sets records and dominated with top scores of 277 vs Australia and his 400 vs English stands out as a remarkable record.
I am old enough to have watched Sir Garfield Sobers Bat at Sabina Park and his stroke play was unmatched! He was an all-rounder whose spin could make a a batsman swear that the ball stopped in mid-air and reversed itself. His only failure in my mind was that he was not a team leader like Sir Frank Worrell, Clive Lloyd, or even Sir Vivian Richards, because he gave the impression that he was at a social level above the rest of the team. But then Lara was even worse as a leader. However, Sir Garfield as a batsman, was a master in a class of his own.
I respect your video and the list was good, showing that for a man living several generations deep into the history of Cricket, you have done impressively at research. I would only have included about 6 of your 10.
Brian Lara is by a long way the #1 batter. He played in an era dominated by great spin bowlers that would mesmerize RICHARDS and others. Lara #1 always. Richards #2
@@vantywilliams4507 thanks for sharing your thoughts. Lara and Sir Viv are both interchangeable at the top spot. Both achieved so much in their careers.
brian at 2 was intended to rack up the comment … there’s no way viv is better than… he broke the world record twice , the best player of spin bowling ever…there’s most centuries and double centuries… i can go on and on
I endorse your pick for the number one position wholeheartedly. VIv's onslaught resulted in wins for West Indies through his revolutionary approach. Lara's accomplishment was quite personal.
My top 10: The top four positions are to close to call between; Headley Sobers Viv Lara 5 Weekes 6 Walcott 7 Worrell 8 Grenidge 9 and 10 can be argued between; Chanderpaul Gayle
The overwhelming factor in all this is how was the team doing on the world stage at the time these players were active highs and lows if a guy were predominantly successful during the period of when the team was in dire straights yes automatically ahead of the guy who had a more easier time to produce
I'm on the opposite spectrum here. Sure, the team in the 80s was better team, but the impact the runs made led to that dominance, Lara though carried a team in a difficult time, but his runs in my opinion weren't as impactful as Sir Vivian's. That's why for me he is ahead of Lara. But I get your pov. Thanks for your feedback. Let us know your thoughts on our other West Indies rankings.
Sir something wrong with your head I'm trying my best to be respectful this list is garbage talking about playing under pressure for all them years breaking the record TWICE and this is your list😮 SAD .... anyway my TOP 10 OF All TIME BRIAN LARA 1 TO 10 and EVERYONE AFTER.
If we're talking of the pressure of propping up the batting on his own can you compare Brian Lara who also had Chanderpaul, Hooper, Adams, etc. with George Headley who was called 'Atlas' because he was the only one propping up the fledgling😂 West Indies batting. He played against the at that time extremely powerful England and Australian bowling and ended with an average of 60. And it would have been in the 70's if he had not played after World War 2 when he older and not fit. How can he be at 7 in your list and not in the top 3-4. Do you remember what the West Indians who saw him bat said about his being called the 'Black Bradman'? That Bradman should be called the 'White Headley'!
I have Viv also as the greatest batsman for the west Indies simply because he could handle pace bowling better than Lara I also think that Lara was better than Viv against spin and medium pace but Viv was just better against pace bowling and never really seemed to be troubled by the fast bowler but Lara was hence the fact that he got hit on numerous occasions unlike Viv simple
Sir Gargield Sobers 28, 314 runs. Brian Lara 10, 405 runs, Sir Vivian Richards 6,721 runs. Clearly by A Cricket Mile Sir Garfield Sober is the West Indies #1 Batsman on this list. 😅😅😅
It's a generational thing. My, late, Dad - born in the late 1930's - would say Sobers. And, because, he saw, BOTH, Sobers and Richards, I wouldn't disagree with his opinion. However, VR was 'otherwordly.'. His performance throughout 1976 was unreal. IF, Vivi had hit a Yorker for 6, NOBODY would've been surprised! And, his ability to intimidate, even, the best bowlers was second to none (Imran khan said he was intimidated by Vivi!).
@@barjumbo1969 Not generational, for superior talent manifests itself in any era. If I were to pick the greatest batsman ever, besides Bradman, it would be Dr. Grace. He was as talented and a greater intellect for he invented modern batting. He was bigger physically, more powerful, and didn't need to chew gum to stare down and intimidate opponents. My top 3 West Indian batsmen remain the same, but hovering over them all, and with the charm of the born diplomat, is Worrel.
Agree with your list except that Greenidge is ranked a little too low. I think he deserves to be at 6 or 7. However, Viv is the best. Maybe All Time across World cricket.
My choice of best WI batsmen: 1. Brian Lara (preferred over Richards for him carrying the burden of batting almost solely unlike Richards) 2. Vivian Richards. 3. Clyde Walcott 4. Shivnaraine Chanderpaul 5. Garyfield Sobers 6. Gordon Greenidge 7. Everton Weekes 8. Frank Worrell 9. Rohan Kanhai 10. Alvin Kalicharan
