The City of London (the financial part) is also known as the Square Mile, although it isn't actually a square mile... it's not even a square! Even though it looks mostly shiny and new with our little glassy sky scrapers, there are still the ancient, ancient pubs down tight alleys and beneath the older buildings that feel like you've gone back in time a five hundred years. They do great 'bitters' and incredible pies. Some of them actually feel like refurbished medieval dungeons too, like the lower levels of 'Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese'. Yes it is actually called that xD Btw, they are little Dragons on the Crest of London, Griffins have eagles heads (usually). I used to think they were Wyverns, but those only have two legs!!!
And go visit it on a weekend. It’s nearly deserted (it’s mostly companies and banks there meaning almost no one lives there). Incredibly busy on work days, awkwardly empty on weekends. It’s so strange, since it’s right in the middle of London, a city always incredibly busy.
The City of London is a seperate state outside of the UK where Corporate Law as we know it doesn`t apply. This is why most of the biggest banks and corporations in europe are registered there. Its also the biggest tax haven on the planet. As far as old tradition is concerned its also run by the Knights Templar Society which also controls the Middle Temple Law society and as you mentioned Old Bailey. Yes the Banking and Law are controlled from The City. I`m no conspiracy nut as you no doubt call inquisitive people who see through the total scam which is Western Society. So the whole of the UK is controlled by a fraternity of Gnostic Priests. Why the desperate cover up from all quarters.

If the London Mayor has no power over the City of London then how did Sadiq Khan manage to veto the 'Tulip Tower' project after it had been approved by the City of London Corporation?

@@stuartd9741 I get what you're saying but that would be a bit far-fetched IMO. It doesn't make much sense that they'd go through all that trouble to project a false narrative that the London Mayor has power over the City of London when he doesn't in reality.

@@stuartd9741 Taken from The Guardian: The scheme had initially received the go-ahead but Khan dashed the hopes of its designers, Foster + Partners, on Monday. “The mayor has a number of serious concerns with this application and having studied it in detail has refused permission for a scheme that he believes would result in very limited public benefit,” Khan’s spokesman said. “In particular, he believes that the design is of insufficient quality for such a prominent location, and that the tower would result in harm to London’s skyline and impact views of the nearby Tower of London world heritage site. The proposals would also result in an unwelcoming, poorly designed public space at street level.”
The City of London sounds like Intramuros which means "within the walls" it is the capital of the Philippines during the Spanish Era it is also known as Manila but as time passes by the City of Manila grew and became much larger than the walls of Intramuros. Unfortunately for Intramuros it's now just a part of Manila and mostly taken care off for tourism and its history.

Yes it is actually called that xD
Btw, they are little Dragons on the Crest of London, Griffins have eagles heads (usually). I used to think they were Wyverns, but those only have two legs!!!
3:40...
Me thinks: "Huh, Freemasons must absolutely love this pl-"
3:50
Me says: "Yeap. Called it".
The most educational 5 minutes of my life (I moved to London 3 months ago and this answers SO MANY questions!) :O
No entendí todo pero es interesante... ;)
Why the desperate cover up from all quarters.
lol not bad
I never knew about this, despite the fact that I've lived in London my whole life. Wow.
the City of London or London?
This was super interesting! I always wondered about some signs saying City of London and the different crests
I don't know why, but this makes me want to play Age of Empires 2
i swear i thought i was the only one..
till i read this comment..
Omg ,you read my mind
Best reply ever. I can't tell you how much I miss playing that game.
It works on windows 7-8, and there is a hd remake on steam with the workshop

