Exploring London's Pubs: Five Pubs, Five Stories (Volume 2)

- Опубліковано 25 чер 2024
- London is famous for its many pubs, most of which have an intriguing tale or two to tell.
In this video we’ll be visiting five such taverns and examining their long histories which, amongst other things, include a watery gallows, a pub with an important American link, a cheeky parrot, and a tragic true story that inspired Charles Dickens…
I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on this selection of historic inns and, if you’d like to suggest other London pubs of note for future episodes of this series, please do let me know in the comments!
Chapters in this video:

1.04 The Prospect of Whitby, E1
5.09 The Mayflower, SE16
10.10 Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, EC4

Excellent, a similar thing happened to the Greyhound in Sydenham South London, a famous pub with a long history, developers boarded it up and in spite of planning protections and extended arguments from the locals it mysteriously burn down, the developers thought they had it made in the shade, clapping all the way to the Bank. Unfortunately for them the local authorities forced them to rebuild, as you said brick by brick even down to the two stone greyhounds at the main entrance.
Nice ;-) Cheers Patrick
As an Irishman who avoids the so called Irish Pubs when away from home always found the great Old English Taverns full of atmosphere and history.!!!Want to a few more
Ha ha! Cheers Michael! 😉🍻
I had the impression the Irish did not like England or the English
@@scented-leafpelargonium3366 I love both people and country. Fantastic place. Feel more at home in UK than Ireland. Dublin born and bred.
@@iersejounge That's amazing and the way it should be. It would be nice hear more positivity like that from Irish people. I lived in England too for a time and loved it, but now back to the sectarian views of my native Northern Ireland which saddens me a lot. Well done my friend! 🤗
Hop and vine, hull. Best place for a bev up here mate. 😉👍🏻
i work at the mayflower! we unfortunately had to stop selling american stamps, i’m pretty sure it was over the course of the pandemic - but we’re very keen to get the american stamps back esp. for the tourists. it’s such a lovely unique part of the pub’s history :)
Thanks for clearing that up Rosa! That reason makes sense, hope they start getting sold again soon. Thanks again and stay well 😊
Who do they have to contact? I work for the United States Postal Service in the Boston district as a truck driver?
That was the best documentary about London pubs I've seen in a long time, and so well researched. If only the BBC made documentaries like this. A very big thanks for your hard work and brilliant videos.
Thank you so much Alan. Kind words like yours really do give me the best possible encouragement I could wish for when making these videos. Means so much to me to have great people like you watching. Thanks again and stay well sir.
@@Robslondon heads up
Inventor of time travel JACOB VON HOGPLUME 1865 - 1909 lived here in 2063 says that blue heritage London plaque advised as no longer there.
But another blue plaque in London says lived here in 2189.
In Bath, plaque says lived here in 1547
Another plaque in New York says 2063
Another in Stockholm, Sweden says 2193
Another was up in The Netherlands, but now removed.
I think there was one in Brighton for 2063.
Wish I could afford to put up one in Oz
@@georgielancaster1356 :-D
@@Robslondon Is there still a pub called The Old Father Red Cap, near Camberwell Green?
I think someone has mentiomed the pubs around Rotherhythe? Camberwell...
If that pub is still there, it would be a very touching video. Only about a week into the Battle of Britain, a wedding party was celebrating in the pub, and they came out of the pub to go to a bomb shelter and were hit by a 500 lb bomb. 13 killed. 9 in family and 4 family friends. Groom Sydney and Patricia, his new wife, were both 21. Youngest child killed, part of the family, was 8, I think.
Almost wiped out the family. I think there might be a memorial somewhere nearby? Maybe in the park - on the green??
Edit: It seems to be no longer there or might be, but is renamed and no longer a pub.
It was also a famed gay pub in the 60's. Started the career of DJ Tricky Dicky. I'm on other side of world. Hadn't heard of him. Tricky Dicky was Richard Nixon, to me.
Edit: memorial in north east corner of Camberwell Green.
Father Red Cap is ? most recently, Planet Nollywood, a Nigerian Club?
@@georgielancaster1356 Really interesting comment Georgie, thank you. Yes, it was the Father Red Cap, not sure if it's still a Nigerian club as I've not been in that area since before the pandemic. Will keep an eye out next time I'm around there, thanks :-)
I'm amazed at the beauty of London.👍🧿🇬🇧
Nice comment, thank you!
I live in Glasgow and feel more at home in London than any city in the world.
