REMOVING AND INSTALLING BATTERY IN A 2017 FORD ESCAPE SE

- Hello you all!
Me again. This time I am working with a 2017 Ford Escape SE.
We bought this a salvage, and after restoring it, the battery warning light is on.
My wife suggested to take the battery to Auto Zone for checking. Little did I know that the battery was buried under plastic and hard to get to… So, after checking two UA-cam videos in how to do it… here is mi version.
Music: LITTLE GUITAR
From WWW.BENDSOUND.COM

Intro: Nikon 3200
The rest: Gopro Hero 6
Amazing instructions! Thank you so much. Seemed like an overwhelming task at first, but the way you broke it down (and even told the size tools to use) made it a relatively painless process. Great video!
This took me and my wife 30 min to complete. Thank you you made it easy
Jesus, at least you didn't have to take the back wheels off.
The engineers are idiot at least they never punish Ford customers to remove engine, all doors and wheels just to remove the battery inside the car.
Thanks so much this helped me a lot! Now I'm off to trading this car in and getting a different one. 😁👍
Funny!
You're going to find there are many vehicles these days that make it difficult to remove the battery, choose wisely.
Yes !! I shoulda did better research or something because this is not it .
Thank you for this. Changed my wife’s battery as a surprise thanks to you.
Thanks so much for your video! I watched it a few times and then ventured out to change out my battery. All went perfectly! Excellent job!
Thanks for the video. I'm glad I attempted this version of removal than the other. This method is much easier than it looks, the hardest part was wiggling off the wipers. Also, if your negative terminal has the white corrosion on it like my did, this method makes the terminal more accessible for cleaning.
Thank you for posting this. I opened the hood and was like wtf?! Haha
Me too. Lol.
Found this video after Advanced Auto Parts wouldn’t install mine. I watched it about 6 times and gave it a go. I know nothing when it comes to auto maintenance and was able to swap it out without a hitch! 55 mins start to finish. Thanks!!!
Super glad, it help you.
All good info. I prefer disconnecting the black/negative/ground first. Doing the red/positive first, if your tool touches a part of the car that is also connected to the ground, bad things can happen to you, your tools, and/or the car depending on the route of the current and the status of the battery. I do this no matter what work I'm doing if it requires disconnection of the battery. And of course reverse when reconnecting; the negative is the first thing I disconnect and the last thing I reconnect.
What an awesome, easy to follow video. Just finished replacing the battery in my ‘17 Escape without a hitch. Well, actually one hitch.
the wipers were not put back properly; one doesn’t even move while the other would stab someone repeatedly if they were standing next to the car. My bad. Thank you for the instructions.
I’m having the same problem
Bro!!!!! Thank you soooooooo much for this video!!!!!! So detailed and to the point!!!!
You have to reset the Battery Monitoring System (BMS) following battery replacement. Once replacement is completed, do the following: With Key On and Engine Off, flash the brights 5x, press the brake 3x. The preceding steps need to be completed in 10 seconds or so. Wait for the battery light to flash 2-3x, then Key Off.
I will try it next time.
Thanks for your video. Very helpful.
I am glad it helped you.
Just wanted to say thanks for the well done video...I had to replace my battery and your video saved me a lot of time with helpful tips. Thanks again!
I am glad.
There is an easier way to remove the battery, according to a comment I received. I will try it as soon as I get some time to try it. Thanks again.

Thanks for making this video. The steps were very easy to follow.
Wish I could give more thumbs up, you really helped!
Thanks so much. I could not have changed this battery without your video! Much thanks!!
Thank you very much- it helped a lot !!!
Amazing video 💪🏻
Thank you for posting, saved me time from having to figure it out!!
Thank you for your video I was able to change the battery in my 2017 escape by myself with your expert help
Just an FYI for anyone doing this instead of taking the wipers and everything apart. You can just remove the air filter housing which is not bolted down and use a flat head or a 1/4 inch socket on the hose clamp then you can disconnect and slide the battery through the front in half the time. This way it will take less than a half an hour
too bad I couldnt get the air filter housing out, had to put everything back and go this route
Right this video is stupid
@@Notaltunes let me guess you didnt remove the bolt holding air filter housing down
I cam confirm that this works. However, sliding the negative terminal off was a pain. Still saved time.
It took my brother an hour and a half doing it that way and his hands got cut the hell up. I told him he should've just removed the windshield wipers. He agreed
Muchas gracias exelcnte video. Me fue de mucha ayuda.
Gracias por comentar.
My wife purchased a '17 Escape yesterday. I'll let her change the battery.
Funny.
Thank you, Sir!! 🍻
Easy task. Great guide. I had a fun time .. The removal/install took less than an hr (didn't count the trip to autozone).
I started clapping to the song and forgot about the video.
