  • The SM7B and GoXLR combo is a pretty common setup on twitch and the live streaming space in general..
    Both are fantastic pieces of equipment for streaming and aren't stupidly expensive compared to some more professional or high end setups..
    In this video i'll be showing you how to Setup the Shure SM7B & the GoXLR for live streaming including the best Microphone settings.

    Thank you so much for all your knowledge with XLR. Most people just go through the settings and for someone like me who has no clue how audio works. You're explanations were clear and concise and helped me understand how to set it up. Thank you!

      I always got annoyed when people are like "heres MY settinga and This is exactly what you need to do"
      When in reality everyone voice n room is different.
      so I like to Include a bit of education so people can tweak settings if they arent 100% happy with what I do..
      Glad you enjoyed the video though and it was helpful 🔥

    Got to support a fellow English Northman! I remember following you on tiktok sometime around 2020/2021 im sure and its staggering that you haven't received the attention that your production quality and effort absolutely deserves. There's a few people on the internet that you just trust when ever they say something, MKBHD, Harris and Heller etc. and for me you're absolutely in this bracket. Keep up the great work mate!

    Helped me out a ton here. I have the same setup and was boosting too much for the initial gain, bringing it back with makeup was game-changing for me.

    • @ajsarsfield
      @ajsarsfield  Рік тому +1

      EXACTLY! That was my initial issue too!
      You'd think the compressor would help but for some reason even with that on, if your gain is a bit too high to start with it just ends up sounding bad...
      I'm so glad you found it useful!

    Thank you, your video was really informative and helpful. I actually put all my settings the same as the ones you use (I figured why not give it a go lol), and I'm looking forward to testing it. I am actually in radio and often do my show from home, so I am already set up for that. My son and I are getting back into streaming together (from separate locations) after a long hiatus. This time, I want to use my work setup (Shure SM7b/ GoXLR) for our streams (it's agony for me to listen to our audio when I have to use my gaming headset mic). I am actually looking for more specific help with adding my game console audio to the mix. My son's computer is the host for the stream, so I don't use OBS on my end, which changes my specific help needs. Do you have any content that might help?

    • @ajsarsfield
      @ajsarsfield  6 місяців тому +2

      I don't specifically have any content about that.. (yet) BUT
      if you're using the GoXLR to capture audio (depends on the console you're playing) but you could connect the console to the GoXLR as an input either via optical in or Line in etc.
      That way you should be able to still hear the game through your headphone monitoring + because the GoXLR has a "broadcast" mix.. you should be able to send your microphone + game sound out to your son at the same time .
      it just gets a bit more difficult if you want to send them to a different location as 2 separate audio streams, but I'm sure someone on UA-cam would have a solution for that lol

      There's loads of different options these days BUT

At the moment I’m using a rodecaster pro with the elgato capture card but it’s a bit hard to get it to work on dual pc setup more with the audio. I can’t hear my gameplay from my pc . I use a steelseries nova pro which has 2 usb , 1 connected on each of but it can only change to one usb so I have it on the streaming pc but it is confusing and doesn’t pick the audio up and have it recorded or in the stream as well

    • @ajsarsfield
      @ajsarsfield  3 місяці тому

      Pretty much everything should be the same BUT the EQ might be slightly different...
      For a higher pitched or Female voice then the bass frequencies need adjusting, as well as maybe the high end not being pushed up as much
      It'd take some trial/error on your specific voice
      BUT
      Id go for something like
      100hz - -5db (removes Hums and rumbles lower than your voice)
      250hz - +2db (slightly boosts the bass in your voice)
      500hz - -3db ( cuts out "boxy" noises sounds flat if left in)
      2000hz - 0db
      3500hz - +1 (Clarity helps cut through BG music/game etc)
      8000hz - -3db (avoids Harsh S and T sounds "Siblance")
      12000hz - +3db (Airy sounds)
      18000hz- +1db ( also Air its almost high enough we cant hear it BUT these frequencies can add a nice "Sparkle" to voices)
      Obviously this is all generalisations and SHOULD be tweaked for YOUR voice..

