  • Imagine putting a TRAIN up the highest peak in the land!!! Well that's what they did in Wales.
    We travel by steam on the Snowdon Mountain Railway. An unusual but stunningly beautiful trip.

    The last time I was here all the trains were steam hauled. Alas, those days have gone but my daughter and I have booked onto the only steam hauled train in a few weeks time, the first time I have used the train to reach Snowdon.

    Here’s some tips for Welsh pronunciation:
    Ll is an aeration. Place your tongue to the back of your teeth and expel air through the sides of your mouth.
    Dd is pronounced like the ‘th’ at the start of the word ‘there’. Has a little bit of a buzz to it.
    Ch is a phlegm sound.
    R is rolled.
    F is pronounced like a v.
    Ff is pronounced like an English f.
    C and G are always pronounced hard, like when you learn the alphabet as a child in England. Think C as in Cat, and G as in Got.
    Si is pronounced ‘sh’ when followed by a vowel (a,e,i,o,u,y,w), hence the word siop for shop.
    Siop Yr Orsaf is pronounced Shop Urr Orrsav.
    Also, interestingly, there is no ‘Mount Snowdon’ any more. The mountain is known officially only by its Welsh name ‘Yr Wyddfa’ now and has been stripped of its English name.

    I’ve never been to the top of Yr Wyddfa despite having lived in Eryri (ish) all my life. I’m determined to do it this year - have been waiting for the steam trains to restart. When I went in my teens we only got as far as Clogwyn station due to fog. And no you couldn’t see the view! 😂
    The first incline you reach is the lower viaduct which crosses the Afon Arddu. You can walk to the waterfall and look up to the train. It’s a stunning shot of the train.
    (Also fun fact - my Taid (grandad) did some of the plumbing at the old summit building)
    Love the fact that there’s a seagull trying to nick food at Clogwyn. They get everywhere.
    *cough*there are in fact two heritage railways that connect to each other in Porthmadog*cough
    (Actually they’re operated by the same company now but the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways meet each other at the same station in Porthmadog. It’s the BEST railway! Not that I’m biased 😉)

    I made one trip to Wales and rode most every railroad except this one. My railfan friend and I did not have time to wait in a huge line and did not have a reservation. I got a few photos. I live near the Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway that climbs Pikes Peak in the US. Many years ago, the US railway had started conversations with the Snowdon Mountain about selling them four 80-passenger self-propelled railcars built by SLM. Both railways used the Abt rack system and changing the track gauge would be possible from 4' 8-1/2" (1435mm) to 2 '7-1/2" (800mm). But Snowdon could not deal with the loading gauge of the SLM cars which was very wide. It would require widening cuts, moving station platforms, and more while retaining compatibility with the existing SM equipment. When the Manitou & Pikes Peak Railway was recently (2018-2022) rebuilt using a Strub rack, these four 80 passenger units were donated for display locally. After the rebuild, the US railway's name was changed to the "Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway." The Broadmoor hotel is very high end and is owned by the same person who owns the railroad. Great video on the Snowdon Mountain. Nice to see narrow-gauge steam still running. Thank you.

      Oh you missed this one? That's a shame.
      I did ride Pikes Peak back in '96.
      Thanks for that information. Very interesting! I always think steam when I think of the Snowdon Railway, but I get the impression they are open to modernisation. The coaches they have with the diesels look fairly new.
      Cheers!

      Ya know, pretty near to me there is a narrow gauge railway which runs two Baldwin built locomotives, plus (I think) two which they have built themselves from Baldwin plans! I reeeeally want to get over to the Breckon Mountain Railway whenever I can. Ha!
      Do you think it would be cool to track down American locomotives in the UK? I did have the pleasure of working as fireman on a Baldwin built S160 a few years ago. That was fun.

      @@ThatBIGTRAINGuy Okay... now I think you're onto something there for content... I think you would draw a ton of US viewers if you were seeking US made Loco's in the UK... That would be very cool I think... I grew up next to the city that the Mason loco's were made they were famous for the Forney style engines... But now it's all gone nothing is left of it... But... years ago I was like an archeologist and took a metal detector and found some locks, spikes, lanterns and other RR memorabilia... I have an authentic Old Colony RR brass lock... I found everything at old sights that sat undisturbed and I got lucky... Maybe thats something you could do with your RR buds... do a dig and see what yo might find... Just a thought...

    • @ThatBIGTRAINGuy
      @ThatBIGTRAINGuy  2 роки тому +1

      @@davidedgerly I'll have to track down some US locos then. I only know of those two on the Brecon Mountain Railway in Wales, plus I think there are three Baldwin S160s, which many were brought over to Europe to help with WW2, but very few left. I'll have to see if there are any other engines.
      Wow, that's really cool that you found a bunch of artefacts! It most probably wouldn't be possible to do that over here as the old locomotive factories are in the centre of towns. So the sites of those, what were huge operations, are almost all redeveloped into other buildings in busy town areas, and what little may still exist would be converted into something else. Look up Swindon Locomotive Works, - that was a huge place, massively expanding the town but now what tiny portion is left makes up what is simply called the Steam Museum and a shopping centre. Still though, there could be something for videos in that.

    • @davidedgerly
      @davidedgerly 2 роки тому

      @@ThatBIGTRAINGuy Simon, I found the artifacts at old train station sights... Not at the Mason loco works... I know there are a ton of those abandoned or burned down stations in the UK because of the Bleeching cuts... Just a thought...
      Yeah... I would think US made steam are very rare in the UK... But thats the fun in it... finding those Unicorns and letting the world know they still exist... Well I look forward to your next installment video and maybe saving the US engines as an expo and special video, if you find any, on something extremely rare in the UK... I know the Brits take great pride in their RR's of old... I know there are UA-camrs who do videos on Viaducts and just old road beds from lines closed in the 60's...

I just recently acquired a 'Trainman' employee handbook/rulebook of the D&RGW from 1940, and I have a full set of menus from the Rio Grande Zephyr from the 1980s. An old Rio Grande lantern would be amazing though. I plan to check out the antique dealers around Durango and such places next time I'm over there.
