    Great review, no kiss ass bs that happens in some videos where they just sing the praises and don't tell you any bad points. Straight to the point, telling the pros and cons of the mic and an example of how the mic sounds. I wish all reviews were like this. Great job.Btw that track was great, i really loved the feel of that.

    If you are thinking about buying a Neumann and can't afford it don't bother with the 102 or 103. I bought the tlm107 years after regrettably selling my 70's U87. It does have the character a Neumann should have unlike the 102 and 103 which sound like knockoffs of their own namesake. It is the most affordable real Neumann.

      I second that! I use the TLM107 for VO, which I do for a living. I sold my U87Ai recently, which was fine but never the ideal match for my voice. The TLM107 is a modern, more open interpretation of the TLM170 / TLM193 / U89 realm. Good value, indeed.

    Probably the best sonic comparisons I have heard on any channel. I do orchestral recordings, and the drums-guitar-drums-guitar on the others just does not cut it. Plus they use inferior equipment in the signal path. Keep up the good work!

    Alec, a great review, as always. And like so many, I also come to your channel for your music. As for this review: I *really* like the top end of this mic, nice and open top but zero harshness, but then, have you ever heard a Neumann NOT sound great through a Neve? I haven't! That's a match made in audio heaven :) Cheers ...

    • @alecbrits
      @alecbrits  2 роки тому

      Thanks for the kind words again! :) I have missed having this mic in the studio so much. I reckon a pair these would always be working here. They have a totally different tone to any other Neumann, pairing it up with a Neve is great, but I wish I tried it with the Neumann V402, that would be an insane combo.

Really well made. Coming to the mic, I like the versatility it has. I am not planning purchasing many mics. Perhaps just one but with good quality. Loved the track, your voice sounded awesome. I'll sub, really nice production quality and good info. Only a couple of things to add:
    1. It's simple and maybe it was a style choice, but I would have liked to see the unboxing part rotated (just in post) so that it isn't upside down to us and
    2. Can we get extra tests without music in the background so we can just hear the mic? Along with some comparisons with other mics you have there
    It would make a good reference mic but you might want to consider adding a cheaper mic for others too, so we get a better sense of where it would place in the grand scheme of microphones.
    Great vid anyway, there isn't much on this mic so every bit helps. Thanks!

    Enjoy what you’re doing. Welcome addition to the you tube landscape.
    I like the idea of having a sort of standard set of gear to keep things comparable as you grow your collection of review videos... but at the same time, I think a rigid adherence to this idea can sometimes waste an opportunity to show a particular piece of gear in its best light, for the sake of keeping things “equal”.
    All this being said, I wasn’t really wowed by the 107... listening on hi quality headphone amp/cans. BUT, the idea I might get more chances to hear this microphone through different scenarios is exciting.
    99.9854% of the time... There’s no such thing as a bad (sound wise) piece of gear... just better/worse applications for it?

    Thank you Alec for the great review! Your voice and all the instruments came out very nice and proof that the TLM 107 is a great all-rounder mic.
    In contrast to the very first comment to this video I really liked the piano lick ambiance sound to accompany your explanations.
    This piano sparkle was so tastefully placed in the background, very wide and distant, that it didn't disturb your talking at all but gave the whole review some magic touch!
    How did you get this piano sounding so wide, since it was only recorded in omni by this single mic? Just a good reverb, or some further tricks? (I'm really curious) ;-)
    All the best!

Just looking for my all purpose mic that doesn’t scrape chalkboards in the upper mids when something loud hits it. I’d be very curious your thoughts if you’ve ever worked on the 49 compared to this one and maybe your long term assessment of the 107 at this point! Great review and track man! I actually purchased this mic a while back as I needed an ‘all purpose’ microphone and I can honestly say that this microphone fits that role very well. I’ve used it in a few different scenarios such as on acoustic guitar, vocals and drum overheads and I wasn’t really disappointed in any of those applications. It gives you that authentic ‘Neumann’ sound and even without any fancy preamps you can still get a lot out of this microphone by going straight in your DAW. For the price, build quality, tonal characteristics and multiple polar pattern options the 107 is well worth the investment.

    The Demo sounds very nice here over my Genelecs! Are the Neumann Headphones critical enough for Tracking Vocals by yourself?
    I've got the Beyerdynamics DT1770 Pro and if I record myself everything is sounding to good in my Headphones. But when I'm listen back over my Genelecs Speakers than I can really tell if a Take was good or not. It's hard for me to make critical decicion on my Headphones while I'm tracking myself and I don't know if it has something to do with my Beyerdynamics..

      Thank you! The Neumanns have helped a lot with tracking, specially with mid range choices and click bleed. With regards to good takes and performance, I’ve found that sometimes flipping the phase on the vocal channel helps me feel a little less distracted by the take, it’s not every time, but sometimes that helps. Inevitably I still comp the takes quite aggressively. Hope that helps!

