sometimes it feels HTC are the only innovators in the market better than everyone let me explain what ever they did with their products the industry as a whole followed it 1.all metal design on M7 when competition was on plastic (notification light inside micro drilled speaker grill was dope) hope someone remembers it 2. stereo sound (boomsound) which became industry standard later 3.duo camera on m8 one as shooter and other for recoding depth of field for bokeh effect was a great idea and the industry is catching up now only the software then lead to it's downfall 4. 3d camera shooter on evo 3d was way ahead of the time 5. fingerprint sensor on HTC one max even before iPhone 5s 6. how can one forget the first Android phone ,first Windows phone , first 4g phone and many small things things such as clicking picture while recording video simultaneously, lock screen widget, blinkfeed, ois in front camera, now the 3d audio namely were somewhat industry first they really nailed the core of the user experience that too without bloatware and the phones were gimmick proof which is complimented by their industrial design the only thing which lead to the downfall of the company is their management and their marketing they were the first but never capitalized on it if they had got their management right during the m8 period we might have seen more ground breaking innovations from the company rather than just edge sense
Yep. Just like TV's too all Samsung does is copy other people. Sony and HTC have been so innovative with all their new features. They get ridiculed for it. Then a year later big companies like Samsung and Apple will steal it. Then advertise the hell out of it and make it seem like it's amazing. Pay off big reviewers and there's your sales. Companies like Apple and Samsung spend most of their money on marketing, unlike the real tech companies who spend it on R&D. They either flat out steal it or fine-tune the features and software a bit more then mass market it as the greatest thing ever. Will never buy or support corrupt companies like LG, Samsung, Apple etc.
I thought they should have left the kickstand on their phone. The dual Beats speakers was classic, wish they left it. Removing the 3.5mm headphone jack, aka the iPhone was a lame ass move. I still love their phones though

Samsung 1) They first brought Amoled screens to smartphones and now it is mainstream 2) They brought multitasking to android first via touchwiz dual window before Google took it with nougat. 3) Galaxy SII was one of the first if not the very first Android smartphone with dual core processor. 4) Samsung is the only android smartphone manufacturer with their own processor division (Exynos). Neither HTC has one nor Sony or LG. Apple 1) Their software support obliterates any Android competitor 2) Their A series processors are often faster than any Snapdragon, Exynos or Mediatek 3) iPad outright destroys all Android tablet competitors whether in raw processing power or App support. 4) Video recording in iPhones is still superior to android phones

This phone seems legit to me! Great camera, audio, display, performance, build quality.. and a decent price. If the squeeze feature is a gimmick, we can simply ignore it, since it is not contributing negatively in any way.

*Dashing*Graham Cluck Those of us who follow HTC, pretty much knew that a replacement for the 10 would come in the Spring, despite the U Ultra release early in the year, especially since HTC always uses the latest processor in their flagships. U Ultra is a good phone that was wrongfully bashed. My biggest beef with it is it doesn't work on Verizon. U11 pretty much ticks all the boxes and works on all carriers.
after switching from Samsung note 5 to the HTC 10 and seeing the great performance the amazing audio the fast software updates and solid build quality I'm a fan now
Goran Petrovic I do wish I had the U11s speakers on my 10. It's the only thing I'm jelly over. But I have my Sennheisers and pretty much any set of real speakers on the planet to make up for it.
Everyone loves the pixel because of its incredible software, smooth performance, and camera. Here come the u11 with just as good a camera, same great performance, incredible audio that blows away the pixel, and capacitive buttons that allow more screen to be used, oh, and some themes, and people wanna shit on it. Plus it is significantly cheaper than the pixel. Okay 👌 I'll be loving the u11 while everyone else is getting sick of their laggy ass s8 and soon to be boot looping g6. Hell, the competition isn't even running 7.1!
Ahhh good old HTC, Probably the best phone producer with the most underrated phones of all time. I almost never see anyone with an HTC device yet they produce some of the best out there. I remember how revolutionary the HTC M7 was back in the game with the all metal unibody design and now they are back at it with this Liquid metal design they got going on. I really hope they sell enough and don't go bankrupt. People need educating about phones and need to realise there are more brands other than Samsung and Apple.

Come on Mr. Fisher this is the first time that I have to totally disagree with you. Over the past years you and everyone else has bashed HTC cause of their high prices, no IP ratings, bad cameras, no fingerprint scanners and low volume on speakers (HTC 10). This time and since the HTC 10 they have delivered solid performance phones and this U11 has everything people asked, even the dammed glass back, but everyone still hates on them. For the first time they price their true flagship really well below the competition and now you complain is not expensive enough????? Squeeze feature is not a gimmick in my eyes and I think it will be very useful for us here in New England (I'm also from Boston now in Shrewsbury) during winter time. You're the only person so far that says the camera is average, I know that's your opinion, but man. I think it is wise for them not to use that weird apsect ratio for now since most of the apps and content doesn't support it and I'm sure that next year they will jump on that wagon as well, for now I applaud them for not going that way. He didn't complain because it is not expansive enough, but rather he thinks people who willing to pay that much money will want bit more advanced ones despite the bit higher price. And those who care about reasonable price more will have very strong competitor like One Plus 3t. It is a good phone but the competition is even better. I personally don't think anyone except HTC's loyal fans would buy this over bezeless screen of S8 or wait for OnePlus 5. And about the squeeze feature, I haven't used it myself but the side of the phone is made up of metal and why would you squeeze your hand with metal... it will just hurt your hand.
It is pretty sad to see such a famous channel releasing a poor and review full of discrimination. Even comparing to the flagships of different brands, the HTC U11 still stands out at multiple aspects including the camera ability, microphone quality with acoustic focus function, edge squeeze for underwater photography, nice battery life under relatively small battery and most importantly, the fluent interface. With all these wonderful merits, this channel just mentioned the pros at the speed of light, and left most of the time criticizing under harsh and uncomfortable tone. Really feel sad and sorry for another once famous channel currently losing its credit.
Over half of the video was pros, then a few minutes of cons, then more pros and then conclusion. That's a standard mrmobile video. And all the cons are true. It's you wearing rose tinted glasses when looking at HTC
HTC just makes solid phones , man. Im using an A9 and no it's not amazing but I can't say I've ever been like "I NEED a new phone," I don't use a case, and it drops a couple frames but never lags and never closes apps whilst multitasking. Just simple, physically elegant, and solid. I feel like that's what HTC is about. I'm over the whole rooting and custom roms phase and HTC phones never make me browse XDA. I'm almost annoyed about how good it is because I bought it for 150 to hold me over for a couple months until the S8 came out but now it's been a year and I'm thinking I might go one more with this thing.
I still have my A9 as well. It is an underrated phone and it's just popular to bash HTC these days because of a few experimental hiccups. If people weren't so blind to fanboyism, they would see the quality the HTC truly brings.
Dmitriy HTC phones offer a solid build and great performance for a long time. I just recently bought a Sprint HTC Bolt for $100 (used) and this thing is just amazing !

