    . . . This is their portrayal of Hades? Hades was one of the few gods only concerned with doing his damned job! One of the few Greek Gods with an ounce of nobility to him!

      They didn't want people to say they copied Disney (the original design was slimer until someone pointed out the similarities) so they made him fat. (This was said in the dvd commentary by the director herself)

      Apollo was just as much an asshole as the rest of the Olympians. Here are some of his notable crimes:
      1) Chasing women to the point of one asking to be turned into a tree just to get away from him.
      2) Slaughtering a woman's children simply because she had a bunch of them and was proud of it.
      3) Giving Midas donkey ears simply because he thought Pan was a better musician; and subsequently turning Pan into a footstool because he's a sore loser.
      4) Killing the only man his sister ever loved out of petty jealousy.
      Granted, Apollo's not nearly as infamous as some of the other gods, but he was an utter scumbag in his own right. Hephaestus was actually pretty decent, and Hermes may have been mischievous, but he left mortals alone for the most part.

    • @pyromania1018
      @pyromania1018 8 років тому +32

      ***** I give Hephaestus the benefit of the doubt because there's no recorded story of him ever hurting mortals for his own sick amusement. Aphrodite did that a lot, and Ares was the closest thing the Greek pantheon had to a "god of evil".

    • @pyromania1018
      @pyromania1018 8 років тому +25

      I wouldn't say that. Several of their misdeeds had little, if anything, to do with their specific areas of power. Zeus, for example, is also the god of justice, but he's a corrupt, adulterous rapist; Poseidon is a pedophile; Athena threw a temper tantrum simply because a mortal was better at knitting than her; Hera vented her marital frustration on her husband's victims; and the Trojan War was kicked off because Zeus was too cowardly to be the judge of a simple beauty contest, which was only held because the instigator wasn't invited to a wedding.
      Looking back, there are a couple more gods who weren't too bad:
      1) Dionysus - His only notable action against mortals was when he turned the crew of a pirate ship into dolphins for abducting him while in a human disguise (except for one, who recognized him and treated him respectfully). Not exactly a nice thing, but not brutal, either. Aside from that, he rescued Ariadne from that island Theseus unknowingly marooned her on, made her a goddess, married her, and was faithful to her.
      2) Helios - Slaughtered Odysseus's remaining crew, but they stole and ate many of his cattle, despite countless warnings against doing so. He was even pretty mello about Hercules (I think) shooting an arrow at him. His only other notable act was when he, against his better judgment, let his son take his chariot for a ride. It quickly got out of control, and despite Helios' protests, Zeus slaughtered the boy.
      3) Eros - Not much of a prick himself, but his mother kept him under her thumb by paddling his ass on a daily basis and forcing him to shoot love arrows even when he didn't want to.
      4) Amphitrite - Unlike Hera, she didn't torment her husband's victims and bastard children, likely because she was never all that interested in marrying Poseidon in the first place.

    I love the hilarious irony. Hades baits him into talking shit about his father, even saying "I can't believe he'd put politics above his own son", just to deliberately drag in his son and force him to make a hypocrite of himself, forced to choke down his anger and let Hades have his way, or else abandon everything he was hoping to achieve.

    • @furioussherman7265
      @furioussherman7265 6 років тому +44

      Problem is that Hades isn't supposed to be a douche. He's basically true neutral on the D&D morality chart: He doesn't seek revenge, he doesn't double-cross, he doesn't make deals, and he's not cruel to others. The reason why is because given the passage of time, death will always win. Those whom he likes will be rewarded with blissful eternity in the Elysian Fields, while those he doesn't like will be punished with endless torment in Tartarus.

    • @LittleMissRequiem
      @LittleMissRequiem 4 роки тому +6

      Furious Sherman Hades leans more toward Lawful Neutral rather than True Neutral, being such a stickler for the rules (especially regarding proper burial procedures++ and not resurrecting the dead) with only a few occasional exceptions if he deems them sufficiently reasonable. But other than that I’d have to agree.
      ++So much so that, in one of the many different versions of the story of Sisyphus, Hades was willing to let a guy WHO HAD JUST KIDNAPPED HIM AND HELD HIM PRISONER FOR A FULL FREAKIN’ MONTH return to the realm of the living for a couple of days so that said kidnapper could avenge the desecration of his corpse and arrange a proper funeral. Granted, the whole corpse desecration had been pre-arranged on the kidnapper’s part so that he could flee the scene as soon as he was back among the living, but Hades still got back at the little bastard in the end, either by having Hermes drag him back by force of just waiting patiently for the guy to eventually die of natural causes.