So glad to watch this tour of London's historic pubs - the first I visited was The Prospect of Whitby in 1969, mentioned in a Len Deighton novel.
Much appreciated John; thank you. I have a lot of love for Glasgow too!
Me too. I now understand why so many who leave Glasgow for London never come back.
God I miss wandering around London, getting lost among it's streets, walking down the Thames, and finding jewels like The Grapes and The Prospect of Whitby... Every day off was an adventure. These videos are very bittersweet.
For several years, I was a member of CAMRA. When in London, we visited their top pubs of whatever year. I was driven as much in search of pub food and decor. This is a fine video, showing much I had missed out. The Old Cheshire Cheese is the only pub in this video I visited.
Thank you James, glad to be able to help in some way 🍺
I can only wish UA-cam and this channel had been around when I lived down there from 1988-1993. You have a way of making me want to investigate places that the usual tourist stuff doesn't. I'm always more interested in the history of ordinary folk much more than the kings and queens pish.
Thanks so much for your kind words. I’ve always preferred social history 😉 Cheers and stay well.
I love exploring the foreshore at low tide beneath The Propect of Whitby. Oyster shells and fragments of old tiles and bottles from centuries past are everwhere.
Beautiful comment, thank you 😊
The Prospect of Whitby was my great Grandfathers old haunt. He was the dock constable for Shadwell Basin and the head bell ringer at St Pauls Shadwell just around the corner. Dave Trumble. My great uncle is also buried in that churchyard but he has no headstone, instead they planted a plum tree that still grows in the yard.
Brilliant comment; thank you so much for sharing your family history. It's always wonderful to hear from people who have a direct connection with these sites. Thanks again; stay well.
@@Robslondon You too. Its shame really, the last time I was in London, 6 years ago, I wanted to see inside the church and the rope room so I could play a BBC interview from the early 60's of my great grandfather which they held in the rope room and ended with a demonstration of a reel of the bells.
I used to love going to Narrow street with my Dad and Uncle in the 80s and 90s and visiting those pubs . Some wonderful memories both of those great guys are upstairs now and i live in another country . I always feel a great sense of comfort when i see something that looks unchanged from back in the day thank you i can still see myself laughing with them . Hope i get to go back to London some day i lived there for 48 years and still miss it .
Lovely comment, thank you 😊
That must be the first time in yonks I have watched a youtube doc all the way through. Truly fascinating. Absolutely brilliant.
Thanks so much Stephen; really appreciate your support and kind words. Stay well mate.
I wonder how long after the early 1960's the Prospect of Whitby continued to be the pub that literally 100's of rugby players went to on Saturday evenings to drink and sing? Teams from north, south, east and west London having played away at the opposite ends of London stopped on their way home. All travelled in cars in days of pre breathalyser! Literally heaving with rugby players during early evening. It was an institution which I enjoyed many times. A small "band" of oriental chaps either knew or picked up on any rugby song, mostly vulgar. They sat expressionless and played. Happy memories. The pub was always packed needless to say.
Gough Square was the original home to the studios of The London Broadcasting Company, LBC, mainland Britain's first legal commercial radio station, which began broadcasting on the 8th October 1973.
Yes, great bit of knowledge Trevor!
My father lived in London in the mid/late 1930s. He always told me about DD's. In 1974 I visited only to find that, apart from sawdust on the floor, it was remarkably clean. When I got home I told mt father. He said I should have visited downstairs, not the upstairs part. So about a year later I did. What a difference!
Nice comment Liam, thanks!
I really enjoyed that episode. I went to Dirty Dicks in the 1960's and it had so much atmosphere. Th
In the bar there were beer barrels for tables and sawdust on the floor and lots of cobwebs hanging from the ceiling and in a different room there was a big table laid out with food for the wedding reception all covered in dirt and cobwebs everywhere. What a pity I didn't take a camera! Anyway, it was great learning about the other old pubs I look forward to your next volume!
Thanks so much Beryl! It’s fascinating to hear memories about the old Dirty Dicks… sounds like it was quite a sight to behold!
That's just how I remember it..
This channel is simply brilliant. Robslondon may not have many subscribers but is a golden nugget in a mountain of dross. Please keep this up because some of us appreciate quality when we see it!