yeah I have the 10 myself, I was considering the A9 at first when I saw the damn thing. gotta say, it's beautiful. I always keep thinking of buying one and keeping it around.
He's talking about the One A9, Daniel. HTC was somewhat nuts to price what's essentially a midranger at $500. The U11's $650 MSRP or $600 with the code is much more palatable. I think both the S8 and U11 are nice phones, to be honest. Depending on your needs and preferences, you're bound to find something you like in either one of the two. The S8 is my personal favorite, but that U11 is mighty spiffy, even though some stuff does annoy me a little. People who ordered one likely aren't going to be disappointed. It's a great phone.
Sincerely, it deserves more praise than people give it. Its better than S8 in my opinion. Most companies don't even focus on the audio features, HTC is the only one which has struck to its guns when it comes to providing great audio experience. I think U11 will be the phone on which you will make a video about next year saying how amazing it was just like most reviewers did for HTC 10. And seriously!! criticizing it for the change in name, for adding a U. Don't get me wrong man, I love your reviews but this time I disagree on few points. The only turn off for me was the small battery and the lack of 3.5 mm jack.
I have to be honest, HTC hasn't been great for the past several years, but this phone actually looks good. The camera is good, the sound is good, it's waterproof/resistant, the battery seems decent for a full day and I personally don't mind the 16:9 and the capacitive buttons. It's a pretty solid phone.
These reviewers all take great pleasure in knocking HTC yet all they dislike is quite unreasonable, they knock the HTC for the gimmicky squeeze, yet I see the potential in this and then they praise the s8 for being advanced, yet the s8 is full of gimmicky pointless useless stuff from DeX to Bixby to pulse sensor to Edge screen! I really do not understand these reviews and feel that reviewers have ulterior motives which makes me sad. Many of us want a great performing phone that does the main things well and the HTC does this in spades. The front fingerprint sensor is essential, great speakers, a must, great audio compared to the average s8. Watch speedtests and the s8 is slow, and the U11 is the first time I have seen it wack the Samsung in those tests. The aspect ratio of the screen, why these skinny length phones, I much prefer the wider U11. The noise canceling headphones are great, the directional mic is useful, where are the useful s8 features? A poor review that jumps on the "I love Samsung and everything else is not good" band wagon, that has become very boring and I feel these UA-cam reviewers are now at the whim of certain viewers, the teen market, and their reviews are to maximize clicks; praise the s8 and knock the rest. I expected more from mR Mobile😔
I had less problems with my M7 in the two years I had it than my LG G4 in 1 month. The M7 was that good. It even had better audio for music. Only pro from switching to the G4 was the bigger screen.
in the world where $$ talks, how can we ever expect a fair review against HTC? Undoubtedly, I am a fan of HTC, but I've been disappointed by their lousy design since M9 (my last HTC phone was M8 before U11)...but since 10 i've witnessed some noticeable improvements, and now U11, i can proudly say hTC finally hears the voice of their long-disappointed customers...i won't call it the best phone of the year, but it sure comes with highest spec in the current market, best front camera experience and most reasonable price...a flagship phone with this price, i can't ask for more...so i just bought it on the day when it was announced and am now enjoying it very much...
He seems to be critical about U 11 and people seems to be critical about this review. After reading the comments on different U 11 review videos it seems HTC has finally done something right, as I have never seen this many people in favour of HTC in long time.
I'm more conflicted about this review, picking up on stuff that such as edge sense and HTC Campanion as faults is rather stupid because you can simply not use either if you don't want to, simple as that. So basically there is nothing to be conflicted about in this phone, it is shapping to be the best phone of 2017 aside from aestetics (the front) everything else is top notch

Yet another underrated HTC phone Michael I agree with most of your points but I'm immediately switching to it from my LG G6 gimmicks or not they've got solid requested features locked down such as water resistance, improved boomsound speakers that still beat most flagships today and a camera that is up to par with the top end devices if not better and I have hope for the squeeze features to be developed enough to a point of usefulness. but hey once again a great detailed review.

Another Michael Fisher review, and as usual I put all else aside! However, this is the first time I've felt an MM review was a bit jaded and contrary. An invisible option to activate just about any feature or app is a gimmick, but an intrusive button to activate ONLY a half baked solo feature is not? Battery life on the U11 is solidly better than the S8, yet the S8 battery life is fine? And how was the Pixel given a pass with an ugly front, AND an ugly back? And reference to the best performance outside of the Pixel needs to go away, as it's been documented that the U11 is the first phone that is even faster than the Pixel. It's also faster than the Galaxy S8 and iPhone 7. I'll leave the LG G6 out of the equation for obvious reasons. The biggest sin I see with the HTC U11 is that it's screen is normal. For those that do a lot of media consumption, not having a weird aspect ratio is a good thing. You may not know it, but the front viewing area on the U11 display is the same is the Galaxy S8. And when you watch a movie, the S8 viewing area is less. That is, unless you change the S8 to the mode where it chops off the top and bottom of the movie to get rid of the black bars on the sides... but then it's like watching a movie through a mail slot. You can't beat watching a full screen movie on a full screen that actually fits. Especially when you can hear it as well ;) Just touching on audio; I too prefer a real headphone jack. Factor in that I'm a professional studio engineer with music hits in the national top ten, and a jack becomes more important. However, that leaves me in a quandary, as the S8 audio is inferior no matter how you plug in. Everyday users might not notice as much. But, for someone who's been trained by Motown legends to listen for details, I would rather use an adapter with a built-in DAC than a built-in jack with lesser quality. That being said, Michael, I still adore your videos and I'll never have hair as cool as you, and I'm ok with that.
I think the issue here is due to Michael's statement at 7:40 " I expect most people will...". Michael did praise the U11 as a good phone, many times in the video, but this statement implies that the U11 is not a good buy. Personally, I think it's a bit harsh on the U11. This is the 1st time in many years that I can see a HTC flagship that can go head to head with big competitors' offerings without real compromises.
I feel like this reviews conclusion doesn't make much sense. The phone has everything people have been asking for from HTC and its in most cases more practical than the S8. I don't see how a couple software gimmicks that can be turned off anyways could overshadow everything else that's excellent on this phone. I like your reviews a lot, but I think this one really fell flat.
Robert Hardy no idea how edge sense can be called a gimmick. Samsung gave people a button that opens an assistant and nothing else. edge sense is programmable and will have so many use cases. apps could also utilise the feature and will prove to be very useful for zooming in and out of maps for example. it's a brilliant innovation.

