  • HTC's 2016 flagship is a stellar smartphone from the company that brought you the aluminum unibody - but with downgraded speakers and a camera that's just okay, it's not quite the Perfect Ten its name implies. Still, it's hard to escape the conclusion that the HTC 10's shortcomings would be totally forgivable ones ... if only the price was a little lower. The HTC 10 has been on the market for months, MrMobile has used it for a large portion of those months, and you wouldn't stop asking for a review in the comments - so settle in for Michael Fisher's HTC 10 review!

    [ABOUT THIS REVIEW]
    This HTC 10 review was published after approximately 90 days with an HTC 10 review device on loan to MrMobile from HTC. The device was tested on T-Mobile US in Greater Boston, New York City, and rural New York State. It was paired with an Android Wear watch for the entirety of the test period.

      +DuxDub Studios I know I'm not the poster but I'm so excited I have to tell you about it! have it for 3 months. it's very fast, no slowdown at all. Sound is great! plug in some headphones, you'll be impressed. Build quality is very solid, the back has a smooth curve that flows into the chamfers. It's a really great phone

      Same here :D As a former Galaxy S7E user, I have to say that I'm quite impressed with the HTC 10, especially the audio quality! Of course, there are shortcomings that I wish HTC would have done differently, overall I'm happy to use the HTC 10, and recommend it to anyone who's looking for a good Android smartphone :)

      +Minh Pham with HTC the sum of its parts is greater than its whole. Samsung has a great phone but their features are more flashy and attention getting. The 10 is extremely optimized for the chip and software. The sound is great and it has adoptable storage which is pretty handy. These features don't bring as much attention as Samsung. it's more subtle. it feels like they took great features from both Apple and Android.

    HTC would sell a lot more phones if they would actually get the 10 into stores to be sold... Haven't seen it anywhere. Meanwhile, best buy has the s7, the g5, the moto z, and even the note 7. Hell they had the note 7 in stores before it was even out, meanwhile here we are in august with no htc 10 when its been out for months already

    • @ducis3446
      @ducis3446 8 років тому +9

      I have never seen people with a Moto Z or an HTC 10 for that matter. I swear it's all Samsung and Apple these daus.

    • @ducis3446
      @ducis3446 8 років тому +1

      Oh, I misread your comment, but yeah it's ridiculous how long I've had to wait for my HTC 10 to ship to a Best Buy store. The approximate time for it to ship is almost 2 weeks... 2 WEEKS.

    • @thomasfisher1829
      @thomasfisher1829 8 років тому

      DuxDub Studios I work in a best buy, and I can tell you samsung's marketing is definitely more prevalent then LG or motorola, but we at least have them in store to show people, which is more than can be said about the HTC.
      That said, a lot more people would also by the moto z if it wasn't a verizon exclusive. Myself being one of those people. I won't buy the regular moto over the axon, but I'd buy the z force. Unfortunately I have At&t, so it won't matter anyway.

    • @ducis3446
      @ducis3446 8 років тому

      +Thomas Fisher I was about to buy the Moto Z Force, but the lack of a headphone jack killed it for me. I don't like relying on an adapter for my headphone needs.

    • @thomasfisher1829
      @thomasfisher1829 8 років тому

      DuxDub Studios That is one thing that definitely sucks about it. I can't tell you the last time I used headhphones with my phone though, so I personally wouldn't mind as much.

  • @CaptainBlitz

    Fun fact: The HTC 10 supports adoptable storage. So you can throw in a 32GB SD card coupled with the 32 on board to get a total of 64GB.
    I don't usually ask for thumbs up but it'd be nice if we showed this info to people reading the comments.

      Alex Gonzalez - The 10 is a great handset, a top-notch successor to the flawed One M9, but unfortunately, a close to the amazing M-Series "Tank Flagships" as a whole... The device that replaces this, namely the "U", not "U Ultra" or "U Play", is more in line with that particular series, some of which we have already seen - only not as big... Knowing that, I'll be holding on to my 10 for as long as I possibly can, maybe into the third, or even fourth year!