This is very helpful. I am going to replace my battery tomorrow.
Best of luck. Have fun.
This video is very explicit. I went through the steps quite easily with the correct tools. The wipers have to be properly aligned.
Thanks! Saved me $50.
Glad I could help!
Thank you. Your demonstration was spot on and extremely beneficial!
It was like changing a battery in something European. I opened the hood and said, "Where the f#*k is the battery?"
A week after changing mine it wouldn’t start. Mechanic first thought starter but that wasn’t the issue. It’s currently setting at the dealership till the mechanic comes in tomo. I’m being told after changing the battery the car has to be reprogrammed. Is that right? Looking for a heads up if that might not be my issue & it cost me more. Thanks for your time!
Because it is european.
Love this video man.
Appreciate it!
Nicely done. Easy to understand. Thank you.
Thanks for the video. Made my battery change a snap.
Or just remove the airbox and use a wrench to get the negative terminal off. This was crazy overkill 😅
haha, my thoughts exactly... glad i looked further, this seemed insane
Wow there is a bright side I thought I would need to pull the windshield too. What a PITA to change a battery.
Ha, ha, ha... Funny.
Thanks for this! At least we didn’t have to drop the engine!
Fantastic! Thank you so much, instructions were perfect.
i guess he doesn't realize that the last step he does(that folding battery box door) is the way to remove the battery.
It can easily be slid out from under without removing the wipers, the 2 air damn's, the clips, the weather stripping or the break fluid reservoir.
By removing the air filter box that folding battery box door drops down so the battery can easily be slid right out towards the front of the car.
(Must disconnect pos/neg and battery support screws of course)
damn
I’m going to give that ago tomorrow. Ty
Thanks man!!! Welcome to the future...where removing your battery requires knowledge lol
FFS, now I remember why I always bought Toyota’s. What a freakin hassle.
You make this job waaaaaaay more complicated than it needs to be.
I know. There is always an easier way.
Ryley, where's your video???
This was the dumbest area to put a battery. If an the things that need to be easily accessible... Youd think a battery would be pretty high on the list.
Thanks for the awesome video! Will definitely reference it when my time comes😂
Thank you sooooo much!! If I had a million dollars itd be yours
Lie
great video, saved me some time.
Thank you. Great instructions.
It also can be done by removing the air filter housing but I am thinking this might be less frustrating. Both methods are ridiculous. I guess there was not other place to put the battery.
This was some master engineering idea to put this battery in the most easy accessible spot Bravo to the engineer on this bullshit!!
Having replaced a 2017 Ford Escape battery recently, I can wholeheartedly endorse this method. Why do I say this? Because I thought the other method of removing the air filter/intake was the easier looking method. It is not. This is the way, my friends... this is the way. Also, here's a life tip: Don't believe your college age kid who knows nothing about cars when they tell you it does not auto stop/start. Check for yourself. 😁 And get the AGM battery.
Your way is the best way, just add how to line up the wipers.
This was super helpful!
This is the hard way. Take the tip of the air cleaner of and bring out the front. Unhook the neg terminal once you slide the battery out on top of the air cleaner housing. Takes ten minutes to remove and replace.
Thanks for the suggestion. I will give it a try.
Greg,Do a video!
I will give it a try. Thanks.
Thanks for the share. This is ridiculous
Tell me about it.
I just changed it again; four years later. I used a second method, and of course I made a video.
Great video!
I have a friend that has a Nissan Titans the starter is in the back of the engine by the driver's knee nearly have to move the engine to get to it they do this kind of s*** so it make it tough on people to do it themselves you have to take it to the shop, all of this is premeditated and planned into their Blueprinting build
Good info but spastic camera action makes one dizzy.
Thank you!
This seems to be a long process. I removed the air box and my battery out and back in in about 45 minutes.
I was told I have to “program” the new battery after installation. How do I do that?
Hello,
I have no idea. When I did it, I didn't do anything else to it. It worked fine.
But I recommend contacting your ford dealer.
Thanks! Made it very easy for such a dumb design
I am having trouble with my 2017 escape. It acts like it has a short. Sometimes won't start, other times dies while driving. Anybody have that problem?
I’m a ford mechanic, in the uk , this isn’t the correct way of removing the battery. Remove the air filter box and slide the battery forwards
Appreciate the comment. I am a regular guy that manage to succesfully remove the battery. I just happened to use a more complicated method. For sure I will try the " air filter" style.
What would cause the engine light to come on after changing the battery ?
Thank you. They sure make it difficult to be able to do a simple thing. Is this on purpose? 🤔🤔
definitely helpful!
You don't have to take the cowl off. Just remove the airbox and it will slide out.
Removing the air box is much easier
Excellent
Great video. But this is straight up poopy doops! What happened to just dropping in a battery?!
