Always look forward to your adventures Julian. Here is another Londoner you may or may not know. Nicola white finds treasure at low tide on the banks of the Thames. She makes art work out of her finds and educates with some historical finds.
Ah..she's a mudlarker (like in my Wapping Video). Yes, I have another friend who does that too, except she doesn't make art out of it). Sounds like the sort of person I'd like!
Thanks Mirza. Yes, I know. Those BBC presenters are all the same. Actually there are some who are good but the BBC are very risk averse. They don't like to employ anyone who is different.
That brings back memories. The Mayflower was my local while I was studying. I had some great nights there, 25 years ago. Quiz nights and lock-ins. I didn'r know at the time that my father used to go there in the 1970s, when all of the old dock buildings were standing (and mainly derelict). They messed it up with the awful modern chicken coop housing. Typically, the nicest and most valuable places are the old buildings that survived the developers' wrath. Same story almost everywhere. Architects have done more damege to London than the Nazis did in the war.
Folks..it looks like I was wrong about Fagin! I stupidly read the blue plaque on the side of the building which claimed Fagin lived there but he lived in Saffron Hill! But I was right about Bill Sykes. Bloomin' SOuthwark council putting up wrong information. I read it and added it in at the last minute!
Great video, entertainment and knowledge in a neat package. One glitch, though: Svend Tveskæg (Forkbeard) and Bluetooth were danish kings. Norway was a danish county at that time.
Last year in May I did the long walk from Lambeth North Station following the thames river to Canada Water!! I don't know why but I decided to walk towards Canary Wharf!! I enjoyed it a lot and I also enjoyed watching your video, reminded me of the long walk!! Now I discovered Greenland Dock in Surrey Quay and love the place!! Beautiful!!
Joolz...get yer act together...Fagin lived in Saffron Hill and Bill Sykes did eventually in the Shad Thames area. Just say something like I may be wrong here but... otherwise people in the UK and abroad may be misled. Others than that wonderful!
Another great video Joolz showing The Fighting Tremeraire one of my my favourite paintings after seeing it in the National Gallery, I try to see it whenever I am in London. It is much better than those sunflowers by some other bloke! I really want to visit the Brunel Museum next time I a.down, I only realised it was there on my last day earlier this year.
Bingeing on your films Joolz whilst 'in solitary'... great content and very informative, as I plan a return to Blighty when it's safe. From an Aussie expat desperately in need of a culture shock. Cheers! (clink).
Thank you for adding a map to the video, it helps to follow you mostly for people on the other side of the world like me, love your videos, the only chance of visiting and learning historic facts about this wonderful city so admirably explained by you, cheers 🍻
Wonderful area I know well. Generations of my family lived there & I often walk around soaking up history. They lived in an around Cherry Garden street at turn of the 20th century & census shows that some were "scholars". One became a scientist who helped develop an atomic warhead for USA, another a journalist for London news agency, one worked for American Cable Co in the city, artists & head teacher. Just to prove not every poor family was uneducated. They were also used to happily mixing with all nationalities bc of the proximity to docks.
Your information is a bit out fella...The video starts in Shad Thames, SE1 which is Bermondsey not Rotherhithe. Jacobs Island, which featured in Oliver, and St Saviours Dock are also in Bermondsey. Nice to see St.Mary’s church, where I was christened, married, my Mum and Dad married there, also countless other family weddings, christening’s and funerals. My Nan lived dead opposite the church in Adams Gardens Estate. The Mayflower used to be called the Spread Eagle not the Ship. If you walk past the church towards Rotherhithe tunnel you’ll find the Ship pub. I also had my wedding meal in the Mayflower in June 2019...
As a fellow Londoner, born of generations of Londoners (albeit now an ex-pat in Italy) I salute you! I'm over twice a year to stay with my parents and to see my son who moved to London for his job. But I digress. We do a lot of exploring when I'm over. For example, we did this same walk 2 or 3 years ago armed with Google and thoroughly enjoyed it. The food in the Mayflower is good too, to my great surprise, as I thought it had become a tourist attraction. Anyway, what I wanted to ask you is if you know Sands Film Studio (82 St Marychurch St, Rotherhithe)? When we were in the area it was open to visitors (I mean not just to see their shows: we were given a tour of the place and a potted history) and is absolutely fascinating. I know for sure that it's closed now because of the coronavirus emergency and to be frank I don't know if they still do tours anyway, but if they do after all this is over it's worth a visit.
Many years ago there used to be a film studio opposite St Saviour's Wharfcalled Mill Street Studios which played host to many well known actors, now sadly gone. I had the pleasure of some 1st class lunches at reasonable prices back then. If Joolz had walked round the corner he'd have seen the fire station that was used in the opening credits of the series London's Burning. Also Butler 's wharf was known for its spices, many's the time I'd be typing up documents and the whaft of nutmeg would make its way across the dock. Different times
I remember Mill Street Studios. I met John Thaw in Revs Wine bar at an end of shoot party. I bought him a glass of white wine. I also met the cast of London's Burning there too.
I suggest you visit Deptford for one of your videos. I lived on the Crossfield Estate in Deptford in the 70s. Members of Dire Straits and Squeeze lived there at the time. Dire Straits played their first gig on the estate. A plaque has been placed on the building that some of them lived in. Deptford is rich in history. Among others, Chaucer, Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, Francis Drake, Christopher Marlowe (who was murdered there and is buried and commemorated in St Nicholas churchyard), Grinling Gibbons, Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn have connections to Deptford.
im going to london for the first time in december and i have been whatching your videos to help me understand where are the best places to go im going to stay right across the street so mayflower will be one of my stops sorry for the english im portuguese keep up the good work