Also consider after thousands of years of death (Some massive such as The Black Death and the dropping of 2 Nukes) He must be FLOODED with servants to take care of EVERYTHING. I must imagine he has plenty of free time, and as such has gotten fat and lazy. Plus as a God he may be able to directly draw on the energy of all that death to create a more formidable form when he wants.

    I think I know why Hades looks like Bacchus: it's Summer (or possibly Spring), and since Persephone is back on Olympus with her mother, he gets lonely, so he overeats to relieve stress. When Fall comes, he starts getting back into shape, so that by the time she returns at the start of Winter, he looks more presentable.

    This has to be one of the more interesting interpretations of Hades I have seen.. I was immediately drawn to it to the point where I had to rewatch this scene multiple times.
    While of course he is not a canonical Hades, neither is really any of the gods in the DCU very similar to their intended roles in the Greek pantheon.
    What we have here is a Hades who probably feels forgotten, left alone in the underworld to oversee the refuse of the mortal world as his two brothers cover themselves in glories and riches. He probably loathes them both, loathes them as much as he loathes most things.. and seeks any means possible to sting them.
    Torturing mortal or demi-god souls does after all grow tiresome after a while, and here he is given the opportunity to not only see the dismay in Ares' eyes upon noting the fate of his son... intentionally causing this confrontation with all the malicious glee evident in those expressions and the snarky tone.. but he can also deliver unto his own brother Zeus a barbed sting to his pride and to his heart...
    All he has to do is offer a fool the chance to damn himself after all, an act of Mercy to a long bondaged nephew with such a tragic result...
    Oh this mountain of flesh and intrigue probably adores it... and I adore him for this.. what a wonderful antagonist.

He's got anger management issues and he's a bit depressed, but he's also content with his job and is probably the most sensible of the Greek Gods. He doesn't seek revenge or double-cross others, he knows that the due passage of time will always have its way and that sooner or later, anyone he doesn't like will end up on his turf. He also doesn't make deals or show outward cruelty.

      Ma Az i agree Hades, unlike his two brothers was never a sexual deviant, adulterer, or deadbeat dad. Although you could say he is envious, scornful, and can be accused of kidnapping. However pure evil and corrupt is a tad extreme, I would say more melancholy and vengeful.

    • @maziazad7740
      @maziazad7740 10 років тому +1

      CountKibblesNBits He is certainly not perfect but I wouldn't expect him to be. Despite being the oldest of the Olympians he has a pretty lonely existence. Confronting the solemnity of death on a daily basis would probably make most people melancholy as well. The kidnapping is one of his worst offenses, but at least he seems to have treated her well, wasn't abusive, and was faithful which is admirable considering the general behavior of his fellow gods.

    • @CountKibblesNBits
      @CountKibblesNBits 10 років тому +1

      Ma Az I agree, but i feel I must explain my reasoning behind judging him as vengeful. He was the eldest brother out of all of the original olympian gods, and as the eldest should have rightfully gotten the best kingdom the earth and the heavens. You can say that even though Hades agreed to the lottery, he could have still felt scornful towards zeus out of jealousy.

    I wish Hades was a bit more well shaped at least with an armor and a hood covering his face with shadow and omly seeing his red shinny eyes, but I like how Ares cares for his son. So far I know, Ares is not always the warmonger that his title represents. Yes, he does have family problems with Zeus and Athena. And also he does not like to socialize with the other gods, even with his own family. Heck, the only friends he has are 3 dark gods, one known as Eris, Goddes of Discord. But remember, Ares only has a very strong connection with only one Olympian and that his Aphrodite, Goddes of Love and his very own lover, maybe the only one who can have big chat with the God of War and even had a baby with him (I can remember the name) and I believe he is a loving warmonger father. So I do love how they showed sadness how his uncle treated his mortal son. What you think?

