Gower was slaughtered by the press for the declaration. But he really couldn't be faulted: it was just sublime Greenidge, batting like a man possessed, who was responsible for the result. Until the time Greenidge walked into bat for the second time, England had made a match of it.

Nice to see how competitive England were against this West Indies team -in some tests at least. Gower's declaration was brave and not seen as reckless at the time, just as an honest attempt to win a test match.
Greenidge and Gomes showed how 4th innings batting was done. Also a reminder that Ian Botham had a cracking series in 1984, huge wickets and I think 4 fifties, at least as good as 1981 but against a far better team against whom, one great player on fire could not turn the tide, hard though he did try.

These english guys were too over-rated in those days by their own media and used to keep boasting about themselves.... and when the real test came, courtesy West Indians, these buggers started crying.... Had these bowlers been there today especially against the likes of Tendulkar, Sehwag, Laxman, Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh, these very great bowlers would have got the taste of their own medicine.... I remember that innings by Greenidge . It was great but very selfish . He had made his double century and instead of allowing Gomes to complete his century he kept on attacking as if to deny Gomes a deserve 100. Very selfish