A better history lesson than I EVER had in my English/British/UK (whatever) school
You just won a sub. I must watch them all... NOW !
I love how complicated and bizarre many things are in England and the UK :D
I never knew this and I've lived in London most of my life. I really need to go outside more
Dumb ass
Or research info about your city more😉
the city of london is the Vatican City of england
***** So, like the Vatican?
***** no they just fuck the choir boys.
No, because it only has local government authority, the Remmeberancer can be overruled, the confusing status is done to subvert the EU.
It’s the banking part.
yeah except for the whole part where he specifically states it's not like the Vatican City in the video.
Could have added another layer at the end there, since the UK is part of the EU.
Blackfish But that extra layer isn't confusing.
Which is part of nato, which is part of the UN
+pivotcat9 Which is in Earth which is in the solar system which is in the milky way which is in the local group which is in The Universe
+Barney Laurance And NATO isn't part of UN by the same reason
Yeah, but for various reasons the UK gives the EU shit all sovereignty so it's not really worth mentioning.
"City in a city in a country in a country" haha I love CGPGrey's videos!
this video made me think about how in the philippines, there is the city of manila which is the country's capital and manila (metro manila or ncr), a region that comprises multiple cities, one of which is the city of manila. i just think it's fascinating how both london and manila are nesting london and manila inside them
now imagine that, but with Intramuros instead, as it is a walled city too
@@MagnusOfficial how could i forget - Intramuros is a city inside the city of manila inside metro manila 😂
@@cairielle017 exactly 🤩
I'm going to write about London at school! You have just saved my life, as well as giving the answers to so many questions I've always twisted my head around! Thank you!
I think if your teacher knew what they were doing that you got terrible marks. The video is full of inaccuracies!
TEACH THE CONTROVERSY!
Teach me something about the controversy... or at least gimme some information to look into...
I'm a brit, and I sort of knew about this, but didn't really know that it was that separated.
If the London Mayor has no power over the City of London then how did Sadiq Khan manage to veto the 'Tulip Tower' project after it had been approved by the City of London Corporation?
I don't know the answer.
However. If the city of London tried to overule the London mayor wouldn't that let the cat out of the bag?
Unnecessary scrutiny?
@@stuartd9741 I get what you're saying but that would be a bit far-fetched IMO. It doesn't make much sense that they'd go through all that trouble to project a false narrative that the London Mayor has power over the City of London when he doesn't in reality.
@@stuartd9741 perhaps the City of London had the option to appeal the veto, but for whatever reason they decided not to. I mean, it looks like an eyesore compared to the older parts of The City.
@@bobsapp3133
In the 1st video CP mentioned that even the London mayor (Sadiq Kahn's) role is limited to TFL.
So I believe that mayoralty is mostly ceremonial/symbolic
Yet at the same time. Given the total faff for a major of the city of London has to go through.
That role seems just ceremonial even symbolic
(Considering no salary)
Who knows.
Maybe we're reading to much into it.
And the application was refused due to it being an ugly building???
@@stuartd9741 Taken from The Guardian:
The scheme had initially received the go-ahead but Khan dashed the hopes of its designers, Foster + Partners, on Monday.
Hmmm City of London.. It's quite same with Daerah Istimewa (Special Region) Yogyakarta. Now it's one of the provinces in a country named Indonesia. When the other provinces elected their own governor through modern democracy (general election), Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta has their Governor through the tradition of Mataram Kingdom, the ancient Kingdom which has been existed before the emerging of Indonesia as one nation in 1945 - after got the independence from Hollands colonization (or Netherlands? Or Dutch :p, we - I'm Indonesian- call them "Belanda" or "Londo").
In my opinion, you're the one who have a big passion about historical of mankind , I suggest you to learn a little bit about Asian Civilization, which has many awesome or weird facts (also misconceptions)..
Anyway, I'm always enjoying your videos
I actually go to the City of London school, so this is fascinating.
Very edifying video!
Ever since I learned this fact my mind has not been able to compute it.
This video somewhat helped me further digest it!
You make it seem innocuous and harmless. London City, Vatican, D.C. Where most of are problems come from.
Edward Rutherfurd's historical fiction London is a great book to read on this topic. It follows several families in London from pre-Roman days to WWII.
I sorry but I must speak Polish: Super odcinek, naprawdę wszystko robi ogromne wrażenie.
One of the best videos on city of London. Great stuff.
wow... I live in London, and I didn't know anything about this.
I imagine most Londoners don’t
You stupid youngens don't know your damn history. I've known this for at least 2 years and I don't even live in London. *shakes stick manically*
This makes me want to go live there now.
You don't need a car, there's too many trains and busses. Traffic jams calore.
You can go between the two really easily, sometimes I don't even notice when I'm walking around
This actually explains a lot about what my uncle was ranting about when he came over last week.
Seeing the bit about the masonic temple really makes me want to see Grey make a video about the Freemasons and their origins. That'd be cool.
Your use of the word "crest" in this video is incorrect. You are talking about the coat of arms, the crest is on top of the helmet on the coat of arms not an alterative name for such.
I've been to the City of London hundreds of times (due to living real close by) but I didn't know half of what was in this video until now.
The Monty Python reference at 1:54 was so nicely put in
learning German because i like to learn languages with apps, i learned that in german the word City it is used for the center of the city or in some cases cities inside cities because history and stuff ( the second it is anecdotical) the word for actual city it is Stadt a very different word. but the centered city inside in a city it is not just london, buenos aires also have the city of buenos aires that nowadays have banks and money exchanges places. also the vatican is a city inside other city, rome. i wonder how many " center city" cities are. also the equivalent in english to the german city word would be downtown (even than should be "center").