    Well let's put it this way (I'm an HTC 10 owner, so I'll just get that out of the way). If the HTC 10, a phone made of solid aluminum, excellent built quality with 24 bit sound DAC/AMP into it, should be $400, shouldn't the G5 be at the same price? They are charging $700 for a phone made of plastic covered with paint and primer, and an additional ~$100 extra (or was it $130), for a DAC/AMP module which the HTC 10 already has in its $700 price. Nobody bats an eye. Yes, the S7 ticks a lot of the boxes, but doesn't offer high resolution sound, and its speakers are pure shit due to the water proofing. It may not be a deal breaker for kids who look for a phone they can get into the bath tub, with a shiny candy color display to play asphalt 8 on, but for me, it is, because I'm a grown up, and I don't bathe with my phone. I also value the overall experience, and feel of my smartphone, and by comparison, the button feedback and how the S7 / G5 feel in hand, is like a toy compared to the HTC 10. That's just me though.

      You are correct, but unfortunately not ordinary people prefer over sharpened, over saturated photons and an unrealistic display over natural photos and natural display. Because majority don't know the value of pure things.

      +Rocky Saxena You might want to be careful with the underwater shooting. If I'm not wrong, Samsung warranty does NOT cover water damage. It is covered only if you buy their Protection Plus plan along with the phone.

    When I watch tech reviews, the videos are usually the reviewer inside his studio talking about how this phone is better than the other. Blah blah blah.
    But this dude? Man!
    Just look at the quality and the work he has put into it.
    I mean the rest of the videos have half as much as effort put into them!
    The quality your output Michael? I feel your effort. I feel like this is your job. I feel happy when I watch your videos.
    And believe me, this I never got with the other reviewers.

  • @Thorsten_0911

    My reasons for buying this phone over any competitor like the Galaxy S7 for example (while coming from the Galaxy S4):
    1) The back-, home- and menu-buttons are hardware and not on-screen (why should I give up that extra screen space when I got that space below the screen anyways?)
    2) Expandable storage (I got a SanDisk 200GB microSDXC card full with music and movies, can't get any cheaper than that)
    3) It's snapdragon-based - so CyanogenMod isn't out of the question if I get tired of HTC's Sense UI. (That's why the Galaxy S7 dropped out for me)
    4) I am an audiophile and listen to a lot of music with expensive headphones so the built in processor / DAC blows my ears right off.
    ...
    and so on

      Well the S7 has some good point : amazing battery/screen, but laggy Touchwizz (yes it still a thing after all this years). But Samsung is samsung, they have a great marketing power, HTC don't, and when people go for 700€ in a phone, they go with a apple or samsung product, not a HTC or Sony one, that's why both are in big pain selling their flagships.
      And HTC might do the same error with the Nexus this year (I hope not).

    About a year or two ago my brother got his first smartphone, a cherry red HTC One M8. I fell in love with it, especially since it wasnt mine, the design was outstanding, and he always bragged about the speakers. Then the M9 came out with a really bad camera, whatever. now he has the Galaxy S7, and has cracked the front and back of it 6 ways to Sunday (apologies if I said that wrong) point is, HTC does make nice phones, but now so does Samsung, and a few others at lower pricing options. Great video Michael

      This is exactly why people aren't buying it. HTC do not have the branding they once did, the only brands people will break the bank for are Apple and Samsung. It's got more to do with HTC's poor position as a company/brand rather than the product itself. Many of my friends who only really know Samsung and Apple are often pleasantly surprised with my HTC 10, that it offers the same experienced/performance when they've never heard of the brand.

    Really missing the front firing speakers. Having an s6 edge plus after my HTC One M8, made me miss the front firing speakers and the sleekness of the M8. I dont like the home buttons on phones these days, and the finger print scanner is not on my wishlist anyway, so I'll probably try the Alcatel 4s over this HTC 10. Great review as always Michael! You hit it right on the nail... I won't go back to HTC until they bring back the speakers and do away with the home button. They thought being more like an iphone or a galaxy phone would increase their chances to hit it big in the market, but they lost their die hard consumers in the process.