Julian, I have visited London twice in the past two years, thanks to your UA-cam channel my London experience was a lot more fascinating. I have looked up your videos from the United States and Mexico and one has to scroll all the way down or click on the third or forth page to find them. I suggest simplifying your video titles, it irritates me to watch people talk about the city sitting on their couch. Fantastic job!
Yes. Exactly. I agree! It's the thing that annoys me most about youtube. I wish I knew what to do about it. Do you have any advice on what I could call them?
Hellooo there! I actually met you both briefly walking past the old Chamber's Wharf site in Bermondsey where all the very, very loud whirring & clanking machinery was. Couldn't hear much because of all the noise, of course. Anyway, glad to see the vid turned out so splendidly & is packed with loads of interesting facts I didn't know before :)
Would you be able to do a video around Canada Water , Greenland Docks Bermondsey area? Thank you for all your videos. Your time and effort is much appreciated.
Hiya. Yes, I'm getting closer to there and I was aiming to do one with a friend who lives there soon. I have a couple which are pretty close though. Did you see my one about Greenwich or Wapping? Hopefully in the next few weeks but depends on my friend.
That’s great! I have seen all your videos and think they are fantastic! I will keep a close eye on your channel. If you need any drone shots or birds eye views please get in contact.

Oh I'm glad. Perhaps also because it was actually very quick and easy to make this one in comparison to the others. Maybe I was in a good mood that day.

Harald Bluetooth was King of Denmark and because he killed the Norwegian King, he also became King of Norway, his son Sweyn Forkbeard was King of Denmark of course, but also King of England, and a bit of Norway but not all of it.
The statues (including the cat) are a tribute to Dr Salter, Ada Salter and their daughter Joyce. They were pivotal in helping those whom lived in poverty in the area. Ada Salter was the London mayor of Bermondsey. Sadly their daughter died of Scarlet fever at 8 years old. The statues are titled "Dr. Salters Daydream".

It’s a great credit to British culture that there isn’t graffiti everywhere.

Ditto. I've never said so, but you nailed it ("that's what she said").

I was supposed to be travelling to London in a month... these videos are the closest I'm getting in the near future...
The food at the Mayflower is (or at least was) good. When we moved back to the US we decided the Mayflower would be the place for our last meal.

That was remiss of me.

great bike ride along that stretch of the river as far as Erith & Dartford, the route gets quieter after Woolwich / Thamesmead

All I just do is, see my beloved London though your eyes and your videos.
Wish you luck for your channel, it's the best among in this segment.
May God bless you abundantly.

The song you hear "Side by Side", is an American song, from 1927.
Harald Bluetooth was King of Denmark and because he killed the Norwegian King, he also became King of Norway, his son Sweyn Forkbeard was King of Denmark of course, but also King of England, and a bit of Norway but not all of it.
But,but.but....what about the damn CAT??!! It's the only reason I clicked!!!
Oh no!! I'm so sorry. I kind of ignored him, didn't I! I can't remember what it was for! I shall have to return.
@@Joolzguides Lol! Yes please! Give him a saucer of milk from me if you do...
How did you learn so much about London?
Just reading and researching....and I was wrong about Fagin....but right about Bill Sykes!
