Would help a LOT (and make life a lot easier too) if they vented all the waste locomotive STEAM (with coal residues) directly into the blower cage - so that the steam is JETTED FORWARDS, same as if using a water blaster.. Blowing super-heated steam, directly onto that hard packed snow, inside the blower fan casing, would help remove any buildup before it stalled the fan. Also - by NOT RAMMING THE BEGEZUZ out of it at speed, but slowly easing forwards, with heated waste steam and a spinning rotary blower fan - that would make super easy work of what they are making into an almost impossible job - with a mental attitude of - "just push it ahead - as we shove a cold spinning fan into it".

Toller Bericht ! This was a test run, more or less to show that everything works. The tracks are not opened for business at this time of the year. The snow need to smelt and the avalanches need to go down before the track can be opened. This is just a test and it is still too cold for the avalances. The aim was not to free the tracks but to test the machine and its limits and for the crew to get more experience how to operate it. As you see, all the machinery is kept well maintained, clean and lubed. The operators for sure know very well, what they are doing. The expectancy was that the conditions are too hard for the machine, but it managed to cope with it, but with a lot of effort. The machine should be used during and after snow fall, when the snow is fresh.
Bought this for my small back deck in the Eastern Sierra. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxoHYZbq5g9fkcAtinlTqstNlje-UQkCHN We get A LOT of HEAVY snow so I was a bit skeptical but it was worth it! After the first storm of the year this has exceeded expectations! It throws snow very well, even 10-12” + that said the more it piles up the harder it is to maneuver the machine. It is exceptionally light weight and overall exactly what I was looking for. If you have a large amount of snow and a lot of area to clear, you may consider something with a drive engine to help maneuverability, but for decks, second stories, roofs etc, you can’t beat the light weight to great snow throwing ratio. Side note, the chute rotator is a bit flimsy and it initially didn’t seem to work, after a few uses it seems to have loosened up.
Herzlichen Dank! Gruess Oli
Those steam engines were really ahead of their time back in the day. Their simple structure yet complex mechanicals made them truely awesome. They should use steam locomotives to clear snow and use the diesels when got huge things to haul. Love how the steam locomotives sound

Some of the most beautiful country and machines I've seen on UA-cam, thanks for the video. Only thing missing is about 1,000 HP on the engine turning that rotor... But totally get the time period.
Seems like they have a lot of learning to do with the rotary, just as it gets its teeth into the snow it gets pushed too hard and stalls. Seems like the driver of the locomotive thinks he's trying to push a plow through the snow rather than a snowblower.
Oh yeah I'm sure the engineers who spent thousands of combined hours designing and building this thing never thought about going slow. I'm sure thatd work way better
This old engine might not be great a plowing deep snow but I bet it had carried thousands of people to their success to the cities and to the mountains.
Very interesting! I see it uses a gear rack system to allow very slow speeds and still very high torque transfer without slippage, very clever! My understanding of steam engines is that they excel at slow speed, high torque, I wonder then why the locomotive would stall? Perhaps they were running the boiler at reduced pressure so as not to risk damage to the old antiques? Very cool demonstration and amazing that it could handle compact snow at all!
Yeah knowing very little about this whole thing this is my thought as well. Seems like it would be more effective to creep forward slowly keeping the blower rpm high and whittle away at the snow. Kinda like a tunnel boring machine.
The gear rack system "Zahnradbahn" is actually very common in these parts of Europe we have these a lot at steep hills in Germany Switzerland Austria etc
That snow has melted and refroze so many times it's like moving through rock, if this was done right after or during snowfall it would have been much better 😀
Interesting/informative/entertaining. Excellent photography job enabling viewers to better understand how the locomotive 🚂 pushes the spinning plow through the snow. ⛄⛄. Region reminds me of Northern California mountains.
One thing that I noticed when the fan became clogged with the packed snow was that they had no steam or hot water pipes around the cutter box. Other steam rotaries that I have seen videos of have had those for reducing the clogging effect when cutting heavy and packed snow. Films made by the Southern Pacific on Donner Pass in the 1950's have shown their rotaries in action. I believe that they had steam pipes around the intake fan. OY, on the Cumbres and Toltec, deals with this same heavy spring snow pack when it is used to open that railroad in the spring after it being closed for several months. There are several videos on YT of it in action. When my grandfather worked on the Northern Pacific, he said that they sometimes used explosive charges to loosen the snow so that the rotaries could chew into it. On the highway snow crew in Oregon, we had the rotary plows with the horizontal rotating cutters feeding the fan and the only times we got clogged were once when one of the guys picked up a chunk of a fallen tree and once when another operator found a parked car under the snow by ripping its bumper off. We had shear pins in the shaft couplers that would break if you hit something that solid and protect the gear box from damage. Then we had to dig the snow out, pull the tree trunk out and replace the pins. The car bumper had to be removed with a torch.
yes agree above get on with it that engineer operating the snow machine could do with six arms to do what he was doing so slow im sure it was meant to use man power not steam power.

"hey hans, how do we clear the snow off of the railroad tracks"
hans: "BIG FAN"
I think you would like to see how huge tunnels are dug.
"REALLY BIG FAN"

Only thing missing is about 1,000 HP on the engine turning that rotor... But totally get the time period.
believe me this thing has tremendous amounts of power , the issue is that the snow is wet and the loco behind is jamming it in
Seems like they have a lot of learning to do with the rotary, just as it gets its teeth into the snow it gets pushed too hard and stalls. Seems like the driver of the locomotive thinks he's trying to push a plow through the snow rather than a snowblower.
I was wondering the same thing.
surely going at a slow constant speed would work better than keep compacting it every time it goes back and forth into the snow..
Oh yeah I'm sure the engineers who spent thousands of combined hours designing and building this thing never thought about going slow. I'm sure thatd work way better

The car bumper had to be removed with a torch.
yes agree above

that engineer operating the snow machine could do with six arms to do what he was doing
so slow im sure it was meant to use man power not steam power.
Amazing!!!!🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰😍😍😍😍😍😍
Amazing vídeo!! Congratulations! Pouso Alegre/MG Brasil
You people are great 👌👍 love from INDIA 🇮🇳 ❤️
Ganz grosses Kino :-) :-) :-)
Ja ja!! sehr schöne Aufnahmen und sehr erfolgreiche Bearbeitung !!!
It's an interesting machine!
Despite being an antiquated tech the steam engine really outlived other techs who are developed during it's prime
Although different, steam generators are technically steam engines too and they will continue to be prime technology for many centuries.
Thanks! Where do you live?
Majestic! I was pleased to be able to see, albeit 2nd hand, such a venerable piece of engineering in action. 👍🏾
pretty sure it wasn't designed to clear out 8 ft deep, wet, heavy, end-of-seaon snow that has gone thru dozens of melt/freeze cycles. badass machine tho. 😎
They have these machines on the railroad in the high Sierras of California giant steam driven snowblower
I think there is only one left in operation in the sierras (rotary)
@@irv999 they do at least blast the snow
not like this pathetic machine.
not machine fault just the user and the designee could have got it together a bit better.
Gratulation
Very interesting video, thank you for sharing. This old machines are full of poetry : fortunately there are guys to preserve them and make them work, it is part of their heritage, well done! And too bad for the madmen of "progress" which will make them die quickly and "efficiently".
All in the name of efficiency. You can never have enough efficiency when it's your job to turn a profit.
