tips for your spring rolls: there are bigger wrappers available, so if you want more veggies those are better. another thing, cut the shrimp in half, it won't make it so bulky, and it'll still be delicious.
your editing is amazing and i love the storytelling aspects of your vlogs and how authentic you are :) as someone who also works in tech and loves making videos too i'm so happy i came across your channel!! can't wait for more videos!💛
One of the big differences of being a software engineer in Brazil is the working hours... my working hours are from 8 am to 6 pm. It's insane... I hope my English becomes good enough as soon as possible so that I can work for a US company 😊 I love your videos, best regards!
It's probably not the country but just the company! My manager knows I like to work 10 - 6pm rather than 9 - 5, and he's alright with it. Some companies/managers have stricter work times so it all varies! Thank you so much for watching!!
I love the half vlog half sit down because it feels less monotone and it's nice seeing how you put together your life and balance everything at once also! I find it very inspiring
first haha :) just wanted to say you’re killing it with UA-cam and are a huge inspiration! I get so excited seeing your videos in my inbox. much love 💕
Really cool episode. I love how mature is your thinking about working for big companies and how you see yourself inside such organisations. Definitely such format of vlogs is perfect and suits you and your audience. Thanks a lot!
Can’t wait to see “day in the life of a startup CEO” 😉 I want to start a company too but I’m on a visa in a different country so I’m pretty sure I’d get deported! You make a lot of good points about not working for big tech, I’ve never really thought about the drawbacks just laser focused on the clout/money/perks, will try to keep in mind when I start job hunting again next month
omggg “day in the life of a startup ceo” 😊😊 hahaha yay! Im glad you found it useful! Just some insight to consider, but it ultimately comes down to what you want for your career :) a few years at big tech won’t make or break it! Good luck with the job hunt!
What a small world! I’m pretty sure I bought a book from you back in the college days lol. Awesome to see you have a growing channel like this. Best of luck in your tech journey! ✌️
hahah thanks! I think it comes off better than it really is. This comment made me realize - I definitely have moments of procrastination on the day to day which is only made worse by the context switching, but it's hard to procrastinate on filming days since filming and work take up so much of my mental capacity
Wow Marsela, what a wonderful video this was. Very informative which gave me totally different take on things. Thank you for putting so much effort in all your videos 🙏
I absolutely understand your point of view, I decided to work in a startup for more less the same reasons. Although it's true that each side has its advantages and disadvantages
really enjoyed this vlog, especially the discussion at the end! navigating your career as a software engineer isn’t easy but it was nice to hear your perspective! you’re such an inspiration✨✨
Hi Marsela! you are doing a good job. Love all ur vlogs 😊 Do consider something similar to this video to cover both vlogs + some talks that you particularly wanna share with ur fans. I like that u love to start ur day with yoga. It's great to know about the lifestyle of people from another end of the world.
Absolute perfect video. Just a quick question marsela, what is the name of the brand of your long sleeves on the timestamp of 2minutes-8minutes onwards. Seems awesome though
Good insight. Thanks Marsela!! You motivate me to keep going on my coding journey. When I picture my life a year or two from now, I envision something like yours but in Denver. ☺💜
I feel so bad that you had to bring pepper spray when walking through the park. Really made me realize how safe the place is where I live and that I should be thankful for that.
Hi, could you make a video talking about the top tech companies and where they are in Los Angeles County? (I'm a software developer from Brazil and my goal is to live in Los Angeles in a few years)
Your career and savings philosophy is very similar to that of Joma Tech. He preaches being financially stable before quitting your tech 9-5 to pursue your true passion
Hey I have a quick question at 16:38 when you said " you could of just stayed at google until you graduated " does this mean your still in school or or attending college while being an software engineer ?
omg, this was so helpful. Thank you for giving your insight and sharing your thought process with declining your offer at Google. I just started my coding journey in November 2021 and I can find it so intimidating thinking about companies like Google! But I loved everything that you mentioned! Thank you again for sharing! Random question, have any of your coworkers gone to a coding bootcamp at all? I'm always curious to know! Thanks again!
No I'm not a team lead! I'm a standard software engineer :) I just needed to reschedule a 1-on-1 with my manager since our normal one was cancelled + I needed to prep for sprint planning because I had a few ideas for tickets / things that needed to be done so I went ahead and made tickets for that! Not strict requirements of my job but good to do nonetheless!
I’ve been watching your videos for the past few months and I really love your vlogs. You are doing a great job . You're awesome I like you very much. I get so excited seeing your videos in my inbox. much love 💕 honestly I am saying that I love you so much. You are the real beauty with brain combination. Thanks for the Informational video, Enjoyed it .💖💖🌹🌹👌
My M1 MacBook is my personal one (you can see it in the video editing clip towards the end!) but I have a separate work laptop that is provided by my company and that one is not one of the 2021 models
Can you make a video about what you typically do when you’re in a funk when you’re trying to solve a difficult bug? One of my biggest fears about starting my full time job haha. And any other tips you have for women starting their first software dev jobs!
It's not as hard as you think :), and if you can't reproduce the bug, just report that. It may be a bug that so rarely occurs that it's not worth fixing.
that's valid ^ but I also find that it pays to be a problem solver than a problem reporter. If you happen to encounter one that has nothing to do with your current ticket / is an existing bug - I'd spend like 30 minutes investigating and trying to get to the bottom of it. It's great if you let the team know "there's this bug, this is how to fix it, I'll make a ticket for that", and you can move on. That's better than just reporting a bug imo - but definitely report even if you can't get to the bottom of it. If it's an area of the project you're not familiar with, I'd ping the people who are more familiar to see if it's a known bug. If you're stuck while trying working on your ticket, there's more tips I have! But maybe a video with tips would be a good idea!
As a jr dev, my work days get super slow before a release as the managers don't want to overcommit and fall short on delivering on release day. Any advice on what to do during this downtime other than chill? Lol
My advice is that there are a few things you can do to fill your time. If you have newer members on your team, make yourself available to them if they need help or have questions. You can do some ad-hoc knowledge shares. Other things you can do is to read some documentation that maybe you haven't read before. Learn some new things about some of the systems you haven't really had experience working in. This is most applicable if you work at a bigger company where different teams handle different systems. Lastly, you can always look at some of the code you've been working on or will work on and try to see where you can add test cases or refactor to reduce tech debt. You may not have the opportunity to actually make those changes if your managers don't want new code pushed before a release, but you can start jotting down ideas of where improvements can be made.
^^ agree with TJ! Also a great thing to do is do read up on new technologies / what's going on in the industry outside your company / new technologies that could be helpful for your team to start using / different architecture designs / the list goes on!
Thank you for that information! Im a college student and I think I would also prefer to work at a smaller company as opposed to something like google or facebook. Would love to learn as much as possible for later in my career!
