Don’t be terrified!! Just remember they didn’t hire you thinking you’d know everything from the start, a huge part of being a software engineer is learning as you go. You’ll be fine! Ask questions when you need to. I always learn a new system by doing small tasks, ask your manager for small tickets that will get you familiar with the systems

Hi Marsela, great informative video! When you started out as a software engineer, did you experience any imposter syndrome? and how much of what you do technically(coding, software design, etc.) did you learn on the job vs college?
I’m a senior software engineer at a large tech company and I still feel like an imposter at least once a week. Don’t give up, focus on your goals, and fake it till you make it! You’ve got this.

I think at my school there was different methods of re-taking classes, I’m not super familiar with the process. I’d recommend asking your school advisor!! And if possible, re-take the class! I always recommend talking to the professor if you’re struggling. Show up in office hours, ask them for help, let them know what you’re not understanding, and ask them for additional resources!
Yes to all the points Marsela shared! But I will also add, if possible you can try retaking the course with a different professor, it helps sometimes. And honestly just keep going, there’s a huge learning curve with CS but you will definitely get it eventually!
There is about 1 minute what software engineer really does, and 21 minutes that you are just talking to camera. This is the sunny side what a professional really does. You have to admit, this is a day when you have actually no work. In weeks and months when a release is going to be out, you actually don't go down for eating fancy food, don't stop work at 2 pm for play with plasticine. You actually stay in your chair at 8 and don't get up till 5pm. I don't wanna break someone's dream to be a software engineer, just put attention to the other side of this job.
Hi Marsela, do you work with a QA engineer at your company or do you test the code yourself? Also, does a Business Analyst create the tickets to be worked on? Did you finish watching squid game? I didn't like the ending :(
Engineers write unit tests and sometimes integration tests! For teams that have strong impact on user experience (like mine), there’s QA engineers that do manual QA, automated QA, and manage the releases! We generally get the projects from our PM but the engineers break down the project and create the technical tickets. I did finish Squid Game! I appreciated the ending more after watching some analysis videos on yt but I agree 😂
This video is extremely insightful! Im a recent engineering graduate and this video has been so insightful! Thank you so much for the time to make this. As a software engineer, do you ever require more than the 40 hour work week to complete the necessary tasks you have for the week? If so, does this happen and how many more hours are usually spent?
Aw thank you, appreciate that! Working overtime doesn’t happen frequently for me - but the holiday period is our busiest time so I think I’m experiencing it more nowadays! I usually balance by working later at night or working a few hours on the weekend. It doesn’t happen frequently so when it’s busy period, I don’t mind putting in the extra effort
