  • Since 1896 visitors have been travelling to Llanberis, in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park to experience the unique rail journey to the summit of the highest mountain in Wales & England, Snowdon.
The Snowdon Mountain Railway is the only ABT rack & pinion railway in the UK, with original Swiss steam locomotives.
The video captures our visit to the railway over two separate days in June.
I have included sea levels at each location.
We travelled on the train to the summit & back during our fist visit on 4th June. I also filmed a later steam departure at Hebron 1069ft 326 m above sea level.
I returned again early on 6th June to video the first steam departure of the day at 9.30 am with No.5 Moel Siabod climbing at Hebron. The loco we had travelled behind to the summit on the 4th.
Prior to that I captured a light engine test run of No.2 Enid at Hebron. Followed by the first passenger train of the day with Diesel No.10 Yeti.
The sound of steam locomotives climbing to the summit of Snowdon on this rack & pinion track is truly unique.
The majority of the shots were handheld as I could only use a tripod on the line side locations at Hebron.
As the weather was very warm unfortunately there is little steam.
Plus I was eaten alive by midges!
I make no apology that the video is long but it does include our journey to the summit plus shots of locos at Hebron working hard.
    Enjoy!

3:16-3:32, and 13:49-16:38 - what amazing footage of No. 2 "Enid", especially with the locomotive running solo for a test run. Getting footage of the front of the Snowdon Mountain Engines is very difficult as they push the coaches up the mountain. By the way, I visited this railway during my summer holiday last year, and luckily for me, my steam service was provided by No. 6 "Padarn". :)

A stunning production Ger, you had the same loco to the summit as we did....the lineside footage showing how steep the gradients are, and what a hard job it is for staff and loco alike to climb to the summit.....Regards...Bob

Thanks Bob, I really enjoyed filming the trains although it was very hot & there were midges everywhere especially on me! The steam locos seem to have a distinct sound of their own. The gradients are very steep in places. The locos do this work day in day out hammering their way to the summit. Plus, they are all over 100 years old with Padarn 96 years! Hope I last that long, Geraint

I drew a photo of Moel Siabbod, the mountain engines are so beautiful!
Edit: the part in one of the rev w awdrys book where culdee falls down the mountain is actually based on an event that took place shortly after the railway had opened, strong winds caused one of the steam engines to get blown off the track, and down a ravine! (Parts of the engine might still be able to be found, because the locomotive was never recovered)

@@arthurb354also I’m pretty sure the tracks had a problem causing them to snap and then no . 1 “L.A.D.A.S” came off the tracks and skidded down until there was a curve on which she went straight over the edge ! Also the not - so damaged pieces of her was recovered and used to mend the other engines of the line , I’m pretty sure only the motions , frame s, chassis , wheels , side rods , we’re intact when he’s reached the bottom

Just great thanks for sharing! I don't know what else to say! (That reminds me of a forgotten TV programme from the '70s Ryan and Ronnie the "Our House" sketches about an ordinary Welsh family (!!) the husband/father who was called Will kept saying "I don't know what to say!" I wonder if anyone else remembers that I'm showing my age!)

Snowdon really isn't a proper railway in my eyes, not like other heritage lines. It focuses more on just taking the passengers up and down, rather than being heritage and trying to tell its story, rather sad really

    • @caerphillycastle
      @caerphillycastle  2 роки тому

Sorry to to disagree with you but it very much is a heritage Railway. The line itself is uniqiue to the UK built in 1896, the locos all have unique history, other than in Switzerland you will not find such a line in the whole world. It aint sad at all its the opposite! But you are entitled to your opinion.