      The meter isn't actually in the GOXLR.
      (Probably should have explained that in the video)
      But I was using OBS studio Audio meters to measure/demonstrate the audio levels in this video..
      I just overlaid them on top in editing..
      Any audio recording software should have meters like that though..
      Obs studio
      Audacity

    This kind of stuff is super hard for me for a few different reasons. I chose to invest in a RE20, and there aren't many videos covering those that are like this. I have a GOXLR mini, so i don't have as many options, and i just don't understand how to really discover my ideal settings for my voice. I think you did a great job describing everything, but i don't know what to switch and how high/low i should make specific settings to match my voice. It doesn't really help i don't have much sound proofing either, so everything sounds pretty bad to begin with.
    TLDR it's a struggle

    • @ajsarsfield
      @ajsarsfield  Рік тому +1

      As far as i know the RE20 (great mic) has less of a proximity effect.. ( less bass emphasis) SO you probably don't have to remove bass or add much Top end to the EQ as i have done to the SM7B..
      I think i replied to someone else here for the "mini" settings I'd use for the SM7b
      So for the RE20 I'd probably go for something like this;
      (RE20 switch Flat)
      65hz +2 ( sub bass)
      125hz +4 (Bass)
      0.5hz 0 (Mids)
      1Khz 0
      4Khz +2 (Treble)
      8Khz +4
      This is kinda guess work as i don't have an RE20 to test
      but i know it has less bass and more Treble than the SM7b as well as a built in "mid" cut so.
      these settings should be a decent baseline that you can hopefully tweak to fit YOUR voice.

    • @ajsarsfield
      @ajsarsfield  Рік тому +1

      obviously audio is kinda subkective.. and what i like might be different towhat YOU like...
      BUT
      The best way to see what Frequencies do, is to put ALL the EQ to 0 and then listen as you Raise each band individually,
      so you can hear what its doing to your voice... Then you can kinda figure out whether to add or take away those sounds from YOUR voice. ( by how much specifically might be a bit of trial n error)

      'Cause that comes with elgatos wavelink software..
      And that means you can use the GoXLR as JUST a XLR microphone interface..

      Without a cloudlifter etc then you'd set it to dynamic as those types of mics don't need Phantom power

      GoXLR has pretty good Preamps to start with.. So even at like 55/60db it sounds pretty clean!
      I have a mic booster like you and I only have to have my GoXLR set to around 30/35
      Its not 100% necessary but you'll get the best audio quality with one

      If you were using a Ribbon mic you might have issues (those are very sensitive) but dynamic mics are VERY robust and with a Cloudlifter its supposed to be on anyway

I cant figure out why it sounds so bad i was wondering if youd be willing to hop in a dicscord call with me or something to help me out further, id even be willing to pay you like $50 or whatever for your time. Aren't you supposed to hear yourself in your mic? 🤭
      Or do you mean hear yourself in your headphones when talking?
      If so,
      there's a "mic monitor" setting on the GoXLR... (I think at the very end of the mixer tab)
      Might have to click an arrow next to "headphones"
      Just turn that down and you won't be able to hear yourself when you talk any more..
      Or go into routing and remove "microphone" from your headset output..
      whichever way works better for you..

      Question 1
      How close is your microphone to your mouth..?
      If its an SM7B is needs to be less than 6" away...
      And 2
      did you copy my noise gate settings exactly?
      Because they need to be adjusted for you and your voice.
      (Everyone speaks at different volumes and room has different background noise )
      if its not picking up your voice then its most likely the gate causing that issue..

    GOXLR is dead. They are stopping support!

    • @ajsarsfield
      @ajsarsfield  7 місяців тому +2

      Well.. Not really
      Yes the team disbanded but there's a community project which is working on updating and improving the software,
      so it's not completely "dead" yet..
      (on github I think)
      Besides, I doubt Windows updates will kill the connectivity for a while yet.
      So, yes upgrading and moving away from it might be a good idea long term
      but if you already own one then no rush, you'll be good for a while yet..

      What other alternative can we use?

    • @ajsarsfield
      @ajsarsfield  7 місяців тому

      It depends...
      Elgato Wave XLR and a streamdeck+ does most of what a goxlr can do...
      (and more in some cases)
      But If you want a good setup for dual Pc's then the Rodecaster Duo is probably a better choice for that..
      Issue is, they are both more expensive than the goxlr mini so might be out of people's budgets 🙃
