As always, thank you for the content and your service! I've been using those Zippo Typhoon matches for some time, and they blow other "stormproof" matches out of the water...no contest. I cut them down and put them in a smaller stormproof match container, then used the Typhoon match holder for fat wood and vaseline cotton balls. Thanks again Stoker!💪🏽🇺🇲🤘🏽
Great video! I've carried my grandfathers Zippo for years. In my fire kit, a Gerber strikeforce kit with the accompanying tinder blocks, magnesium shavings, and a spare ferro rod with ceramic striker. Separate from that I'll carry potassium permanganate and glycerin for a delayed fire starter if i need to prep it. (Glycerin (or variant) is in antifreeze, so add a little powder to a puddle of antifreeze which is always easy to find in a vehicle.)
I make my own storm proof matches. Grab some 2 ply toilet paper or the really cheap 1 ply paper. Separate the toilet paper if it’s 2 ply, tear or cut the paper into the length of the match. Leave enough to hold on to the match. Begin to tightly wrap the toilet paper around the match. When you have that done grab some wax and melt it. Dip the matches in n the wax. Allow the matches to dry completely. Once that is finished pick some of the wax off the match head so it will strike better or leave it until your ready to use.
I remember the good ole Zippo lighters, very durable and reliable. I wasn't of the other fire-starting gear. Something I'll have to add to my outdoor kit! Thanks for the video!
I have a Zippo that came with the traditional insert, but I swapped it out for one of their single torch flame butane inserts. They're a lot more wind resistant. Just make sure you bleed off any excess air in the lighter tank before a refill for trouble-free operation, as with any butane lighter. For the traditional type of flame the OG Zippo insert gives, I instead use a Clipper lighter. Flint and striker wheel can be replaced, can be refilled with butane, lasts for years, one guy said he has one that's been through the washing machine a dozen times and functions fine. It doesn't give you Zippo-leg from leaking fluid and doesn't evaporate. Also can generally be found at your local smoke shops for a couple bucks a lighter. They come in many colors and styles, also a translucent model to better see fluid levels; that's the one I'd mostly use outdoors. There's also metal body versions for around 12 bucks online. Amazon carries them. Clippers have been around for decades. More well-know in other places than the states. Most just go with disposable Bics here instead, which is silly. And if you lose a 2 dollar Clipper in the woods, so what. For the price you'll cry less than losing a favorite Zippo, also for the price you'll have several backups stashed around.
Great video, Stoker. Those Stormproof matches are the real deal. I stopped buying those UCO Hurricane mstches since the Zippo brand were more reliable. I purchased the Mag Strike and Emergency Fire Kit. Also picked up the Fire Starting Multi Tool. My Walmart has a good selection of these Zippo products.
I’d say ZIPPO has certainly stepped up their game! There may long be a market for the traditional zippo lighter…nostalgia or something, but with folks getting smart about smoking (myself included after 46 years of smoking) and quitting the cancer/COPD sticks, zippo needed a market audience…and the no doubt found them cause I’m searching them out right now for me and, some birthday and Christmas gifts!! Very cool episode!! Sharing this out!
Thank you for this video. You offered great reviews of Zippo products. (I have always trusted Zippo lighters and Case knives.) The items you demoed look like really good stuff and will need to find their way into my fire kit. A classic Zippo with a good load of fluid and a one-inch-long piece of bicycle innertube placed so as to seal the lid will serve you well. I carry a 30-minute road flare in my fire kit. It will thaw out numb fingers and dry out small kindling if it is not too wet. The flare is perfect in those situations where one needs a fire immediately and may be suffering from hand injuries and/or the early stages of hypothermia. One can never have too many ways to make a fire. Again, thank you for this video.
That's a very solid Ferro Rod, looks like a very solid line of products there, sweet! I used to carry a Zippo lighter and have a few in a collection, but they just suck up lighter fluid, Bic lighters last way longer in the general use sense without having to carry extra fluid to refill a Zippo. Always gotta have multiple forms of firestarting though, that should be a common sense SOP.
I'm still on the fence about matches that have to be struck on a particular striker. Th "strike on box" type. They may be safer to carry, but they're unreliable when their striking surface gets wet. (Happened at the last of this video). A strike anywhere version of the Typhoon match would be wonderful. That's my only beef with the Zippo system. Zippo, as always, has us covered. Great Video. Love the outro!
I don’t smoke, but I NEVER leave the house without a Zippo in my pocket… they remind me of both of my grandpas and all my uncles, long summer days, bonfires… i have several that have been handed down to me over the years, all lined up on my dresser. My wife bought me a vintage brass one a few years back and it’s lit every campfire, every leaf pile, every candle since. Hopefully someday it will go in my grandsons pocket. Anyone who’s ever carried a Zippo knows they aren’t “emergency” lighters, they require lots of maintenance, keeping them fueled, keeping the wick trimmed and replacing the flint, to me that’s part of the coolness, it’s a ceremony, almost a liturgy… getting it ready for the day, lighting it up, snapping it shut and dropping all the memories into my pocket.