I totally agree, there is such quality here from Rob and I’m so pleased to have come upon his channel! The stories are amazing…that Carlton Tavern, OMG….how could such destruction have been allowed to happen? Heartbreaking…but the rebuild wonderful, managing to keep some original artefacts…and serve the developers damn well right….I love all of London and her great history..get there whenever I can, just to wander the streets and take in all of the atmosphere and wonderful historic sites round every corner 😃
This is an excellent and very well-made and researched documentary. Thank you for making it. I'm sure many tourists will find it very useful and interesting when planning their visit to London.
I appreciate that; thank you. Stay well.
That's my trips to London sorted for another year! Thanks Rob. You really should be making documentaries for large, mainstream companies - right up there with anything on Channel 5, BBC4, Yesterday etc. etc. 😃
I Can’t thank you enough for those kind words Brian. Much appreciated sir; stay well and thanks again; hope you enjoy your next trip! 😉

As ever, a fab video which I found facinating, particulary the last story - justice ! Well done you.
Thanks so much Ralph, that means a lot to me. I’ve been meaning to cover the Carlton Tavern for quite a while now; I still can’t get over the anger I felt when it was knocked down! Thanks again and stay well 🍺
Well done old boy very enjoyable and lots of history, a great film for overseas visitors to watch before they come to London so they may visit these pubs. London had taken a battering but she’s a great city and at one time the beacon of hope for the whole world, she did not flag or fail.
Wonderful words David 😉 Thanks so much for the support; stay well sir 🍺
I first went to Dirty Dicks in 1968.. I still have a fish In an envelope that told your fortune.
I can still remember standing agog at the cobwebs inthe ceiling.. We went down stairs to see the cake and table covered in cobwebs....
What an incredible memory to have Jacky! It’s probably unrecognizable today compared to what you experienced
Ye Old Cheshire Cheese was a unique and fun experience! We haven't made it to all of these pubs yet, but we will eventually. It is good to have more to do each time you visit London. Thanks for your hard work in presenting these!
It's my pleasure :-)
I visited Dirty Dicks on a regular basis in the late 60's and your description of it at the time was spot on. On the wooden wall behind the bar there were scratched initials of American service men from WW2 and I remember being encouraged by the bar staff to do the same on the barrel that was our table. I saw some recent pictures of the interior since renovation and they have ruined it. It looked like a Weatherspoon pub which it might be now who knows.
Great comment Gerald, thanks. I didn’t know about the American servicemen’s initials; such a shame they’ve been lost 😞
Do you remember the old net where each Easter a hot cross bun was thrown, it was across the ceiling of the bar, the buns were black with age and smoke.
I love this Rob. Totally inspiring to a life long pub goer and social enthusiast! The Jerusalem around the corner from Farringdon Station, and The Lamb up from Lam Conduit Street. 2 lovely pubs
Lovely comment! Cheers Gary 🍺
I lived within the square mile on New Change behind St Paul's for 4 years when I was a kid (30+ years ago). I'm always fascinated by the history of the City. This video is really well put together and really interesting. Thanks.
Thanks so much Nick, much appreciated. Stay well.
This was so interesting! Thank you! We’ll visit these pubs on our next trip from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Cheers! ❤🇨🇦
Thanks so much PJ! Hope you enjoy your visit!
I love the fact the locals took on the developers with the Carlton Pub, where I live developers want to compulsory purchase 14 Gardens to widen a road so new houses can be built.
Pubs love them absolutely, the Prospect of Whitby had a sign up in the beer garden said its where a particular type of flower came into the country, was traded for a pint or two, love that, Leigh on Sea is good for Smugglers pubs, also the Mayflower would Dock there regularly
Great comment Paul, thanks. Cheers and stay well.
The Prospect of Whitby is a superb pub.
I was born 5 minutes from the prospect I was very poor back in the 50s so to Hearn some money I used to go to the prospect and ask the customers mind your car please sir , when I grew up it became my local my friend used to sing in the prospect every Sunday whenever I visit London I pass the prospect so many memories I’m now in my 74th year they say time flys
Thank you for sharing that Tony, very moving. Stay well sir.
Thanks Rob for the trip down memory lane. Miss all the old pub of Wapping Stepney and Docklands having spent a few years living and working in the area way back in the earlier 2000's...Nicholas South Africa
Cheers Nicholas 😉 Stay well.
Loved the video Rob. I wish I lived closer to London.
Thank you so much. Hope you get here soon 😉
2 really underrated pubs in London which are both in tooting. The Antelope and the Kings head. both amazing.
