    The best phone I ever owned to this date was Htc one X. I remember owning a iPhone 4 and then moved to Htc one x. That phone was so ahead of its time. It was like watching terminator 2 in early 90s. It had sick camera (I took on my Canada trip and took awesome shots with it), beats audio, amazing build quality, smooth android. I love Htc phones. I will always root for Htc.

      FYI, it (HTC U Ultra) has two external speakers like iPhone 7.

    • @LRM12o8
      @LRM12o8 7 років тому +3

      If it's the same as on the htc 10, I can tell you they're ok for videos, but utter bullshit for music.
      They are tuned totally different (one high, the other for low tones), but they still act like stereo speakers. This can create some very unpleasant effects.

      Yeah I loved HTC for their impressive sound, but now I am not so sure... especially now they have ditched the headphone jack like apple with no good reasoning - Now I see no point in upgrading.

      @clashinwitcut1162 7 років тому +1

      lilmattere who care about head phone jacks! go wireless and your life will change forever! BTW the dual front facing speakers was the reason I switched to HTC in the first place.....pixel here I come!

      @C0D3A22A22IN 7 років тому

      Clash with Cut : The pixel could have been amazing with front facing speakers as well but what did they do instead? Leave a blank giant white space with no function at the bottem instead. Shame.

    • @Jhihmoac

      Clash with Cut - Pixel is also made by HTC to Google's specs... Say that last phrase lightly!

      Crazcompart I'll say it a strongly as I'd like! Yes it's made by HTC, I know this. HTC makes great products however, if I'm getting a phone I might at well get one with the best specs at this price point.

      htc just make phones that you can trust, not overpowered.
      they have less complaints about their products then the competition. wich in my opinion is justifying the price.
      i mean i still have a. HTC ONE wich work flawless. while all of my friends already replaced several phones like 2 iphone and samsungs in 2 years because they broke.

    I definitely preordered this. not only does this phone introduce some new features, but you get all the great features of HTC past. amazing design, Boomsound (not stereo speakers, but still better than most phones today), blinkfeed, certified high resolution audio, aptx, themes, dxomark 88 camera, uh oh protection, micro SD card support.
    No phone I can think of right now succeeds in all of these. Granted might change after MWC, but based on the leaks of Samsung and LG, I'm loving this design

    • @LRM12o8
      @LRM12o8 7 років тому +1

      apple and htc removing the headphone jack. That's so freaking weird!
      The two companies claiming to be the ones putting the most focus on audio quality suddenly think the included in-ears will suffice for people who care about Hi-Fi audio in their smartphone?!
      Good thing my htc 10 still got the jack, so i can natively connect my sweet Momentum over-ears to it.

    • @LRM12o8
      @LRM12o8 7 років тому +5

      By that logic they'd have to use the outdated micro USB as well.
      And what's the fucking benefit of a 0.1mm thinner phone anyway?
      This doesn't make ANY sense! It's Bullshit, mate.

    • @LRM12o8
      @LRM12o8 7 років тому +2

      The future where you have to charge everything, even your headphones every night and then have concerns about losing your connection or having lags several times a day, because it interferes with your smartwatch and someone's bluetooth mobile SDD? Awesome!
      makes absolutely no sense but hey, some dude said he hates cables and this was the future so damn, let's all do this!

  • @vizpurewal

    HTC was first to make unibody metallic smartphone with Antenna lines in the design (HTC One). They were first to use dual lens (HTC evo 3d) and now they're ripping off LG? WTH.

    • @Vscounter

      First Android. HTC is definitely NOT the first to make a smartphone. Know anything about old Windows Mobile or Symbian?

    • @Vscounter
      @Vscounter 7 років тому +3

      M7 was awesome. M8 was alright. M9 was a fail. The 10 was a good one, but already lost so much ground vs LG and Samsung alone in the US. Even at $549 with the Ultra, I will still say it's too high for the product.

    I don't get it. All they have to do is make a phone with same great aluminium unibody, boomsound speakers on the front, possibly quad DAC audio, maybe dual cameras on the back like LG v20 (Duo camera 2.0 that's actually decent?). I'm sure everyone would love it.
    HTC says they're taking a different approach but this is simply copying the finish from Samsung and copying the display from LG. Their most defining feature was the boomsound speakers and for some reason they got rid of the best HTC feature. Why HTC....

    • @boofcario
      @boofcario 7 років тому +2

      I could even do without the dual cameras, just include a 16-20MP camera that functions properly. The dumb part is they got rid of Boomsound AND took out the headphone port. Like what the heck was the reasoning behind the headphone port being ousted if to not improve audio?