How can you say the S8+ is more advanced? In what, screen tecnology? It seems the HTC u11 packs a more powerfull hardware and the modified SO is also better with HTC and i bet will age better too.

insainllama my whole family have had galaxy ranges from 5-8. All have had problems to lag and freezing. They had had constant broken screens . purple line through screens. battery charge problems , sim card problems. I'm talking 6 or 7 phones here. not one of them listen to me to buy a HTC . I've never had to return my phone. They have multiple times. Samsung are not what they are made out to be. whilst HTC is under appreciated
I feel ya. Im currently using an HTC Desire 530 while my iPhone screen gets repaired. While this thing is pretty slow, I don't hate it. While I would still rather use my iPhone, its interesting to see that even an HTC low end device can be pretty decent and much more enjoyable than other low end devices. Heck I even like this thing better than my old Nextbit Robin.

I think this is your hardest review on an HTC yet. You usually really like their stuff. It's also one of the hardest reviews on the U11 yet. Everyone else seems to think the camera is "at least as good" as the S8 while yours is "almost as good." Can't wait to try myself. I totally agree with the Sense companion and I can't believe they are still trying to put Blinkfeed into their phones which is awful. I do think this phone is the best buy out currently (barring a stunning camera and solid software on the upcoming Oneplus 5), though. I hope it gets the love it's due from the public, but online only generally only results in sales to geeks...so I think you may be right on the sales...S8 for most, geeks will shop for cheap phones like the new Motos or the Oneplus.
I don't really see how you can call s8 more advanced than this phone. In what aspect s8 is more advanced than this phone except screen? Also you seem to miss the point of squeezing. It's a new tech that needs app support to develop. Hardware is there, app developers just need to use it for effective shortcuts etc. Skipping songs in spotify for example, so you can squeeze the phone in your pocket to skip to next song etc.
Mr Mobile, I disagree with the overall theme of your review. You're one of the most objective reviewers out there but you've just lost the plot here! Squeezing is natural and intuitive and with future software updates, it's only going to get better. Battery life has been great on my unit and maybe past experience is clouding your judgement here since the camera on this one is an absolute stunner! Maybe you need to give it another chance and re do this review?

Please be aware that it is called ACTIVE noise cancelling, NOT acoustic. Acoustic is what Bose uses for their headphone as branding. You have done that in multiple videos :) orherwise i love your videos :)
Will have mine a year as of June 14th. Overall very happy with it. First time I ever bought a phone unlocked. Very good camera, good screen and speakers. Definitely keeping it another year. Enjoy watching your videos.
People just want that fancy logo of apple and samsung on their phones to show off, nothing fancy they all are gimiks. Iphone uses the same software years, iphone first copied the metal body from HTC and the even the 3D touch was coppied, and you talk about S8 the most gimiky phone of the year. The U11 is toe-to-toe with the S8 in all of the important categories except just one, which is audio. In that regard, the U11 pulls far ahead. In my opinion, that clearly puts the U11 ahead overall, not to mention the S8's atrocious RAM management. Yet reviewers like Mr. Mobile have nothing but tepid praise for the U11, while the S8 is treated like the second coming. Very strange and unfortunate double standard.
The general consensus in nearly all U11 UA-cam videos comment sections is that the U11 is the greatest phone ever created, and the S8 is "dah laggiezt piece of crap eva made, fuck Samsung". Thank you for delivering a balanced and objective review, as always.

most unbiased review ive seen so far. i'm absolutely going to buy this phone but i feel some reviewers are over exagerated with how incresible this phone is while others are just deliverately trying to bash the phone in favor of the galaxy s8
i think sticking with 5.5", 16:9 aspect ratio is fine but they should made efforts to make the bezels smaller by moving the finger print sensor and swithing to on sceen buttons
The squeeze seems like an awesome camera shortcut! It's instant instead of having to hold down a tiny camera button (you know those times when you want your camera ready NOW) and overall it just seems like a rare innovation in an ultra conservative "me too" smartphone space. The audio features are underplayed as well. Tuning the phone body to boost resonance for phone audio, 3d audio recording by default, 4 mics, audio focus, and the hardware integration with the included earbuds (some of which was glossed over in this video) are all interesting and useful features! I also love that they actually took the effort to bring a unique design language from concept to execution like Sony does instead of just jumping on the forgettable design trends of the year. And the camera. From what I can see it's the best phone camera on the market aside from the XZ Premium. The iPhone doesn't have accurate colors while the S8 has oversaturation and oversharpening of images. Now, as a Sony owner I have some harsh words for Sony's image processing (low light and indoors has some serious problems that flowers and review pictures don't always capture) and overall I come away going that the U11 has the best camera in the market, tied with the Pixel. For some reason I think this is a phone that I could really love to own, and that over time it could be greater than the sum of its parts. I wish it had a glance screen feature and wireless charging, but regardless this is the phone I want to own, and I don't think I'm making a compromise in saying so.

