So basically all Bones bearings should be similar then since they all have the speed cream lubricant? Yeah that's true, going from old crusty bearings to any brand of new clean bearings would make a massive difference no matter the quality or price of those new bearings lol
I highkey disagree with this. Wear does affect but wear on a well kept ceramic or other high q bearing is very good compared to any cheap shit. If you buy a 12 dollar bearing set it never feels actually good when you roll. If as a person there is no difference between you riding a mazda and a porsche, then you are a person who doesnt care what bearings you ride. The difference is huge, and bearings ride very different. They also affect the way your trucks and wheels and board feel, because they are all connected
@@LeonPaxton my understanding is that yes, that should be the case. If you stripped 2 brand new sets of bearings and lubed them the same, they should ride the same. Ceramics should stay smoother over time since they won't deform from the abuse skateboarding throws at them, but they're also more brittle so you risk breaking them.

Roller Skater here (quads) and I bought the Bonez Reds back when I bought my skates (exactly a month ago). I don't have really much feedback on them yet. I pulled them apart earlier and cleaned them. They were pretty dirty; I skate regularly, and I think that is why. I am confused though, when I put them back together, the red shields, I can't remember if they go on front and back side of the wheel. I am missing one shield, honestly, I am thinking about just taking the other red cap shields off, and doing a trial and error, where this is my first set of the bonez redz. I don't know, either that or I can go to the skate shop and have them find me another red cap replacement. Did it yield good results when you took the caps off? Did you notice the bearings getting disgusting and hard to clean? Feedback would be great.
There’s no benefit at all man, the shields are removable so you can clean the bearings out and then put the caps back on but I just take them off because it looks and sounds better but it definitely reduces the life of your bearings because more dirt and water can get into them
@@LeonPaxton First night rolling without the caps in. I definitely think I like it better. This is a trial and error thing. If they break next week, then I'll know to leave the caps in. They're just bearings, I can and will buy more for spares lol. Thanks for your help.

I’ll go with Super Reds or Race Reds (the ones with built in spacers). Standard Reds or Big Balls have exploded on me after very little skating. But yeah mostly it’s about the wheel and the surface.
@@LeonPaxton the first Big Ball one blew out after around 10 hours of skating. The next took probably another 30 hours of skating. And this was only from simple flat ground. Reds also only other bearing so far that has exploded on me. I’ve had the same set of Race Reds for over three years now though. Not skating those everytime I go out but still.
i also used red bones and have also tried other branded bearings but i always buy red bones as they are the cheapest with good quality. i only pop out the shield whenever they are bent or loosen
I've skated modus black bearings longboarding a lot and they're alright for how cheap they were. I like to buy bearings that are cheap but good (like reds) so you can replace them often and get that fresh out of the box feeling. That long 50-50 grind was gnarly as! Do you prefer approaching the grind slow or fast? I'm noticing I slip out if I hit a grind too fast, but stumble if I hit it too slow. Also, I'm finding it hard waxing to a point the ledge is buttery and predictable but not icy.
I actually haven't tried any Modus bearings before 🤔 Yeah dude, Reds are actually so good for their price! Thanks dude 🙏🏼 Well if I'm trying to grind for a long distance like that long ledge then you definitely need a lot of speed but if I'm trying to learn a new trick or work on the lock in of certain tricks then I tend to go a lot slower but I'm someone that likes a ledge or rail to be so waxed that it's almost dangerous to skate but that way I can go slow and work on locking in a grind or slide and hold it for a long time
For a few years now ive been cleaning my bearings and only replacing the ones that are too far gone. I have mismatched bearings on all my boards. I couldnt tell u whats good or whats not LOL. But i will say that the swiss and my quantums stayed consistent out of the bunch
I had the same bad experience with the super reds! They became slow very quickly and seized after a few months, my first reds in early 2000s lasted me years. Currently I ride only Reds Big Balls for only 5 euros more than the Reds and i love them so far, have 4 sets already on all my wheel setups. Combined with Powell Dragons 54mm V4 it feels like I'm flying on a hoverboard. The Bronson G3s I had this spring sucked and I had to replace them after just 3 weeks of riding, absolute worst bearings so far, especially for 45 euros.
Yeah I was so surprised when that happened since they are supposed to be an upgrade from the standard Reds! That sounds like a good combo, I think I’m going to have to try the big balls next 👌🏽
I’ve had the same experience with super reds they were incredible imo and super fast but die quick unless you clean them. I just cleaned mine and they are fast af again. The lube makes the scratch’s or damage to the balls less noticeable and now they are pretty much brand new. I already ordered Bronson ceramics though I hope they are faster lol.

