London Fun Facts Walking Tour - Clerkenwell & Smithfield

- One of my favourite walks is around Clerkenwell and Smithfield Market. I love this area of London! There is so much history here that I cannot possibly squeeze it all into one video but here is a nice walking tour which you could do starting at Farringdon.
Farringdon Station was the terminus of the first subway (underground) line in the world, serving the area of Smithfield, London's oldest meat market, which has existed for 1000 years. It was famous for wife selling in the 18th and 19th centuries and also martyrdom.
William Wallace (or Braveheart) was hung drawn and quartered here and many protestant martyrs were burnt. It was also where Watt Tyler's peasant's revolt came to a head in 1381 amongst many other things!
For St Bartholomew's church see my other video on Splendid Churches • London's Most Splendid...
Then head over to ST John's Gate, the only existing remains of the Priory of the Knights of Saint John and then on to Clerkenwell Green where you will see The Clerks' Well and where Oliver Twist gets blamed for stealing a handkerchief!

I used to go to Smithfield and have a steak breakfast - with a pint of beer at 7am in the 80's! Perfect.
This man should have his own tv show! Another excellent video Joolz old chap.
He has, you're watching it!
Lordy, thanks for the trip down memory lane. Enjoy
after reading English literature and history for 50yrs here in the usa you really make it come alive with your tours thanks sooo much
My old neighborhood, I lived in Grays Inn Building / Rosebury Ave. / Holborn / EC 1 in the mid 1980's ... what a great time (I was 24/25) it was.
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your work. London is so dear to my heart, which is odd since I have never been outside of the US in my life. Being able to see the wonderful minutiae that I read of talked about by such an amazing guide is a real treat.
I live in London, and also enjoy exploring the capital. On weekends I chose a route and walk for hours. For example, yesterday I walked from Barking and Epping forest, passing Woodford and Laughton. I had no idea that Woodford and Laughton were such affluent areas and so many beautiful buildings there. I have been living here for 20 years and still love this city. :)
I worked for a couple of years in the early 80’s further up Farringdon Rd. Near Mt. Pleasant, opposite Exmouth Market ... The Penny Black Pub & Clark’s Pie & Mash were regular haunts ... along with a Pub on Clerkenwell Green, the name escapes me but it was a Chiswick Brewery/Fuller’s Pub ... sold the best pint of London Pride going ! It was near the FreeMason’s Temple, which I think there was a shot of in the video.
These videos bring back some great memories ... I was born in Victoria Park, Hackney and worked in London until 1990 when I left the UK.
Great to show these videos to my kids ! Keep ‘em coming me ol’ China !
Joolz, you could make a fortune by creating a guide book of the different areas of London.
Joolz tours castles, Joolz tours the quirkies, Joolz tours Pubs (best seller no doubt), the possibilities are endless.
Either way, another wonderful walk, I'm exhausted, time for a pint, cheers.
Yes, this is indeed an area that requires about 5 films. I'll keep hassling my publishing friend in the meantime!
Joolz Guides - London History Walks - Travel Films count me in for the first 5 copies! 1 for me and 4 as gifts for those I love the most! lol
Only the discerning purchaser of fine goods will appreciate the time and effort that goes into each and every Joolz Guides book. I should think pubs would be at least a 5 volume set consisting of North, South, East, West and Central London. Of course you’ll have to make some special editions such as Christmas time pubs, Summertime pubs, Guy Fawkes pubs to visit before being hung (or is it hanged lol), Henry VIII’s pubs to lose your head over, Pubs for revolting peasants (cheapest pints in town), Penny Farthing pubs where you get a shot of whisky with each pint, Harry Potters pubs otherwise known as Wine for Wizards. I could probably think of a hundred at least lol. Me thinks I see a pattern emerging lol
Cheers mate.
@@Joolzguides hello there is a guy called rick steves who does a lovely tours of europe show on PBS in america maybe you have heard of him he also sells guide books and does tours and he makes loads of money ! he is a good role model for you keep up the excellent tour shows love em
Joolz tours pubs 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The reason the metropolitan tunnels look so grand, they were built to great western broad gauge and are the widest tunnels on the underground, I drove trains on the met for, 34 years.
Its sad the contrast between the lovely old medieval, georgian, and victorian buildings, and the horrible rubbish they build now, not just in London, but everywhere. Good video Joolz.
Vary...good...spek.....gebeg. ....wll....ead...koatar...fere....wite...cana ..
