Thank you so much! A lot of videos out there are so many clickbait videos where you can tell people really don't know what they're talking about. I hope more people find quality content like this.
I'm not an audio person at all, and this was extremely helpful - especially the tip about changing the noise gate attenuation - it sounds so much more natural to leave it around 50%-60% rather than the 100 I was doing!
Hi Jordan. One thing a lot of people struggle with is frequencies and how getting them into balance gives you room for other sounds whether gaming or music mix. A great explanation in layman's talk. Well done. Most enjoyable. Greatings from Australia.
- me , buys some gear and wonders how to get it setup. Goes to youtube and you are always the person who has shown me how to set everything up on multiple devices so for this, i thank you!
I just bought the Shure SM7B and Rode PSA1+ due to one of your other videos!! Was looking for this and so glad you helped me with my GoXLR settings, absolute life saver. Loved the explanations too 💕
GoXLR inbound and I'm moving from the MV7 (purchased it literally 1 week ago) to the SM7B due to the richer, fuller sound. Great to get this information, it really eases my entry into the world of microphones and overall broadcast audio. I'm actually not a streamer at this point, but might be. Either way, I'm spending a lot of time on Discord, and I do various recordings on the side. Thanks! And I do hope your channel gets the growth that it deserves. Great stuff.
holy crap!i just did copy your EQ settings and my shure sm7b sound more fantastic!i record my voice and after i heared it i was blown away by the sound of my voice, thanks a lot now il try this while streaming COD..thanks again.
@@kettnercreative one more thing when my friends talk we can hear some strong echo after they talk,is it on my routing problem on my go xlr,can you help me on this?
I definitely appreciated the 'what not to do' demonstration of the noise gate at the beginning, where you put the wrong settings on so we could hear an example. Now if a friend has that problem I know what to listen for. I hope in future videos you do this more often, for example the compressor settings at the end when you mentioned what NOT to do. Definitely gonna try these settings and tinker with them til it's perfect.
Very precise and clear explanations every step of the way! I just got my SM7B and GoXLR. Watched other videos, but they seemed like generic recommendations for the settings. The attention to detail for this mic in particular was so great. Thanks so much!
Other people I watched just didn't explain the setting well enough. This made it so I understood everything and I can make personal adjustments and know what is actually happening. Thanks homie.
Thank you so much. I feel like these settings will be perfect for my streams on Twitch. I love how you have that idea in mind for us Gaming Content creators. This is my big fat thanks!!!! I just got my Mogami gold XLR cable for this specific mic. Im hoping to squeeze every penny out of this mic!!! Thanks again.

After all the hype surrounding the SM7B is dying with the launch of the Shure MV7, I think a video on the set up of a GoXLR with a Shure MV7 would be awesome! Yes, that is my current set up, but I think with your clear explanations you could kill that video!
excellent video, was setting stuff up for stream and took some recordings and noticed that cut in my audio a lot. the before and after recordings from this video were hugely different. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
I love your channel man. My fave for audio actually. Every audio issue or new piece of tech I get... I can find out exactly what I need to know right here! I just picked up one of these boxes as a (hoped) upgrade from focusrite but all the GoXLR is dead videos had me really nervous. All BS of course... just like all the idiots that said same about the sm7b. Keep up the great work! Thank you for sharing your great knowledge!
Such a great tutorial man, the why behind every setting is really helpful to know what the hell we are doing haha. Cheers! P.S. I applied this exact settings and definitely got an improvement on what I had before...
Anytime I get lost in my audio by taking advice from folks who don't know as much as you do, I come back to this video and reset my GoXLR. Hopefully I'll just stop taking that bad advice and leave things alone this time LOL!!
Great video definitely noticed a big difference in the quality of my shure feels like I’m actually using the full extent of the mic now especially at the price point Thank you! 👌
My only "meh" about the compressor settings you recommend is 60db of gain + 6db of make-up gain = 66db of total gain. Honestly at this level I can hear the white noise too much in my headphones, it's bothering while chatting without background music. While playing it's different yet it's still quite a noisy setting.