Hey Michael...I think this is the first time I totally disagree with you about a review I think you're wrong on this one...this phones got something for everyone ...music lovers got great audio ...camera lovers it's got a great camera ...people who like fast software experience close to almost close to stock .. much cheaper than a pixel...Built quality great with the stunning new look... and unique way to launch your camera... tops specs for those that care about whether it's an 835 with 64gb ....The only thing is Phone doesn't have is that new screen ratio ...and the best part is it's cheaper then the other leading flagships of 2017 so I don't see how this isn't a win-win for anybody that wants a new phone
beside fancy screen, S8 has noting more advanced than U11. U11 has better camera, much, so much better software, better audio....ther isn't anything that S8 makes more advanced phone (S7 Edge is better than S8). Good review exept this "more advanced thing"

HTC is a true flagship. Only thing it is lagging behind is the front face design. Otherwise nothing comes close. Flagship performance(better than Samsung and LG), that audio system literally obliterates any other smartphone, LCD 5 screen which is not too far behind Amoleds and a camera which is actually better than most of the cameras out there. ( At par with s8 and Pixel). I see no reason how is that edge sense a gimmick. Squeezing doesn't need you to adjust you grip while a button does. S8 is all screen and show off, and Bixby? Seriously? Isn't that a gimmick? What about LG's flagship price with outdated processor. I think U11 is the best flagship of this year for now until Pixel 2 and iPhone comes out.
Really surprised by the negative review, especially about the camera and battery life. Which version of the U11 was used in this review? The Sprint version or unlocked? Another reviewer mentioned that the Sprint version didn't get the latest camera updates yet. Maybe the Sprint software is affecting battery life too?

seems like from the beginning her was against the phone. Bixby And the fingerprint scanner on the S8 is horrible. U11 has a really good finger print scanner, good screen, great speakers, Great camera, and to of the line specs! But it is just OK. Sometimes I wonder how they judge phones. Always seems to love the Samsung though..

Until they save enough over the years to start working on good advertising, they're gonna be underrated This is for sure the way to go though, they're on the right path when it comes to the phone itself
The thing I can categorically say without reservation is that this year has given us some fantastic android phones with a few more still to come. There's a great android phone for everyone out there. It's over to Oneplus and Google now to show us what they are made of. I've always had a massive soft spot for HTC but was losing interest. I think HTC have shown a lot of guts bringing this phone to the table. It's not for everyone but I'd like to take my hat off to the HTC engineers and say well done guys.
Why would anyone want the s8 over the u11? The screen? That only? I can have a better audio experience, smooth UI, better looking phone imo and a camera with no oversaturation that makes you feel that it's coming from a 50s pin up photo shoot. The U11 ticks all the boxes for me, and I wonder why did you say that the s8 is more "advanced"? I have a hard time believing that the taller screen is the only reason.

They bought an audio company for 7 billions and still, their audio is crap. HTC was the first to make an android phone and still craft brilliant phones. S8 is a beautifully made smartphone, but the u11 is more superior in every aspect other than the screen.

Monzer Assar People like different things. In your eyes, the U 11 is better than the s8. That's cool man. It's true that the u11 has a lot of nice features that the s8 hasn't but same thing goes the other way around. Personally I don't give a shit about fancy DAC or boom stereo speakers because i rarely use a speaker, and the htc software IN MY OPINION is worse than samsungs at this point beacuse they took what makes stock android dull and strapped some fake assistants on it. And then all the sheep say : "oh but it's smooth", which slowly is becoming irrelevant as i never experienced hiccups on my S7 edge and have had it since launch. But that's just an opinion and no phone is objectively the best on the market. It's about what's best for YOU. If a company does a better phone that caters to my needs then i'll buy it. I don't care about brands or manufactures.
The problem isn't that the S8 is "more advanced" than the U11, the problem is that the S8 is more popular than the U11. People will buy a phone because it's trendy and never think twice what they're actually getting for their money.... so sorry the U11 is better in this regard, even though I'd never buy either the S8 or the U11.
First time ever being disappointed with a review from you. I'm not a brand loyalist and will get whatever is better. The only thing reviewers mention about phones in 2017 is the infinite display. Htc U11 is the best overall phone, just like the HTC 10 when it came out. Everything is way above average or the best. You cant say the same for Samsung, LG etc.. Samsung has the best display but the lag is ridiculous and the speakers is straight garbage..

a little harsh Michael. I think so anyway. sure the s8s design makes this look dated and I'm not trying to subtract from how important that is especially from a retail perspective, but overall it's a good phone and priced reasonably. dx0 scores to one side the camera is good enough to satisfy most. as you say the software is fluid and it's got great audio options. It probably would have served HTC better to have priced it at least $150 less than the s8 seeing as it loses to that device on the disign display and camera fronts which are the key areas for consideration when most compare. having said that in 2018 they all need to step up on design. no matter how good the spec sheet is, how well it performs, how great it sounds or how premium it feels, if it looks 10yrs older than it's competition, it's sure to get overlooked by many.
good video as always mr. fisher! before watching this video, i was a bit skeptical about the u11 but now i'm feeling impressed about the phone. judging from your experience, i think this phone's only weakness is the battery life and the absence of headphone jack. i'm not sure why your overall tone sounds a bit disappointed with the phone, but each to its own opinion ;) keep up the good work
I am still so iffy about glass back phones, and losing the headphone jack but I'm falling for the U11. I think it won the battle for me, between the S8+ the LG G6 and whatever OnePlus may be up to, but that's to be decided.
David hunsinger U11 will probably be the best or the Pixel 2 mostly because the software won't slow down like LG G6 or the S8 unless they fixed it which I doubt.

There are honestly only four reasons why people buy the phones they have; brand loyalty, showing off, budget and how the phone looks. To me the HTC ticks all of them except the budget of course, I will choose this phone over the S8

Dear Mr Mobile, this review is more contradictory than the phone. The s8 has a better display (if you get one without red tint) and looks prettier. However, the U11 camera is just as good, similar battery, much better audio, both through the headphones and loudspeaker, much faster software not to mention quicker updates. Its pretty much what the Pixel should've been. You seems to be bashing the phone for no apparent reason.