Rocking superreds since summer of 2021 and very happy to pay the 15euro diff. Definitely faster than my normal reds of junts OG. Maybe you just had a bad batch? Or do you roll them without the shields? Sand and dirt f things up fast. +1 for the vid tho
Damn dude, I must have just got a set of duds then 👎🏽 I didn't pop the shields off those ones but I have been popping my shields off lately without any problems at all 🤔
Idk if they’re easy to get in Australia but you should try any of the Quantum bearings, I’ve never tried them myself but have heard only good things and they’re supposed to be fast and durable even moreso than bones bearings
I have Super Reds that have been on for years and still have fantastic long spin. I use Jamie Foy's method of cleaning lubing them with Speed Cream and still to this day no problems. Huh???
@@LeonPaxtonoh ok. I spacers arrived a few days after but they different than the self centering ones. What are spacers for? I don’t need them between my bearings in inline skates?
@@jacedragon You need the spacers if you don't want to shorten the lifespan of your bearings. When you tighten the axle on your inline skates, it puts a lot of the pressure on the inner race of the bearings. This pressure is then transferred to the balls inside the bearings restricting them from rolling smoothly. The spacers alleviate this pressure by connecting the two bearings together and cancel out the pressure that is otherwise transferred to the bearing balls.
I've always used bones reds for 20+ years. Always loved them. Trying out the big balls version at the minute, they're nice too only a tad more expensive.
I have never heard of shieldless bearings. If you don’t like the color, you could get some white bearings and put those shields in whatever you skate next. Or don’t worry about it cause they’ll be black soon anyway.
I use reds most of my life. Much cheaper than the swiss, a bit slower (wich may be good for non professionals) but durable. But nowadays I prefer the Bronsons G3. A tad pricier than the reds but faster and durable. They´re middle place within Reds and Swiss.
Maybe they're good in Aus cos it never rains there but here in the UK, I find Reds OK until it gets a little bit wet - then they're trashed. It's not like I'm going to deliberately skate in the rain but sometimes U can be on the way somewhere or coming home and get hit by a shower. Anyway I accidentally ended up on some 'Enuff Swiss' bearings that were cheaper than Reds but have lasted for ages, even through a few wet days in the City. I recommend!
just buy wholesale 608RS bearings, take the shields off, soak them in rubbing alcohol or acetone to remove the packing grease, use a drop of motor oil, replace the shields and you have a premium bearing.
They're not easy to find anymore but Eleven/11 bearings are the best if you're not springing for Swiss. They're $20 a set in the U.S. Swiss last forever, I have a set that's 23 years old, still rolling.
I used Bronson, reds, Swiss, and now I have on Indy’s, but after these bearings that I am using, I’m just going to buy some cheap shop bearings, take the shield off and call it good.
Um here we have some bearings designed to have a shield/seal to keep in lubricant and keep out dirt and grime but let’s get rid of that because I don’t like it. Let’s test these out now and see how they work.
I've been using the same red since last Christmas gonna see how long I can make them last got speed cream too I've tried other bearings brands too like modus and rush and neither seem to work as well or last as long as reds the rush ones I kept having the shield pop off for no reason and the modus crapped out in about 6 or 5 months that's good amount time but these were 30$ modus ones soo they should be better at least you'd think so also a tip for cleaning bearings use dish soap and water afterwards yo clean them little more after cleaning them iso alcohol it's to get that extra grease and tar of the shields and bearings also makes them look brand new almost
That’s sick man, I do remember Reds always lasting a long time! Yeah Reds are definitely a clear winner for best bearings around that price range 👌🏽 Thanks for the tips dude, I’ll try it out 🙏🏽