They want you to bring it in to the dealer so they can make more $
I had mine done @Ford dealership and they didnt do all that....from what i observed the removed parts in front of battery and took the battery box apart at the front and only took them about 25 minutes just sayin!
Thanks, I will try a different approach next time.
Omfg. Seriously?
@@ronaldflorio6372 Couldnt believe it myself after watching the video!!
Yes, you take the air filter off. You remove the whole air filter housing, then one side of the battery box. Then remove negative cable, slide battery forward and do the positive cable, and battery comes out....pain in the ass for just a battery change out either way.
Finally someone that sounds realistic as far as time to do this. This I believe, but someone doing it for the first time, and may not have power tools etc. It will take longer. Also if you have to do this job in sub zero temperatures things will be harder. I honestly think time is not all that different either method you use.
This is the hard way to do it. It's much easier if you remove the air filter housing, and slide the battery forward.
I really need to try it. You are like the 10th person that tells me that. Since I have no need to remove it, only that one time I made that video.
I did all that and now my wipers run off and on, WTF!
hi, did the escape lose all computer settings or something like that after changing the battery?, i am a bit afraid to do it my self, you know some cars need to be reprogramed after this
Mine didn't.
A week after having my battery changed my car wouldn’t start. Was told it was the starter and proved it wasn’t. Car is currently setting at the dealership waiting to be reprogrammed. That’s what the dealership told my mechanic it needed over the phone. Will find out in the morning if it’s needing programmed or something else.
You dont need to remove wipers and plastic cover
I know. But at the time, this was my best option. Thanks.
Changing out a battery in this car is the biggest cluster fuck I have ever seen. It should be a very simple process but the Ford engineers in all of their wisdom, turned it into a big PITA.
Taking the filter box out is way faster!!!
Could this be the worse placement for a ford vehicle? Possible, probably, yes
I f’n hate this car, at least your video saved me hundreds of dollars. I was able to change the battery myself and Ford can shove it up their.....
Thank you for the video!!!
What a pain, just to get to the battery...
Appreciate Cha Man
i found it easier to remove air filter housing and remove battery through that space, instead of removing wiper arms and cowling. just my opinion.
Yes, you and another person suggested that. I wll give it a try, just for educational purposes. The method in the video is insane. Appreciate your comment.
AGREE 100%!
2017 Escape Titanium. Dealer told me its a BAGM battery and that they have to program it. Is this true?
Forget it, just searched and found out that the part number starts with BAGM, but its a AGM battery. My fault. But not sure about programming?
Thank you for showing me how to do this. However, ay my age and with my level of patience for mechanical things that were designed by Rube Goldberg, I believe this comes under the heading of Ford invented the damn thing, they can fix it.
And that was their exact goal when designing this engine bay. Make it as difficult as possible so they say screw it and pay us to do it.... I just replaced the passenger side low beam. Ready for a nap.
Next time, just remove the air filter housing and slide the battery out. No need to remove the wipers and all that up top afaik.
I will definitely try it out.
Thanks
I just did the air filter removal method as recommended by Ford. It is difficult on the 2.0 litre but got it done. If there is a ne t time I am using the wiper and cowl removal method.
Perte des données ordinateur et radio?
Non, merci d'avoir demandé.
wow
All this for a battery... Wish I would have known before purchasing the vehicle
Hello,
I know is very frustrating. However, this is something you will do (if you decide to do it yourself) once or twice to your Escape. After four years, the battery died, it was a good run. I replaced it few days ago, I did it using a different way (suggested by some viewers). The video will be up next Monday (01-09-2023). Is not easy, but is easier than the first method.
@JABA1965 After doing this, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It probably took me an hour tops. My point is 99% of cars have much easier access to the battery
Unbelievably long and complex procedure!
Yep. Done it twice so far.
Dude, remove the negative lead first. Please.
Thank you, I was wondering if anyone else noticed that!!!
That's not how Ford wants you to do it.
Ford became nightmare.
Almost like they’re trying to make it difficult to get to...
Damn
Wow what a brutal experience, as if you dont ever need the battery! Just hide it and have no access!! Fail ford!
This is fucking ridiculous just for a battery replacement, can’t believe the way they make cars now.
Are you serious…just why
This has got to be the most convoluted horse shit meant to force people to go to a dealership or mechanic just to change out a goddamn battery... I swear cars are built strategically to make it hell on a car owner just to pop a battery out and out a new one in... Why should a basic ware and tear issue like a battery change be this big of a bitch to change? Absolute horsefuckery!
Thanks for the crappy music. Yikes!
I know.
Thx for the video but this is another one of Ford's stupid ways on how to change a simple battery.
Poor motors company
what a mess
I found this very helpful, especially having the bolty sizes listed. For help with wiper alignment, check this video: ua-cam.com/video/t_56ZWGnwCM/v-deo.html.