Samsung S8 more advanced ??? I don't think so.... A gimmicky rounded over saturated screen with distorted image at the edges is hardly an advancement. Meanwhile U11 after checking out all the reviews , best camera, best sound, by far the quickest phone on the market, most accurate screen colour,( no over saturated cartoon looking image) beautiful design..etc, all for the very best price for a flagship phone, what more could you want?
Not sure how the S8 is more advanced than the HTC U11. The only thing the S8 has going for it the curved Amoled display which if your lucky will not have a pinkish tint to it and which is susceptible to screen burn ins. The edge sense may not be for everyone but at least it is much more useful than the separate Bixby button which cannot be remaped for anything else but to launch Bixby. The edge sense gives you the option to customize it. I am a bit disappointed at the lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack but knowing HTCs past phones and their dedication to provide high quality audio output, I'm sure I won't be let down.

what ever they did with their products the industry as a whole followed it
1.all metal design on M7 when competition was on plastic (notification light inside micro drilled speaker grill was dope) hope someone remembers it
2. stereo sound (boomsound) which became industry standard later
3.duo camera on m8 one as shooter and other for recoding depth of field for bokeh effect was a great idea and the industry is catching up now only the software then lead to it's downfall
4. 3d camera shooter on evo 3d was way ahead of the time
5. fingerprint sensor on HTC one max even before iPhone 5s
6. how can one forget the first Android phone ,first Windows phone , first 4g phone
and many small things things such as clicking picture while recording video simultaneously, lock screen widget, blinkfeed, ois in front camera, now the 3d audio namely were somewhat industry first
they really nailed the core of the user experience that too without bloatware and the phones were gimmick proof which is complimented by their industrial design
the only thing which lead to the downfall of the company is their management and their marketing they were the first but never capitalized on it
if they had got their management right during the m8 period we might have seen more ground breaking innovations from the company rather than just edge sense

Yep. Just like TV's too all Samsung does is copy other people. Sony and HTC have been so innovative with all their new features. They get ridiculed for it. Then a year later big companies like Samsung and Apple will steal it. Then advertise the hell out of it and make it seem like it's amazing. Pay off big reviewers and there's your sales. Companies like Apple and Samsung spend most of their money on marketing, unlike the real tech companies who spend it on R&D. They either flat out steal it or fine-tune the features and software a bit more then mass market it as the greatest thing ever. Will never buy or support corrupt companies like LG, Samsung, Apple etc.

Samsung
1) They first brought Amoled screens to smartphones and now it is mainstream
2) They brought multitasking to android first via touchwiz dual window before Google took it with nougat.
3) Galaxy SII was one of the first if not the very first Android smartphone with dual core processor.
4) Samsung is the only android smartphone manufacturer with their own processor division (Exynos). Neither HTC has one nor Sony or LG.
Apple
1) Their software support obliterates any Android competitor
2) Their A series processors are often faster than any Snapdragon, Exynos or Mediatek
3) iPad outright destroys all Android tablet competitors whether in raw processing power or App support.
4) Video recording in iPhones is still superior to android phones

*Dashing*Graham Cluck Those of us who follow HTC, pretty much knew that a replacement for the 10 would come in the Spring, despite the U Ultra release early in the year, especially since HTC always uses the latest processor in their flagships. U Ultra is a good phone that was wrongfully bashed. My biggest beef with it is it doesn't work on Verizon. U11 pretty much ticks all the boxes and works on all carriers.

Everyone loves the pixel because of its incredible software, smooth performance, and camera. Here come the u11 with just as good a camera, same great performance, incredible audio that blows away the pixel, and capacitive buttons that allow more screen to be used, oh, and some themes, and people wanna shit on it. Plus it is significantly cheaper than the pixel. Okay 👌 I'll be loving the u11 while everyone else is getting sick of their laggy ass s8 and soon to be boot looping g6. Hell, the competition isn't even running 7.1!

Ahhh good old HTC, Probably the best phone producer with the most underrated phones of all time. I almost never see anyone with an HTC device yet they produce some of the best out there. I remember how revolutionary the HTC M7 was back in the game with the all metal unibody design and now they are back at it with this Liquid metal design they got going on. I really hope they sell enough and don't go bankrupt. People need educating about phones and need to realise there are more brands other than Samsung and Apple.

Come on Mr. Fisher this is the first time that I have to totally disagree with you. Over the past years you and everyone else has bashed HTC cause of their high prices, no IP ratings, bad cameras, no fingerprint scanners and low volume on speakers (HTC 10). This time and since the HTC 10 they have delivered solid performance phones and this U11 has everything people asked, even the dammed glass back, but everyone still hates on them. For the first time they price their true flagship really well below the competition and now you complain is not expensive enough????? Squeeze feature is not a gimmick in my eyes and I think it will be very useful for us here in New England (I'm also from Boston now in Shrewsbury) during winter time. You're the only person so far that says the camera is average, I know that's your opinion, but man. I think it is wise for them not to use that weird apsect ratio for now since most of the apps and content doesn't support it and I'm sure that next year they will jump on that wagon as well, for now I applaud them for not going that way. Yes I hate the fact it doesn't have the 3.5 jack, I hate is not cold metal but thats it, it is a solid well built fast phone that will get faster updates than any Samsung and won't lag as those. It is pretty sad to see such a famous channel releasing a poor and review full of discrimination. Even comparing to the flagships of different brands, the HTC U11 still stands out at multiple aspects including the camera ability, microphone quality with acoustic focus function, edge squeeze for underwater photography, nice battery life under relatively small battery and most importantly, the fluent interface. With all these wonderful merits, this channel just mentioned the pros at the speed of light, and left most of the time criticizing under harsh and uncomfortable tone.
Really feel sad and sorry for another once famous channel currently losing its credit.

HTC just makes solid phones , man. Im using an A9 and no it's not amazing but I can't say I've ever been like "I NEED a new phone," I don't use a case, and it drops a couple frames but never lags and never closes apps whilst multitasking. Just simple, physically elegant, and solid. I feel like that's what HTC is about. I'm over the whole rooting and custom roms phase and HTC phones never make me browse XDA.
I'm almost annoyed about how good it is because I bought it for 150 to hold me over for a couple months until the S8 came out but now it's been a year and I'm thinking I might go one more with this thing.
I still have my A9 as well. It is an underrated phone and it's just popular to bash HTC these days because of a few experimental hiccups. If people weren't so blind to fanboyism, they would see the quality the HTC truly brings.