Happy that it is YOUR point of view. My point of view is that BC Lara is by a very very long way #1 . He was stylish, had a good cricketing brain, prolific in run scoring and the most domineering batter of high quality spin bowling, equally good with all the pacers he faced. He has no parallel. Not at all.
@thereversescoopUSA In my opinion Richards can't gain number one accolade by just touting that he faced fast bowlers. Top wicket takers in the cricketing world are spinners who mesmerized all top class batters, but which Lara handled with disdain. I go for Lara everyday.
How come a batsman who holds two world records is not considered as # 1. This is like saying Usain Bolt is not the greatest sprinter of all time. Total madness.
If you only look at stats, then yea. But when looking at impact, legacy, and stats, this is what we came up with. Plus, comparing a Usain Bolt record to cricket records is not a fair comparison. Sprinting is done keeping playing conditions in a controlled environment for cricket, conditions, and other factors such as pressure, quality of bowling, team balance etc.. comes into play.
The list shows lack of knowledge of our cricket history. Clyde Walcott was arguably the best batsman of the 3 ws . Must be included in the top 10. George Headley must be top 5.
Thank you for your feedback. Clyde Walcott sure was a tough miss for me, he is number 12 for me. Though he tops our wicket keeper batsman list for the West Indies. George Headley arguably could have been top 5 here, but the lack of test cricket hindered me, placing him higher.
Rowe was a tough miss. But not to worry, we are dropping our next rankings later this week. You will find Lawrence Rowe in there. Be on the lookout for that episode drop.
Rowe scored a double and a single century on debut against New Zealand. The triple century came later against England in Barbados. Get it right before typing next time.
Viv was destructive but Lara was supreme!!! Hard to believe Clyde Walcott and his 15 Test centuries and 56.68 Ave could did not rank in your Top Ten. Glad to see that you gave the legendary George Headley who dominated in the pre-World War II racism filled era his due props. Headley's number 7 ranking is low when considering the number and frequency of Test matches in his era were limited by the relative fewer Test playing countries compared to today's ICC globally expansion.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and yea, Walcott probably could have made, as well as Gayle, Desmond Haynes. It's a tough task to choose just 10..lol Hou are on point about headley, he definitely should have been in top 5.
I hear you but Rowe's career was not long enough. He accomplished some great things in a short period of time but if he'd had a longer career then he would definitely would have been right up there. Joining the rebel tour to South Africa was a bad move. Another problem he had was his allergy to grass, which often affected him while he was playing.
Vi v Lara Khanai Weekes Kallicharan Greenidge Sobers Headly Chanderpaul Rowe This is a tough list to put together There are so many honorable mentions. Off the top of my head that's my list
Absolutely a very difficult task. But this is a solid list and yes so many honorable mentions. Chris Gayle, Alvin Kalicharan, Carl Hooper, Desmond Haynes, and on and on..lol
Those who saw Garfield Sobers bat said he was by far the best left-handed batsman, way better technically than Lara. Lara is known for playing great innings but there was alot of failures amongst those great innings. His backlift was to pronounced and when out of form he looked pretty average. He played in a 5 mtch series in SA where Donald had him rattled to the extent he got him out standing on his stumps. Whereas with Sobers and Richards who often got bored and got themselves but were never dominated by any one bowler in their respective era's the very best bowlers like Mcgrath, Donald and Akram caused Lara great difficulties. Lara was an exceptional player of spin which skewed his record somewhat and he picked on a lacklustre English attack as well so i would have Lara at 3, Richards at 2 and Sobers at 1
lara was susprct to great fast bowling, thats whe he batted so low in the order. viv took great fast bowlers by the scruff of the neck and destroyed them. ___ ask thompsom and lillie.
Yu mad Lara is #1 , 2 time test record holder. I think Chris Gayle could find his way in. Remember you are looking at all three versions of the game. Chris is way ahead in T20 . Averages not worst off. And since you mentioned Sobers all round ability Gayle is not too bad in that department. How many other WI batsmen have scored triple centry.
I'm with you just about 100% agree, names and order. If we stuck with the original 10 names then Lloyd would be in for Walcott at eight. Both those guys were greats, scoring some tough runs against formidable bowlers.
IVA Richards was to cricket what Mohammed Ali was to boxing. Fraser was stronger but Ali made it mental art. No West Indian batman was as gifted BC Lara, none... but Richards presence as a batsman was a collosus.
Let's not fall in the trap of interpreting our cricketing history by mere numbers. It was waaaay more than that and Richards led with his bat and his regional pride...