      I was on the same fence. Went to AT&T to hold and hear
      the S7, I didn’t like it. The sound was crap, very similar to the iPhone 5S I replaced
      and it didn’t sit well in the hand. Opted for the HTC 10 Unlocked from HTC with
      a GREAT discount and love the phone.
      Cons:
      Screen viewing outside with polarized sunglasses
      is a task to rotate phone to view and use. Accessory cases are limited and clunky- depends
      on what you’re looking for thoMetal back is slick
      Pros:
      Smooth operatingNot locked to a PC for changes like iPhone“Ok Google”Split screen function-YES you can operate 2 Apps
      same time with drag and drop functionGreat pictures and videoSound is great from on-board speaker &
      HeadphonesYou can customize your “sound experience” with hearing
      tests and other great functionsHeadphone jack is on topFast ChargingFully customizable Uh-Oh planGlobal use Anything else you’d need out of the box, it’s

    I purchased the HTC 10 over other brands as it offered a DisplayPort . HDMI out on a phone, is "must" have feature for me, as I like to plug my phone into my spare work monitor, hotel TVs for media play back and there no lag when playing games. Aslo, the HTC 10 is very easy to root and currently have ViperOne on my phone. It's a shame that a lot of phones are not offering HDMI out options these days for us media and on the go people. I also love the HTC 10 hi-fi headphones, better than my IE80 which are sitting on the shelf now.

    I look at four important things when choosing an Android handset, especially a flagship...1) Heavy use durability (time between factory resets - if needed at all - to get rid of compiled garbage that slows down operation - This is you, Samsung, LG, Google, and Motorola!)... 2) Multitasking speed (especially now with upcoming Nougat split screen functions)... 3) Support for adoptable storage (in Marshmallow and Nougat - Are you paying attention, Samsung and LG?)... and 4) Superb on board audio quality output through standard headphone jacks (without installing a third-party EQ app - See this too, Sammy?)... The HTC 10 fills those shoes for me!

    Always been a fan of HTC, even thought it does NOT get the recognition of Samsung or Motorola.
    A good friend of mine got the HTC EVO and I was impressed back then. The EVO's kickstand was worth the price alone!!
    My first smartphone was the Atrix by Motoroloa, then the Pantech Discover which I REALLY liked: all the bells/whistles as the Galaxy 5 but $150.00 less!!
    2 years ago I got the HTC M One 8, which I liked: the design, all metal body, etc
    Was very disappointed finding out AT&T wouldn't carry the M 10, so I got an un-locked version with $100.00 off promotion. AT&T put SIM chip in new phone, gave me 150.00 store credit. Found out my bill will be cut by 1/3 because I'm NOT on contract.
    I like the native Google UI, makes it SO much easier without all that bloatware. I plan to SLOWLY add previous apps. The new BoomSound speaker configuration takes getting used to, but I'm VERY happy with the phone's sound, look, performance. . .
    HTC if marketed well they would blow Samsung out of the water. They make GOOD SOLID phones.

    Hey Michael, great to see you doing so well flying solo! I've been an HTC fan for a run of phones, kept my m7 for over 3 years. Have had the 10 since it's release and I think it's great. Camera, for me, is terrific, sound is great in headphones and excellent overall, but, yes, miss the all out front speakers. I feel like there's a sophistication, overall, that the samsung has never had. Weird quirk that drives me crazy. The screen completely disappears when I'm wearing sunglasses. Have you noticed? Thanks!

    i love my htc 10, i too bought it the first month, and i too hate how its not getting the respect and looks it deserves..i think HTC may have hurt its brand beyond repair in the general public's eyes with the M series tho. that and like you said, samsung phones are the more visible, and sexier pick, but the htc 10 deserves to stand right along with the note7 and s7 as the premier android flagships available this year...oh well..i'll just hold onto my little secret driver and enjoy it even if i cant convince anyone else to with me

    I would say that the Moto X Pure is still the phone I'm working towards. Let's just say that I thought I could pull one on Verizon by getting a device agreement on a Note 5 back in Oct of 2015 and sell it to get the Moto X Pure super cheap. I quickly found out that the promotional discount meant that it had to stay activated on that line in order to keep receiving my $15 discount each month. Lesson learned and still wanting my Moto X Pure bad! Hopefully I get it before this gets discontinued

    They could save the Boom sound Speakers by inserting the Fingerprint scanner in the Power button just like what the Nextbit did with their Robin. If they had done this change and if the phone costs 100$ less than this, maybe this would have been the best phone on the market right now.
