  • Tower of London to Wapping - London's Best Riverside Walk.
This is one of my favourite riverside walks which takes in some lovely old historic pubs too along the river Thames.
Starting at The Tower of London see Dead Man's Hole underneath Tower Bridge where dead bodies used to wash up.
Then past St Catherine's Dock where Shackleton departed Britain for the last time and down Wapping High Street. Then take a look along the shore of the River Thames where you might go mudlarking and find a Tudor shoe or some other ancient artifact.
Continue to the Town of Ramsgate Pub and learn the history of Judge Jeffreys, the hanging judge and where Captain Bligh had his final drink with the crew of The Bounty.
Past Wapping Pier Head and then to Execution Dock and the Captain Kidd Pub and Thames River Police.
After that past Wapping Station and onto The Prospect of Whitby, one of the oldest riverside pubs in London called Devil's Tavern.
Then in Limehouse and past the London Hydraulic Company and Captain Cook's house which used to be the old Chinatown and inspired Sherlock Holmes, Fu Man Chu and The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde.
Then finish your walk at The Grapes where Charles Dickens used to drink and which features in Our Mutual Friend.

Our first flat in London was on Narrow Street: Duke Shore Wharf. Unbelievable location, unreal that we could (just about) afford here. The Grapes was our local, not that we frequented it, as we mostly drank in the City. We walked your vid's route not long after we moved in, and were absolutely blown away by the history on display, even if we knew none of it in those pre-smartphone days. That single walk set us up to become avid London walkers.

My friend and I did this walk yesterday . We started at Tower Bridge and then followed the river up to The Greenwich river under pass . We of course popped into those pubs on the way around for some light refreshment. But, we forgot to drink water to just survived on beer :-) It's amazing how all those little detours from the river around flats and buildings take so long. As you leave behind those lovely old former Victorian warehouses , further up the Thames you are confronted with some true monstrosities of building. Old Prince Charles would have a fit about the cheese grater architecture . Once through the tunnel, we then made our way back from Greenwich via Bermondsey , Deptford , Rotherhithe and then onto Tower Bridge. 15 miles in all and burning 2500 calories . LOL Great walk, love those Drake steps.

The London Hydraulic Power Company is most probably worth a video in its own right. They had their own system of high-pressure water mains throughout the City and the West End. They powered lifts and other machinery. The system was decommissioned June 1977. They powered apparatuses at the London Palladium, the London Coliseum and the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.

@Rose Theromani. You may already know this. I can remember a TV programme on The London Hydraulic Power Company being shown way back in the last century. I am sure that they said that the dance floor in The Savoy Hotel was lifted/lowered by hydraulic power from LHPC. And also the lifts in the original (Royal) London Hospital in Whitechapel were raised/lowered via water rams from below the passenger cars. Stay safe and well

My great aunts and grandparents lived in Wapping ,when I would go visit them as a kid in the 70's it was damage was still very visible . my last great aunt died last year ,and when helping to clear her flat out found so many photos of the area from before and after the war.
The area has changed so much from when i was a kid . the old fish and chip shop has gone and been replaced with a kebab shop , but still the bakery and butchers are still there . Sadly no more McGannon's though

I've seen the chunks torn out of the facade of the V&A Museum that were deliberately left unrepaired 'as a memorial to the enduring values of this great museum in a time of conflict'. Also marks left by bomb splinters at the back of St Clement Danes Church, and a big area north of St Paul's Cathedral (Paternoster Square) that was flattened, rebuilt in hideous modern style after the war, then knocked down and rebuilt again!

I've done this walk and can thoroughly recommend it. I did it even before seeing this video and walked from Canary Wharf tube to tower Bridge. You could make it last all day if you stopped for lunch at one of the many pubs and stopped for a tour of the Docklands Museum. Congratulations to whoever designed the docklands museum. Even though the building is old the museum setup is fairly new and absolutely brilliant. It is only about 1/4 mile from Canary Wharf.
Take your time and have a good look around. The walk is loaded with zigs and zags so don't rush. The highlight for me was walking along the river's edge at low tide. The Thames has a huge tidal range of roughly 10 feet.

I think you will find that Wapping (there is another one in Liverpool) comes from 'warping'. A warp is a ships rope and boats would be pulled up or down river to and from their births by rope from the shore...a sort of tow path.

@@Joolzguides That may be the reason for the name Wapping in Liverpool, but in London, Wapping apparently comes from Waeppa's People. Please refer to Madge Darby who lived and wrote many books about the area. BTW as a boy growing up in Wapping, the pub Captain Kidd was not there. This is a fairly recent conversion from the original buildings along the river. Great pub though, especially on a sunny day.

Hello Jools. Thanks for another great presentation. I love your vids and have watched them many times. I just wanted to say that I am a Ramsgate person. The port of Ramsgate was linked with London as until the railway became the mode of travel, the main form of transport was indeed the sea and up the river Thames. My grandad was a naval man and probably drank in the Town of Ramsgate pub! It’s probably more of a restaurant these days eh? Not the old drinking hole it once was (as are many pubs). Cheers geez, and thanks again for interesting content and thoroughly enjoyable viewing. Regards, Dave ✌️

Hi folks. If anyone likes my films and knows any journalists, tv companies or tour operators do let me know. I’m looking to collaborate or work together with these companies to get more exposure and potentially promote their business. Onward and upwards!!! Please help if you can!! Thanks! Joolz

I'm glad you told the Wapping story. I'd heard it before but you corroborated it for me. : - ) I'd never made the connection with the Burger King burger. Now i'll feel like I'm eating Soylent Green. They have currently stopped serving burgers except the meatless ones after processing plants shut down due to Covid 19.

The name and the place Wapping predates the the fact that bodies were found bloated in the river. In fact it is the other way around. Because these bodies were found in this part of the river in Wapping and bloated, they were referred to as Wappers/Whoppers. Hench the name. I'm from Wapping.

I hope this isn't churlish of me, Joolz, but I must correct you. Holmes was, of course, addicted to cocaine, not opium.
Still a thoroughly delightful film, as are all of your productions.