Here's something fun to do. After you get to the end of the video, go back to the very beginning to hear how the mic sounded before all of his settings and you'll really appreciate how great this setup sounds!
Maybe I missed it but it’s something no one ever seems to mention in the videos. What about the settings via the switches on the back of the mic itself? Where do we set those?
Few notes here, first off, excellent video!!!! Now on to the juicy stuff :-) I notice in the video you tend to speak from what appears to be about 10 inches from the 7b. The SM7b is designed to be used very close to the mouth, like 2-3 incehs at most. Having that mic at a farther distance and can cause users to need more gain to achieve the proper levels in their streaming software. This can cause users to have more background noise than they should have when using the mic. There seems to be this myth out there that using an SM7b means you simply don't have background noise, and it's just not true. (I'm not saying you are perpetuating that myth BTW. I mention it because it seems to be a REALLY common misconception and I take every opportunity to bust that myth that presents itself :-) That sort of rolls into my next comment. The meter in the GO XLR app is not great, as it's not an actual db meter and more of a general representation of mic levels. (I don't expect folks to know that, as it's not mentioned anywhere in the documentation. Rest assured I mod for the GO XLR Discord, the rest of the mod team and myself have been in talks with the TC Helicon devs about making that meter a more accurate representation of the actual level. In a perfect world, it would be a proper db meter, but IDK if they can swing that) Knowing that folks should be setting levels using the meters in the streaming software of their choice, as those levels represent what actually goes out to the stream. Next, when entering mic setup, the Mic fader drops to 70%, this is done because in the Mic Setup menu, all of the GO XLR in built VST functions are disabled, giving you a raw mic feed, and the devs didn't want the mic monitoring to blow people's ears off when adjusting gain. Knowing that, it's important to either tell folks to raise that fader back to 100% so that the levels they are judging, are actually the levels they will see vs it suddenly being louder when they close mic setup. I hope you don't take any of that as an attack, it's not mean to be by any means. My only intention is to educate and help folks with their GO XLRs anywhere I can. I see a lot of bad information out there, and I mean a LOT. I know that most of it is not intentional, and there are a variety of reasons why folks say what they do. We help so many folks in the GO XLR Discord with settings and troubelshooting, etc, it just sort of made sense to me to watch as many of these videos as I could, and try to help those folks as much as I could. This really turned into a wall, sorry about that. If you ever have questions, or want to chat about GO XLR stuff, please feel free to come on by the Discord server and ask away. I'm doinwork99 in there, and won't be hard to find :-) Again, really great video, you sound great, the production was excellent as well!!!!
Thanks for the comment. The Camera angle is a bit deceiving, the SM7B is typically always "a fist" from my mouth. Although it could be closer, I tend to leave it at this distance just because it's practical and comfortable while making tutorials.
man youre so wholesome normally i skip through videos but i watched every second of this one can you or someone in the comments tell me if the mini version does the same job? i dont need all these extra buttons on the right site tbh
Almost. The mini gets rid of all of the FX, but like you said - no big deal for 90% of people. The mini doesn't have motorized faders, led scribble strip, or a DeEsser as well. Out of all of those, to me, the deesser is probably the most important thing that's missing. We have a full video with the differences here: ua-cam.com/video/TCOl2tlPq58/v-deo.html
I have a Scarlett 2i2 and my Shure SM7b currently connected to it. I set the gain on the Scarlett to maybe 6 or 7 and in voicemeeter banana the fader gain to -1.0 Do you think a Mini GoXLR would be good or even better, or is the Scarlett in combination with the voicemeeter enough? Before using the voicemeeter (and gain) my friend said I'm really quite. Even when I turned up the gain on the scarlet to 10. I remember from your last video that you should avoid, if possible, to set the gain on the scarlett itself to 10. Great video, you are very clear and precise in showing and explaining things, I really like that.