    "We have one final task of you, Kratos. Your greatest challenge awaits in Athens; where even now, my brother: Ares, lays siege, as we speak. Athens is on the verge of destruction. It is the will of Ares my great city fall. Zeus has forbidden the gods from waging war on each other. That is why it must be you, Kratos. Only a mortal trained by a god has a chance at defeating Ares.
    Complete this final task, and the past that consumes you will be forgiven. Have faith, Kratos, the gods do not forget those who come to their aid."

    You are a little fool, Ares. Did you really think you could bribe the god of the underworld with a thousand servants? Hades doesn't need servants, nor does he need war to get more. I felt so sorry for Thrax in this movie, murdered by his own mother who never gives a fuck about him, tortured by his granduncle for a millenia and left to rotten by his father, poor boy.

    • @7463649pH
      @7463649pH 8 років тому +1

      He deserved it, he's the product of a rape and had no redeeming qualities which is why his mother had no love for him, not to mention he was killed as he was killing countless Amazons that were his mother's sisters

    • @xCoatlicuex
      @xCoatlicuex 8 років тому +2

      7463649pH Well being a product of a rape is not his fault in any way, also in barely two quick scenes, one of them fighting and other as slave we can't see if he had redeeming qualities or not, and Hipolita was not the best judge in this film since she has an irrational hate towards men and specially all related to Ares, Amazons were also killing and we can't say that they deserved a eternity of slavery in the Hades for that.

    • @7463649pH
      @7463649pH 8 років тому +1

      +xCoatlicuex I agree it wasn't his fault but I explained that was one of the reasons his mother had no love for him. Obviously it's not for us to judge what goes on. As an audience, it our job to be entertained and try to relate to the characters and the dynamic. This movie does not sympathize with Ares or his son because they are evil by nature, it's just who they are. I was merely trying to tell you why she ruthlessly killed her son according to the movie. You can't really say she has an irrational hate for men either, she interrogated Steve with the lasso loosely on his neck and after determining he was no threat to her people, she let him go back in peace with Diana to escort him back home safely. As for Ares, well, he's the God of WAR. Would you trust him or anyone that wants to let him loose?

    • @xCoatlicuex
      @xCoatlicuex 8 років тому +2

      7463649pH Well, more or less my point, the movie doesn't present the amazons as characters totally good, they are actually flawless and the irrational hate is one of their flaws, yes Hypolita doesn't kill Steve, but he is attacked incarcerated, judged, menaced, just because he is a men, only after great deliberation she decides send an ambassador to judge if the world is worthy to being in contact with the amazons, (even Diana who is one of the most open amazon perceive courtesy and jokes as attacks) amazons are, proud, aggressive and mock those who prefer the study over the fight (like Alexa), and are eager to fight and kill, being honest without all the gifts of the gods (power, youth, magic) they will be a barbaric civilization who has any development in the last thousands of years. About Ares, well in this movie (and DC universe in general) he is a villain, but actually in greek mythology he was father and protector to the amazons.

    • @7463649pH
      @7463649pH 8 років тому +1

      +xCoatlicuex No they aren't presented as purely 'good' but that's what makes the DC Comics great (in my opinion). They produce characters that are relatable. No one is perfect. Everyone reacts to situations differently and you can't judge unless you have been in that situation- for movies, all you can do is try and enjoy, for real life, all you can do is learn from the mistakes made. As for Ares, there are many different fables and stories in Greek mythology (some good, some bad) but we are talking about how he was depicted in this movie.

    Hades is actually is a tough, and terrfying God. Mortals feared him, but respected him for he always acted with justice and honor. he is the oldest of 3 brothers, and perhaps the most dangerous one. a battle between Olympus and Underworld is the kind of war you cant be sure who to bet on. yet, even tho Hades knew he was cheated to rule Underworld and angry to his brothers because he cared about balance more than his pride he let go of the past and accepted his responsibilities with full seriousity. only known crime of his is the kidnaping of Persaphone. even tho some say he raped her there is nothing written about it according to original mythology. after a few fears Persaphone actually fell in love with Hades, for he was always caring and kind to her. This is not Hades. this is jabba the Hut.
