  • EDC Fire: Zippo Butane Torch or Standard Wick??
If youre like me, you love the idea of going above and beyond bare minimum. For me, I consider the BIC lighter the Toyota Camry of the everyday carry world. Everyone has one, they work great, cheap, no complaints at all. But lets be honest here, some of us might want to upgrade from basic, bare bones and add alittle bit of flare to our pockets. Ive been a huge fan of zippos for well over 20 years. The look, feel, sound, design is just outstanding to me. However, Ive always been annoyed with one thing. In the video, I discuss the solution to that problem.
Zippo I used in this video was an all Brass, Armor version of your standard zippo lighter:
    www.amazon.com...
The Zippo brand butane, dual torch insert I used in this video:

I carry a butane torch on my Firehawk. Butane is excellent in cold environments especially in ice situations for melting ice of things like paddle locks, etc. And it's unmatched for fire starting speed and ability in adverse situations. That and a little inner tube..🔥🔥🔥
Thank you for the Zippo info..i didn't know they made a butane insert..i should get out more and quit being a backwoods hick lol.
Still praying for you and yours my friend.

They do a butane insert eith soft flame, a single jet insert and also a double jet insert. They even do a pipe insert for lighting pipes (hole on side not the top for the flame). Also they do rubber caps for normal zippos to stop fuel evaporation.

They do actually make a different butane style insert I bought last week. It's just like a regular zippo using the flint wheel to spark, and gives off a yellow flame just like a bic lighter. This one is my personal favorite.

I’ve purchased all of their inserts. The butane ones are absolutely incredible! I don’t even smoke; I just love carrying a lighter with me (and a leatherman). I prefer the butane ones over the traditional wicking lighters because the lighter fluid is messy and can stain the inside of the case. And like you said, the fluid evaporates and the lighter won’t work when you need it to. But with butane this thing is next level amazing. Great video!

✅ I have several standard Zippo lighters... I switched a few to the butane inserts...I've found them to be quite handy for lighting damp tinder to melting silver solder for wire to wire connections and the bonus is I don't have to worry about the standard fluid leaking out into my pack or pocket.

I bought the butane insert a few weeks ago and its excellent in terms of quality. But I noticed that the torch flame burns the cigarette at a much higher temperature than a soft flame and the cigarette doesn't taste and feel the same. So I switched back to the standard insert. I'll keep the butane insert though for other stuff.

This is an old video, relatively speaking. Zippo now makes a soft flame butane insert that also uses flints for ignition.

My only complaint with it is, like current Bic lighters, you can't adjust the flame.

  • @tomhickman1006

I prefer this to a Bic, I weld sometimes and Bic style butane lighters have had welders forget they had the lighter in a front pocket, hot metal burned through the pants and plastic butane tank and exploded, resulting in a bad injury.
Very unlikely this will occur with the Zippo.

Yes butane is better as it seals the gas inside and offers a clean fire, butane inserts are also much cleaner for Zippo brand lighters as it doesn't create rust on the insert or case. I just ordered Zippo Yellow flame as I don't like the high butane cost of torch. Once I get it I'll have a butane, arc, and original zippo inserts all with cases so I can use all energy sources as fuel.

actually u need to adjust setting few times while using the lighter:
    1) from lowest when lighter has just been refilled and tank is close to full.
    2) to the highest setting when tanks is close to empty.
and that limiter should be removed or readjusted to make lighter functional when there is less the 50% fuel left in tank.

    $ 14.95 for insert
$ 6.95 shipping to Texas that was kinda steep

I cant speak to that as i do use it just not often as I dont smoke. Have gone a month between refills which is leaps and bounds better than a regular fluid zippo

    • @PalmettoPrepared

Depends on how long you hold down the button but average as per zippo is 40-50 strikes

you killed my father prepare to die.....good zippo, must have....always always reminds me of my dad for sure. I can smell the butane even thinking about it. I love Zippo (I have both regular and torch) plus their hand warmers are a basic of my kits. One can buy a very good Zippo off ebay for pennies on the dollar....great video, good to touch base on things like this.

Yep, their handwarmer rocks for when im hunting. Its a must have for the trigger finger sensitivity. I was shocked how cheap Zippos were on amazon. I can only imagine how cheap they are on ebay. Figured it would be a good idea to show a good find I didnt even know existed until a few months ago. Havent seen many people talk about it so I thought id make a good Guinea pig

Typical American consumer. Wow I bought something new that I didn't know I need. I keep buying stuff. I can't stop buying stuff. Out with the old thing that was the best thing that isn't anymore. Please tell me where I can buy more new stuff I don't need. I can't fill this big empty hole in my pathetic life.

Butane insert, then it's not a zippo anymore salesman. Just put the zippo in a mini zip lock bag. You can also top off the fuel a few times a week if your that worried about it. Zippo lighters are made of metal. They are tough and resilient and dependable. They have been around a long time and used by soldiers for many years. Electronic butane style lighters are prone to breaking. They have plastic parts. The electronic parts are prone to breaking. Not dependable in a survival situation in extreme weather situations either. Zippos are still around after all these years for a good reason.