That's we did in the '70's.....
(love 'em.)
My family owned an Edwardian semi in West London that had NINE fireplaces.. it was magnificent!
@Seamus O'Dork He’s referring to the architecture, idiot!
Brilliant as always. Best London guide videos out there.
Thank you Julian for taking us to a world we've never known with your wonderfully cheerful personality.
I wish I had a good man like you.
The architecture in this part of London is just beautiful. 😊
Great memories. Thanks for showing us Smithfield Market in its final years as a meat market.
Wonderful content, wonderful editing. I love all the still frames you incorporate into these vids. They really enrich the presentation. Well done!
Dan Bennett I agree! But gruesome still frames on this video, omg the way we were, unbelievable.
These videoes never fail to brighten up my day :) am actually going to the William Wallace plaque in May :)
That’s what I love about London so much history and interesting things to see👍👍
This was great, really enjoyed it. Always nice to see a video from you! 💖😊 Nice mention of Geoff Marshall...I'm currently enjoying All The Stations Ireland with Geoff & Vicki! ...hope you had a wonderful day! take care!
Blooming interesting as always, Joolz. Cheers.
Thank you so much for doing these tours. I can't travel at this time in my life. You give me a little taste of Britain from the comfort of my own home. ❤️
Great upload. I will have to check out the rest of your videos.
Joolz, another great video! Spent many weeks in the vicinity in the 80s at a meat training college linked to the market. Years before that, my grandad worked there as a meat porter. Keep up the good work.
It's great to have you back this Sunday morning.
Your videos make me long for getting back to London. Really enjoy all of the quirky historical aspects that you have to share. Well done! I'll have to wander through this area next time I'm in the city as I really enjoy exploring away from the traditional tourist areas.
Another great glimpse of what is just waiting to be discovered
The first trains in the 'cut and cover' tunnels used the GWR broad gauge steam locomotives. That's why the tunnel between Paddington and Farringdon is much larger then others.
And again, a splendid video. Amazing how much there is to see in areas that I thought I was quite familiar with.
in the words of the well renowned academic jim bowen super smashing great love these videos
Let's have a look at what you could have won...
I love this a nd all of the other videos where his sister is on them .
They always seem to have great banter .
Hopefully she'll be in future videos and make one or two herself .
Back in 74' I live in Chelsea court at 305 cranley gardens and London to is me favorite city. Managed alot of pints in me day.Great tour.
Nice nostalgia. I went to college at the Central School on Southampton Row and there were several technicians there, all cockneys. I believe they had worked in Clerkenwell and further to the East when there were factories there. I liked the fact that it was a Dickens area so I felt like a David Copperfield, an outsider trying to make it in London.
Miss Islington and clerkenwell. Smithfield at night, with the lights, was immense. Exmouth Market and myddelton Square are really pretty and interesting too👌
You always make me Smile
Living the Life I wish I would have lead. Outstanding Young man
I'll just dream of the things you see everyday. Thank Tou, Randy
I know it’s a good Sunday if there’s a new Joolz London Guide video. 🎩
This guy is great...I have watched a couple of dozen of his posts & now I want to go to London!!
Watching all videos again during staying home during corona era. God bless u Joolz. Live long and prosperous.
Thanks for another interesting tour of part of London, have yourself a great week-Cheers, Dan!
Was in London in 2017...it was so overwhelming, but definitely want to return! probably 2022!!
Thanks for the tour. I had a nice stay at The Rookery last year in the neighborhood last year.
Love this. Was born in St Bartholomew’s hospital in the 70s and lived in Clerkenwell until the early 90s lovely to revisit and learn some new history. Great video.
Hi, when i was a young chap i used to work in that building with the To let sign (1:56) about 30 years ago, was having a cup of tea and saw from my window a man in a pin stripe suit and a bowler hat (Not You) acting suspiciously by a litter bin calmly he slipped a neat brown package into it, so i told my workmate and before i knew it the area was cordoned off and the bomb squad was there, they retrieved the package and found out it was a pile of filthy magazines !, Take care, keep up the videos.
Sounds like it could well have been me in that case!!!
As always another great video. I look so forward to your videos and learn so much about England from them. Keep up the great work Joolz.
I remember when you walked me through the Market there!!! Love the history there. Thanks for the info!!