Nice recommendations Tim, thanks for sharing.
Oh, I'm great the Carlton Tavern was rebuilt! 🙂 I'm not a pubgoer, as I don't drink and don't even live in London - but it's a beautiful building.
Btw, something similar happened in Munich. A property "investor" decided to tear down a small apartment house which was a listed building. He had to rebuild that, too.
Thanks for the lovely comment Petra- Frohe Weihnachten!
Excellent Video, especially the relaxed narritive style! I remember Dirty Dicks well. I used to work for some years in an office on Bishops Gate and would often drop in with workmates on the way back to the rail station. Oh happy days!
Nice memories Wayne, and thank you so much for the kind words!
Very well done, thank you! A lovely pub crawl, as well as a valuable historical tour of London. The Cheshire Cheese Pub, in particular, and its former habitues, including Dr. Johnson, Mr. Boswell his amanuensis, Henry Fielding, Edmund Burke-- quite a clientele, I should say, as well as its visitors.
Many thanks Michael. Stay well.
Excellent. I grew up in Mile End and I know all the pubs with the exception of The Carlton. Thank you. It's a great reminder as I've lived in New Zealand for the past 34 years.
Thank you so much Mike, it makes me really happy to know people around the world- and old school Londoners- watch these videos. Cheers and stay well.
For a couple of years in the 1980s I used to live and work in Rotherhithe. It was very, very, run down at the time before they started rebuilding the docklands. The Mayflower was my local and I still reckon a pint on outside 'terrace' is one of the best places to be in London. I haven't been back for years, but I doubt it has changed much.
The pub was always a hit with Americans who would risk the mean streets of Bermonsey and Rotherhithe to visit it.
Great comment; thanks for sharing your memories.
I think the Mayflower may be one of my favourite pubs ever, there's something lovely about sitting out on the deck over the Thames looking out to Canary Wharf with the wash of boats lapping underneath, incredibly peaceful but withing spitting distance of the city. Something a wee bit special (and the Sunday Roasts are amazing)
Well said, Ian- one of my favourites too ;-)
Make your blood boil was right over the Carlton Tavern!! I would love to go in that pub because of that story alone.
Hope you manage to get there Sonia! Thanks and stay well.
Hello Robert
Loved the video. We just returned from our trip to London and we ate at the Prospect of Whitby. We had a great view of the river and the meal was very good. On our next trip we are planning to go to the The Mayflower which we have previously walked past. I have a connection as I have ancestors John Howland who came over on the Mayflower in my family tree. We have not been in Dirty Dicks but my grandparents have and I have a picture of Dirty Dicks from there visit to London in 1970 plus the picture a I took in 2017. We walked by the Old Cheshire Cheese on our way to visit Dr Johnson house and we had a packed lunch with Hodge the cat. So video was aim right us and we truly enjoyed it. Thanks Chris and Sandra of Canada.
Thanks so much Chris, lovely comment 😊 Stay well
Yes, a lovely old pub. Went there a few times when I lived in Wapping. Good food and good atmosphere. Did you happen to notice whether they still had the old gas mantle lamp lit above the bar?
@@edwardoleyba3075 I didn’t see that Edwardo, will have to go back! 😉
@@Robslondon . It’s been a long time since I was there last. I moved from Wapping in 2001. As I recall, the gas light was over the bar, (towards the front), as you walked towards the back of the pub. There was a small framed description of it saying it was the only remaining gas mantle from when the premises were lit entirely by gas. It gave the place a nice ambiance on a dark grey day😉
@@edwardoleyba3075 Thanks Edwardo, maybe someone here can verify if it's still there? I imagine it would be.
Oh how I enjoyed singing old rugby songs on a packed Friday night and last tube home to Stanmore. The sport of trying to hit police boats from the 'Prospect of Whitby' and always someone spilled or thrown beer 🍺 over me.
😁
I played an away darts match there in the 80,s and always remember they served the best after darts food in our league. The hosts were friendly and the pub was atmospheric

I love learning about London's old haunts after becoming obsessed with the White Chapel murders !
Yes, I think a lot of people follow the same path Ryan!
Me too. I could sit in the 10 Bells all day soaking up the atmosphere.
@@rosiebottom3870 Yes, that’s a good one 😉
There are not too many pubs left around Whitechapel.
A wonderful film, Rob, many thanks! The "Cheese" was one of my regular lunchtime haunts when I was working at Fleetbank House (Salisbury Square) for the MoD back in the mid 90s. We always had to arrange to meet outside, as trying to find a colleague inside was nigh on impossible given the maze-like interior.