Richards averaged 60 over his first 30 matches spread over 6 years facing the liked of Lillee Thompson, Gilmore, Hog. Hadlee of the long run, Willis, Botham, Snow, Imran Khan, Kepild Dev, Sarfraz, Bedi, all the top spinners in the 70's
Lara didn't have to face this calibre of bowling and played on far less responsive pitches.
Lara had a great team then proceeded to ruin that great team with his selfish behavior and leadership
@@geelb-fe7ef That is the truth. His behaviour and attitude was so bad in his record breaking season in the UK nobody wanted to sign him.
Some of the stories coming out of Warwickshire were bewildering.

I attended a function at a high commission in London to honor the WI team back in the 80s. The team, Commissioner, sporting dignitaries the public and press were all present with food and associated refreshments waiting for Lara. He showed up when it was almost over with a blonde floosey complete with plastic implants showing disdain and disrespect to his teammates and the public choosing only to fraternize and engage one racial demographic of the gathered press. Ever since then I've labeled him a fine batsman with a really shitty personality. I can just imagine the amount of sulking and backstabbing it took for him to be made captain
* Spin playing*, range of shots, ability to pierce fielders, Lara all the way. Richard's best on on-side, pulling and hooking.

Lara was ahead of Viv in my opinion and I grew up watching Viv .... Lara had more range as a batter and a desire to score big. Viv was utter destruction for bowlers in a time when aggressive batting wasn't as popular
Lawrence Rowe was the most beautiful. Batsman of all time. But he did himself in when he cut his career short by going to South AFRICA.

Viv Richard is my number one for sure
Shivnarine Chanderpaul 5:05 it’s such an underrated player. It sucks that the West Indies cricket board did him dirty despite his trials and tribulation; he continues to shine 🐅
He was a great test batter in a time West Indies needed.
In fact, Headley's record on uncovered pitches was BETTER than bradman's. GH was immortal.

He played against the at that time extremely powerful England and Australian bowling and ended with an average of 60. And it would have been in the 70's if he had not played after World War 2 when he older and not fit. How can he be at 7 in your list and not in the top 3-4.
Grace. My point of view is that BC Lara is by a very very long way #1 . He was stylish, had a good cricketing brain, prolific in run scoring and the most domineering batter of high quality spin bowling, equally good with all the pacers he faced.
He has no parallel. Not at all.
Lara actually struggled against quality fast bowling in his era. Can you say the same for Viv? He dominated the best fast bowlers of his era.
@thereversescoopUSA
In my opinion Richards can't gain number one accolade by just touting that he faced fast bowlers.

Glad to see that you gave the legendary George Headley who dominated in the pre-World War II racism filled era his due props. Nice. Thanks for adding to the discussion. Some good points.