I think both the S8 and U11 are nice phones, to be honest. Depending on your needs and preferences, you're bound to find something you like in either one of the two.
The S8 is my personal favorite, but that U11 is mighty spiffy, even though some stuff does annoy me a little. People who ordered one likely aren't going to be disappointed. It's a great phone.
Sincerely, it deserves more praise than people give it. Its better than S8 in my opinion. Most companies don't even focus on the audio features, HTC is the only one which has struck to its guns when it comes to providing great audio experience. I think U11 will be the phone on which you will make a video about next year saying how amazing it was just like most reviewers did for HTC 10. And seriously!! criticizing it for the change in name, for adding a U. Don't get me wrong man, I love your reviews but this time I disagree on few points. The only turn off for me was the small battery and the lack of 3.5 mm jack.
I have to be honest, HTC hasn't been great for the past several years, but this phone actually looks good. The camera is good, the sound is good, it's waterproof/resistant, the battery seems decent for a full day and I personally don't mind the 16:9 and the capacitive buttons. It's a pretty solid phone.
These reviewers all take great pleasure in knocking HTC yet all they dislike is quite unreasonable, they knock the HTC for the gimmicky squeeze, yet I see the potential in this and then they praise the s8 for being advanced, yet the s8 is full of gimmicky pointless useless stuff from DeX to Bixby to pulse sensor to Edge screen! I really do not understand these reviews and feel that reviewers have ulterior motives which makes me sad. Many of us want a great performing phone that does the main things well and the HTC does this in spades. The front fingerprint sensor is essential, great speakers, a must, great audio compared to the average s8. Watch speedtests and the s8 is slow, and the U11 is the first time I have seen it wack the Samsung in those tests. The aspect ratio of the screen, why these skinny length phones, I much prefer the wider U11. The noise canceling headphones are great, the directional mic is useful, where are the useful s8 features? A poor review that jumps on the "I love Samsung and everything else is not good" band wagon, that has become very boring and I feel these UA-cam reviewers are now at the whim of certain viewers, the teen market, and their reviews are to maximize clicks; praise the s8 and knock the rest. I expected more from mR Mobile😔
I had less problems with my M7 in the two years I had it than my LG G4 in 1 month. The M7 was that good. It even had better audio for music. Only pro from switching to the G4 was the bigger screen.

Undoubtedly, I am a fan of HTC, but I've been disappointed by their lousy design since M9 (my last HTC phone was M8 before U11)...but since 10 i've witnessed some noticeable improvements, and now U11, i can proudly say hTC finally hears the voice of their long-disappointed customers...i won't call it the best phone of the year, but it sure comes with highest spec in the current market, best front camera experience and most reasonable price...a flagship phone with this price, i can't ask for more...so i just bought it on the day when it was announced and am now enjoying it very much...
He seems to be critical about U 11 and people seems to be critical about this review. After reading the comments on different U 11 review videos it seems HTC has finally done something right, as I have never seen this many people in favour of HTC in long time.

I'm more conflicted about this review, picking up on stuff that such as edge sense and HTC Campanion as faults is rather stupid because you can simply not use either if you don't want to, simple as that. So basically there is nothing to be conflicted about in this phone, it is shapping to be the best phone of 2017 aside from aestetics (the front) everything else is top notch

Yet another underrated HTC phone Michael I agree with most of your points but I'm immediately switching to it from my LG G6 gimmicks or not they've got solid requested features locked down such as water resistance, improved boomsound speakers that still beat most flagships today and a camera that is up to par with the top end devices if not better and I have hope for the squeeze features to be developed enough to a point of usefulness. but hey once again a great detailed review.

MrMobile [Michael Fisher] I know I sure will :( but the camera improvements alone make it superior compared to the G6 oh and the audio capabilities related to it are dope and I'm really glad you said boomsound is back! man do I miss the days of having a great sounding device it gives me great comfort knowing they're one of the only companies still pushing their sound capabilities compared to flagships adopting single speakers :/ This phone has really grown on me after some deep thought lol.
Another Michael Fisher review, and as usual I put all else aside!
However, this is the first time I've felt an MM review was a bit jaded and contrary.
An invisible option to activate just about any feature or app is a gimmick, but an intrusive button to activate ONLY a half baked solo feature is not? Battery life on the U11 is solidly better than the S8, yet the S8 battery life is fine? And how was the Pixel given a pass with an ugly front, AND an ugly back? And reference to the best performance outside of the Pixel needs to go away, as it's been documented that the U11 is the first phone that is even faster than the Pixel. It's also faster than the Galaxy S8 and iPhone 7. I'll leave the LG G6 out of the equation for obvious reasons.
The biggest sin I see with the HTC U11 is that it's screen is normal. For those that do a lot of media consumption, not having a weird aspect ratio is a good thing. You may not know it, but the front viewing area on the U11 display is the same is the Galaxy S8. And when you watch a movie, the S8 viewing area is less. That is, unless you change the S8 to the mode where it chops off the top and bottom of the movie to get rid of the black bars on the sides... but then it's like watching a movie through a mail slot. You can't beat watching a full screen movie on a full screen that actually fits. Especially when you can hear it as well ;)
Just touching on audio; I too prefer a real headphone jack. Factor in that I'm a professional studio engineer with music hits in the national top ten, and a jack becomes more important. However, that leaves me in a quandary, as the S8 audio is inferior no matter how you plug in. Everyday users might not notice as much. But, for someone who's been trained by Motown legends to listen for details, I would rather use an adapter with a built-in DAC than a built-in jack with lesser quality.
That being said, Michael, I still adore your videos and I'll never have hair as cool as you, and I'm ok with that.
I think the issue here is due to Michael's statement at 7:40 " I expect most people will...". Michael did praise the U11 as a good phone, many times in the video, but this statement implies that the U11 is not a good buy. Personally, I think it's a bit harsh on the U11. This is the 1st time in many years that I can see a HTC flagship that can go head to head with big competitors' offerings without real compromises.
I feel like this reviews conclusion doesn't make much sense. The phone has everything people have been asking for from HTC and its in most cases more practical than the S8. I don't see how a couple software gimmicks that can be turned off anyways could overshadow everything else that's excellent on this phone. I like your reviews a lot, but I think this one really fell flat.
Robert Hardy no idea how edge sense can be called a gimmick. Samsung gave people a button that opens an assistant and nothing else. edge sense is programmable and will have so many use cases. apps could also utilise the feature and will prove to be very useful for zooming in and out of maps for example. it's a brilliant innovation.