I then lived about 5 minutes away from the Carlton (2000-2005), and it was our regular Sunday afternoon meeting spot - I had absolutely no idea that it'd been demolished and rebuilt - I *must* visit again next time I'm in the city.
You asked for suggestions - how about the "Hole in the Wall" on Mepham Street. There's nothing particularly historic about it, but it's a wonderful little place with sticky floors and disgusting toilets. It's also hilarious to take someone there who has never visited before - purely to see the look on their face when a train rumbles out of Charing Cross and the whole place vibrates :)
Again - thanks for some wonderful vids!
Matt
Thanks so much for the kind words and wonderful comment Matt, much appreciated. And yes, I know what you mean about the Hole in the Wall! ;-) Might have to pop there! Cheers and thanks again.

As a kid visiting London in 1969 I remember seeing, from the top of a bus, a pub called The Froth And Elbow; the sign outside was an image of an arm in a suit of armour holding a pint. Best name for a pub, ever. Obviously, something I've never forgotten.

I'm an expat Londoner planning a London pub crawl next year. Very helpful. Thanks Rob!
It's a pleasure Nick; cheers ;-)
Thanks, Brilliant video and details of the history of these pubs, great narration style too.
Thanks so much Mark, I really appreciate that. Stay well.
Amazing knowledge you have. And great video. I'm visiting the Prospect and Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese very soon!
Thank you loicjonet! Hope you enjoy your visits! Cheers ;-)
Hi Rob thanks for this really interesting even the wife was interested. I drove a cab in London for 20 years and these pubs not that I’ve ventured into them , they were a big part of my working day I love the deep history of London and public houses being one of them . Thanks again for the history and fascinating background to these pubs . There is a couple that comes to mind which you probably know is the Magpie & Stump Old Bailey.
Where Hanging Breakfast’s we’re order of the day , also The George tucked away off borough high street if that’s of any interest to you . Cheers Rob 🍻
Many thanks Jota; the Magpie and Stump is an excellent idea! I'll add it to the list. I'll certainly be covering The George at some point too. Thanks again and be lucky ;-)
I met some journalists in a pub on Fleet Street, one of whom took me to the Cheshire Cheese. It was an amazing place and I was introduced to some of the journalists and the printers, who occupied a bar in the basement. All good fun. x
Great comment Christine, thank you 😊
Very interesting and well researched. It's alway good to see a traditional pub.
Thanks 😊
Love these pub videos it is veey interesting thank you for making them. Elaine from South Africa 😀
Thank you so much for watching Elaine :-) Stay well.
Another great video Rob.The story of the Carlton Tavern is very similar to the demolition of the Firestone Building along the Great West Road in 1980-only in that case the developers got away with it.Maybe there is a video in that story and the other inter-war buildings along the Great West Road-including the Hoover building where the listed art deco facade now hides a Tesco.
Many thanks Brian, and yes that’s a great call. I’ve always been fascinated with the buildings along there as I grew up not too far away. Cheers and stay well.
This is fantastic! Thank so much for the information. I will certainly be visiting some of these pubs.
Cheers Chris; hope you enjoy them!
Thank you so much. These videos are absolutely spot-on. They are beautifully filmed, and all (as far as I've seen) are meticulously researched. I have not viewed every one of them, but I wonder whether you have covered the 'Mitre' Tavern, off Ely Place, near to Hatton Garden? It was the first pub my father took me into in about 1960. He had been a chorister just round the corner at Saint Etheldreda's RC Church in the '20s.
Such a lovely comment Peter; much appreciated sir. Yes, the Mitre Tavern will definitely be covered. I did in fact intend to cover it in the very first video, but the footage didn’t turn out! It will appear though, rest assured so please stay tuned. I must say also that your father sounds like he was an extremely interesting man, what a wonderful memory linked to The Mitre you have. Thank you again Peter and stay well.
Interesting seeing the google street view of the Carlton Tavern. Developers can't escape that.
The Carlton footy jumper makes me a bit sick though.
Great video again, I look forward to part 3!
I highly recommend giving the Fox and Firkin in Lewisham a look, it’s my personal favourite pub in London!
Thanks Eliot! I am hoping to get further into south London ;-) Stay well.
Thank you for the video 😊
Thank you so much for watching Kerim 😊