Hello Joolz Guides. I really loved it when you start with " Hip hip Tally Ho " it is jolly good. Excellent 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇
I was born in Bart's and brought up in the area. Still live there. I love the area and would never move
Another well made informative video from the best London travel guide. Keep up the splendid work.
Tally Ho! Very interesting video. There was many fine locations for photo sessions. I like to take pictures about old and architectual bildings, so your videos are nice tool to plan next journey to London. One of my favourite cities.
Lovely stuff. The first time I was in the Fox and Anchor was when I was working for Xerox (office in New Oxford Street) in the mid-80's and those of us who attained our annual sales target were given a day off and expenses to have a 24-hour drinking and eating session - starting and finishing with breakfast at The F&A.
I have watch several of your videos and I am very impressed with them and now I am new subscriber. Thanks for the great work.
I’m just working my way through your walks which I am enjoying immensely. I really liked your Clerkenwell walk but was surprised that while standing outside The Three Kings pub you didn’t mention St James Church opposite with its long history.
Enjoyed this jaunt. I'm sure most of your subscribers don't mind if you give info on a place in more than one video. We might have forgotten and most historical places deserve more than one mention. Well done as usual.
Couple of times I had a pint at around 8 am at Fox&Anchor. Sweet memories ))
Nice “Withnail & I” quote Jools. Top work again mate.
WOW. Fantastic.⭐⭐⭐
Cheers love all the videos wonderful thanks to u and ur sister
Very nice video I enjoyed this. It's all near my office Mount Pleasant.

I usually watch your old videos while eating. Sat down just now with my food to see a fresh new Joolz Guide video. What could be better?
Fantastic walks,in this one expected to see Wilton’s music hall...perhaps featured in another one of your video’s!
Joolz your vlogs brighten my day.
I don't watch telly.
I watch brilliant u tube vlogs for my evenings entertainment.
Recommendation to watch a great chap in Manchester called Martin zero who explores Manchester's industrial past.
Notably the lost rivers of Manchester the Medlock & Tib.
Keep safe and carry on.
Great video Jules ..................
Thankyou for another Uncle Monty quote!
Sometimes feel like I'm walking with you through London of old, jack the ripper, Dickens, typhoid Mary, cut throats, press gangs, and other such niceties. Lovely jubbly,

Another fine video good Sir.
Joolz making my virus shutdown better 🙏🎉😜watching your wonderful sights in a wonderful city
You're star Jools - keep it up.
Oh my goodness, the man who dealing with the meat in the video, whose from Well Street is my butcher. Hey the best meat shop ever. Yes he is right, all that meat will last for one day, then he has to get more, as everyone come from far and near to buy his meat. The freshest meat ever, you going to get.
The river fleet became part of the sewer network that was made by bazaljet (probably spelt wrong)to carry effluent away from the city and River Thames to the sea some parts of it can still be seen apparently
I love this part of London
The curving ramps lead down to the now-disused underground railway goods depots. After these closed, they were used as car parks. These goods depots were not part of Farringdon Station or ever used by passengers.
These depots were owned by separate private railway companies. They were each connected by rail to the Metropolitan Widened Lines, a double track which ran from Kings Cross via Farringdon to Moorgate, alongside the existing Metropolitan and Circle lines. The Widened Lines connected to the West to the Great Northern Railway ( by tunnels under Kings Cross Station), the Midland Railway ( by tunnels under St. Pancras ) and the Great Western Railway ( beside Paddington ) and also to the South, by a sharp curved tunnel to the London Chatham and Dover Railway running up from Blackfriars, so a surprising amount of freight, mainly cattle, fish and poultry, was brought by train directly into the underground Smithfield Depots from all over England.
Cattle were brought into the depots on steam-hauled freight trains, unloaded, and driven up the ramps for sale in Smithfield Market.
The Farringdon to Kings Cross section of the Widened Lines remains as part of the busy Thameslink route.
Joolz video is now five years old and yes Smithfield Market did close and was relocated to Dagenham but the listed building is not only being retained and renovated but is being converted into a new and much larger location for the Museum of London, formerly at London Wall, which will open in 2026 and which I think will be fabulous ( and I hope the nearby pubs will still open very early...).
Your a legend Joolz even in Australia 🇦🇺
Watching again.
You do well with your choice of cameraman; Simon must be a great asset to you.
To be watched again and again.
I am staying in Clerkenwell in October. I have ancestors who were baptized at St. James and came to Jamestown in 1618!
It appears to be much warmer than when Beth and I were there! :-) Hope to be back soon!
I 've really enjoyed all your videos of London ❤️
Fascinating. I live in this area. 😊👍🏻

I love these, I wish there were more maps to see what part of London we're in
Very enjoyable and interesting - now off to google maps for a walk round there myself.
One great video. Thanks!