    • @TheDesius

      Andrew Peck Nope its a copy of the Note 7 even the color is a copy... I mean why not since Samsung decided to retire it... its too bad cause HTC use to be a innovating company and now theyre just copying and following and catching up just like Apple... they use to have great sound and now they are just meh same as the competition... it's quite sad to see HTC fall so low

    The problem here is that this is coming out too late. This phone while as beautiful as it is, has last year specs. I've used a lot of phones in the last 8 years but I would say only three of them stands out. The first being the legendary and gorgeous HTC HD2 which made me explore the regions of custom roms and software and second being the first generation Samsung Galaxy S, i9000 I believe it was. The Galaxy made me continue the aspect of custom roms while delivering everything that I had expected from a phone back in the days. This was during the 2010 till 2012 and until 2014 I didn't found any phone which really stood up to my expectations. The third and final phone and also my previous go to device is the HTC One M8. I think M8 was by far the best out of the bunch as it worked for me in every aspect just the way I had wanted it to be. The design and material used was awesome, the display was big and nice, the software was fluid and the best was its audio capabilities from the speakers and also via headphone jack. I don't use camera much and the basic camera found on the M8 was interestingly enough for me to occasionally shoot photos and videos. That was the phone which I have used the longest in my life and I credit HTC of the past for making such an awesome device unlike the new HTC which recycles the decades old hardware and sell it for fortune. Right now I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S7 edge and although I'm quite happy with the device, I sometimes miss the audio output from the M8. I hope HTC could go back to the old days of creating awesome devices like the M8 and HD2 and their hero and desire hd phones.

    Design of the M7 (with the USB Port in the middle) + Speakers of the M9 + Hardware of the 10 + new SOC + updates for at least five years + all the cool modding stuff from the HD2 = Boom, here is your bestseller HTC! They just have to combine all the devices they've already released in the past.

    I used to have an HTC One X, part of the glory days of HTC with its gorgeous polycarbonate design and fantastic screen that seemed to float a little; a great camera too. Before that I had the HTC Incredible S (which was based on the HTC Desire HD) with its unusual back design that you either love or hate.
    My Incredible S didn't age all that well: after two years, the software had become sluggish. It would often lag and reload apps or even the home screen. The One X fared better, but it could still lag sometimes as I tried to go back to a previously opened app or the occasional stutter. Oddly enough, the One X also had some sort of internal SD-card instead of one unified storage medium.
    Batteries of both were as one might expect not in a good state after two years. Meanwhile my Samsung Galaxy S6 is still going after two years. It hasn't really slowed down and the battery is still good. Though that may also be because I often try to stop charging before or around 80% and it did have some of the newest components inside: NFS (1.0) for storage, LPDDR4 as RAM, the first Exynos that was baked in 14 nm (the Snapdragon 810 and previous Exynos CPU's were 20 nm or bigger) and was probably the first Exynos that was considered good. The infamous lag of Touchwiz had also disappeared with the S6 - whether through software or hardware or both. Software optimisations might also have played a role in letting it age well, now that I think about it.

  • @yiyiantony

    so HTC made a phone that is yet to launch and has a smaller battery, less RAM, much higher price tag than One Plus 3T with a no better camera, no better OS, less community support, and an OCD killer fingerprint home button. Oh and forgot to mention it doesn't have a headphone jack with fewer things packed in a larger body than OnePlus 3T. Someone may like glossy back but I am not really a fan of such vulnerable slippery back. HTC keep launching phones with outdated hardware (VOLT with Snapdragon 810 last year and U Ultra with 821 this year). There is no future for this company if they keep doing things like that.

    • @reeceama1078

      SN42 It is. Snapdragon 835 is already launched. and 821 is just a tuned-up version from last year's flagship 820. You know all the flagship phones released this year will have 835 and those are what U Ultra is competing with. I think it's fair to say its hardware is outdated.

    • @reeceama1078

    Excellent take Michael Fisher, as always! Here are my thoughts. Some parts of this phone are half baked, IMO. The back of the phone is absolutely stunning other than the copycat Samsung style camera sensor. The front is generic. Why not put the fingerprint sensor on the back and make a more artful camera sensor/fingerprint sensor array? With the fingerprint sensor on the back you have easy room for front firing Boomsound speakers, something practically everyone loves. HTC's current speaker arrangement is a solution to a problem no one had. Why not a bigger battery here? No brainier! They're charging top of the line money for this device and delivering less than other devices already on the market. With the looks and some better execution, they could have the big winner they're need to get back on top. Why HTC? They're so close, but still too far away. The Samsung Galaxy S8 and possibly the LG G6 are going to eat this device for lunch...