    The LEDs lifespan is usually 50,000 hours or just under 6 years of continuous use. Given that Neumann mics usually last decades and are purchased as professional workhorses, it's very sensible of Neumann to turn the LEDs of after some timeout.

      Thank you so much! I have tried the TLM 49 in the past and have always loved it. The lack of additional polar patterns and pads makes the mic slightly less flexible, but the slightly darker tone makes it a really seductive choice for brighter sources. Trying it in front of kicks is also great if the mic pre has a good sounding pad. Hope this helps!

    Very important question: how would you say the colour compares to say the TLM 103? The 103 is a very silvery nickel but the 107 almost looks like it has a dull green tint to it compared to the other Neumanns. Is that the case or does it just seem that way in the video lighting?

    Do you still have the TLM107? What are your thoughts after 2 years? Did you end up using the 107 as a reference to compare to other mics? I would love to see more comparisons to the 107. I am considering purchasing the 107 for VO work. I am looking for a fast, neutral and modern mic such as the Earthworks Icon Pro-the Ethos is a bit too strong in the low end for me personally, as I am not looking for the late night radio DJ sound.
    Wishing you the very best, staying kind, and highly anticipating your upcoming Neumann MT48 review!

      Thanks so much for the kind words! :) the 107 was a review unit. So I had to send it back. It’s still high on my list to have a pair of them as my all round large diaphragm beasts.
      I think it would be a beautiful voice over mic as none of the things that I have mixed where a 107 was used were too harsh, bloated or difficult to sculpt.
      Depending on what kind of voice you have and what kind of mic pre/compressor chain you out with it, it will likely be a really solid choice.
      I’ve really been enjoying the earthworks ethos for my voice over stuff, but perhaps that’s cause I like the bass. :)

    Hi Alec, first fo all I have to say your songwriting/performance/singing/production is top notch! I mean really top notch (coming from someone that has been doing this for over 15 years). And great vulnerable emotion in your voice! I really connect with your work (in other videos too) - would be good to connect musically if you're interested. I landed on this page because I've been looking for a mic upgrade and the TLM 107 has been a high contender (among TLM 49, Townsend Sphere L22, Aston Origin though on a different price range). I take it you really recommend this TLM 107 mic? I personally like your voice on this even more than the U47 FET. Would be great to hear back from you/recommendations.

    • @alecbrits
      @alecbrits  3 роки тому +1

      Hi John!I do recommend the TLM107, it’s a really great all rounder, with no real drawback. The other mics you have suggested are all really solid choices as well, how ever, the best thing to do if you can, is to demo the mics to see which feel best for the applications and your room. After all the mics I have used, a pair of TLM107’s would be a great fit for a great allrounder set here in the studio.

    • @johnmoukarzel2544
      @johnmoukarzel2544 3 роки тому +1

      @@alecbrits Thanks for the reply Alec! And for the recommendation. I think I am going to go for the TLM 107. I like the "vintage" sound emulation of the TLM 49 however I also doubt/wonder if I would not want that in certain songs (the bass seems to be slightly rolled off while the mids are higher). I'd rather have full transparency (I'm hoping like the TLM 107) and then EQ and do any sort of colouration afterwards. What I mean is I'd rather have bass and have to EQ it out as opposed to I feel there is a" lack" of bass with the TLM 49 for a certain song and I now need to push more "noise" up. For me it depends on each song and style as well. Townsend seems great, but I'd rather the EQ be fiddled after recording *once* instead of twice (their system is shaping the EQ for each mic simulation) so Might still fiddle after recording again. The mic is just for me - it's not a studio - so I just need it to work well for me. You're absolutely right about testing out the mics before hand - that's the best solution. With lockdown and shops being closed it's hard to do so... especially them being funny about returning open mics. A few shops I spoke to said once it's opened it's yours! Thanks for the reply.

    I've had a pair of these for about 3 months. Mainly been using them in a figure-8 mode with 90-degree phase cancellation configuration. Recording in a non-treated tile room, the isolation is amazing, and the vocals are super clear. The mic really shines when you give it a few extra db in the mix. It has that smooth balanced feel of a TLM-193/170... but is more suited to capturing my voice and guitar without any EQ. My 193 is amazing but requires EQ in many cases. I'm continuing to experiment with them, but so far I am convinced that Neumann has made a mic with reference class performance, and disguised it in the "102/103" range of mics. However, it's completely unrelated to those mics in everyway. The capsule is 1 of a kind, and it's the only edge terminated mic in the Neumann range. Curious if you've continued to use this mic, and what you've been learning about it-- especially as regards it's sonic performance in different recording use-cases.

    I‘m sitting on the fence between the Neumann TLM107 and the Austrian Audio OC818. After watching comparison videos, I like the sound of both. Neumann‘s build quality really really speaks to me. On the other hand, the OC818 Polar Patterns & Terminator-AI might help with bad room acoustics. The option for dual channel recording expands its use cases, especially for an easy allround set-up. (Vocals, Transient Percussion Samples, etc. with one mic?)