@@LeonPaxton here in the states the regular Swiss are about $65-70 so it sounds like they’re way marked up on your side of the pond, which sucks. @@LeonPaxton the Swiss ceramics are by far the best bearings I’ve tried in 40 years of skating. They last years and spin so much longer than anything else. I’ve got Reds in 3 other sets of wheels and they’re great for the money.
I stick to mosaic bearings nowadays, i used to ride the reds but not anymore. Mosaic bearings are made in spain, and in my opinion are higher than classic bones bearings for a cheeper price.
I get the swiss just because I think it's dope they were neutral during ww2. But you know, they have mad amounts of mountain bunkers so maybe it's not that impressive, they just got lucky with their geography.
Bones is just a Stacy Peralta brand that's marketed to the uninitiated. Bearings in a skating environment are exposed to very low loads and don't require a specialized ceramic composition.
I still love standard reds, they are fast enough, they can get dirty, take a fucking beating and still perform. Also cheap enough to just buy new ones when they finally do go to shit. I am also in Canada and skate in cold weather in the winters quite often, other brands always go to shit in the winter, the reds dont.
I always buy it from good skateshop. I wish they are not fake lol, but same bad luck with super reds, big balls and swiss. Maybe the ground here is too bad.
I got a set of the Bones Reds Ceramics like 6 years ago. I popped the shields day one, and literally haven’t touched them other than switching them to new wheels. As I said that was six years ago, and I’ve done absolutely nothing with them. They are still fast and smooth as hell. I think they where like $70 (a bit steep, but still half the price of Swiss Ceramics.) seriously you should check them out, I’ve never had bearings last like these. And I’ve had basically almost all the bearings over the last three decades.
Damn dude! I guess the price doesn't matter if they have lasted 6 years 🙌🏼 I don't really have problems with my bearings either and I pop the shields off and don't clean them or anything either lol
@@LeonPaxton yeah I figure I might be saving money… Like I’d probably be on my fourth set of normal Reds, so honestly $70 for six years of use. I probably would have spent $80 over time switching my bearings every year.
I would say spending more than $20-30 on bearings will never be worth it. I've had some amazing experiences with Independent GP-S bearings, which are in fact even cheaper. Same goes for Mini Logo bearings, which are rebranded Reds standards. I also don't believe any of the 'specialised' bearings make all that much sense except for maybe ceramics when you intend to cruise through rain. Those _should_ last longer in such cases. But they are more vulnerable, especially when it comes to impact skating.
I'm considering getting the independent gp-s. I was also thinking about the mini logos. Besides being made by Powell, how do you actually know that the mini logo bearings are rebranded reds?
I wanna see you guys skate that curved ledge at that plastic bench park so bad! There's gotta be something wrong with it right? It looks like it would be so fun.
Yeah dude, the panels are running the opposite way compared to the long straight bench so you can't grind it because the gaps between the panels are too big but it might work for tail or nose slides 🤔
When i was a kid, i would use really bad bearings from time to time. But if you soak them in wd40 overnight, they literally turn into abec 9s and it LASTS. Id do it to better bearings too and it just conditions them nicely and adds some smoothness. I had some blind bearings at one point, and would remove and replace the shields and soak em, and they worked amazingly
They were called china bones not just because they are made in china, but because they used to actually be called that on the packaging and marketing when they came out over 20 years ago. Normal bones were not that expensive back then either, but they were never considered cheap. They are made to the same specs but using different steels and cheaper manufacturing. The real swiss bearings have a more premium steel which definitely helps them last longer and ride smoother overall.
Oh true, I didn't know they actually labelled them that way too 🤔 Yeah dude, Bones Swiss are definitely top of the line bearings but the price of Reds just make them way more reasonable lol