Apart from gorgeous new look there is nothing that would make me shell out the necessary cash to upgrade. Increasingly I'm leaning to consider the future Pixel as my next device given the pure Android experience and one assumes regular software updates that don't take months to feed through to the hardware.

    Absolutely awesome review, it's sad really to see a once great company like HTC struggle now with other OEM's if you had told me 6years ago that HTC will struggle against samsung and even huawei or lg I would say you must be high.
    HTC's problem is it doesn't listen to its fans at all, I remembered an HTC exec saying they did a poll of there customers and what they wanted in a phone and they said customers prefer thinner phones with smaller battery. and this was like 3 to 4 years back. I really don't know how many people they asked and if it was in the bar lol. HTC phones have always had issues with battery capacity, camera and lcd screens. HTC reluctance to listen to there fans like me has made us look somewhere else.

      Gurjant Dhiilon london depends on what you want from a smartphone. For the price is good, but it still has its flaws. Battery is just ok, and is a very large phone. I don't care about these things, so I'm happy with it. Camera is pretty good, screen also, performance is good (it heats up during gaming though), it looks great (but is definitely fragile). Beastly G your playing it pretty fast and loose with the term "smartphone". maybe if you don't include pre-touchscreen such the palm line of devices, or how about the Nokia n95 that was ahead of the competition. June 29, 2007, the first iPhone was released. October 22 , 2008 HTC Dream , introduced. Nokia n95 released March 2007.

      No I'm not actually. See, 1st off, they have plenty of older smartphones than the dream which was only the 1st Android powered phone. This is the problem, people don't really know their history when they think they do and don't realize that smartphones pre-date the term smartphone as well as yes, the iphone which offered nothing new but a really nice looking package at best. It wasn't the first smartphone, nor the first touchscreen phone, nor the first anything. Just the prettiest and best selling, also arguably the best functioning. But nothing new. HTC meanwhile has been making smartphones, namely windows mobile powered touchscreen phones since at least 2005. They even had dual speakers all the way back with the 8125 variants like the Wizard/Wing/Prodigy. I agree though that the Nokias and a few others qualify just fine, LG as well. Too many people think we just went from monochrome nokias and flip phones overnight. Not the case. There were lots of phones that the kiddies today and non tech enthusiasts had no idea even existed at the time. Especially in the US. I was browsing the shitty early web and watching tv on my phone on the metros in 2002-2003 in Seoul and Yokohama respectively. Smartphones weren't really even known about in the US. There was no mobile wireless network support for it like they had in east Asia already so it's not hard to see why that was.

      Yeah that sounds about right for those guys. Also great examples of early smartphones. The biggest point I'm trying to make is that we didn't just jump from the 'Zack Morris' 90s phone to the iphone like so many people try make it seem from blinded-hindsight. All the iphone could do better than any other phone at launch was look pretty and had support for pinch to zoom (even that, apple didn't invent though). Really the 1st one was still very crude too, didn't even have 3rd party apps, what it shipped with was what you got and that was it. Even early 2000s windows mobile had downloadable apps FFS!!

      romeomuradin HTC did however make the very first Android phone (T-Mobile G1) and some of the best Android phones ever since and now they have fallen way behind! I'm extremely disappointed and will be switching to a pure google experience with the Pixel.

    I just bought the ultra for the equivalent of 300 dollars here in the UK. I'm not dissapointed at all. Fast, responsive, great camera, big beautiful LCD panel, quick charge time and so much more! For the price that's lower than the oneplus 3t and the regular 5, this phone nails far more on the advanced fundamentals. If your in the market for a great phone and you don't care about a headphone Jack, buy this phone. Take it from me, you won't be disappointed.
    Oh, that's another thing. The ear buds are incredible. Rich, bassy, vibrant and loud. No need for regular earphones. It is the complete package.

      MrMobile [Michael Fisher] oh no I heard the part where you stated "and I imported the phone from Taiwan, with some help from some local friends" but isn't it at all possible that your local "friends" are indeed HTC?

      Ah. No, I asked my Taiwan-based friend at Mobile Geeks (www.mobilegeeks.com/) to buy the unit and ship it over.

      MrMobile [Michael Fisher] what networks does that particular unit work on here? would it work on GSM LTE bands?

    While the launch price was wrong. Now for around 400USD its really nice phablet, with good camera, great display and great looking shell.