Thanks for the quick and dirty review. I wasn't aware of those items but I'll be looking them up. I like that the match holder is a larger diameter, that will aid in being able to open it when or if you have wet or cold hands!
My family was on vacation in Tennessee a while back and I noticed some of this stuff at the Smoky Mountain Knife Works. I thought about buying the fire wheel but didn't.
Wow, it looks like Zippo has really done their homework on this system !! What a perfect combination, the good old classic flip top Zippo and these items !!!!!!
That Ferro Rod really throws some good Sparks. I'm going to have to find one. I'm going to have to pick up one of their tinder kits too. My shackles are spoken for for a while though. I need to buy a protractor . I make a small keychain spark based Firestarter made from empty butane lighters. I cut the bottom of the Flint tube off and add a screw so that I can replace the Flint
Great video. I always enjoy learning about new product. Zippo was or is made right here in Pa. I still have a few of my dad's zippo lighters. There still is a market for zippo collectors. I will check out your links to these new products. They seem like a winner from a long time flame making company. Thanks
Zippo thigh burns are real, they make a good fluid/flint carrier, but butane inserts don't leak or evap fuel. Must be maintained though esp. torch styles. I wouldnt carry butane for decades till i figured out how to keep running. I still carry 2 to have 1. Odor lower w butane too.
I found all those kits at tractor supply and I carry them religiously they have never let me down , no matter what kind of weather I'm in. As a matter of fact I bought 4 of everything so I would not run out for a real long time. Dwayne
Was thinking of buying some of those storm matches last time I was out at one of the outdoor stores. Actually thought of getting it just for the container. Use to always carry an old school Zippo lighter, still keep one in my go bag with a can of Zippo fluid, but not in my pocket. Have had too much lighter fluid leak in my pocket and burn my skin.
I don’t have the Zippo ferro rod, but I do have the other two. They are outstanding pieces of kit. I keep extra flints in the sparking fire kit, and the Zippo matches are even more robust than the UCO Titan Matches (imho). I put a 3/16”X2 1/2” ferro rod in the match container because I’m always thinking of longevity if I get stuck out longer than planned. I carried a Zippo lighter way back in the day, but got tired of the fluid leaking out in my trousers. I can’t remember ever carrying a lighter into the wilderness. I never had a need for one. I do have a Numyth Tohill lighter that I bought at the BLADE Show in 2015. But it lives in an emergency kit in Mumma Bear’s pack. Even after being unopened for a year, it lights right up. I would like to see Zippo make a tradition lighter that seals tight when closed. I might just buy one of those. Semper Fi 🇺🇸
I like the flint striker with the fire starter pads with the center hole. My son lost an arm so he’s always looking for ways to make two handed tasks simpler, and the striker will do that. I also grabbed a 10 pack of extra tinder rolls. It holds 5 which he’ll now have two refills for. Picked up a couple of the Epiphany Outdoor Gear Pocket Bellows you’ve got in your Amazon store as well. Yea, I could find natural stuff but, why waste time hunting when the Epiphany Outdoor Gear Pocket Bellows racks in at 3 1/2” collapsed and .08 of an ounce! Fits nicely in the fire kit at 15 bucks AND a Nam vet owned and operated business! Your store could get me in a lot of trouble brother!!😎👊🏻🇺🇸
I don't smoke except tires. Yet, I love my Zippo. Made in Pennsylvania. What could be more American than a 1911, a Garand, and a Zippo? They traveled together with our Greatest Generation. I'm sure every guy over 40 knows that classic Zippo sound. Almost like and endblock on ejection. When I got serious about kit, I put my Zippo in it. A month later I learned why Pop Pop had me fill his so frequently. I thought it was caused he went through a carton a week. I was wrong. So the Zippo left my kit, but stays in my heart forever. BTW, the greatest generation used AV gas frequently. For some reason I can hear my Mama saying don't play with lighters and gas, LOL....
I have used the zippo fire starter line shown here and found that... I love the zippo matches with the case and consider it the best match set-up in the world. The fero rod set is a good design and works great. I love the old zippo lighter and own a couple of them. But I don't care for the zippo fire kit with the tinder tabs. It is not a matter of quality, and the tinder is good, I just hate the little "empty lighter style" ignition.
I recently went on a slim antique zippo buying spree lol. 1978 I carry everday with me aka my birth year. 61 slim black my moms bday God rest your soul mom❤️and I’m going to get a 56 slim one soon because of my beautiful ex girlfriend which I may have to get two one for her to add to her in honor of her father’s collection which she’s never been a smoker which I always thought was great! The old Zippos and in particular the smell of lighter fluid reminds me of my grandfather and uncles. It was long ago & they're in heaven now.
My life was the same way. Just add some cigar smoke to the aroma to make it perfect
I don't smoke but carry a Zippo on my everyday as a reminder for that exact reason. Also, you never know when you may a flame.
Me too. The smell of. Zippo beings back good memories of my childhood and my uncles. Funny how just a scent can bring so much back in your thoughts. 🙂