if they taught this kind of stuff in history there would be a revolution
This video is from 2012, and CGP Grey was already using the Bitcoin symbol. You KNOW he's rolling in cash right now.
3:50 it’s not the oldest Masonic temple. The oldest Masonic temple still in use today is St Mary’s Chapel Lodge in Edinburgh, which has records dating back to 1599.
England is better than Scotland though, so it doesn't really matter...

1:35 Where is Sicily, Corsica & Scardinia?
Also, where is Crete plus alot of other Greek & Turkish Islands & Cyprus?
Point of order. The crest of the city that was featured on Paddington Station is actually just the crest of the Great Western Railway and also featured the crest of the city of Bristol in the west. Whilst it's money may have been used they didn't really control or manage Paddington station. The Great Western did
Because, Empire.
I thought that too then he was dead serius romans
The Roman Empire, to be exact.

+Brendon Andrews The same people told us it was just a conspiracy theory that the NSA was collecting all our calls, texts, and emails.

+knox140 well an idea has to begin somewhere. the conspiracy may have drug a bunch of nuts into its web, but somewhere down the line, someone knew.
1:40 I kinda love how you used a German picture here :-D I guess it was just the one with the best quality, but still
@John Smith no way that's german
Once a group of British told me that the true cockneys are the ones that live within hearing range of the Bow Bells, which are on the St Mary-le-Bow church in the City of London. It's a short radius of hearing distance, and according to those Brits, those who could not hear the bells from their homes when growing up are not cockney.
Although I live in London, I never knew this. I do know however that there is a place called the square mile, which is infamous for being covered in CCTV as this is where all the big companies and finance people sit. Could someone clarify whether the square mile and the city of London are the same thing?
Danylo Hordiyevych sorry I'm four years late, but the answer is yes
I love my country. We are so brilliant.
Not as brilliant as you once were but you have a damn cool country.
GhettoMist Depends on your opinion of Empires. Arguably the Empire was the worst thing about this country and it's a crime it existed in the first place. But yes. We were MORE brilliant, now we're just brilliant.
GhettoMist I think you are confusing brilliant with colonialism, which is very bad.
Alex Fido Erm Arguably our Empire was one of the best things to happen.....as long as we remember and look down on the slave trade.
Im quite sick of people ignoring the good and focus solely on the bad while at the same time glorifying the Romans that made animals rape virgins in the Colosseum for entertainment.
Yes, that was a thing, wasn't the Romans Awesome?
ViDeOMaStErPaUl No you're completely misunderstand me. I agree I think the British Empire is a really good thing. However there are some people think it's terrible like "OH NO ALL THOSE PEOPLE WE OPPRESSED!!" When actually, it's "All those people we brought government and industry and economy and education to" In reality, most lived under our benevolent empire, unlike other empires, as we wouldn't massacre the native populace for no reason, and treated people in colonies fairly, such that, when TWO WORLD WARS BROKE OUT, COLONIES such as Indians and South Africans and ANZACs willingly fought for the British.
lol, the ending was such a fairy tale!

it would be awesome if they renamed it Londinium to honor it's origin and further distinguish it from London (Also Londinum sounds awesome lol)
4:25 or the city in a city ruled by a country ruled by a country having laws placed by a union in a continent which could be in another continent which itself could be another continent which is in a word in a solar system in a galaxy in a universe which might be in the multiverse.
Lord Mayor is not elected but appointed by medieval guilds. The city of London is a private entity.
The City of London also tells the Houses of Parliament what laws to make and how to rule the country, it is totally independent from the rest of London and the UK. Bear in mind the Rothschilds are involved in the City of London too along with a lot of other elite.