From what I saw in camera comparisons htc was superior.
How can you say the S8+ is more advanced? In what, screen tecnology? It seems the HTC u11 packs a more powerfull hardware and the modified SO is also better with HTC and i bet will age better too.

Idk why Samsung doesn't just use exynos for all of their flagships. My s7 with the snapdragon chip was a laggy slug after six months.
insainllama my whole family have had galaxy ranges from 5-8. All have had problems to lag and freezing. They had had constant broken screens . purple line through screens. battery charge problems , sim card problems. I'm talking 6 or 7 phones here. not one of them listen to me to buy a HTC . I've never had to return my phone. They have multiple times. Samsung are not what they are made out to be. whilst HTC is under appreciated

I feel ya. Im currently using an HTC Desire 530 while my iPhone screen gets repaired. While this thing is pretty slow, I don't hate it. While I would still rather use my iPhone, its interesting to see that even an HTC low end device can be pretty decent and much more enjoyable than other low end devices. Heck I even like this thing better than my old Nextbit Robin.

I think this is your hardest review on an HTC yet. You usually really like their stuff. It's also one of the hardest reviews on the U11 yet. Everyone else seems to think the camera is "at least as good" as the S8 while yours is "almost as good." Can't wait to try myself. I totally agree with the Sense companion and I can't believe they are still trying to put Blinkfeed into their phones which is awful. I do think this phone is the best buy out currently (barring a stunning camera and solid software on the upcoming Oneplus 5), though. I hope it gets the love it's due from the public, but online only generally only results in sales to geeks...so I think you may be right on the sales...S8 for most, geeks will shop for cheap phones like the new Motos or the Oneplus.
I don't really see how you can call s8 more advanced than this phone. In what aspect s8 is more advanced than this phone except screen? Also you seem to miss the point of squeezing. It's a new tech that needs app support to develop. Hardware is there, app developers just need to use it for effective shortcuts etc. Skipping songs in spotify for example, so you can squeeze the phone in your pocket to skip to next song etc.
Mr Mobile, I disagree with the overall theme of your review. You're one of the most objective reviewers out there but you've just lost the plot here! Squeezing is natural and intuitive and with future software updates, it's only going to get better. Battery life has been great on my unit and maybe past experience is clouding your judgement here since the camera on this one is an absolute stunner! Maybe you need to give it another chance and re do this review?

Please be aware that it is called ACTIVE noise cancelling, NOT acoustic. Acoustic is what Bose uses for their headphone as branding. You have done that in multiple videos :) orherwise i love your videos :)
Will have mine a year as of June 14th. Overall very happy with it. First time I ever bought a phone unlocked. Very good camera, good screen and speakers. Definitely keeping it another year. Enjoy watching your videos.

Iphone uses the same software years, iphone first copied the metal body from HTC and the even the 3D touch was coppied, and you talk about S8 the most gimiky phone of the year. Thought of you as a good sensible unbiased reviewer until this video. Did you just said that HTC U11 is not pricey enough? Is that a con? Wow, that beats me.
The U11 is toe-to-toe with the S8 in all of the important categories except just one, which is audio. In that regard, the U11 pulls far ahead. In my opinion, that clearly puts the U11 ahead overall, not to mention the S8's atrocious RAM management. Yet reviewers like Mr. Mobile have nothing but tepid praise for the U11, while the S8 is treated like the second coming. Very strange and unfortunate double standard.
The general consensus in nearly all U11 UA-cam videos comment sections is that the U11 is the greatest phone ever created, and the S8 is "dah laggiezt piece of crap eva made, fuck Samsung". Thank you for delivering a balanced and objective review, as always.

most unbiased review ive seen so far. i'm absolutely going to buy this phone but i feel some reviewers are over exagerated with how incresible this phone is while others are just deliverately trying to bash the phone in favor of the galaxy s8
i think sticking with 5.5", 16:9 aspect ratio is fine but they should made efforts to make the bezels smaller by moving the finger print sensor and swithing to on sceen buttons

The squeeze seems like an awesome camera shortcut! It's instant instead of having to hold down a tiny camera button (you know those times when you want your camera ready NOW) and overall it just seems like a rare innovation in an ultra conservative "me too" smartphone space.
The audio features are underplayed as well. Tuning the phone body to boost resonance for phone audio, 3d audio recording by default, 4 mics, audio focus, and the hardware integration with the included earbuds (some of which was glossed over in this video) are all interesting and useful features!
I also love that they actually took the effort to bring a unique design language from concept to execution like Sony does instead of just jumping on the forgettable design trends of the year.
And the camera. From what I can see it's the best phone camera on the market aside from the XZ Premium. The iPhone doesn't have accurate colors while the S8 has oversaturation and oversharpening of images. Now, as a Sony owner I have some harsh words for Sony's image processing (low light and indoors has some serious problems that flowers and review pictures don't always capture) and overall I come away going that the U11 has the best camera in the market, tied with the Pixel.
For some reason I think this is a phone that I could really love to own, and that over time it could be greater than the sum of its parts. I wish it had a glance screen feature and wireless charging, but regardless this is the phone I want to own, and I don't think I'm making a compromise in saying so.