@@LeonPaxton bro you here answering 3 day old comments at the same time 😂
@@LeonPaxton my understanding is that yes, that should be the case. If you stripped 2 brand new sets of bearings and lubed them the same, they should ride the same. Ceramics should stay smoother over time since they won't deform from the abuse skateboarding throws at them, but they're also more brittle so you risk breaking them.
Yeah dude, it's hard to keep up with them all 😂
Bro I'm the same way when I remove the windshield and all four windows from my car, like I know the interior won't last as long, but it makes me feel like I'm going faster, because the wind hits me more. I also remove the hood so I can show my engine, I have a blast going through car washes. 😆😂

For sure man! These are the best bearings on the market for their price 🙌🏼
ok i will buy them!
I grew up riding reds, they are what my dad rode for as long as ive known.
Yeah dude, Reds are the best!
I’ll go with Super Reds or Race Reds (the ones with built in spacers). Standard Reds or Big Balls have exploded on me after very little skating. But yeah mostly it’s about the wheel and the surface.

I’ve had the same set of Race Reds for over three years now though. Not skating those everytime I go out but still.
i also used red bones and have also tried other branded bearings but i always buy red bones as they are the cheapest with good quality. i only pop out the shield whenever they are bent or loosen
Yeah dude, it's always a safe bet going with reds 👌🏼
Love the gameboy synth sound in whatever song this is
I've skated modus black bearings longboarding a lot and they're alright for how cheap they were.
I actually haven't tried any Modus bearings before 🤔
Yeah dude, Reds are actually so good for their price!

+1 for Bones Big Balls, best cost/benefit for me so far.

Oh sick, so cleaning them definitely helps then 👌🏽
Mine came without spacers. What spacers do I use for inline skates with these bearings?
These ones don't actually come with spacers so I don't use any
@@LeonPaxtonoh ok. I spacers arrived a few days after but they different than the self centering ones. What are spacers for? I don’t need them between my bearings in inline skates?
They are just so both beaeings become connected and work as one whole unit but I'm not sure what the positives of that are 🤔
@@jacedragon You need the spacers if you don't want to shorten the lifespan of your bearings.
Trying out the big balls version at the minute, they're nice too only a tad more expensive.

spitfire classic bearings also works really well
Maybe they're good in Aus cos it never rains there but here in the UK, I find Reds OK until it gets a little bit wet - then they're trashed.

I've got them at the moment, I just bought them because that's what I kept hearing about.
They are definitely worth the price too 👌🏽😊
I've been using the same red since last Christmas gonna see how long I can make them last got speed cream too I've tried other bearings brands too like modus and rush and neither seem to work as well or last as long as reds the rush ones I kept having the shield pop off for no reason and the modus crapped out in about 6 or 5 months that's good amount time but these were 30$ modus ones soo they should be better at least you'd think so also a tip for cleaning bearings use dish soap and water afterwards yo clean them little more after cleaning them iso alcohol it's to get that extra grease and tar of the shields and bearings also makes them look brand new almost

I don't really have problems with my bearings either and I pop the shields off and don't clean them or anything either lol
@@LeonPaxton yeah I figure I might be saving money… Like I’d probably be on my fourth set of normal Reds, so honestly $70 for six years of use. I probably would have spent $80 over time switching my bearings every year.
Yeah dude, you would have spent more and had to waste time changing bearings throughout that period too lol
Yeah that's kind of how I feel too!
Even the $20 Spitfire Cheap shots have been great bearings!

That's always a good way to bring bearings back to life!
Oh true, I didn't know they actually labelled them that way too 🤔