...music lovers got great audio ...camera lovers it's got a great camera ...people who like fast software experience close to almost close to stock .. much cheaper than a pixel...Built quality great with the stunning new look...
and unique way to launch your camera... tops specs for those that care about whether it's an 835 with 64gb ....The only thing is Phone doesn't have is that new screen ratio ...and the best part is it's cheaper then the other leading flagships of 2017 so I don't see how this isn't a win-win for anybody that wants a new phone

beside fancy screen, S8 has noting more advanced than U11. U11 has better camera, much, so much better software, better audio....ther isn't anything that S8 makes more advanced phone (S7 Edge is better than S8). Good review exept this "more advanced thing"

HTC is a true flagship. Only thing it is lagging behind is the front face design. Otherwise nothing comes close. Flagship performance(better than Samsung and LG), that audio system literally obliterates any other smartphone, LCD 5 screen which is not too far behind Amoleds and a camera which is actually better than most of the cameras out there. ( At par with s8 and Pixel). I see no reason how is that edge sense a gimmick. Squeezing doesn't need you to adjust you grip while a button does. S8 is all screen and show off, and Bixby? Seriously? Isn't that a gimmick? What about LG's flagship price with outdated processor. I think U11 is the best flagship of this year for now until Pixel 2 and iPhone comes out.
Really surprised by the negative review, especially about the camera and battery life. Which version of the U11 was used in this review? The Sprint version or unlocked? Another reviewer mentioned that the Sprint version didn't get the latest camera updates yet. Maybe the Sprint software is affecting battery life too?

seems like from the beginning her was against the phone. Bixby And the fingerprint scanner on the S8 is horrible. U11 has a really good finger print scanner, good screen, great speakers, Great camera, and to of the line specs! But it is just OK. Sometimes I wonder how they judge phones. Always seems to love the Samsung though..

The thing I can categorically say without reservation is that this year has given us some fantastic android phones with a few more still to come. There's a great android phone for everyone out there. It's over to Oneplus and Google now to show us what they are made of. I've always had a massive soft spot for HTC but was losing interest. I think HTC have shown a lot of guts bringing this phone to the table. It's not for everyone but I'd like to take my hat off to the HTC engineers and say well done guys.

HTC was the first to make an android phone and still craft brilliant phones. If it weren't for their bad marketing choices and lack of multi-carrier support, they would have had a bigger segment in the market.
S8 is a beautifully made smartphone, but the u11 is more superior in every aspect other than the screen.

And IMO the S8 has better camera than HTC cuz S8 camera isn't even that oversaturated and the exposure is awesome. Anyways, I respect your opinion

Monzer Assar People like different things. In your eyes, the U 11 is better than the s8. That's cool man. It's true that the u11 has a lot of nice features that the s8 hasn't but same thing goes the other way around. Personally I don't give a shit about fancy DAC or boom stereo speakers because i rarely use a speaker, and the htc software IN MY OPINION is worse than samsungs at this point beacuse they took what makes stock android dull and strapped some fake assistants on it. And then all the sheep say : "oh but it's smooth", which slowly is becoming irrelevant as i never experienced hiccups on my S7 edge and have had it since launch. But that's just an opinion and no phone is objectively the best on the market. It's about what's best for YOU. If a company does a better phone that caters to my needs then i'll buy it. I don't care about brands or manufactures.

The problem isn't that the S8 is "more advanced" than the U11, the problem is that the S8 is more popular than the U11. People will buy a phone because it's trendy and never think twice what they're actually getting for their money.... so sorry the U11 is better in this regard, even though I'd never buy either the S8 or the U11.
First time ever being disappointed with a review from you. I'm not a brand loyalist and will get whatever is better. The only thing reviewers mention about phones in 2017 is the infinite display. Htc U11 is the best overall phone, just like the HTC 10 when it came out. Everything is way above average or the best. You cant say the same for Samsung, LG etc.. Samsung has the best display but the lag is ridiculous and the speakers is straight garbage..

a little harsh Michael. I think so anyway. sure the s8s design makes this look dated and I'm not trying to subtract from how important that is especially from a retail perspective, but overall it's a good phone and priced reasonably. dx0 scores to one side the camera is good enough to satisfy most. as you say the software is fluid and it's got great audio options. It probably would have served HTC better to have priced it at least $150 less than the s8 seeing as it loses to that device on the disign display and camera fronts which are the key areas for consideration when most compare. having said that in 2018 they all need to step up on design. no matter how good the spec sheet is, how well it performs, how great it sounds or how premium it feels, if it looks 10yrs older than it's competition, it's sure to get overlooked by many.
good video as always mr. fisher! before watching this video, i was a bit skeptical about the u11 but now i'm feeling impressed about the phone. judging from your experience, i think this phone's only weakness is the battery life and the absence of headphone jack. i'm not sure why your overall tone sounds a bit disappointed with the phone, but each to its own opinion ;) keep up the good work
I am still so iffy about glass back phones, and losing the headphone jack but I'm falling for the U11. I think it won the battle for me, between the S8+ the LG G6 and whatever OnePlus may be up to, but that's to be decided.
David hunsinger U11 will probably be the best or the Pixel 2 mostly because the software won't slow down like LG G6 or the S8 unless they fixed it which I doubt.

a great sound and a very very good camera that beats s8 alot specially in low light and IP 67 a good price ....and s8 isnt an advanced phone if you think that a big screen that most of the apps open with black bars the top and the bottom no it isnt

Dear Mr Mobile, this review is more contradictory than the phone. The s8 has a better display (if you get one without red tint) and looks prettier. However, the U11 camera is just as good, similar battery, much better audio, both through the headphones and loudspeaker, much faster software not to mention quicker updates. Its pretty much what the Pixel should've been. You seems to be bashing the phone for no apparent reason.

Samsung S8 more advanced ??? I don't think so.... A gimmicky rounded over saturated screen with distorted image at the edges is hardly an advancement. Meanwhile U11 after checking out all the reviews , best camera, best sound, by far the quickest phone on the market, most accurate screen colour,( no over saturated cartoon looking image) beautiful design..etc, all for the very best price for a flagship phone, what more could you want?
Not sure how the S8 is more advanced than the HTC U11. The only thing the S8 has going for it the curved Amoled display which if your lucky will not have a pinkish tint to it and which is susceptible to screen burn ins. The edge sense may not be for everyone but at least it is much more useful than the separate Bixby button which cannot be remaped for anything else but to launch Bixby. The edge sense gives you the option to customize it. I am a bit disappointed at the lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack but knowing HTCs past phones and their dedication to provide high quality audio output, I'm sure I won't be let down.

I don't think the squeeze function is a gimmick. It could be a great solution to replace all physical buttons on smartphones.
